Canadian teenager charged with arson for setting fire to U.S. baseball team’s charter bus

(SeaPRwire) –   A Canadian teen is facing arson charges after authorities allege she set fire to a charter bus owned by an American professional baseball team during the team’s road trip to Winnipeg, Canada.

The Kane County Cougars, an independent U.S.-based professional baseball team, were traveling in Canada to play games against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

On May 21, law enforcement agencies responded to the team’s bus—engulfed in flames outside Blue Cross Park—per the Winnipeg Police Service.

Authorities determined the fire was intentionally set. Two teenagers were initially taken into custody, and a 15-year-old girl has since been charged with arson causing property damage and possession of incendiary material.

Police said the teen was later released into the care of a responsible adult.

“The entire bus and its contents were destroyed,” the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a release.

“We are deeply disappointed this incident happened to our family-owned company, and losing this vehicle will impact our business operations,” Windstar operations manager Jackson Greteman told CBC Lite.

“We’re relieved no one was hurt in this reckless act of vandalism and are cooperating with local authorities,” he added.

Greteman noted the damage to the 56-seat bus and destroyed equipment is estimated at roughly $425,000.

Authorities have not publicly addressed a possible motive as the investigation remains ongoing.
