Lucasfilm(SeaPRwire) - There is significant, albeit cautious, excitement surrounding The Mandalorian and Grogu due to its importance to the Star Wars franchise. As the first theatrical release for the series in seven years, it is intended to pave the way for future films. However, the transition of Din Djarin and Grogu to the big screen may also signal the conclusion of their original Disney+ journey. Following three successful seasons of The Mandalorian, a fourth was initially planned; according to director Jon Favreau, this season was intended to lay the groundwork for the ongoing narrative in the series Ahsoka. Ultimately, a combination of the show's renewal, the SAG-AFTRA strikes, and the WGA strikes led Lucasfilm to pivot toward a standalone film format.Favreau noted that this transition required significant effort. Because the scripts for the fourth season were already completed, they could not simply be adapted into a movie. As he explained in SFX Magazine, the original scripts were written with the assumption that the audience had seen the entire series and were designed to lead directly into the second season of Ahsoka, specifically highlighting Grand Admiral Thrawn as a mounting threat to the galaxy.Din and Grogu’s adventures could officially be coming to an end. | LucasfilmAt the time, Lucasfilm was developing an Avengers-style crossover event that would have unified the storylines of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and potentially The Book of Boba Fett. While such a team-up remains possible, the shift in scope for Din and Grogu’s narrative may have permanently altered their trajectory, potentially marking the end of The Mandalorian as fans have known it.Favreau has consistently maintained that The Mandalorian and Grogu is designed as a standalone experience. He describes it more as the debut season of a new project rather than a spinoff, aiming to be accessible even to viewers unfamiliar with the previous series. He told SFX that while the film remains deeply rooted in the Star Wars universe, it is crafted to be fully enjoyed as a self-contained story. However, the film’s impact on the broader galaxy appears to be shrinking. In contrast to Ahsoka Season 2, which Favreau notes addresses the Imperial Remnant on a much grander scale, The Mandalorian and Grogu offers a more grounded, localized perspective of the ongoing events.Ahsoka has “grabbed the baton” from The Mandalorian, for better or worse. | LucasfilmWhile The Mandalorian was once tasked with driving this new era of Star Wars forward, Favreau suggests that Ahsoka has now taken over that responsibility, moving the conflict with Thrawn into its next phase. Din and Grogu are now largely free to pursue independent adventures with fewer ties to the larger galactic plot.Regardless, it is unlikely that another season of The Mandalorian will follow. The move to feature films has fundamentally changed the series' direction. Transforming the fourth season into a movie has created a new narrative path, leaving the future of these characters uncertain. As Ahsoka becomes the primary vehicle for the Thrawn-centered storyline, The Mandalorian and Grogu feels increasingly like a final chapter for its protagonists. While they may still appear as the conflict with the Imperial Remnant escalates, Lucasfilm appears to be streamlining the timeline, prioritizing the Ahsoka and Thrawn narrative arc over further solo adventures for the duo.The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22. ‘The Last Of Us’ Season 3 May Add Nuance to a Villainous Character
HBO(SeaPRwire) - While many games utilize zombies merely as cannon fodder for mindless action, The Last of Us distinguished itself by offering a fresh perspective. Beyond its ecological take on the undead, the series prioritizes the intricate lives of the desperate, grieving, and dangerous survivors navigating a post-apocalyptic world. Although the zombie genre has explored these themes since the days of George A. Romero, video games frequently favor the disposable thrill of combat over examining the moral dilemmas faced by surviving individuals and societies—a trap that The Last of Us and its sequel actively avoid. These complexities are central to the first game, and the sequel deepens them through a narrative focused on vengeance, tragic misunderstandings, and the fallout of ego-driven choices. The second season of HBO’s adaptation covered the first half of Part 2, introducing the rivalry between the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), a Seattle-based militia, and the Seraphites, a religious fundamentalist group that blames modern excess for the outbreak. This ongoing feud mirrors the intense animosity between Ellie and Abby, and new casting news suggests that Season 3 will introduce a Seraphite character who acts as a pivotal force in the story's second half.Abby and Ellie’s brutal conflict resembles the unending struggle between the WLF and the Seraphites. | HBOVariety recently reported that Li Jun Li has been cast as Miriam, a devout Seraphite and the mother of Lev and Yara, characters who will also make their debut in Season 3, portrayed by Kyriana Kratter and Michelle Mao. Li recently appeared in the horror film Sinners, where she played Grace Chow.In The Last of Us Part 2, Miriam raises her children within the Seraphite sect, instilling in them a deep devotion to the group’s Prophet. She is devastated when Lev reveals his identity as a boy, leading her to banish him; Yara subsequently leaves to protect her brother. Miriam then brands both children as apostates and begins a hunger strike to atone for their perceived transgressions. After Lev and Yara are rescued by Abby, Lev attempts to return to the Seraphites to persuade his mother to join them, but she responds with verbal abuse and violence, forcing Lev to kill her in self-defense.Lev’s tragic reunion is one of the most heartbreaking moments in a heartbreaking game. | Sony Interactive EntertainmentAlthough Lev and Yara’s mother is unnamed and has a minor role in the game, casting an actress of Li Jun Li’s caliber provides a prime opportunity to grant Miriam greater depth and significance. While her rejection of Lev’s gender identity is vital to his character arc, the television adaptation has the potential to explore how her choice to alienate her children pushes her further into religious extremism while expanding her presence within the community. The story of Yara and Lev—children raised in a cult who eventually flee—perfectly illustrates how human beings are capable of inflicting profound harm within the world of The Last of Us. Hopefully, the series will not only adapt their narrative but also broaden it to maximize its emotional impact. The Last of Us season 3 is set to debut in 2027. 28 Years Later, a Cult Fantasy Classic Is Enjoying a Magical Second Life
