The First True Open-World RPG Based on ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Is on the Way

Warner Bros. Pictures(SeaPRwire) - Seventy-two years since its publication, The Lord of the Rings has left an indelible mark on pop culture. Nearly every popular fantasy work—from A Song of Ice and Fire to The Wheel of Time—has drawn immeasurable inspiration from Tolkien’s 1954 masterpiece, and its take on the Hero’s Journey has paved the way for countless storytellers, both within and outside the high fantasy genre. With an estimated 150 million copies sold, it’s easily one of the most widely read books of all time.Naturally, many people’s first encounter with The Lord of the Rings doesn’t come from the page. There were animated films in 1978 and 1980, Peter Jackson’s wildly successful trilogy, several Middle-Earth themed concept albums, and characters from the franchise even recently appeared in a Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond expansion. LotR has also been explored in a wide range of video games, and while most build off the canon of Jackson’s trilogy, a recently announced project could let fans explore Middle-Earth in a completely new way.Peter Jackson’s three-film adaptation remains the benchmark for most video games set in Middle-Earth. | Warner Bros. PicturesWarhorse Studios, the Czech video game developer behind the highly acclaimed Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, has announced they’re working on a Lord of the Rings game alongside the third KC:D installment. Details are extremely scarce, but the game was described as an open-world RPG—similar to their flagship original franchise. The announcement carries a touch of irony: Daniel Vávra, the former director of the KC:D games, stepped down to develop a movie based on the series just months before Warhorse revealed it would be making a game based on what’s arguably the greatest fantasy adaptation in history. The most recent LotR-based game was last year’s Tales of the Shire, a charming lifestyle simulator set between the events of The Hobbit and Fellowship, but no modern franchise game has come close to the success of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor or its sequel. Both titles were action-adventures notable for their Nemesis System, which created personal interactions between players and enemies by having AI foes remember and learn from past combat encounters. Given the immense success of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, Warhorse’s LotR game might give the Shadow games a run for their money.Shadow of Mordor gave fans a taste of open-world LotR antics, but Warhorse’s game could take it even further. | Warner Bros. InteractiveWhile plot details are still under wraps, it’s exciting to imagine how Warhorse will approach Middle-Earth. The game could be set during the events of The Lord of the Rings, but considering the vast amount of supplemental material written by J.R.R. Tolkien and his son Christopher, it could just as easily take place elsewhere in Tolkien’s universe’s history—similar to The Rings of Power. We likely won’t get significant updates on the project for some time, but the announcement alone is enough to spark giddy excitement in fans who’ve long awaited the chance to explore Tolkien’s world with the hands-on immersion only an RPG can provide. This Year’s Wildest True-Crime Documentary Is Now Available Digitally

