(SeaPRwire) – Apple TV serves as a sanctuary for sci-fi series that other streaming platforms might label too “odd.” A post-apocalyptic mystery show based on a self-published e-book? Sure thing—give it four seasons. An alternate history series with a fresh spin on the space race? Break out the aging makeup, since this show will span actual generations. A quirky corporate sci-fi series featuring a beloved comedy actor? Make sure your trophy shelf has space for those ten Emmys.
Yet the most peculiar sci-fi series on Apple TV might be Murderbot, which stars Alexander Skarsgard as a security droid that’s hacked its own programming and now uses space soap operas to fight off the monotony of its work. The show has a distinct vibe, drawn from Martha Wells’ popular book series as its source material. But this series might not stick around forever—and its run could be briefer than initially expected.

For fans of any sci-fi show adapted from source material, one constant worry hangs over the story: what happens when the books run out? Luckily, it seemed Murderbot wouldn’t face this issue anytime soon—The Murderbot Diaries’ eighth book is due out in May, and a ninth has already been approved.
But that might be the end of the line for this saga. “I probably won’t start the next Murderbot book until at least the end of the year,” Martha Wells told Polygon. “I have some loose concepts for it, but I don’t know exactly what it’ll be yet. And it might be the final book.”
Even so, nine books are a solid amount of source material—surely enough to keep the show going for a while, right? Unfortunately, it looks like the series will get through these books much faster now that Season 1 has covered the first book, All Systems Red. “Our plan is to blend future books together because, like the audience, we’ve grown attached to the first book’s team of characters and don’t want to do a season without them,” co-showrunner Chris Weitz told ComicBook in May 2025. “So Season 2 would likely combine books two, three, and four.” At that rate, Murderbot might only manage four seasons before it runs out of source material.

Naturally, the show could keep going even after the source material ends, but that path has a major warning attached: Game of Thrones. Similar to Murderbot, HBO’s hit fantasy series had what seemed like endless source material, but it dried up quickly. The subsequent seasons faced heavy criticism, resulting in a final season that’s now notoriously poorly received. In 2026, no one wants their show’s conclusion to be compared to that.
But Murderbot shouldn’t go that far anyway. The series’ core—even if it’s mechanical—is Murderbot itself, and only Wells can authentically capture its voice. Knowing about the Apple TV adaptation, when she finally starts writing book 9, she can do so with the awareness that it might also mark the show’s conclusion.
Murderbot Season 1 is now streaming on Apple+.