Warner Bros/Kobal/Shutterstock(SeaPRwire) - What qualifies a successful film for a "legacyquel"? For the past decade, this trend seemed exclusive to "Dad Movies" and established genre classics, but this year marks a significant change. In Hollywood's intense effort to transform standalone films into franchises and capitalize on nostalgia, it's now venturing into an unexpected territory: the "chick flicks" from the very early 2000s. This May, a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, decades in the making, is set to arrive, and it won't be the only film of its kind experiencing a revival. There's also the forthcoming sequel to Practical Magic, widely regarded as a beloved cult classic for a particular generation of witches. Unlike the Meryl Streep-led fashion comedy that followed it years later, Practical Magic did not achieve substantial box office success. However, this didn't prevent it from becoming a favorite spooky movie for numerous sleepovers in the 2000s. In the 1998 original, directed by Griffin Dunne, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman portrayed two sisters born into a family of witches. While their magical escapades are perfect for any Halloween mood board, a curse haunting their lineage constantly disrupted their happiness. Due to a spell cast by a heartbroken ancestor, any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is destined for tragedy. Practical Magic explored this premise with both tragic and comedic elements, following the recently widowed Sally (Bullock) and the free-spirited Gillian (Kidman) on an enchanted journey. Its sequel, conversely, aims to break this curse permanently. The original Practical Magic primarily focused on Sally's efforts to open her heart again after losing her first husband to the Owens family curse. She developed feelings for the detective investigating what appeared to be suspicious murders from an external perspective. The fact that Aidan Quinn will not be reprising his role as Gary Hallet seems to confirm his tragic fate. A similar destiny likely awaits Lee Pace's mysterious new character (who may or may not be romantically pursuing Gilly). This is also a challenge that Sally's daughters (played by Maisie Williams and Joey King, taking over from Alexandra Artrip and Evan Rachel Wood) will face as they experience love for the first time. That is, unless the Owens family can find a solution. According to the official synopsis, "the Owens sisters must confront the dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all." The sequel's initial trailer hints at an even grander adventure; provided it retains the original's eerie charm, Practical Magic 2 could achieve the box office success its predecessor never did.Practical Magic 2 is scheduled for release in theaters on September 11. 5 Years Later, Star Wars Has Just Shed Light On A Bizarre Timeline Problem
Lucasfilm(SeaPRwire) - Maul: Shadow Lord is set at a fascinating juncture in the Star Wars timeline, falling in the few years between Order 66 and the official launch of the Rebellion. Just like the ascent of most fascist governments, the new Empire at first looks like the start of a new era, but that positive impression quickly fades. This is a compelling turning point for the franchise, and it also sits fairly early on in official Star Wars canon. The only major content that takes place before this time frame is the prequel trilogy, the events of The Acolyte, and the High Republic saga — that’s basically all we have right now. This small detail makes one line of dialogue in the series far more confusing — and it could potentially reveal an entire unexamined chapter of Star Wars canon that we haven’t seen yet. In Episode 5 of Star Wars: Maul —Shadow Lord, Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki meditates on the Empire’s slow, steady takeover of the galaxy. “Worry not,” he says. “Over the course of my long life, I have watched the galaxy endure many changes. Tyranny is always defeated. We have to hold onto hope.” It’s clear Eeko-Dio Daki has lived through plenty of events over his presumed long life. | LucasfilmThis line doesn’t feel out of place for Star Wars — after all, hope is the most iconic, central theme across the entire saga. But when Daki says he watched the galaxy go through many changes, what exactly is he referencing? The first question we need to answer is how old he actually is. His species, Mosyk, has never appeared in Star Wars before, but we can get clues about the species’ typical lifespan from a behind-the-scenes meta detail. In a trivia post on StarWars.com, the show’s crew revealed they nicknamed Eeko-Dio Daki “Dino Jedi.” If he is the Star Wars equivalent of a dinosaur and still alive, it’s safe to assume his lifespan is measured in centuries. With that centuries-long lifespan in mind, what big changes could he have witnessed before Order 66 and the Empire’s rise? There is almost no matching content within current official canon. Right now, the earliest story we’ve explored in the official Star Wars timeline is The High Republic: Convergence, which takes place 382 years before the events of A New Hope. In the grand scope of galactic history, that is not very long at all — Yoda was still very much middle-aged when that story unfolded. Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki’s line could be teasing more Star Wars projects set in the distant past of the galaxy. | LucasfilmAnd even across the entire The High Republic line of books and comics, full-scale galactic tyranny is not a pressing threat. While there are plenty of frightening villains in this era, they are more similar to pirates and raiders than large powers seeking to rule the entire galaxy. The High Republic is the period when the Jedi were at the peak of their power, and that golden reign lasted straight up until the Empire rose to power. So if Daki isn’t referring to any event that happened after the start of the High Republic, what could he mean? Is this our first clue that the Star Wars universe will expand into its own ancient history? We already know that James Mangold’s upcoming film will cover the very origins of the Jedi Order itself — perhaps that project will act as a prelude to one of the epic wars from the old Legends continuity, like the brutal fight between the Jedi and Sith for control of the entire galaxy. It’s easy to forget that by the start of the prequel trilogy, the Republic had already existed in an era of (relative) peace for centuries. If tyranny has repeatedly changed the galaxy and then been defeated, those events clearly happened long before any story Star Wars has told so far. But as always, galactic history holds far more secrets than you could ever imagine. Maul: Shadow Lord is available to stream now on Disney+. MHIEC Completes Improvement of Core Equipment at Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Facility in Kagoshima City
Hokubu Waste-to-Energy PlantTOKYO, Apr 22, 2026 - (JCN Newswire via SeaPRwire.com) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (MHIEC), a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has recently completed the improvement of core equipment for Hokubu Waste-to-Energy Plant, a municipal solid waste incineration facility in Kagoshima City. The work consisted of renovation of the stoker type incinerators, capable of processing 530 tonnes per day (tpd) (1), to extend the plant's service life and reduce CO2 emissions. This was a project spanning a six-year period from fiscal 2020 to fiscal 2025.The Hokubu Waste-to-Energy Plant was originally designed and constructed by MHI, and completed in March 2007. It comprises two units of stoker type incinerators, each with processing capacity of 265 tpd, plus related equipment, delivering power generation capacity of 8,700 kW.Under the refurbishment work, upgrades have been made to deteriorated major equipment, to achieve stable combustion and operation over the long term. Additionally, a low-temperature catalyst, a proprietary technology of MHIEC, was introduced to the SCR (Selective Catalytic NOx Reduction) system to improve the heat recovery rate (2), a low excess air ratio incineration technology (3) was adopted to improve combustion and the efficiency of the boiler, and the output of the steam turbines was increased from 8,700 kW to 10,005 kW, which will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 33.1% per year.MHIEC took over MHI's waste treatment plant business in 2008, acquiring the technological development capabilities in environmental systems and broad-ranging expertise in the construction and operation of waste management facilities both in Japan and overseas that MHI honed over many years. A strength of this company is its ability to propose total solutions from construction to operation based on its extensive track record. Going forward, MHIEC will continue to proactively make proposals to extend the life of existing waste treatment facilities, take measures against global warming, and reduce lifecycle costs (LCC) such as maintenance and management costs to contribute to the decarbonization of energy through the collection of energy from waste.