Little is known about Dunk’s origins, though in fairness, he knew little himself. Raised as an orphan in Flea Bottom, the impoverished district near King’s Landing, he remained ignorant of his parentage, assuming himself both orphaned and likely illegitimate. (Some viewers speculate he might share blood with Brienne of Tarth, given their shared stature, though this remains unconfirmed.) He survived by scavenging assorted meats for vendors who prepared “bowls of brown,” Flea Bottom’s staple fare.
As a youth, he was taken on by Ser Arlan of Pennytree as a squire following the death of Ser Arlan’s nephew in combat. Thereafter, Dunk faithfully attended to Ser Arlan’s needs, caring for his three horses — Thunder, Chestnut, and Sweetfeet — overseeing his arms and armor, and journeying with him throughout Westeros. Our introduction to Dunk in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms occurs shortly after Ser Arlan’s demise, leaving Dunk to forge his own reputation as a knight.

Tragically, years later, an accident potentially linked to wildfire or magic precipitates the Tragedy of Summerhall, a catastrophic inferno that claims the lives of both King Aegon V and Ser Duncan the Tall.
