Seltzer Water: Health Benefits and Potential Downsides

Seltzer is considered one of the healthier drink options. Research indicates that sparkling water, or seltzer, provides the same level of hydration as still water and is absorbed by the body in the same manner. Seltzer is essentially water with added carbon dioxide for fizz. Dr. David Poppers, a professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, notes that seltzer is generally beneficial for hydration, as many people don't drink enough water. He emphasizes its hydrating qualities without the calories found in other beverages. While seltzer is a good choice for hydration for most, some should be aware of potential drawbacks before making it a staple. It may irritate your bladder While most people won't experience this, those with interstitial cystitis or an overactive bladder might find that the carbonation in seltzer aggravates their condition, leading to increased urgency or discomfort, according to Dr. Dana Cohen, an integrative medicine physician and co-author of "Quench." If you notice urinary symptoms after drinking seltzer, it may be a sign that it's irritating your bladder. It could improve your digestion Poppers suggests that seltzer can aid in promoting regular bowel movements and relieving constipation, emphasizing its importance for gut health, similar to regular water. Studies suggest carbonated water may benefit those with chronic indigestion, and a study in Japan showed it can increase feelings of fullness more effectively than regular water. Seltzer might give you gas or heartburn Cohen notes that the bubbles in seltzer can increase abdominal pressure, potentially triggering or worsening symptoms like acid reflux, bloating, or gas in susceptible individuals. These bubbles can lead to burping or flatulence. Furthermore, the carbonation may relax the lower esophageal sphincter, making heartburn more likely as stomach acid travels upwards, especially if consumed quickly. Cohen recommends drinking seltzer with food to minimize reflux. It could take a toll on your teeth Regular seltzer consumption may harm teeth due to its slight acidity, although less so than soda. Lilya Horowitz, a dentist in Brooklyn, explains that prolonged exposure to the low pH can erode enamel, increasing the risk of cavities and fractures. She advises limiting seltzer consumption to 15-20 minute intervals and alternating with less acidic beverages like herbal tea or plain water. Drinking seltzer through a straw can further protect teeth, although Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietitian nutritionist, points out that it may also increase gassiness and wrinkles around the mouth. Rinsing with plain water after drinking seltzer can also help. Tap water in many U.S. areas contains fluoride, which benefits teeth. Relying solely on canned or bottled seltzer might mean missing out on this benefit, unless you use tap water with a home carbonation machine. The good news for your bones Contrary to past beliefs, seltzer does not negatively impact bone health. This concern was related to colas, which studies show can interfere with calcium absorption. The bottom line on bubbly water Registered dietitian Eric Williamson from Canyon Ranch Tucson advises moderation, suggesting one to three cans of plain seltzer daily is safe for most, especially for hydration. He cautions against added ingredients and advises considering individual digestive comfort and overall diet. Cohen suggests avoiding carbonated waters with added sugars or artificial sweeteners, as these can irritate the digestive tract, bladder, or teeth in sensitive individuals. Carbonated waters containing "natural flavors" from fruits, vegetables, herbs, or spices are generally safe. Checking the label is crucial to know the exact contents. ```

Virtual Abortion Care: A Useful Tool, But Not a Complete Solution

A new report from the Guttmacher Institute indicates a growing reliance on virtual abortion care. While this might seem positive given the restrictions following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, it's crucial to interpret this trend cautiously. Telehealth is undoubtedly valuable. My organization pioneered telemedicine abortion services in 2009. Since the FDA relaxed regulations on abortion pills, we've expanded our virtual care to ten states. However, virtual care alone isn't a comprehensive solution or a substitute for genuinely accessible care. Optimal abortion care requires a comprehensive approach, offering choices. True access means providing individuals with options, whether at a clinic or remotely. Both are necessary. Clinics are essential for abortions after 12 