They rarely discussed the possibility that a single calving event could kill hundreds within hours. Wednesday’s mudslides and flash flooding along the Nepal-China border shattered that assumption. A large chunk of ice broke off a glacier and plunged into the Lhende Khola River. The resulting surge turned a relatively narrow river into a destructive force of unusual velocity. Roads collapsed. Communications networks went dark. Up to 100 workers in a hydropower plant tunnel remain trapped in mud. The death toll now stands at at least 676. Nearly 3,000 people are missing.