White Lake Productions/Bright Sun Films(SeaPRwire) - Occasionally, viral phenomena serve as gateways to obscure subcultures you were previously unaware of but suddenly feel compelled to understand. Do you recall the 2014 chlorine gas incident at Midwest FurFest? The unsettling nature of the DashCon ball pit? Or the incident involving a $400,000 animatronic that vanished from the Disney black market, triggering a criminal inquiry and a multitude of YouTube videos fixated on the character's location? If your immediate reaction is, “wait, did you just say Disney black market?,” then Stolen Kingdom deserves a spot on your weekend viewing agenda. This documentary, co-produced by the renowned YouTube channel Bright Sun Films, marks the directorial debut of Joshua Bailey. He spent years establishing relationships within both the Disney collector and urban-explorer circles prior to commencing work on Stolen Kingdom in 2021. The scene of the crime. | White Lake Productions/Bright Sun FilmsThe film is a hybrid of true crime and a deep exploration of subculture. It utilizes the narrative of Buzzy, a cherished animatronic from Disney World's defunct EPCOT attraction Cranium Command, as a springboard to examine the typically inaccessible realms of urban explorers—essentially, individuals who infiltrate abandoned structures to document their discoveries—and adult Disney aficionados. The intersection between these groups is more significant than one might assume, leading Bailey (and consequently, the audience) into the peculiar universe of Disney-related offenses. The situation escalated in 2018 when Buzzy's headphones, hat, and jacket disappeared, followed shortly by the animatronic himself. Weighing approximately 300 pounds, the animatronic is far more difficult to steal than a poster or a garment. Although Buzzy's accessories were eventually recovered—they had been acquired for $8,000 by NBA player Robin Lopez, who was ignorant of their stolen status—the animatronic itself remains missing. It was presumably sold to a private collector who cannot publicly acknowledge ownership. ‘90s camcorder warriors “Hoot” and “Chief” backstage at Disney World. | White Lake Productions/Bright Sun FilmsThis is a surreal narrative that could only emerge from the hyper-specific fan communities thriving on the internet. However, the most intriguing element of Stolen Kingdom is the cast of characters: Given Disney's family-friendly image, its fandom seems an unlikely gathering place for criminals. Most of Bailey's interviewees do not fit this stereotype. They appear as enthusiastic, obsessive individuals—nerds, essentially—whose drive to explore abandoned attractions stems from a profound adoration for the parks. Then there is Patrick Spikes, also known as BackDoorDisney.Spikes' involvement is what renders Stolen Kingdom a truly captivating experience: Even after accepting a plea deal for burglary and grand theft charges, Spikes—a former park employee who essentially constituted the Disney black market until his arrest in 2019—remains entirely unrepentant. He discusses stealing park memorabilia and selling it online with disarming candor. (He even teasingly informs Bailey that he knows Buzzy's whereabouts but withholds the specifics.) He appears eager to be perceived as tough, yet possesses the innocence and awe characteristic of a dedicated Disney adult. He is a compelling figure. In keeping with its eccentric subjects, Stolen Kingdom is pursuing a somewhat unconventional distribution strategy: This includes a national roadshow tour that launches in Los Angeles on May 21 before making its way back to Florida in mid-June.Stolen Kingdom is now available for digital rental via Letterboxd’s new Video Store feature. After 29 Years, The Grand Theft Auto Series Remains a Beloved Gaming Franchise Business

After 29 Years, The Grand Theft Auto Series Remains a Beloved Gaming Franchise

Rockstar Games(SeaPRwire) - Few video games have achieved both widespread influence and massive commercial success quite like the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Ever since the original 1997 entry debuted, its signature brand of highly controversial, unhinged criminal thrills has captivated gamers across the globe, spawning a franchise that now includes five core mainline games plus several standalone titles and expansions. In less than two decades, the series became one of the most profitable in gaming history, with its most recent release, Grand Theft Auto 5, ranking as the second-best-selling video game of all time.Thirteen years after the launch of that last mainline installment, Rockstar Games is finally ready to follow up the previous game and its widespread critical acclaim with Grand Theft Auto 6, a sequel that has quickly emerged as one of the most highly anticipated video game releases of the 2020s. First officially announced in 2022, with its debut trailer dropping in 2023 — a full decade after GTA 5 hit shelves — this title is not only long-awaited by fans, but also rumored to be the most expensive video game ever produced, with estimates placing its development budget at roughly $1 to $2 billion. At that price tag, GTA 6 reads as the gaming equivalent of a major Hollywood blockbuster, but this throughline has been part of the franchise from its very start: the beloved series has always aimed to pay homage to Hollywood and its most iconic films. One of the most recognizable ways the Grand Theft Auto games have channeled classic cinematic storytelling is through their voice acting. The first two entries relied solely on text-based dialogue, with voices limited to background city ambient noise, but GTA 3 moved the franchise into 3D and also brought on major Hollywood talent: Frank Vincent lent his voice to Mafia boss Salvatore Leone, Joe Pantoliano portrayed Liberty City pimp Luigi Goterelli, and Kyle MacLachlan voiced corrupt construction tycoon and multi-billionaire Donald Love. The list of A-list movie stars contributing to the series has only grown since then: Vice City cast Ray Liotta and Burt Reynolds, while San Andreas added Samuel L. Jackson and Ice-T for prominent roles. It’s equally clear that the games have drawn significant inspiration from iconic films and television series, most within the crime-thriller genre. In a 2001 official PlayStation magazine feature, Rockstar Games’ developers cited several cinematic influences: The Warriors for its diverse, eclectic lineup of street gangs, Taxi Driver for its gritty, decaying depiction of New York City, Scarface for its focus on a protagonist’s rise through a corrupt criminal underworld, plus Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. The series has continued to wear its influences proudly ever since: Vice City blended the nuanced take on criminal morality from Carlito’s Way with the neon-soaked visual style of Miami Vice, San Andreas drew from the raw urban storytelling of Boyz in the Hood and Menace 2 Society (among other similar works), and the franchise’s core identity owes a huge debt to crime epics like Michael Mann’s Heat and The Sopranos.Virtually every crime epic you can name has served as inspiration for a GTA entry at one point or another. | Rockstar GamesWhile it’s far harder to identify films that are explicitly inspired by the Grand Theft Auto series, there are plenty of movies that feel like they pulled inspiration from this long-running virtual crime saga: Baby Driver’s music-driven heist sequences unintentionally evoke the feeling of fleeing police while tuning into GTA’s various in-game radio stations, and it’s almost a given that the early Fast and the Furious films could easily be retconned to take place within the setting of Vice City or San Andreas. Over the past two decades, the broader video game industry has made a deliberate push to become increasingly cinematic, and GTA has been at the forefront of that movement for years — this trend is all but certain to continue when Grand Theft Auto 6 finally launches.Grand Theft Auto 6 will release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Exclusive: Dan Harmon Offers an Exciting Update on the ‘Rick and Morty’ and ‘Community’ Movies