weeks, meaning a sole focus on pills and telemedicine neglects those with later-term pregnancies or those needing more extensive pain management. The rise in online abortion services highlights the vital role virtual providers play amidst increasing bans and diminished access. Telehealth can reduce barriers by shortening travel, lowering costs, and mitigating stigma. However, this is only part of the picture. Guttmacher's data reveals that most abortions still occur in physical clinics. Despite the optimism surrounding telemedicine, in-person care remains the norm. Furthermore, virtual care isn't always accessible, particularly for those in states with bans, who must still travel out of state. Accessing virtual abortion care also requires a device, internet, payment method, and a secure environment. These requirements can be as challenging as reaching a clinic for those facing domestic violence, housing insecurity, or financial hardship. Our clinicians, both in-person and virtual, assist patients navigating an increasingly complex and expensive system. Black and Latina women, young people, and hourly workers are disproportionately affected. Our data reveals a preference for in-person care among patients of color, while virtual care is more common among white and Asian patients, highlighting that telemedicine isn't universally accessible. Fewer individuals can afford out-of-state abortion care, leading to delays or complete denial of care. Recent reports, including Guttmacher's data, haven't adequately addressed the impact of funding. For example, after the Dobbs decision, The Abortion Access Fund (TAF), managed by Resources for Abortion Delivery (RAD), covered the full cost of abortion care for those traveling from states with bans to states like Illinois, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, and New Mexico. This support was transformative, providing free procedures and allowing local abortion funds to focus on travel, lodging, and other practical needs. However, funding has decreased, following cuts from the National Abortion Federation Justice Fund. These cuts have had immediate consequences, straining existing abortion funds and limiting the number of patients who can travel or receive comprehensive care. Affordability now often determines whether someone can access abortion, regardless of location or method. The economic impact of this funding loss cannot be ignored. People should be able to use insurance or Medicaid for abortion care, rather than relying solely on donations or grants. Donations shouldn't cover costs that insurance could easily handle. We navigate complex regulations to accept insurance and Medicaid in several states, but reimbursement systems are inconsistent, and many individuals live where public or private coverage is unavailable for abortion care. As independent abortion providers, we are committed to helping our patients. Dedicated staff assist patients in accessing available funding, coordinating between $5,000 and $10,000 in financial support daily. However, with funding cuts and strained local resources, it's never enough. Discussions about telemedicine as "the" solution often overlook these financial realities and the practical support needed. Even if the procedure is fully funded, patients may still lack the resources for travel, lodging, or childcare. These are the underfunded areas that require urgent attention. To ensure genuine abortion access, we must prioritize economic justice, invest in patient support infrastructure, and focus on those most impacted by restrictions. This means investing in both in-clinic and virtual care, as well as Medicaid and mutual aid. Anything less risks perpetuating existing inequalities. ```

Netflix’s “Turning Point: The Vietnam War” Reveals Its Most Disturbing Moments

The war technically concluded when North Vietnamese forces seized Saigon in South Vietnam, which was supported by the U.S., on April 30, 1975. However, the end of the war didn't feel real for many Americans and Vietnamese. The U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam led to . Turning Point: The Vietnam War, a docuseries, explores the human impact of what was then America’s longest war (1955-1975) through interviews with U.S. veterans, Vietnamese survivors, recordings of U.S. presidents analyzing the situation, and previously unreleased CBS News footage. Approximately 58,220 Americans and over a million Vietnamese people died during the conflict. U.S. presidents repeatedly stated that their goal was to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam, claiming that such an event would eliminate any hope for democracy in Asia. However, as the