(1) A stoker-type incinerator injects air from beneath heat-resistant fire grates, mixing the waste and other material by pushing it up, and allowing for efficient incineration. It is the most common system used for municipal solid waste.(2) An SCR system removes nitrous oxides (NOx), an air pollutant in exhaust gases, and typically operates at a high temperature. With MHIEC's technology, a catalyst that can remove NOx at low temperatures was introduced to the SCR system, eliminating the need to heat the exhaust gas to a high temperature and increasing the heat recovery rate.(3) The volume of air required for combustion is suitably distributed to reduce the volumes of combusted air and exhaust gas, increasing the efficiency of the boiler and decreasing the energy consumption of the induced draft fan.About MHI GroupMitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group is one of the world’s leading industrial groups, spanning energy, smart infrastructure, industrial machinery, aerospace and defense. (MHIEC), a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has recently completed the improvement of core equipment for Matsumori Waste-to-Energy Plant, a municipal solid waste incineration facility in Sendai City. MHIEC received the contract for the project from Sendai City in 2021, with work carried out over a five-year period from fiscal 2021 to fiscal 2025. The renovation of the stoker-type incinerators(1) with total processing capacity of 600 tons per day (tpd) will extend the operational life of the facility and reduce CO2 emissions. The Matsumori Waste-to-Energy Plant was originally designed and constructed by MHI, and completed in August 2005. It comprises three units of stoker-type incinerators, each with processing capacity of 200 tpd, plus related equipment, delivering power generating capacity of 17,500 kW.Under the refurbishment work, upgrades have been made to major equipment superannuated after more than 15 years in operation, to achieve stable combustion and operation over the long term. In addition, the thermal efficiency of the boiler has been enhanced with the introduction of EGR-PLUS®, a new combustion control system using an exhaust gas recirculation technology.(2) Further, a part of the soot blower that removes ash from the boiler tube has been changed from a conventional steam type to a pressure-wave (shock pulse) type,(3) reducing the amount of steam used for ash removal and allowing more steam for power generation, thereby boosting power generating capacity. These renovations have achieved a reduction in CO2 emissions of 12.1% annually.MHIEC took over the waste treatment plant business from MHI in 2008, acquiring technological development capabilities in environmental systems and broad-ranging expertise in the construction and operation of waste management facilities both in Japan and overseas. This extensive experience allows MHIEC to provide comprehensive solutions, from plant construction to operations. Apple’s Best Post-Apocalyptic Show Is Undergoing A Major Change For Season 3
Apple TV(SeaPRwire) - One overarching question looms over every post-apocalyptic narrative: the cataclysm itself. Some stories open with the apocalypse unfolding in the premiere before jumping forward to the distant future, such as The Last of Us or Fallout. Others withhold the full truth of the disaster until a pivotal scene, like Paradise, while some never address the event whatsoever, as seen in Twisted Metal.Yet Apple TV’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama Silo is taking an entirely fresh approach. Set to premiere in July, Season 3 will split its narrative between the post-apocalyptic present day—where Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) returns to her home silo after being exiled following a “cleaning” assignment—and the pre-apocalyptic past, where politicians work to prepare for the impending catastrophe. View the show’s first official teaser below:These expanded flashbacks didn’t come out of thin air. The closing moments of Season 2 cut to a near-future scene in Washington, D.C., where a congressman met with a journalist to discuss the recent tragic events. He handed her a gift: a duck-shaped Pez dispenser. He downplayed it as an item he impulsively picked up at a corner store, but for Silo fans, this seemingly trivial prop is a critical link to the show’s core plot. Hundreds of years later, this Pez dispenser remains as a preserved relic from “The Before Times.”Weaving in the series’ origin story is a creative choice directly adapted from the source material. Hugh Howey’s second installment in the Silo book trilogy, Shift, doesn’t introduce Juliette until its final pages, instead centering on events that don’t feature her, paired with intercut flashbacks. But when a lead actor as talented as Rebecca Ferguson is part of the cast, it makes sense to highlight her character—so much of Season 2 focused on her arc in a nearby silo. It appears Season 3 will now revisit the flashback sequences from Shift while continuing Juliette’s storyline. As teased in the Season 2 finale, Season 3 of Silo will be split between the present and the “Before Times.” | Apple TVThese flashbacks add a one-of-a-kind layer of intrigue for Silo viewers. Audience members have heard references to the Before Times before, but no one living inside the silo has any actual memory of the event that forced humanity to seek shelter underground. This means the story won’t hinge on characters knowing information the audience doesn’t; instead, viewers will experience dramatic irony, as we already understand exactly what transpired. Hopefully, we’ll get to watch Juliette and the other silo inhabitants piece this truth together themselves.Silo has a clear, structured roadmap for its run, as it was already renewed for a fourth and final season. That means every plot beat we see in Season 3—including the pre-apocalyptic flashback storyline—marks the start of the series’ final act. Silo has consistently delivered unforgettable, epic season finales, and with this extended run and an even larger narrative scope than prior seasons, it’s almost certain the show is building toward a landmark series finale.Silo Season 3 premieres July 3 on Apple TV. The Batman Part 2 May Finally Clarify an Overlooked Villain’s Origin After 36 Years
Warner Bros.(SeaPRwire) - As pre-production progresses, The Batman Part 2 is poised to leverage its position as a direct sequel to further Batman's evolution into a different type of hero. The film is confirmed to be broadening its cast of supporting characters, with Sebastian Stan joining as Harvey Dent and Scarlett Johansson as his wife, Gilda. Although Harvey's destiny to become the villain Two-Face is well-known, recent casting news suggests we may, ironically, witness his origin story directly, something never shown for Bruce Wayne and which has never been fully realized in a major motion picture.A recent Deadline report indicates veteran actor Charles Dance is finalizing negotiations to play Christopher Dent, Harvey's father, a significant figure never before portrayed in a live-action DC film. Dance, renowned for his role as Tywin Lannister (another infamous father from HBO’s Game of Thrones), is the most recent candidate for a role that has also considered Viggo Mortensen and Daniel Craig. While Christopher Dent is not a regular presence in Batman lore, his limited appearances are vital for understanding the motivations behind Harvey's eventual transformation. The Batman Part 2 might parallel the start of Bruce’s journey as Batman by giving us a glimpse at Harvey Dent’s childhood. | Warner Bros. PicturesAccording to the comics, Christopher Dent (first appearing in 1990's Batman Annual #14) is a violent alcoholic with undiagnosed