Adult Swim(SeaPRwire) - Dan Harmon is among the most celebrated television creators of his generation, largely due to series such as Community and Rick and Morty. He has also worked as a podcaster, author, and producer, and is now preparing to step into a fresh role: filmmaker. For years, enthusiasts have eagerly demanded a Community film, motivated by the show's own benchmark for success: "six seasons and a movie." Now, Harmon is including a Rick and Morty movie on his agenda. Per a report from Deadline, Warner Bros. is in the preliminary stages of developing a Rick and Morty feature film, with Jacob Hair in negotiations to direct. Hair is a veteran director on Rick and Morty and has an extensive background as a storyboard artist for series like Family Guy, American Dad, and King of the Hill. However, with this new film project underway, what implications does it have for the Community movie? Inverse contacted Harmon for a status report on both endeavors.Dan Harmon reassures viewers that the Rick and Morty movie isn’t taking the place of the Community movie. | Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images“Both are in the works,” Harmon informed Inverse. “And neither is at the expense of the other. Two things can be true.” Therefore, Greendale Human Beings can be confident that although Harmon's more recent creation is also slated for a feature film, it will not replace the Community movie. Talk of the latter has circulated since the series concluded with its sixth season in 2015, and gradually, details about the follow-up have emerged. In February 2024, some narrative specifics were revealed when star Donald Glover shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s a college reunion, but Abed (Danny Pudi) is like this big director now, and basically this is his magnum opus.” The Community movie script is finished, so hopefully we’ll see it soon. | NBCThe Rick and Morty movie is merely in its early phases, whereas the script for the Community movie is complete. This indicates the major work for Dan Harmon on that project is finished, freeing him to concentrate on writing a unique Rick and Morty adventure. While the Community movie will function as a reunion special, the Rick and Morty film appears set to be an expansive intergalactic epic. So, whether you're longing for another paintball battle or simply wish to view Rick on a larger screen, Harmon has you covered. Rick and Morty Season 9 is set to debut May 24 at 11:00 pm ET/PT on Adult Swim. New installments will begin streaming weekly on HBO Max and Hulu starting June 15. A Star Wars Film That Was Cancelled Could Have Changed The Force Completely Business

