(SeaPRwire) – One overarching question looms over every post-apocalyptic narrative: the cataclysm itself. Some stories open with the apocalypse unfolding in the premiere before jumping forward to the distant future, such as The Last of Us or Fallout. Others withhold the full truth of the disaster until a pivotal scene, like Paradise, while some never address the event whatsoever, as seen in Twisted Metal.
Yet Apple TV’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama Silo is taking an entirely fresh approach. Set to premiere in July, Season 3 will split its narrative between the post-apocalyptic present day—where Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) returns to her home silo after being exiled following a “cleaning” assignment—and the pre-apocalyptic past, where politicians work to prepare for the impending catastrophe. These expanded flashbacks didn’t come out of thin air. The closing moments of Season 2 cut to a near-future scene in Washington, D.C., where a congressman met with a journalist to discuss the recent tragic events. He handed her a gift: a duck-shaped Pez dispenser. He downplayed it as an item he impulsively picked up at a corner store, but for Silo fans, this seemingly trivial prop is a critical link to the show’s core plot. Hundreds of years later, this Pez dispenser remains as a preserved relic from “The Before Times.”
Weaving in the series’ origin story is a creative choice directly adapted from the source material. Hugh Howey’s second installment in the Silo book trilogy, Shift, doesn’t introduce Juliette until its final pages, instead centering on events that don’t feature her, paired with intercut flashbacks. But when a lead actor as talented as Rebecca Ferguson is part of the cast, it makes sense to highlight her character—so much of Season 2 focused on her arc in a nearby silo. It appears Season 3 will now revisit the flashback sequences from Shift while continuing Juliette’s storyline.

These flashbacks add a one-of-a-kind layer of intrigue for Silo viewers. Audience members have heard references to the Before Times before, but no one living inside the silo has any actual memory of the event that forced humanity to seek shelter underground. This means the story won’t hinge on characters knowing information the audience doesn’t; instead, viewers will experience dramatic irony, as we already understand exactly what transpired. Hopefully, we’ll get to watch Juliette and the other silo inhabitants piece this truth together themselves.
Silo has a clear, structured roadmap for its run, as it was already renewed for a fourth and final season. That means every plot beat we see in Season 3—including the pre-apocalyptic flashback storyline—marks the start of the series’ final act. Silo has consistently delivered unforgettable, epic season finales, and with this extended run and an even larger narrative scope than prior seasons, it’s almost certain the show is building toward a landmark series finale.