dissociative identity disorder. He abused a young Harvey by flipping a coin to determine if he would beat his son for small transgressions. Though not a frequent character, modern DC continuity establishes the Dent family lineage includes a long history of lawyers and politicians who have influenced Gotham City, Christopher among them. The abuse Harvey endured led him to develop his own split personality—a ruthless, aggressively protective alter-ego that faded as he matured and escaped his father's control, only to reemerge after the accident that created Two-Face. In a dark parallel, Christopher serves as Harvey's version of Thomas Wayne.Only two live-action adaptations have previously attempted to incorporate Christopher Dent's influence or Harvey's early battles with DID: the Arkham video game series and Batman: The Animated Series. Director Matt Reeves now has a prime opportunity to be the first filmmaker to explore the tragic childhood elements of Harvey's past. He could highlight the contrasts between Harvey's harsh upbringing and Bruce's privileged life, potentially creating a complex dynamic between the characters if Harvey harbors resentment towards Bruce's advantages while collaborating with Batman.Unlike previous cinematic depictions of the character, Reeves has the chance to adapt the immense childhood trauma that birthed one of Batman’s most tortured villains. | DC ComicsDespite Christopher Dent being deceased in the original comics, there is no sign that Reeves will follow this path. In addition to being the abuser who fractured Harvey's psyche, it is possible Christopher could still be alive, remaining embedded in Gotham's political structure and continuing to manipulate his son for his own gain (some fan theories even suggest Harvey's father could be associated with the Court of Owls). In addition to the numerous surprises anticipated for The Batman Part 2, there is hope that the film will also provide the nuanced, complex origin story for one of Batman's most iconic villains that earlier portrayals have failed to achieve. The Batman: Part 2 is set to release on October 1st, 2027. Pope Leo Encourages African Youth to Stay, Serve Homelands Amid Rising Displacement Trends
(SeaPRwire) - Pope Leo XIV on Friday encouraged young Africans to focus on improving their home countries instead of seeking better opportunities abroad through migration. The head of the Roman Catholic Church addressed university students at the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaoundé, Cameroon, during his 11-day pastoral visit to the continent."Faced with the understandable inclination to migrate, which might suggest that a better future is more readily found elsewhere, I urge you, first and foremost, to embrace a fervent desire to serve your country and to apply the knowledge you gain here for the benefit of your fellow citizens," Pope Leo stated.Amidst rising displacement in Africa due to economic and political challenges, Pope Leo emphasized that the continent's younger generations should be "committed to society," responsive to their nations' needs, and actively address systemic issues domestically."Africa, in truth, must be liberated from the blight of corruption. For young people, this understanding must be ingrained during their formative years," he asserted."These are the embodiments of wisdom and justice that the African continent requires."He further explained that through education and spiritual development, "you learn to become architects of the future of your respective nations and of a world that is more just and humane."According to the World Migration Report, the majority of displacement in Africa is internal, with 21 million Africans recorded as residing in another African country in 2020.Migration from Africa to overseas destinations has also seen a consistent increase, more than doubling between 1990 and 2020.In 2020, approximately 11 million Africans reportedly migrated to Europe, 5 million to Asia, and 3 million to North America. The primary drivers of displacement are largely attributed to political conflict, corruption, violence, and economic hardship, including widespread poverty. These issues are particularly acute in countries such as Somalia, a significant source of refugees in Africa; Nigeria, which faces numerous natural disasters and economic pressures; and the regions surrounding Sudan, where civil war, political instability, and food insecurity have led to extensive displacement. The Pope's remarks follow recent criticism from President Donald Trump, who on Truth Social described the Pope as "weak on crime, and terrible for foreign policy."This criticism emerged after the pontiff's condemnation of the U.S.-Israeli conflict in Iran and his call for peace.Tensions between the two escalated days before the Pope stated last Saturday that it was "not in my interest at all" to engage in a debate with the president.Pope Leo has maintained that his focus is on fostering unity among nations and promoting peace and reconciliation. Two Decades Later, This Horror Film’s Fidelity to Its Video Game Source Remains Stunning
TriStar Pictures(SeaPRwire) - Video games have evolved significantly since the era of Spacewar! and Pong. While still primarily a commercial industry, gaming has benefited greatly from efforts to establish it as a legitimate art form, comparable to literature, music, or cinema. Today, when discussing "video games as art," titles like The Last of Us, 2018’s God of War, and Disco Elysium are frequently mentioned as prime examples. Although these modern titles are excellent, it seems the late 90s and early 2000s were when the medium truly demanded respect. One franchise from that period stood out as concrete evidence of gaming's artistic potential: Silent Hill. The original 1999 game and its 2001 sequel, Silent Hill 2, are often cited as among the greatest video games ever made, and for good reason. Even in a world post-Resident Evil, the cerebral and surreal atmosphere of these first two titles was a unique artistic achievement. The survival horror genre, including later sequels in the series, has spent over two decades trying to replicate that atmosphere. It is ironic that while video games were fighting for artistic recognition, some of the worst game adaptations were being produced by studio executives who failed to grasp the source material's appeal. This makes Christophe Gans’ Silent Hill film remarkable as one of the few movies from that time that truly understood the game.During an era when Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil series was considered the high point of game adaptations, it is striking that the 2006 Silent Hill movie retained so much of the original narrative. Both stories involve a parent taking an adopted child to the foggy, quiet town of Silent Hill (Maine in the games, West Virginia in the film). After a car accident, the parent wakes to find the child missing and must explore the town's tragic occult secrets as reality shifts into a nightmarish alternate dimension. There are changes, most notably switching the protagonist from Harry Mason in the game to Rose Da Silva (Radha Mitchell) in the film. However, its faithfulness to the source material was rare at the time—endearing it to fans but confusing critics unfamiliar with the dense mythology.Admittedly, Silent Hill is not a perfect movie. The characters lack depth, reduced mostly to one-dimensional archetypes. Rose is the frantic mother who constantly professes love for her daughter Sharon, Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden) is the tough police officer out of her depth, and Alice Krige’s Christabella is a religious zealot. The dialogue is also poor; roughly 60% of the script involves Rose telling townspeople she needs to find her daughter, while the remaining 40% is clunky exposition attempting to explain Silent Hill's complex backstory—a difficult task given the structural