WASHINGTON — Authorities reported that Secret Service agents shot an armed man near the White House early Sunday morning following a confrontation. The man was believed to have traveled from Indiana.
The Secret Service stated that the shooting occurred around midnight, about a block from the White House, and no one else was hurt. President Trump was in Florida at the time.
According to the Secret Service, they received information from local police regarding a potentially suicidal individual traveling from Indiana. They located the man’s vehicle and a person matching his description nearby.
The Secret Service stated that “As officers approached, the individual displayed a firearm, leading to an armed confrontation where our personnel fired shots.”
The man was taken to a hospital. The Secret Service reported that his condition was “unknown.”
The Metropolitan Police Department will conduct an investigation into the shooting, as it involved law enforcement officers. A request for comment from the police department on Sunday was not immediately answered.
