The final phase of House of the Dragon is upon us. Since its 2022 premiere, this HBO prequel has solidified Game of Thrones as a long – lasting franchise. Unlike its predecessor, it has a clear end in sight, with Season 4 likely to be the last. But how will the Dance of Dragons between the Targaryen factions conclude?
After the First Battle of Tumbleton in Season 3’s finale, the next major event in the book is the Fall of Dragonstone. Aegon and Sunfyre take the stronghold, defeating Baela and Moondancer. Moondancer perishes, while Baela is taken hostage. The conflict’s sides then swap headquarters, with Rhaenyra in King’s Landing and Aegon at Dragonstone.
Rhaenyra’s jealousy of Nettles, possibly Daemon’s lover, leads Daemon to Harrenhal, where Aemond has been hiding. The Battle of the God’s Eye follows, a tragic clash where both Daemon and Aemond, along with their dragons, plunge into the lake and disappear. Back in King’s Landing, Rhaenyra loses the people’s trust after Helaena’s death. The smallfolk believe she ordered the murder, and a riot at the Dragonpit results in the loss of many dragons.
The Hightowers in Tumbleton plan a siege on King’s Landing but are interrupted by Addam Velaryon and an army from the Riverlands. The Second Battle of Tumbleton is costly for both sides, with many casualties including Daeron Targaryen and Addam Velaryon. Rhaenyra, despite a technical win, is at a disadvantage. She sells her crown to return to Dragonstone, where she meets her end at the jaws of Sunfyre.
With Rhaenyra gone, Aegon seems to have an unrivaled claim to the throne. However, Lord Cregan Stark’s loyalty to the Blacks leads him to march on King’s Landing. Aegon II takes Aegon the Younger hostage but is later poisoned. The Dance of the Dragons officially ends when Aegon the Younger, now King Aegon III, marries his cousin Jahaera Targaryen. This marks the beginning of the end for the House of the Dragon.
Yet, the show has deviated from the source material, Fire & Blood, season by season. Some plot points from the book, like Nettles hiding from Rhaenyra and Ulf’s assassination, seem impossible now. In the Game of Thrones universe, Joffrey Baratheon mentions Rhaenyra being eaten by Aegon’s dragon, but that’s the only link we have. The show’s ending could diverge wildly from the book.
Given these changes, the final season of House of the Dragon is sure to be a roller – coaster. Fans can only speculate about how the showrunners will tie up the loose ends and bring this epic saga to a close.