differences between games and films.Christophe Gans chose to swap the lead character's gender to investigate the condemnation of femininity often seen in Abrahamic religions. | TriStar PicturesHowever, the enduring appeal of Gans’ adaptation lies in its visual and experiential success. Regardless of the script's flaws, Silent Hill masterfully captures the sensation of playing the game, particularly through its faithful recreation of the setting. The production design meticulously rebuilds iconic locations from the first two games, such as the decaying Midwich Elementary School, the sterile Alchemilla Hospital, and the Balkan Church, making them feel like authentic, forgotten places. As a high-concept film from 2006, the CGI inevitably shows its age, yet this actually works in Silent Hill’s favor. Like the game, the town periodically shifts into the Otherworld, a hellish industrial dimension reflecting the atrocities committed by the Brethren, a cult responsible for the town's condition. While some may view the effects as dated, they enhance the sense of unreality. Watching the environment around Rose corrode to reveal the rusted, blood-soaked aesthetic of the Otherworld is far more compelling than the polished but flat CGI often seen in contemporary films.Although Pyramid Head doesn't show up until Silent Hill 2 in the game series, the 2006 movie incorporates elements from both the second and third installments. | TriStar PicturesDespite the weak writing, the script and Gans’ direction effectively capture the story's psychological depth. Both the game and film reveal that Silent Hill is cursed due to the ritual burning of a young girl named Alessa, the doppelganger of Rose's daughter. An atmosphere of guilt and anguish hangs over the town, manifesting in grotesque creatures like the iconic Pyramid Head. These creative choices are not merely for aesthetic scares; they echo past sins, and Rose's mission to save her daughter mirrors how Alessa's mother abandoned her.Looking at the movie landscape in 2026, audiences are spoiled with video game adaptations that understand their source material. However, 2006 was a desolate time for such films. Christophe Gans’ Silent Hill was a rare exception, directed by someone passionate about capturing the game's artistic merit. Fans still hold the movie in high regard not just for its familiar monsters or settings, but because it was a genuine labor of love that translated the game's psychological horror to the big screen.Silent Hill is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Israel reveals transformative artillery system targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah during delicate truce
(SeaPRwire) - JERUSALEM: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have rolled out a new self-propelled howitzer to combat Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, employing it as a defensive weapon against Hezbollah assaults.Ro’em, the Hebrew term for thunder, could serve a critical function should the 10-day fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah collapse. A second round of negotiations focused on disarming Hezbollah, set to take place between the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors, is scheduled for Thursday in Washington, D.C. The ceasefire officially went into effect on Thursday.Ehud Bibi, the IDF's Chief Artillery Officer, told Digital that "The Ro’em brings a new capability to the Artillery Corps and the IDF as a whole, reshaping how firepower is employed on the battlefield. This marks a historic milestone, introducing a new era of more precise, faster, and more flexible fire enabling us to support troops on the ground more effectively."Per an IDF statement, "During the operation, troops carried out precise artillery strikes on multiple Hezbollah anti-tank and surface-to-surface missile launch sites, which had been used to launch attacks against IDF forces. The strikes were successful, delivering operational outcomes and rolling out new artillery capabilities, thus lessening the threat facing IDF troops and Israeli civilians."The IDF noted that these strikes were strictly defensive operations targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists amid the ceasefire. This howitzer has a maximum firing range of approximately 40 kilometers (roughly 25 miles). A three-person IDF soldier crew operates the Ro’em.Elbit Systems noted on its official website that the system "boasts automatic loading and gun laying capabilities, fast deployment and withdrawal times and a high rate of fire. It offers a protected cabin for a crew of three." Adding that, "Depending on the mission, SIGMA is capable of automatically selecting and loading the required projectile, propellant and fuze and laying the gun to optimally engage targets." Also known as SIGMA, the Ro'em is produced by South Carolina-based subsidiary of Elbit Systems of America.Hezbollah violated a previous November 2024 ceasefire, which was brokered by the U.S., when it launched missiles into Israel on March 2 in response to the joint Israel-Iran war on Iran’s regime. The Lebanese government and the Lebanese Armed Forces failed to adhere to a deadline in 2025 to disarm Hezbollah. The United Nations Security Council resolution 1701 also required that Hezbollah be disarmed following the 2006 war between Israel and Lebanon.According to an IDF statement sent to Digital about the modern howitzer, last Tuesday, "Troops from the 282nd Fire Brigade of the Artillery Corps, led by the ‘Ro’em’ branch at the Mali (Ground Training Center) Fire Center, conducted... their first operational firing using the "Ro’em" howitzer, in support of IDF troops operating in northern Israel."The statement continued that "The ‘Ro’em"’is a new howitzer recently introduced into IDF service, bringing advanced and innovative capabilities to the battlefield. It significantly increases the rate of fire, enables engagement at longer ranges compared to existing systems, and provides enhanced mobility and maneuverability in the field.Hezbollah attacks on Israel since March 2 resulted in the killing of 2 civilians and 15 Israeli soldiers. Reuters reported that Hezbollah has not disclosed its casualty figures.Lebanese authorities report that nearly 2,300 people in Lebanon have been killed since March 2. Those figures don't differentiate between Hezbollah terrorists and civilians.Speaking at a Memorial Day event for the country's fallen troops, the country's defense Minister Israel Katz pledged to ensure that Israelis in the north, who have faced massive aerial attacks from Hezbollah, will be secure."Even as we gather here to honor our fallen, after weeks of determined operations by IDF forces in southern Lebanon, our commitment to the residents of the north remains clear and unequivocal, to bring them security," Katz said. He noted that "If the Lebanese government continues not to fulfill its obligations, the IDF will do so through continued military activity."Reuters contributed to this report. Gunman at Mexican pyramid site threatened hostages with sacrifice, invoking location’s violent past