war progressed, the path to victory became increasingly unclear. “There wasn’t a clear enemy,” director Brian Knappenberger told TIME. “Were they there to stop communism? Were they there to win the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese people? A lot of the veterans that we talk to say they often felt like they were just trying to survive.” Across five episodes, Turning Point delves into some of the most horrific episodes of the Vietnam War and examines their lasting impact. Drug use among U.S. soldiers In Turning Point, veterans share accounts about drug use during their service in Vietnam. Marijuana was readily available. Soldiers could also obtain opium in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The series features CBS News footage of Ed Rabel reporting on a congressional investigation that discovered 10-15% of U.S. troops were using heroin.  “A lot of veterans we interviewed turned to heavy drug use to sort of deal with the day-to-day life of war and what they were seeing,” says Knappenberger. “They came home with those addictions, which lasted many years after the war and some almost never got over it. It destroyed a lot of people’s lives and the lives of their families.” “I started to smoke marijuana every day all day to mask, hide the pain and the fear,” Dennis Clark Brazil, U.S. Army veteran, says in the doc. Eldson J. McGhee, another U.S. Army veteran, says that when doctors stopped giving him morphine for an injury, he became addicted to heroin. “It completely ruined my life.” Following the Vietnam War, drug testing became more common in the military. U.S. soldiers killed their bosses on purpose In a practice known as fragging, some soldiers intentionally killed their superior officers. Fragging is a term for the M67 fragmentation hand grenade, which releases small metal fragments in all directions. In the series, CBS News correspondent Jed Duvall is shown holding the M67 fragmentation hand grenade during a TV news segment. During the war, there were approximately 90 instances of "fragging" in the U.S. Marine Corps and between 600 and 800 instances in the U.S. Army, carried out by soldiers as a form of revenge. U.S. Marine veteran Mike Nakayama says in the series that a pot of money  was collected and given to whoever killed an officer.  While Nakayama was in Vietnam, an explosive was placed under a sergeant's tent, killing him, and three soldiers split the money.  “You can kind of call it justice,” Nakayama said.  The torture of South Vietnamese people After Saigon fell, the new communist government sent hundreds of thousands of former Vietnamese soldiers and others who had assisted the American cause to re-education camps.  At these prison-like facilities, detainees were separated from their families and subjected to starvation, beatings, and disease. Chung Tu Buu, a detainee and former prisoner of war for about 14 years, says in Turning Point that the goal of the re-education camp was to "brainwash and force us to do hard labor work." The filmmakers interviewed some men who were in the re-education camps, as well as a woman who lost her husband in a camp. South Vietnamese journalist Vu Thanh Thuy said her husband was sent to a re-education camp, leaving her to care for their two-month-old baby alone. "I thought about committing suicide during those days," she says in the series. Her husband escaped from the camp and was hidden in a church by a priest, part of an underground movement of South Vietnamese people. They reunited and fled the country in 1979. “The re-education camps…with harsh conditions, I do not hesitate to say this was one serious mistake that we made,” Ton Nu Thi Ninh, former Vice Chair of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, says in the series. The tragic Operation Babylift plane crash This year also marks fifty years since a tragedy: Operation Babylift, a humanitarian mission to evacuate Vietnamese orphans to the United States, suffered a devastating setback when a cargo plane carrying hundreds of infants and toddlers crashed shortly after takeoff on April 4, 1975, ranking among the worst civilian air disasters in history. Approximately 50 adults and 78 infants perished, along with 35 American military personnel. Turning Point includes recollections of the crash from Jennifer Kruse, an Operation Babylift survivor, South Vietnamese orphan who was adopted by American parents. Kruse said that growing up, she was always told that she was put on that plane because her mother wanted her to have a better life. During the war, it was common for U.S. soldiers to impregnate Vietnamese women, and some of those children were on the plane, in the hopes that they would face less discrimination in the U.S. Kruse recalls seeing smoke while floating on some kind of debris. Her last memory of Vietnam is “floating on that debris, looking out…I kind of just blacked out. I have no memory of my rescue. My next memory would be in America.” ```

