(SeaPRwire) –   The film industry continues to lean into prequels and spinoffs, and the latest project from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth follows this trend by expanding on “The Shadow of the Past.” This specific chapter from The Fellowship of the Ring provides background on the discovery of the One Ring and its corrupting effect on Smeagol, the Hobbit who became Gollum. While originally serving as a brief explanation for how the Ring reached Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, this backstory serves as the foundation for the upcoming film, The Hunt for Gollum.

Andy Serkis, the longtime voice and motion-capture actor for Gollum, returns to direct and star in this “midquel,” which takes place between the events of The Hobbit and the original trilogy. While many details are still being kept secret, Warner Bros. confirmed several cast members at Cinemacon. Fans can expect the return of Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Other casting news includes the return of Lee Pace from The Hobbit films and the addition of Jamie Dornan (rather than Leo Woodall) as a younger version of Aragorn.

Additionally, Kate Winslet has been cast in a mysterious role named Marigol. Though the character is not from the original books, the name itself may offer clues about the film’s narrative direction.

In the Tolkien legendarium, “Marigold” is a frequent name for Hobbits, such as Samwise Gamgee’s sister or a character in The Rings of Power. Winslet’s character is specifically named Marigol, and while that exact name does not appear in Tolkien’s writing, it does not necessarily mean she is a brand-new invention.

Before the official announcement, rumors suggested Winslet might play either Aragorn’s mother, Gilraen the Fair, or Gollum’s grandmother. Since the studio has clarified the casting for other roles, the theory that she will play Smeagol’s grandmother remains a strong possibility.

Gollum mentions his grandmother in The Fellowship of the Ring, though she is never named. Because Smeagol was a Hobbit-like creature before his transformation, a Hobbit-style name like Marigol would be appropriate. In the lore, she is described as a powerful matriarch and a keeper of Elven Rings, which are less corrupting than the One Ring.

Gandalf’s search for Gollum will be interspersed with some Hobbit-centric backstory. | New Line Cinema

The Hunt for Gollum is expected to flesh out Smeagol’s life before he lost the Ring, drawing from “The Shadow of the Past” and The Hobbit. Winslet’s role may be secondary to the main plot, which focuses on Gandalf and Aragorn (known then as Strider) attempting to find Gollum before Sauron’s forces can capture him.

The movie will likely use a non-linear narrative to explore Smeagol’s history. Because the Warner Bros. films exist in a different cinematic universe than the Amazon series, this project may offer a fresh interpretation of the history involving Elven Rings. While much remains to be seen, Winslet’s casting provides a clearer idea of what the story will entail.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on December 17, 2027.
