From a technical standpoint, the sprawling Monsterverse series serves as a prequel. Season 2 unfolded after the events of the 2014 Godzilla film, while also featuring flashbacks to the 1950s that set it prior to 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. If juggling all those timelines and lore feels overwhelming, fear not—even with Season 2, Monarch is gearing up for a gentle reboot. Concerned about how Kong and Godzilla’s narratives connect to the broader film universe? Don’t be, because Titan X has arrived!
A newly unveiled trailer for Monarch Season 2 hints at a surprise: While Kong’s Season 1 finale cameo was significant, he might not be the Titan audiences need to fear most. Enter Titan X—a brand-new colossal creature!
Monarch Season 2 Trailer Teases Titan X
The Season 2 trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters appears to return us to the world of 2017, which is . In that near-present timeline, Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) is anxious about a threat released from Axis Mundi—the eternal Hollow Earth domain where Titans dwell. We also catch glimpses of Keiko (Mari Yamamoto) in the present, alongside her granddaughter Cate (Anna Sawai), apparently collaborating at Monarch. (Axis Mundi’s effects have kept Keiko youthful, making her roughly the same age as Cate.)
Flashbacks to the younger Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) are also included, likely set during his unaccounted-for 1980s years, and
But the trailer’s biggest reveal is that Cate, Lee, and the rest are fixated on a creature that’s neither Kong nor Godzilla—instead, it’s a new sea-dwelling behemoth dubbed “Titan X.”

The trailer offers only brief glimpses of the monster, but it appears to have a double-pupiled eye, spikes, and what look like multiple tentacles. The trailer’s closing shot shows Titan X in the ocean, swimming alongside a whale that looks minuscule by comparison.
Notably, this monster doesn’t appear in newer Monsterverse films such as 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. For now, how it fits into that future timeline remains a mystery. It’s also unknown how or why Monarch’s human team released this creature, or what its exact abilities are—even though it’s enormous.
Regardless, Monarch Season 2 is already dropping a twist ahead of its premiere. We thought we knew which monsters to fear this season, but Titan X’s arrival proves us wrong. Will this new monster spark an epic showdown with Kong, Godzilla, and other fan favorites? Here’s hoping.