A Star Wars Film That Was Cancelled Could Have Changed The Force Completely

Lucasfilm(SeaPRwire) - One major side effect of Lucasfilm ordering up so many different Star Wars projects is that there are now dozens of canceled Star Wars projects that never saw the light of day. Six years ago, the studio announced a Rogue Squadron movie directed by Patty Jenkins, only for the project to be pushed aside indefinitely. Rangers of the New Republic was originally planned as a spinoff of The Mandalorian, but that effort fell apart as well. At one point, the lead showrunners of Game of Thrones were developing an entire Star Wars trilogy, but that project was also shelved after the Thrones series finale left most viewers underwhelmed. Some of these canceled projects are probably better off that way, but it is always fascinating to find out what could have been made. Today, we finally have new details about one of the most anticipated unmade Star Wars movies: the project from Lost co-creator and Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof.Damon Lindelof developed a Star Wars movie before it was scrapped. | Unique Nicole/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty ImagesDuring a guest appearance on The Ringer-Verse podcast, Lindelof opened up about the story he worked on during the two-year period when Lucasfilm hired him to develop a new Star Wars feature. “Just to talk about the banana in the room: I was fired from a Star Wars movie,” Lindelof said. “They asked me, ‘What do you think a Star Wars movie should be?’ And I told them my vision, and they said, ‘Great, you're hired.’ And then two years later, I was fired.” According to Lindelof, the movie would still have centered on Rey, Finn, and Poe, but it would have completely reframed the Light and Dark Sides of the Force. “There is a force of nostalgia, and there is a force of revision, and they are at odds with one another,” he said. “Let's do the Protestant Reformation inside Star Wars.” Lindelof’s movie would have reflected Star Wars’ obsession with nostalgia. | LucasfilmThis would have been a major shift for one of the franchise’s most iconic core elements, and this new framing feels especially interesting when considered through the lens of the Star Wars fandom itself. Many fans have pointed out that most modern Star Wars content is driven by nostalgia, while a smaller number of projects work to introduce and popularize brand new characters. For example, the entire series Obi-Wan Kenobi built up to another lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan and Vader, while The Mandalorian has worked to expand the official canon with all-new characters and storylines.Lindelof also shared that the strict boundaries of existing Star Wars canon made the entire writing process much more difficult than expected. “The writing was really hard, it was slow,” he said. “Like, nailing the tone, figuring out where it fit into the existing canon, what its relationship was to Episode 9. Was it launching a new trilogy? Was it supposed to be all of these different things?”We may never get to see Lindelof’s original vision play out on the big screen, but he still got his core message across. The Star Wars franchise is pulled between its past and its future, and while nostalgia will always be a core part of the fandom, the series cannot afford to dwell in the past forever. Apple TV’s Latest Paranoid Thriller Is a Manic Journey for the OnlyFans Age Business

Apple TV’s Latest Paranoid Thriller Is a Manic Journey for the OnlyFans Age

Apple TV(SeaPRwire) - It is truly impossible — nearly quixotic — to avoid thinking of Orphan Black whenever Tatiana Maslany leads a television series. The Canadian actress gave a legendary masterclass in that landmark BBC show, playing dozens of nearly identical, yet emotionally unique clones in a way that looked completely effortless. That career-defining powerhouse performance cannot be replicated, even as Maslany commits to elevating every role she accepts. So it is unfair to go into something like She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and expect that same level of sharp skill. After all, lightning rarely strikes twice! That being said, we get incredibly close to that level of greatness with Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. This Apple TV+ crime thriller shares plenty of DNA with Orphan Black, if only because — unlike most projects that have launched in the years since that series ended — it understands exactly how to use Maslany’s talent. It also helps that, outside of a few small details, the show follows a similar narrative arc to the story that made Maslany a star. Maslany once again plays a troubled single mother who witnesses a brutal killing and falls down a rabbit hole of conspiracy and exploitation. This time, however, the death she gets tangled up in is not that of her clone, but that of a cam-boy who has been scamming her for months.Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed nails one core choice by casting Maslany as Paula, an ordinary woman hiding so many secrets that she might as well be playing multiple matching characters all over again. Fresh off a divorce, fighting for custody of her daughter, and begging for a raise at her job, Paula has no shortage of private matters to keep compartmentalized. Her ex-husband Karl is arguably Jake Johnson at his most villainous: he did not just leave Paula for his more polished coworker Mallory (Jessy Hodges), he is also doing everything in his power to steal custody of Hazel from Paula. When he is not constantly berating her for her “erratic” life choices (a nod to a dark, mysterious incident in her past), Paula is dealing with similar disrespect working as a fact-checker for a newspaper.Showrunner David Rosen piles these daily indignities on thick, pulling inspiration from other unsettling high-tension thrillers like If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. Paula’s life is almost comically cruel: her nightly sessions with a cam-boy named Trevor (Brandon Flynn) are her only source of comfort, until Trevor is beaten and abducted mid-session. When Paula calls the police, they tell her she is likely experiencing the second stage of a sophisticated scam, and that Trevor will contact her soon begging for ransom. That call does eventually come, and it does not take long for his desperate pleas to turn harsh and predatory. If she does not hand over $15,000, he will release the private footage he has been secretly recording. He will share it with her family, send it to her boss, and destroy her life just as she starts to rebuild it.Dark cyber thrills collide with a buzzy murder mystery in Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. | Apple TVWhat makes Paula such a great lead is that she is fully capable on her own (again, she’s a fact-checker!) and refuses to cave to these demands. Maximum Pleasure’s best moments come via frenetic montages, scored to a thumping synth soundtrack and edited for the TikTok-trained brain, where Paula uses the internet to investigate Trevor and eventually defend herself against the ring of scammers targeting her. Her investigative work boils down to, essentially, a deep Google search, but that makes perfect sense for a woman with barely any resources. This is a cyber thriller that knows its own limits, and how to naturally work in Apple products. Frantic text chains and grainy video recordings deliver plot details and crank up the tension, but Rosen is smart to balance those digital thrills with grounded, human-led mystery as well. When Paula manages to track down Trevor’s apartment, she is shocked to find his lifeless body in his bathtub. A killer is on the loose — could it be another upset scam victim seeking revenge? — but Paula inevitably becomes the top suspect in the case. This makes for compelling drama, but it also plays into Maximum Pleasure’s most frustrating habit: its need to constantly keep Paula at a disadvantage. The series reminds viewers that it is Paula against the world at every turn, and it does this by filling that world with supporting characters that range from slightly to extremely unbearable. Karl and Mallory are constantly getting in Paula’s way with passive-aggressive fake gestures of goodwill. Paula’s aggressively unfunny coworkers (Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg and Charlie Hall) waste plenty of time sniping about Paula’s messy life before eventually getting dragged into the conspiracy themselves. Even the detective who first comforted her after she reported the scam (a fantastic performance from Dolly de Leon) ends up antagonizing Paula.Maximum Pleasure’s supporting cast is a mixed bag, but Dolly de Leon is the perfect match for Maslany. | Apple TVAs a tactic to get audiences rooting for Paula, it works... it just is not subtle at all. It can make Maximum Pleasure a frustrating watch; without Maslany, it would not be half as effective. Luckily, the series knows when to let Maslany lead and when to push Paula completely off balance. If nothing else, you will want to keep watching — not just to enjoy another masterful performance from the actress, but to see Paula untangle this wild, twisted plot.Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed premieres May 20 on Apple TV+. A Decade Later, The Century’s Most Subtly Influential Cult Classic Remains Unmatched

