Marvel has a Sam Wilson problem, and the new Avengers: Doomsday clip puts it front and center. Ant-Man gets so excited that he calls Steve Rogers “Cap” while Sam Wilson stands right there. Sam is the current Captain America. The joke is supposed to be charming. It comes across as a confession. The MCU still doesn’t know how to treat its own successor. This is the industry’s deepest concern. A franchise that cannot promote the new face will eventually lose its audience.
Let’s walk through what the clip and history show. Endgame ended with Steve handing the shield to Sam. Ant-Man’s fandom runs all the way back to Civil War. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier tied Sam’s arc to America’s ongoing prejudice. The finale collapsed. Brave New World became one of the MCU’s weakest post-Endgame films. Ant-Man was most likely in the Quantum Realm fighting Kang the Conqueror when Sam stepped into the public role. That explains the slip. It does not explain why Marvel chooses it as a punchline. Chris Evans has been circling a return since he put down the shield. Marvel spent energy on Steve’s legacy, not Sam’s. A vocal minority rejected Sam. Steve, not the company, defended Sam’s right to exist. Even cosplayers in Sam’s gear still get mistaken for Falcon. Doomsday now brings Thor and Steve back as leaders. Three Caps exist if you count Wyatt Russell’s US Agent. It’s brand clutter. The movie opens December 18.
Now look at the commercial logic. Legacy heroes are safe. New heroes require costly commitment. Sam needed a writer and a studio willing to defend him. Instead he became a placeholder. Feige likely always knew Steve would return. The Avengers brand needs box office. The safest draw is old faces. But every return cheapens the handoff. If Steve keeps showing up, Sam never legitimizes. If audiences stop caring about new heroes, the future collapses. This is a loop. Each nostalgic cameo buys one bump and burns more trust. Doomsday is the test. The clip says Marvel wants nostalgia money and forward-moving buzz. Those goals collide when Ant-Man fumbles Sam’s name. A bad joke can be forgiven. A studio that doesn’t believe in its current Captain America cannot be. The market will punish that sooner or later, and the franchise will have no one to blame but itself.
