(SeaPRwire) –   As Luke Skywalker wisely noted, no one’s ever truly gone — and that rings just as true for the characters in Star Wars’ far-off galaxy as it does for the shows they inhabit. Nearly two years have passed since The Acolyte launched on Disney+, introducing fresh ideas and challenging the franchise as we knew it before its sudden cancellation in 2024. Despite its divisive reception, the show was axed for more concrete reasons: low viewership and the high cost of producing its first season. While that might have seemed hard to believe at the time, the more distance we put between ourselves and The Acolyte’s cancellation, the less it feels like the outcast some were so eager to paint it as.

The chances of another season of The Acolyte are next to zero, but that hasn’t stopped people from watching (or rewatching) the series. Two years later, the show is back on Disney+’s charts, once again trending in the streamer’s Top 10 TV shows. There’s a logical explanation for this too: Disney+ featured the series alongside its latest Star Wars adventure, Maul – Shadow Lord. The platform suggests The Acolyte as the next watch after Maul, so it’s likely viewers are taking that recommendation and diving into some High Republic-era drama.

Disney+’s choice to pair The Acolyte with Maul – Shadow Lord makes total sense. Both are as dark as the Star Wars saga gets, and both focus on the growing bond between a shadowy, charismatic Sith and the former Jedi padawan they’re determined to turn to the dark side. Maul’s efforts to recruit Devon Izara in Shadow Lord mirror the dynamic between the mysterious Qimir (Manny Jacinto) and Osha Aniseya (Amandla Stenberg) — though the latter has more depth. What’s more, The Acolyte embraces the steamy romantic tension that other Star Wars projects have fumbled so badly over the years. All these elements make The Acolyte feel uniquely its own: like any Star Wars story, it has flaws, but unlike Maul, it dares to break away from the same tired plot that most other Star Wars tales (especially those set in the animated post-prequel era) follow.

Ironically, the fact that The Acolyte only has one season makes it perfect for a quick binge. It wasn’t designed to be a one-and-done story, but it works well enough as one. Of course, it’s disappointing that we may never learn how Qimir and Osha’s master-acolyte relationship plays out, or explore the intrigue that sparked the Jedi Order’s downfall. But it’s nice to see The Acolyte getting a fresh look, free from the bad-faith backlash that made discussing the show during its run impossible. The Acolyte’s return to the Top 10 probably won’t make Lucasfilm rethink its cancellation mistake, but it might signal that this universe isn’t done yet. This renewed curiosity could lead to more stories in other media; there’s clearly a demand for it.

The Acolyte is available to stream on Disney+.
