(SeaPRwire) – The fifth season of *The Boys* is pulling out all the stops to set up a grand finale, which involves a number of significant crossovers. The college-set spinoff *Gen V* concluded its second season with a major scene where Starlight enlisted the young adult Supes to help her permanently dismantle Vought. However, it appears these characters will not have a substantial part to play in the current season.
Indeed, the first character from *The Boys* universe to reappear does so in Season 5, Episode 3. Yet, rather than featuring Marie Moreau, Jordan Li, or another key figure from that series, the cameo belongs to a next-generation hero who was largely a recurring gag in *Gen V*: Maverick. Regrettably, his function in the story seems limited to forcing another character to confront his history—a discouraging signal for potential future crossovers.
Warning! Spoilers for *The Boys* Season 5 Episode 3 ahead!

The third episode of *The Boys*’ final season leads the group to the intricate underground bunker of former Vought CEO Stan Edgar, a prominent figure in *Gen V* Season 2. But no familiar faces from God U are present—just the complete absence of one. Maverick, the invisible son of Translucent, resides there because Stan Edgar “believes that children are the future.”
What narrative purpose does he serve? Fundamentally, he exists to make Hughie remember Translucent, whom he killed as far back as the series’ second episode. At that time, Hughie held a blanket resentment against all Supes, but now he must accept that not all of them are evil. In fact, he is currently battling to secure V1 to protect the Supes he cares about.
Hughie is consumed by guilt upon realizing Maverick is present, though this feeling is slightly eased when he discovers Maverick blames Homelander for his father’s death. Hughie attempts to connect with him over this shared belief, but by the episode’s end, Maverick learns the truth and confronts Hughie. This confrontation is cut short when the telekinetic Supe Cindy kills Maverick.

So, what was the reason for Maverick’s inclusion? He is our only link to *Gen V* thus far, yet he seems to have been included solely to offer perspective and resolution for Hughie before being abruptly killed off. Leaving the rest of the *Gen V* cast on the sidelines is disappointing enough: Season 2 demonstrated Marie Moreau’s ability to resurrect people from fatal wounds, a power that would have been very useful when Homelander broke A-Train’s neck. But using a minor *Gen V* character merely for emotional impact—and then promptly dispatching them—feels like adding insult to injury.
This sets a worrying precedent for what’s to come. We are nearly halfway through the final season, and there is still no indication of Marie Moreau, who is arguably one of the most powerful living Supes. We can only hope that when she finally appears, she will receive better handling. At the very least, she will be visible, even if only briefly.
The Boys Season 5 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