Misty Mountains/Bloom/Silver/Kobal/Shutterstock(SeaPRwire) - A "cult classic" is a term used to describe a piece of media that boasts a passionate fanbase despite lacking mainstream success. Depending on who you ask, cult films can range from transgressive or gory genre movies to major studio financial flops. Regardless of their style or story, what unites these projects is their ability to resonate with a specific niche audience. This connection inspires loyal followers to champion their brilliance until they eventually receive the acclaim they deserve, often years later. The Nice Guys failed to make a splash at the box office in 2016, earning an estimated $62 million by the end of its theatrical run against a $50 million budget. This poor commercial performance is largely attributed to its release the same weekend as the Angry Birds movie. In the decade since, both critics and fans have lamented the missed opportunity for sequels that this action-comedy might have spawned had it received more attention. To this day, the cast and crew are still frequently asked about the possibility of a follow-up in interviews. The film's title characters are played by stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, who portray enforcer Jackson Healy and private investigator Holland March, respectively. Set in 1977 Los Angeles, this unlikely duo teams up when an investigation into the death of an adult film actress overlaps with the disappearance of a teenage girl named Amelia (Margaret Qualley). As the two attempt to locate Amelia, they find themselves involved in cartoonish hijinks while uncovering a deeper conspiracy. It is easy to understand why the film's devoted supporters feel so defensive. Its unique blend of noir parody and slapstick comedy is a signature style of writer-director Shane Black. Previous films like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang had established him as a skilled creator of sleazy mysteries filled with witty banter, and Crowe and Gosling fully realize his vision here with their captivating performances. Healy plays the seasoned but cynical veteran opposite March, who is energetic but hapless. Bonded by their shared history of failed marriages and struggles with alcoholism, their rapport resembles that of a bickering married couple. This dynamic is reinforced by their co-parenting of March's daughter, Holly (Angourie Rice), who insists on tagging along for the investigation despite their objections. For many, the most unforgettable aspect of the film is Ryan Gosling's performance as Holland March, which showcases his talent for both verbal and physical comedy. He seems naturally suited to being battered around and tumbling down hills, and March's dialogue is packed with memorable one-liners. This role helped cement Gosling's reputation as a significant comic actor, a persona he has continued to embrace.Perhaps we will never get a Nice Guys sequel. And perhaps that is acceptable. | Misty Mountains/Bloom/Silver/Kobal/ShutterstockThe fact that this charming film never received a sequel continues to be a source of disappointment for many, a feeling exacerbated by the current state of the film industry. The modern obsession cinephiles have with box office numbers and franchising is understandable. Hollywood is currently navigating a period of significant uncertainty, still recovering from strikes and shutdowns while massive mergers threaten to disrupt any remaining stability. In this economic climate, studios prefer the financial safety of established intellectual property, leading fans to anxiously track box office projections. When an auteur's film has a poor opening weekend, it often feels like the final nail in the coffin for studio funding of similar original projects. However, this mindset has constrained our imagination. We now idealize a world where "good" movies are transformed into franchises instead of "bad" ones, hoping this might prevent cinema from becoming mediocre. The thought—"if only we lived in a timeline where The Nice Guys had three movies instead of Angry Birds"—is alluring but ultimately naive. The reality is that this obsession with expanding franchises is what makes films vulnerable to mediocrity in the first place; it forces artists to cater to what has come before and bear the burden of associated expectations, both financial and creative. The Nice Guys continues to resonate in our culture a decade later, proving that it does not need a sequel to be significant. Its influence is evident in the comedic detective films that have been made since, such as Ethan Coen’s recent solo projects and the Knives Out series. Furthermore, we likely wouldn't have Ryan Gosling's recent comic characters without his performance here. There are clear parallels between his portrayal of Holland March and Project Hail Mary’s Dr. Ryland Grace, with both being self-centered experts who rise to the challenge. His performance as Ken in Barbie also echoes March in his total commitment to playing the clown. For those with the eyes to see, the spirit of the nice guys is everywhere. When an original story captures our excitement, our desires should not lean toward turning it into the next Marvel universe. While it would be entertaining to see this pair solve another case, the cult status and enduring impact of this film should fuel our appetite for more original stories to be made, rather than causing us to cling to nostalgia. Such a legacy is far more meaningful than any number of sequels it could have produced. The Nice Guys is currently available to rent on Prime Video and other digital platforms. When Does ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Take Place? Here’s What You Need to Know