Meet the Real-Life Chef Behind the Delicious Drama “Carême”

Apple TV+'s new historical drama tells the story of Antonin Carême, considered the first celebrity chef. Carême is set in France following the French Revolution. The chef, portrayed by Benjamin Voisin, is employed by French Foreign Minister Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord (Jérémie Renier) to create impressive pastries for diplomatic negotiations. Here's what you should know about the real-life chef who inspired Carême. Antonin Carême's Legacy Ian Kelly, the creator of Carême and author of the book on which it's based, Carême: the First Celebrity Chef, explains that Carême was the first chef to gain wealth and fame through publishing cookbooks. Kelly highlights Carême's second cookbook, where he famously wrote, "you could try this yourself at home." Carême is also credited with popularizing the chef's hat, sporting a tall, starched white hat that distinguished him from his cooks. In an early example of brand promotion, he even directed readers to a shop where they could purchase their own. However, many of his renowned recipes are quite complex. Carême's classic French dishes include vol-au-vent, a puff pastry filled with savory ingredients, and tournedos Rossini, a steak topped with foie gras. He famously declared, "My soul is utterly French, and I cannot live except in France." In France, food has historically been used as a diplomatic tool, showcasing the country's finest offerings. Kelly describes Carême as a "passionate artist who wants to have food and being a chef taken seriously as an art form." An example from the show involves Carême presenting a large triangular structure covered in thin paper. When he sets the paper on fire, it reveals a triangular tray of pastries for a British ambassador with a sweet tooth. This scene embodies Carême's belief: "I believe architecture to be the first amongst the arts, and the principal branch of architecture is confectionery." The turn of the 19th century, the period depicted in the show, significantly impacted French cuisine. According to Kelly, the French turned to food as a way to cope with the trauma following the revolution. He notes that restaurants were nonexistent in Paris before the revolution, and gastronomy emerged from this era. The Enigma of Carême The show offers plenty of intrigue beyond culinary matters. In the series, Carême's sexual appetite rivals his passion for food. He engages in numerous affairs, including one with Napoleon's wife, Josephine. While their affair is a fictional element, it draws inspiration from history. Kelly confirms that Josephine's inability to have children and her desire to prevent Napoleon from divorcing her are historically accurate. Carême becomes entangled in this situation when he begins cooking for Marie-Louise Habsburg, the woman brought in to marry Napoleon and provide him with an heir. Regarding the extent to which his portrayal of a high sex drive is based on reality, Kelly states, "We don’t know much, but what we know points very definitively in that direction.” Kelly emphasizes that there was considerable scope for creative interpretation due to the limited information available about Carême. While the chef often claimed medicinal properties for his food, especially his soups, the scene where he uses bitter herbs to cure Napoleon's illness is fictional. Accounts of his childhood are also difficult to confirm. Carême claimed that his family abandoned him at the age of nine, and he was subsequently taken in by a baker. "He was a myth-maker," says Kelly. A Critical Voice Kelly's book is filled with insights from the chef. Carême considered documentation to be a chef's most important legacy, writing in 1830, "Our only duty, after cooking, is to record and publish. If not, we will suffer such regrets." He strongly believed that dinner parties should last at least two hours, preferably three or more. He also expressed strong opinions about those with no appreciation for food, writing that "The rich man who is miserly only eats to live, lives his life in mediocrity, and dies in it too" and "a rich man who does not appreciate a good cook will never know ineffable joy.” He reserved even harsher words for those who arrive late to restaurant reservations: "The guest whose tardiness delays the meal should have the dining-room door slammed in his face."

