Fans flocked to “House of the Dragon” craving more “Game of Thrones.” With dragons and the Dance of Dragons promised, hype soared. But five years on, the series has yet to fully deliver. Season 2 was a letdown, stalling just before the Battle of the Gullet.
Season 3 starts with bloodshed but stays true to its slow pace. It’s less about action and more about consequences. The Battle of the Gullet, though bloody, takes a backseat to the dread and grief it brings. Sharako Lohar’s charm adds to the moment.
The battle is a speed bump to palace intrigue. For the first time, the show feels unpredictable. Characters seem doomed, and small victories are overshadowed by fear. It’s like the Red Wedding stretched across a season.
The show shines in quiet scenes. An episode following Rhaenyra dealing with mundane matters is more compelling than Daemon’s interest in the “Song of Ice and Fire.” Ormund Hightower’s rise may bring another big battle.
Old problems persist. The ensemble isn’t balanced, and loose ends like Criston Cole clog the narrative. Smoothing Rhaenyra and Alicent’s rivalry is a risk but could give actors new dynamics.
With one season left, flaws may be part of the design. Those wanting non – stop action may find this slow. But the show is confident in being a chess match, which could make this the best season.
