(SeaPRwire) – Two individuals were stabbed in north London on Wednesday during an attack that police have now officially classified as a terrorist incident, sparking a large-scale emergency response and an ongoing counterterrorism probe.
Metropolitan Police counterterrorism chief Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor stated the attack has been formally designated as terrorism, as investigators work to uncover the motive and whether the Jewish community was specifically targeted.
Per the Metropolitan Police, officers were dispatched to Highfield Avenue in the Barnet borough at roughly 11:16 a.m. after reports of multiple stabbings. Both regular and armed officers responded alongside the London Ambulance Service.
Police reported that a 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is still being held in custody. Officials are working to confirm his nationality and background.
Taylor noted that two men, aged 76 and 34, received on-scene treatment for stab injuries before being transported to a hospital, where they are currently staying and receiving care.
Police shared that the suspect also assaulted responding officers before being restrained using a Taser. No law enforcement personnel sustained injuries.
Taylor explained that counterterrorism officers are leading the investigation, collaborating with security services to piece together the full details and build a comprehensive intelligence overview.
“While I must emphasize that this investigation is still in its early phases, we are moving quickly to gain a full understanding of exactly what took place,” Counter Terrorism Policing chief Laurence Taylor stated.
The stabbing took place in the Barnet region, close to Golders Green — an area renowned for its sizable Jewish community. Officials have noted the case is being investigated as a potential antisemitic incident, though a confirmed motive has not yet been established.
The stabbing occurred in the Barnet area near Golders Green, a neighborhood with a well-established large Jewish population, and police shared that one line of their investigation is whether the attack was specifically aimed at London’s Jewish community, even as a confirmed motive remains unconfirmed.
Shomrim, a volunteer neighborhood patrol group for Orthodox Jewish communities, posted a statement on X stating that a man spotted “carrying a knife” on Golders Green Road was detained by group members prior to the arrival of police. The group asserted the suspect had tried to target Jewish members of the public — a detail that police have not yet independently verified.
Shomrim also reported that two victims received medical care from Hatzola, a volunteer emergency medical service.
Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams stated that officers “quickly deployed a Taser and arrested the suspect before he could inflict additional harm,” adding that investigators are “evaluating all potential motives” and will keep a prominent police presence in the local area.
Williams noted that police are “mindful of the substantial distress and anxiety this incident is likely to spark among locals,” and will stay in the area to conduct further inquiries and reassure residents.
This attack occurs amid growing worries about antisemitic incidents throughout the United Kingdom. Officials are reviewing recent London-based incidents but have not found any direct link to this attack.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence, labeling attacks on Jewish residents “an assault on Britain,” while London Mayor Sadiq Khan stated that antisemitism has “no place” within the city.
Conservative Member of Parliament Kemi Badenoch stated, “Jewish people in our nation are facing consistent attacks. This is no longer just an increasing trend. There is an epidemic of violence targeting Jewish individuals, and this now qualifies as a national emergency that the government and public bodies must address accordingly.”
Dov Forman, a Golders Green resident and Holocaust educator, characterized the attack as part of a wider, deeply worrying pattern that he has observed.
“Yet again, terror has arrived right at our doorstep here in Golders Green, at the core of London’s Jewish community,” Forman shared. “Earlier today, two men who were visibly Jewish were stabbed in what is being classified as an antisemitic attack. For many people, this is not being viewed as a standalone act of violence, but rather as part of a wider, deeply disturbing trend. There is rising worry that extremist rhetoric and Islamist extremism — including calls to ‘globalize the intifada’ — have helped create an environment where hatred of Jews is becoming more accepted, unregulated, and dangerously emboldened.”
Israeli President Isaac Herzog stated that he was “appalled by yet another violent attack on Jews taking place in broad daylight on the streets of London” and called for immediate action.
“No Jew anywhere across the globe should be targeted solely because of their religious faith,” Herzog noted, adding that officials must act “before another antisemitic attack takes place.”
As the investigation proceeds, officials are asking anyone with relevant information to reach out to police.
Per the Community Security Trust, the count of reported antisemitic incidents across the U.K. has risen sharply since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel and the subsequent Gaza war. The group recorded 3,700 incidents in 2025, up from 1,662 in 2022.