(SeaPRwire) - A video captured by one of his hostages indicates that the gunman responsible for killing a Canadian tourist and injuring multiple others at Mexico’s ancient pyramids on Monday allegedly boasted about sacrificing his victims.Julio César Jasso, a 27-year-old man said to be fixated on Adolf Hitler, yelled while aiming a gun at frightened tourists atop the Pyramid of the Moon at Mexico’s Teotihuacan ruins—located just outside Mexico City."Don’t move, or I’ll sacrifice you," he said, the New York Post reported."This was built for sacrifices. Not for visiting and taking a f******, s***** photo," he stated in a video filmed by a tourist.Jasso is said to have scheduled the shooting to align with the 27th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado and Adolf Hitler’s birthday."See. I keep my word. Two f****** Koreans are dead there. I sacrificed them like dogs," he said."You all, s***, who’ve come from f****** Europe, you’re not going back," he continued. At the Teotihuacan complex—just outside Mexico City—seven individuals were shot. The ruins are among Mexico’s most popular archaeological sites, attracting millions of global visitors annually to their imposing pre-Hispanic structures.Overall, 13 people sustained injuries. The details of the other injuries were not revealed, but some individuals fell during the shooting—including those who were climbing the pyramids. The local government reported that those transported to a hospital included six U.S. citizens, three from Colombia, one from Russia, one from Brazil, one from the Netherlands, and one from Canada. Mexican authorities noted that the youngest injured person was 6 years old, while the oldest was 61.Jasso, who acted on his own, died by suicide via a self-inflicted gunshot. Law enforcement officials later discovered a gun, a knife, and ammunition at the scene. This article is provided by a third-party content provider. Top Player Props for Canadiens-Lightning NHL Playoff Game on Tuesday, April 21
(AsiaGameHub) - The Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning face off this evening for Game 2 of their first-round NHL playoff series. The game begins at 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN2. Montreal secured a surprise victory in Game 1 on Sunday, led by Juraj Slafkovsky’s overtime goal which completed his hat trick in the 4-3 win. For tonight's matchup, DraftKings lists Tampa Bay as a -192 home favorite, with the over/under set at 5.5. Currently, the Lightning have attracted 76% of the total bets and 83% of the betting tickets. Leading Player Props: Canadiens vs. Lightning With Tampa Bay anticipated to recover, we have identified three player props for the Lightning and one for the Canadiens. Andrei Vasilevskiy OVER 21.5 Saves (-110) Andrei Vasilevskiy entered the postseason as the premier goaltender. His regular-season goals against average of 2.33 was second only to Colorado’s Scott Wedgewood (2.07). However, Wedgewood only made his first NHL playoff start during Sunday’s victory over the Kings. Consequently, we anticipate the veteran Vasilevskiy will bounce back tonight after recording just 15 saves in the series opener. Nikita Kucherov OVER 1.5 Points (+105) Nikita Kucherov finished the regular season with 130 points, trailing only Edmonton’s Connor McDavid for the league lead. Kucherov maintained his high level of play in Game 1, recording two assists and firing five shots on goal. Given that Tampa Bay is expected to dominate Montreal’s youthful defensive unit, Kucherov should be able to secure at least two points. Jake Guentzel OVER 2.5 Shots (-150) While the odds are a bit steep, Jake Guentzel plays a key role alongside Kucherov in maintaining offensive pressure for the Bolts. Guentzel had four shots on goal in the first game. He has surpassed this shot total in four of his previous six outings, including a four-shot performance against Montreal late in the regular season. Juraj Slafkovsky Anytime Goal Scorer (+195) It is surprising that Slafkovsky’s odds remain this high considering his scoring record against Tampa Bay. Beyond Sunday’s hat trick, the talented winger also netted four goals across four regular-season meetings with the Lightning. He also led all players with seven shots on goal against Vasilevskiy in Game 1. With his knack for generating dangerous opportunities, he is a strong candidate to find the net tonight. A new system to track material design processes
TSUKUBA, Japan, Apr 22, 2026 - (ACN Newswire via SeaPRwire.com) - Discovering and characterizing new materials is important for unlocking advances in fields like clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and improved infrastructure. Researchers use machine learning and other computational tools to help them, but the trial-and-error nature of the process creates specific challenges. The research produces large amounts of experimental and computational data, and scientists need tools that can track and store not only the results but also the chain of reasoning behind them.A newly developed system tracks and stores not only the results but also the chain of reasoning behind them, allowing researchers to review the decision making process for a greater transparency and reproducibility in materials science research.A new system called pinax, published in the journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials: Methods, provides precisely those features. Developed by engineers at Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), pinax captures the entire process of developing new materials, including machine learning workflows and decision-making processes. “By formalizing both successful and unsuccessful trial-and-error processes, pinax enhances reproducibility, accountability, and knowledge sharing while maintaining strict data governance,” says Satoshi Minamoto of NIMS, the study’s lead author. The new pinax system consists of three layers: the core machine learning infrastructure (bottom), the provenance recording and tracking that visualises the reasoning behind final results (middle), and the advanced feature layer for materials development (top). Credit: STAM-MMachine learning models are playing an ever-larger role in materials discovery and characterization. While the models are powerful tools, the reasoning processes they use are generally opaque. Researchers don’t know what considerations and trial-and-error processes went into their final predictions. “The system introduced in this study visualizes these invisible processes. This enables others to review, verify, and build upon the path to the conclusions,” says Minamoto.Minamoto highlights the importance of such access in applications where safety, reproducibility, and accountability are important, saying that this work “demonstrates how transparent AI systems can transform scientific discovery into a more reliable, efficient, and socially responsible endeavor.”The team tested pinax using two case studies: one on predicting steel properties and another using transfer learning to predict the thermal conductivity of polymers. The system made it possible to link the model’s performance predictions to the specific data or model aspects that influenced them, and to reproduce complex, multi-stage workflows. “In particular, the transfer-learning example highlights pinax’s ability to track how information flows between intertwined datasets and models, making every step in the reasoning process explicitly traceable,” says Minamoto. The engineers plan to expand pinax towards an autonomous, closed-loop materials discovery system. By integrating pinax’s tracking capabilities with automated experimental and simulation systems, they aim to create a loop that can use data generation, machine learning models, and decision-making systems to systematically and independently carry out the entire research cycle.Further information Satoshi MinamotoNational Institute for Materials Scienceminamoto.satoshi@nims.go.jpPaper: https://doi.org/10.1080/27660400.2026.2629051 About Science and Technology of Advanced Materials: Methods (STAM-M)STAM Methods is an open access sister journal of Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM), and focuses on emergent methods and tools for improving and/or accelerating materials developments, such as methodology, apparatus, instrumentation, modeling, high-through put data collection, materials/process informatics, databases, and programming. https://www.tandfonline.com/STAM-MDr Kazuya SaitoSTAM Methods Publishing Director SAITO.Kazuya@nims.go.jpPress release distributed by Asia Research News for Science and Technology of Advanced Materials. Graid Technology Launches Agentic AI Storage Portfolio to Eliminate KV Cache Bottlenecks
