The first season of the live-action One Piece adeptly translated the iconic anime, yet it only covered the story’s initial phase, which saw Monkey D. Luffy begin his quest to find the One Piece and become King of the Pirates by gathering his crew and aiming for the Grand Line. Season 2 now officially embarks on the central narrative, also acquiring a brand-new subtitle: .

Details about the upcoming season have been gradually revealed, such as the inclusion of the sinister assassins from , but the newest trailer confirms the specific story arcs audiences can expect when the season debuts next month. One of these plots introduces a charming new member to the Going Merry’s crew, who nevertheless has one of the most tragic origins in the entire One Piece saga. Watch the trailer here:

The preview is filled with bizarre creatures, ranging from dinosaurs and whales to small otters armed with seashells. However, one character will be instantly recognizable to anime fans: Tony Tony Chopper, the highly intelligent reindeer who ate a Devil Fruit granting him the ability to transform into an animal-human hybrid. This means he can shift back to his natural reindeer state—a glimpse of which is seen in the trailer—but he most often appears as a small, two-legged creature sporting a hat.

In the One Piece story, the Straw Hat crew encounters Chopper after Nami becomes sick, compelling them to dock at the snowy Drum Island. The sole medical expert there is Dr. Kureha (played by Katey Sagal in the series), with Chopper serving as her assistant. During this arc, Luffy discovers Chopper’s past: the reindeer was adopted and mentored by the elderly Dr. Hiriluk, who taught him medicine. Dr. Hiriluk eventually banished Chopper, who only understood too late that this was done because the doctor was dying from a terminal illness. A particularly poignant scene in the trailer shows Chopper seated beside Dr. Hiriluk gazing at the moon, indicating this heartfelt backstory will be part of the Drum Island adaptation.

While One Piece is famous for its exaggerated action and humorous personalities, it also possesses a genuine emotional core. The second season will deliver ample excitement via the Borque Works assassins, but not at the cost of the compelling storytelling that has captivated fans for years. With just one month remaining until the next live-action chapter arrives, this is the perfect opportunity to catch up with these pirates and witness them fully embrace their destiny as they continue their epic pursuit of legendary treasure.

One Piece: Into the Grand Line premieres March 10 on Netflix.
