(SeaPRwire) –   A Russian gunman was shot dead by Ukrainian special forces on Saturday after opening fire at a supermarket in Kyiv, leaving six people dead and 14 injured, among them a 12‑year‑old boy.

Per Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the 58-year-old assailant was born in Moscow and had resided in the Donetsk region for many years.

Zelenskyy stated that the gunman took no fewer than four hostages, killed one of them, and fatally shot four other people on the street. An additional woman later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at a hospital.

Graphic footage recorded by onlookers showed the shooter firing at a victim at close range on the street. Other bodies were spotted lying on the pavement and in residential courtyards.

Ukrainian special forces raided the convenience store after 40 minutes of failed negotiation attempts, according to Klymenko.

At least 14 people sustained wounds in the attack, though officials cautioned that the tally may climb as more people come forward to seek medical care.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, a 12‑year‑old boy and a supermarket security guard are counted among the injured.

Zelenskyy noted that the shooter also set an apartment on fire before launching the attack, though it remains unclear if anyone was hurt as a result of the arson.

“My condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” Zelenskyy posted on X. “…We wish all the wounded a swift recovery.”

Per official accounts, the gunman had previously been prosecuted for criminal offenses, but held a valid firearms permit. Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are conducting a probe into the incident.

Ukraine’s security service has classified the attack as a terrorist act.

“All available information about him and the motives behind his actions is being thoroughly investigated,” Zelenskyy stated. “Every detail must be verified.”

Hanna Kulyk, a 75-year-old neighbor of the shooter, described him as an “educated, refined man” who lived alone and rarely socialized with others.

“You’d never guess he was some kind of criminal,” Kulyk told The Associated Press.