SUNNYVALE, CA, Apr 22, 2026 - (ACN Newswire via SeaPRwire.com) - Graid Technology, the pioneer in GPU-accelerated NVMe storage, today announced its Agentic AI Storage Portfolio: a purpose-built family of KV cache solutions designed to eliminate the storage bottleneck that stalls "always-on" production AI. The portfolio spans three deployment tiers: KV Cache Server, KV Cache Rack, and KV Cache Platform, all built on SupremeRAID™ technology. KV Cache Platform, the portfolio's highest tier, is purpose-aligned to NVIDIA's STX reference architecture, with native BlueField-4 DPU execution on the roadmap for H2 2026.As agentic AI moves from experimentation to production, the infrastructure assumptions that underpinned single-shot inference have broken down. Models running continuous multi-step tasks and maintaining context across hours of operation generate KV cache demands that overwhelm GPU HBM. The result: latency spikes up to 18x, GPU utilization as low as 50%, and model-level failures, including hallucinations and reasoning degradation, that are difficult to detect and costly to recover from.SupremeRAID™ addresses this directly, aggregating up to 32 NVMe drives into a single 280 GB/s virtual pool, bypassing the CPU via GPU Direct Storage, and delivering KV cache reads at 1.3ms- 77x faster than standard NVMe. The three portfolio tiers bring this capability to every deployment scale:KV Cache Server - single-node NVMe acceleration for individual inference servers and edge AI deployments. Available now.KV Cache Rack - rack-scale, partner-validated solutions co-engineered with leading server OEM partners for enterprise multi-GPU clusters. Available now.KV Cache Platform - Purpose-built for NVIDIA's STX reference architecture, with native BlueField-4 DPU execution and rack-scale storage expansion on the roadmap."A year ago, at GTC 2025, Jensen Huang predicted that storage would become GPU-accelerated for the first time. This year, NVIDIA turned that concept into an architecture with STX and CMX," said Leander Yu, CEO of Graid Technology. "Our KV Cache Portfolio is built for precisely this moment, delivering the storage performance that agentic AI demands, at storage-tier economics."For enterprises and infrastructure teams evaluating agentic AI deployments, the full deployment architecture, technical specifications, and NVIDIA STX compatibility details are available in the solution brief: Graid Technology Agentic AI Storage Portfolio: Purpose-built KV Cache Solutions for Inference at Scale. To learn more about Graid Technology's AI offerings, visit graidtech.com/ai.Media Inquiries:Andrea Eaken, Sr. Director of Marketing, Americas & EMEAandrea.eaken@graidtech.comAbout Graid TechnologyGraid Technology is building the storage backbone for the future of AI, enterprise, and high-performance computing. UK special forces confront personnel drain due to legal action concerns, raising questions for US military.
(SeaPRwire) - The United Kingdom’s elite Special Air Service (SAS) is experiencing a wave of resignations as soldiers express concern over potential years of legal investigation regarding their conduct on the battlefield, according to a report by The Telegraph.Insiders told the British news outlet that personnel from 22 SAS, the Army’s premier special forces unit, have requested early discharge due to frustration over inquiries into alleged war crimes in Northern Ireland, Syria, and Afghanistan. This concern is not limited to the British military.John Spencer, executive director of the Urban Warfare Institute, suggested that U.S. troops could encounter similar issues if political figures do not distinguish between valid investigations and politically charged campaigns."I welcome timely investigations of allegations of violations," Spencer told Digital, "but want our leaders to protect all our forces, special or not, from agenda or politicized ‘witch hunts.’"In Australia, the legal situation of Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith has become a significant concern for veterans who worry that elite personnel may face prolonged legal challenges following combat service.Roberts-Smith, the most decorated living soldier in Australia, has denied claims of war crimes in Afghanistan. In April, Australian officials charged him with five counts of murder stemming from his deployment there. For many British veterans, the situation in Australia highlights fears that this pattern could affect other Western armed forces, including those of the United States. The departures have impacted at least two SAS squadrons, with current and former personnel labeling the loss of experience a "threat to national security." Exact resignation numbers were withheld for security purposes. These exits come at a time when Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration is under fire regarding both the treatment of veterans and defense budget allocations. While there have been concerns regarding the size and readiness of the U.K. military, the government maintains it is addressing these issues. Official figures show total armed forces strength reached 182,050 as of January 1, 2026, which includes 136,960 regular personnel—an increase over the previous year. The administration has also promised the most significant sustained increase in defense funding since the Cold War. Military spending is projected to hit 2.6% of GDP by 2027, supported by an extra £5 billion this year and £270 billion in investments over the current Parliament. The U.K. further intends to reach a 3% GDP spending target by the end of the following Parliament.Current and former troops expressed a belief that the British legal system is now targeting those sent to fight on the government's behalf."If a soldier discharges their weapon, they are almost certainly going to get a knock at their door one day," George Simm, a former 22 SAS regimental sergeant major, told The Telegraph. "It feels like a betrayal and a break in the trust."The dispute focuses on ongoing probes into the activities of British special forces.Currently, 242 special forces members—including 120 active-duty soldiers—are involved in legal inquiries that cost approximately £1 million per month. These investigations cover operations in Syria, Northern Ireland, and Afghanistan.Critics argue these probes have fostered an environment where soldiers worry that split-second combat decisions will result in future prosecution.Andrew Fox, a former British Army officer and senior fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, told Digital that the bond between the government and its soldiers has been severely compromised."Soldiering contains a pact between the government and those they employ to use lethal force," Fox noted. "Soldiers will take human life within the rules set for them by international law, and in return, their governments should support them."This has been inverted, and international law has been weaponized and exploited by our enemies to persecute our soldiers. All too often, governments are coming down on the side of those enemies, not our troops."Fox added that it is logical for some soldiers to choose to leave the service."Of course, law breaking should be punished, but we are seeing a breakdown in trust between governments and their armed forces when politicians allow troops to be hounded through the courts unjustly," he stated.Spencer remarked that professional militaries rely on public confidence maintained through robust internal justice."A professional military holds the trust of its society because it lives by a strict ethical code, its laws, and its rules," Spencer told Digital. "That trust is what gives soldiers the unique authority to use lethal force in the worst conditions a human being can face."He emphasized that accusations of misconduct must be handled with speed and fairness."We need investigations that move quickly and fairly on any credible allegation," he said. "If there's real