Lucasfilm(SeaPRwire) - Lucasfilm is embarking on a significant venture with The Mandalorian and Grogu. This film, marking the first Star Wars movie in seven years, is a derivative of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, which was a cornerstone of the streamer's debut in 2019. Since then, the character known as “The Child,” or more popularly, “Baby Yoda,” has been officially named Grogu. He has undergone training in both Jedi and Mandalorian traditions. Grogu has also formally joined a clan alongside Din Djarin, the protagonist better recognized as “The Mandalorian.”However, what essential details should you be aware of regarding this new film? Whether you have eagerly anticipated Grogu's return or are encountering him for the first time, understanding the status quo at the conclusion of the series is paramount.Where Does The Mandalorian and Grogu Fit Within The Star Wars Timeline?Grogu is now a little Mandalorian, completely with his own adorable armor. | LucasfilmThe narrative of The Mandalorian (and its related series) is situated within the New Republic era, which unfolds after the events of Return of the Jedi. Although Emperor Palpatine has been vanquished (for the time being), this does not signify a return to normalcy. The New Republic is in a precarious state as a nascent governing body, with remnants of the Empire still dispersed across the galaxy. The Mandalorian and Grogu is specifically set after the conclusion of The Mandalorian Season 3, approximately five years following Return of the Jedi.At this juncture, Din Djarin has largely retired from his former profession as a bounty hunter and is living a tranquil existence with his adopted son, Grogu, who opted to forgo Jedi training in favor of embracing life as a Mandalorian foundling. He even sports a small set of Beskar armor to complement his status.Nevertheless, when the New Republic's Col. Ward — a new character portrayed by Sigourney Weaver — contacts Mando and Grogu for assistance, they will be compelled to undertake a significant mission for the sake of the galaxy as we know it.Sigourney Weaver’s Col. Ward recruits Mando and Grogu for a special mission. | LucasfilmTo be unequivocally clear, while Grogu possesses the ability to wield the Force (often for moving snacks), he is not, in fact, a Jedi. He has even received training from Luke Skywalker himself, but just as Luke followed in his father's footsteps to become a Jedi, Grogu is following in his new father's footsteps to become a Mandalorian.Should you feel overwhelmed by the volume of Star Wars content released since the premiere of The Mandalorian Season 1, rest assured: only the main series and a single episode of The Book of Boba Fett prominently feature this duo. However, even if you have not viewed a single episode, as long as you are familiar with these characters and their position within the broader Star Wars timeline, you will be adequately prepared. The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 22. Thankfully, his sacrifice wasn’t in vain: Sister Sage provokes Kimiko enough to unlock her nuclear blast powers—an ability to strip others of their superhuman traits replicated from Soldier Boy. Kimiko blasts Sage, completely robbing her of her enhanced intelligence, something Sage actually celebrates. The loss of Frenchie looms large over the series finale of The Boys. | Amazon Prime VideoWith the weapon in hand, they can plan an attack. Using White House blueprints from the Season 4 finale, the Boys sneak in. Unfortunately, Homelander anticipated their arrival, and a locked door nearly spells disaster—until President Ashley Barrett, finally following her conscience, frees them. The Deep tries to block their path to the Oval Office but is quickly defeated in a fight with Starlight (and a finishing move from aquatic creatures). Oh Father attempts to intervene, but his head is blown apart with an indestructible ball gag. Finally, it all comes down to the ultimate showdown: Homelander vs. Butcher (armed with his crowbar), Kimiko, and—joining at the last minute—Ryan, who fights his biological father. Kimiko struggles to activate her powers, but a vision of Frenchie from beyond the grave helps her, and she strips Homelander, Butcher, and Ryan of their superhuman abilities. Now mere mortals, Homelander is killed with a crowbar to the head. And the entire fight was broadcast live across the country. At first glance, it seems like the story is over, with surviving heroes relaxing with cigars and beer. But Butcher’s journey isn’t done. He tries to convince Ryan to start a new life with him, but Ryan reminds him that Homelander’s evil doesn’t make Butcher a good person. “I guess it’s just you and me, Terror,” Butcher says to his dog—only to be met with silence. His longtime pet has passed away, and overcome by the loss of his remaining family, Butcher snatches the Supe-targeting virus sample and heads out on a mission, which Hughie notices. The Boys’ final fight is actually between Butcher and Hughie. | Amazon Prime VideoAt Vought HQ, Hughie and Butcher clash over the trigger to release the virus, and Hughie takes drastic action by killing Butcher. It’s a devastating moment, but it finally closes the saga. The epilogue shows all surviving characters getting happy endings—except Ashley Barrett, who is unanimously impeached.Later, Hughie is offered a senior role at the Department of Supe Affairs but declines, preferring to run his A/V store with Annie, who is now heavily pregnant. Despite severe morning sickness, she still uses her powers for good, and before flying off, Hughie speaks to her baby bump, calling the unborn child “Robin”—the name of his late girlfriend who first drew him into this fight. This recap covers a lot, but the 63-minute episode had many loose ends to tie up. We might see these characters again in future projects, but for now, we can focus on the past decades as we gear up for the expansion of The Boys franchise. The Boys is now streaming on Prime Video. Lego Batman Game Honors Cinematic History of the Dark Knight Business