Trump’s Low Poll Numbers May Not Tell the Whole Story

This article is part of The D.C. Brief, TIME’s politics newsletter. Sign up to get stories like this sent to your inbox. President Donald Trump's poll numbers are declining, and his approval rating isn't much better. However, this doesn't necessarily indicate the complete picture. The negative headlines are hard to ignore, even for those trying to avoid or deny his second term. Trump's actions against government employees have resulted in job losses and reduced the federal workforce to levels seen in the 1960s. CNN reports that at least 120,000 federal positions have been cut or are slated for reduction. Trump's focus on budget cuts, despite overall spending increases, has significantly decreased contracts with external companies and vendors, often without a clear substitute for their services. The constant chaos is evident in daily outrages and a continuous flow of information.  The U.S. economy is declining even faster than patience with the White House, due to trade war concerns driven by increasing and seemingly illogical tariffs. On Wednesday, as markets fell again and the Commerce Department announced the U.S. economy actually shrank in the first quarter, Trump blamed his predecessor. He posted on social media, "This is Biden's Stock Market, not Trump's." (Despite claiming in January of the previous year that Biden didn't deserve credit for a rising market, arguing investors were profiting from the expectation of Trump's return.) He reiterated this during a Cabinet meeting to mark his first 100 days in office. "That’s Biden. That’s not Trump. … We came in and I was very against everything that Biden was doing,” Trump said at the start of the meeting. He then conceded that the prices of many goods might soon increase. “Maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more,” he said. This illustrates three difficult truths: Trump realizes the economy isn't performing as he had hoped, the worst may be yet to come, and voters are increasingly seeking someone to hold accountable. Recent polls show Trump's approval rating at around a third of Americans. This is a slight decrease from his first term, when a dedicated MAGA base remained steadfast. However, this time Trump's base might be less reliable, particularly if the economy continues to decline and he is blamed. Trump returned to Washington promising cheaper groceries, lower inflation, and significant job growth. However, fulfilling these promises has proven more challenging than winning more electoral votes than Kamala Harris. His inconsistent performance has caused market instability, and his disregard for tradition continues to unsettle Washington insiders and Wall Street investors. The impact has so far been around 16 points in Trump’s polling, leaving him with a double-digit deficit, but the full impact is still unfolding. The warning signs are apparent. Economists are increasingly worried about a potential recession if Trump's tariffs remain in place. The supply of inexpensive goods from China is expected to dry up as early as next month, potentially leading to shelves that resemble those seen during the early stages of the pandemic. Businesses are slowing down expansions and investments, and families are postponing major purchases. Trump is doing little to ease these concerns. After a brief pause, he has resumed criticizing the Federal Reserve over interest rates, unsettling a market that values stability. The Republican-led House and Senate are struggling to advance their legislative agenda as the White House's priorities and boundaries shift erratically. Confused business leaders are finding it difficult to understand the situation in D.C.; General Motors’ chief financial officer told reporters this week that forecasts were simply “a guess amidst what the Administration might do.” The magnitude of Trump's challenges is matched only by their potential consequences. Americans share a negative view of the economy; according to a CNN poll , 59% believe Trump's policies have worsened economic conditions. The same survey reveals that 69% of the public expects a recession within the next two years, and 72% believe the tariffs will negatively impact the U.S. economy. In short, Americans don't accept Trump's economic outlook and are likely to blame him for any problems. Make sense of what matters in Washington. .

Trump’s Climate Policies Isolated as Canada and Mexico Prioritize Climate Action

` tags. ```xml Mark Carney secured a full term as Canada’s prime minister on Monday, campaigning largely on countering policies from U.S. President Donald Trump. While climate change wasn't a central campaign theme beyond Carney’s adjustment of his predecessor's carbon tax, his established reputation as a leading voice on climate and finance positions him as a climate-conscious leader that the environmental movement can support. Carney’s emergence as a climate-focused prime minister, despite not emphasizing climate during his campaign, gains significance when compared to Claudia Sheinbaum’s election in Mexico last year. Sheinbaum, a climate scientist, also avoided the topic during her campaign, choosing to focus on continuing her predecessor's social programs. (The previous president seldom