evidence of wrongdoing under the law of armed conflict or the rules of engagement, then both the military and society must act on it. That's how you keep the trust alive."However, Spencer also cautioned that some legal efforts risk becoming what soldiers see as politically motivated "witch hunts.""I've seen too many human rights lawyers blur the line between basic human rights and the actual law of armed conflict," Spencer observed. "They don't always understand the application of the use of force in context or the split-second chaos of combat. When that turns into what troops call witch hunts, it eats away at morale and readiness."He concluded that governments must both investigate valid claims and shield personnel from agenda-driven attacks."It's also the duty of the government to shield the military from agenda-driven witch hunts," he said. "A rigorous military justice system and honest self-policing are essential for an ethical force. Without them, the profession loses the very trust that lets it do its job."A spokesperson for Britain’s Ministry of Defense told Digital that, "While it is a long-standing policy of successive governments to not comment on U.K. Special Forces, we are immensely proud of all our Armed Forces and their extraordinary contribution to keeping the U.K. safe at home and abroad.""We are committed to ensuring that the legal framework governing our Armed Forces reflects the practical realities of military operations — and that those who served with honor are properly protected," the spokesperson added. "Where the U.K. undertakes military action, it complies fully with U.K. and international law. We are clear that upholding those standards does not prevent our Armed Forces from conducting effective operations."In a late 2025 open letter to Starmer, former military commanders warned that troops increasingly feel they must worry about "not only the enemy in front of them but the lawyer behind them.""Make no mistake," the retired generals cautioned, "our closest allies are watching uneasily, and our enemies will be rubbing their hands." Chinese Anti – Gambling Campaigns Lead to Police Raid on Cemetery and Arrest of Octogenarian
(AsiaGameHub) - Law enforcement authorities in Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese provinces are intensifying crackdowns on unlawful gambling activities in public spaces, with dozens of people taken into custody via a series of targeted raids. According to reports from Chinese media outlet China.com, Hong Kong police launched an operation on April 16 to dismantle an illegal street gambling syndicate operating in Kwai Chung. Police confirmed four Hong Kong residents were arrested at the scene. All suspects are male, ranging in age from 68 at the youngest to 82 at the oldest. Investigators stated they seized gambling equipment and an unrevealed sum of cash during the operation. Cases of all the arrested individuals will be heard jointly at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on April 30. A residential housing complex in Kwai Chung, Hong Kong. (Image: WiNG [CC BY-SA 3.0]) Gambling Crackdown Efforts Across China Separately, in Hangzhou province, the provincial Public Security Bureau reported that police in Xindeng utilized drone technology to identify and arrest a group of people suspected of gambling at a hillside pavilion inside a public cemetery. Police said they took 13 people into custody and confiscated 10,000 yuan (nearly $1,470) worth of gambling proceeds. Officers also seized assorted gambling equipment at the site. Detectives noted the suspects selected the spot because it was isolated and hard to access. But after police spotted a suspicious group of people gathering at the pavilion on April 14, they deployed a drone. Five minutes later, officers said, the drone transmitted "clear footage of several people assembled in the pavilion placing wagers." Officers confirmed they have charged all suspects with gambling-related offenses, adding that the investigation is still ongoing. Rising Occurrence of Forest Gambling Police across China say they are cracking down on a sharp increase in the so-called "forest gambling" activity. This form of gambling usually involves groups of bettors arranging to meet in remote, mostly rural locations. The gamblers reportedly believe unlawful gambling is low-risk if conducted in areas that police do not regularly patrol. But Chinese police note they now have access to a wide range of drone-powered technologies that help them search for groups of gamblers in woodland areas, abandoned structures, lakeside resorts and mountainous zones. Some police agencies have also dispatched small teams of officers to carry out daily outdoor foot patrols in remote and semi-rural areas. These patrols typically monitor activities in narrow small village alleys and deep forested areas to curb the growth of "forest gambling" rings. This article is provided by a third-party. 68 Arrested by South Korean Police in Dogfighting and Gambling Ring Bust
(AsiaGameHub) - Authorities in Daegu, South Korea, have taken 68 individuals into custody following a raid on an alleged dogfighting and gambling venue. According to reports from South Korean broadcasters TV Chosun and TBC, officers stated that a large number of those arrested were apprehended while betting on animal fights. The location for the fights was an empty plot within an industrial complex on the city's outskirts, as confirmed by police and members of the animal rights organization Korean Animal Welfare Association. Police believe the contests occurred inside a "3-meter by 3-meter iron cage," where onlookers observed from camping chairs. According to activists, "fighting dogs used for gambling purposes" were found concealed "in the bushes" close to the site. Police located additional animals "chained to the guardrails on nearby roads." Investigators revealed that gamblers placed bets amounting to "tens of millions of Korean won" on the results of the illicit matches. As the police operation commenced, the majority of the suspected gamblers attempted to escape. However, detectives reported that most fled directly into police netting that had been set up to seal the industrial complex's single entrance. Dogfighting & Gambling: Police Charge 68 People A representative from the animal welfare charity described the scene: “People were gathering near the entrance to escape, vehicles were swarming in, and car horns were blaring. It was absolute chaos.” A dog rescued from a suspected dogfighting ring near Daegu in South Korea. (Image: Korean Animal Welfare Association/Screenshot) Officers reported that numerous dogs discovered at the location had suffered severe injuries. A number of the animals are now undergoing care at veterinary clinics. Activists noted that one dog was found in a "horrific condition." The animal was said to have broken teeth and a deeply gashed leg from a particularly violent fight. The suspects face charges including animal abuse violations and illegal gambling. Authorities have announced they are widening their probe to target the suspected organizers of the gambling operation. At the scene, investigators also uncovered syringes and various illegal drugs that had been administered to the injured dogs. Punishments are Too Lenient, Say Critics Under South Korean law, the maximum sentence for injuring an animal for gambling purposes is two years imprisonment. Fines of up to 20 million won (under $14,000) can also be imposed by the courts. Critics, however, argue that these penalties are excessively "lenient." Towards the end of last year, animal rights activists in the southern region of the country raised alarms that dogfighting rings were growing "rampant." These activists claim that efforts by courts and police to curb illegal dogfighting are "lax," which has led to a "resurgence" of the activity and linked gambling in regions such as South Gyeongsang Province.