addressed climate issues.) Consequently, the U.S., under Trump's rollback of climate policies, finds itself as the regional outlier, caught between two countries with climate-minded leaders. This has implications for the traditional alliance between the three nations. Furthermore, the successes of both Carney and Sheinbaum present an opportunity for reflection. For the past 15 years, U.S. advocates have pushed for climate to be a more prominent political issue, believing it would lead to more climate-focused elected officials and, subsequently, better climate policy. However, as seen with the Biden administration, the results have been mixed, with significant climate policies enacted but their long-term sustainability remaining uncertain. Carney and Sheinbaum offer a chance to evaluate a different approach. Few climate change experts would have chosen a strategy of actively avoiding discussing the climate crisis. However, if these two leaders can strategically implement climate policy while the public's attention remains on trade, geopolitics, and economic issues, they could establish a new model for climate leadership. Anyone familiar with the intersection of climate and economics is likely acquainted with Carney. A former Goldman Sachs investment banker, he led Canada’s central bank starting in 2008 and later the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. After his tenure in monetary policy, he prioritized climate action, becoming Vice Chairman at Brookfield Asset Management in Toronto, where he oversaw the firm’s ESG portfolio and impact investing, launching funds to finance clean energy investments in developing countries. Additionally, from 2021, he chaired the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, aiding financial institutions in advancing the energy transition. Over the past five years, Carney’s name has been consistently mentioned in discussions about climate finance. As the Canadian election progressed, I revisited my notes from a 2022 conversation with Carney. We discussed various topics, including nuclear energy's role and the disparity between climate goals and policies, with a particular emphasis on the role of financial institutions in driving the transition. However, a simple, almost cliché statement stood out: "We need to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time." While we were discussing the Russia-Ukraine conflict and its impact on fossil fuel producers, the sentiment is equally applicable today. To an activist focused on large-scale systemic change, Carney's proposals, detailed in the "Build" section of his campaign website, might seem less inspiring than ambitious ideas like a Green New Deal or a carbon tax. However, his proposals, including tax incentives, transition bonds, and a carbon border adjustment mechanism, are designed to achieve progress. "Different parties, different individuals have different views on whether you use pricing or regulation or subsidies," he told me in 2022. "Spoiler alert: It is always some combination of the three." These measures might be subtle enough to avoid opposition while still providing companies with the necessary support to continue investing in the energy transition. In Mexico, Sheinbaum, who contributed to significant U.N. climate science reports before entering politics, is expected to moderate her predecessor’s climate approach. She has pledged to increase renewable energy and cap oil production, but these promises have been secondary to her focus on Trump’s trade policies. Does it matter that the U.S. is at odds with its neighbors, positioned between a climate scientist to the South and a climate economist to the North? The immediate impact might be limited, but the long-term significance should not be underestimated. Trump’s policies necessitate a near-complete revision of international norms. For many countries, these new norms will include climate action. Carney’s campaign site mentions a border tax. Furthermore, both Canada and Mexico possess significant mineral supply chains crucial for the energy transition. While both leaders have expressed interest in collaborating with the U.S., they might also opt to partner with more dependable nations. "Critical minerals in particular are a potentially useful tool," Canada’s energy and natural resources minister Jonathan Wilkinson noted in March, suggesting the possibility of partnering with other countries to develop these resources, potentially excluding the U.S. However, "we’re not there yet." It is easy to foresee such a scenario developing soon. This story is supported by a partnership with and Journalism Funding Partners. TIME is solely responsible for the content. ```

Non-local buyers at the six fairs came primarily from Mainland China, Taiwan and Malaysia, highlighting Hong Kong’s influence as an international trade platform.Sophia Chong, HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, said: “The seven major events held by the HKTDC in late April brought together some 6,000 exhibitors from over 30 countries and regions. Despite the current challenges in the global economic and trade environment, we actively attracted buyers to our fairs to enhance trade resilience and assist exhibitors in gaining a foothold in new markets such as the Middle East and ASEAN regions. The HKTDC remains committed to promoting cross-sector and international trade cooperation among exhibitors, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as an international trade hub and showcasing its unique advantage in building connections regionally and globally.”Nearly half of respondents forecast sales growthTo gain deeper insights into current trends in the lifestyle products industry, the HKTDC conducted a survey of 1,583 exhibitors and buyers at the Gifts & Premium Fair, Home InStyle, and Fashion InStyle. The fair attracted fashion buyers and also drew a children’s product exhibitor’s interest in partnering with us to develop eco-friendly tableware. It is expected that this fair will bring us approximately US$100,000 in sales.” A German buyer at the Gifts & Premium Fair, Michael Baumann, a partner in Know How International GmbH & Co KG, said: “I sourced products from India, Vietnam and Bangladesh as souvenirs and giveaways for the European football league. Additionally, I identified a sports bag supplier and a recycled paper box supplier from Mainland China, as well as a metal souvenir supplier from Hong Kong, with a potential total order value of approximately US$2.3 million to US$2.8 million. I am also highly interested in the licensed animated characters from a mainland exhibitor, with a potential order value of up to US$600,000.”In response to global trade challenges, exhibitors are prioritising market diversification and actively pursuing new customer acquisition. Hong Kong exhibitor Moral Team Holdings Ltd has participated in the Gifts & Premium Fair for 17 years, focusing on the development of eco-friendly bag products. The company’s Marketing & Ecommerce Manager, Charlotte Chui, said: “The new US tariff policies have impacted 10% of our export share, prompting us to focus more on the Asian market at this stage. The Gifts & Premium Fair has provided us with a platform to connect with buyers from Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. Our mid- to long-term plan is expanding into the Australian and European markets. The concurrent fairs have attracted interest from fashion and houseware buyers. On the first day alone, we secured several orders from the Asian market and anticipate achieving total sales of over US$500,000 at the fair.”Fairs drive the development of high-value cultural and creative industriesCultural and creative products that combine design and functionality are attracting significant attention from buyers. Stanley Kwok, Director of KnitWarm Ltd, a Hong Kong exhibitor at Home InStyle, said “We showcased our patented heat-conductive smart textile technology products in the Cultural and Creative Avenue and Gerontech Living Pavilion. Buyers from Japan, Mainland China, Malaysia, Singapore, the UK and the US, as well as social workers in Hong Kong, have expressed interest in our four-in-one warmer blanket cushions and warmer band series. I connected with exhibitors from the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Hong Kong and more, and plan to make purchases of houseware products totalling US$50,000 to US$100,000 this year. I’m particularly interested in the Czech incense stick holder and look forward to future collaboration opportunities.” Global new materials at Fashion InStyle drive cross-sector interestThis year saw the launch of NEXT@Fashion InStyle at Fashion InStyle a new highlighted zone organised by the HKTDC and sponsored by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA) of the HKSAR Government. Han Chong, founder and creative director of Self-Portrait, joined as the zone’s ambassador. NEXT@Fashion InStyle was dedicated to establishing a collaborative platform for sustainable and new materials for buyers and exhibitors, as well as designer brands, successfully connecting a buyer from Malaysia, Richard Tsen, founder of CollbStore, with Indonesian exhibitor PT Miko Bahtera Nusantara (MYCL). Mr Tsen said: “I am very interested in the company’s mushroom leather material and was amazed by its solidness and coating after the baking process. This inspired me to apply it to my designer label. I also referred them to the Malaysian Furniture Design Institute to let them explore the creation of mushroom leather furniture. I believe it has the potential to make a significant impact and resonate within the Malaysian and wider Asian market.”Mary Ma, owner-principal of Textile Library, a mainland exhibitor at Fashion InStyle, expressed keen interest in leveraging the exhibition to explore establishing a base in Hong Kong. She said: “Hong Kong is a vibrant crossroads where eastern and western cultures meet. It connects factories across Southeast Asia and attracts European and American buyers.” Chinamind Next Interculture Group, the parent company of renowned fashion industry publication WWD China, also recognised the strategic advantages of Hong Kong as a gateway connecting the mainland with the world, signing a memorandum of understanding with the HKTDC during the fair.Diverse creativity unlocks new licensing opportunitiesChengdu Chenghau Butterflies Huatian Culture Development Co Ltd, one of the exhibitors at the HKILS, signed a cooperation agreement with Sureka.Z Limited worth RMB2 million during the show.