Lego Batman Game Honors Cinematic History of the Dark Knight

Warner Bros. Games(SeaPRwire) - Only a select group of fictional characters have achieved such enduring cinematic presence: Dracula, James Bond, and then Batman, a relatively newer addition to this exclusive club. The Dark Knight has, by our count, appeared in 11 live-action films, in addition to his numerous animated adventures, surpassing all his superhero counterparts. He is undoubtedly the most frequently adapted superhero from the "Big Two" comic publishers, and potentially the most recognizable American film character of all time. These films have explored a vast spectrum of tones and atmospheres, ranging from the heightened absurdity of Adam West’s cult-classic Batman: The Movie to the noir-infused serial killer mystery of The Batman. A significant part of Batman’s brilliance as a character lies in his flexible nature, a quality both the comics and films have consistently leveraged. Now, a new game celebrates this very aspect of the character, paying tribute to his extensive and celebrated history on the silver screen.Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight stands as the newest Lego game, as well as the most recent Batman video game released since Arkham Knight. Unlike previous Lego Batman titles, which featured original narratives, Legacy of the Dark Knight is an anthology that weaves together plotlines and key moments from every Batman film, creating a comprehensive homage to the character’s cinematic journeys. From engaging Nicholson’s Joker during the Keaton era to reliving Bruce Wayne’s training with the League of Shadows in Batman Begins, the game meticulously recreates some of the most iconic scenes from cinematic Batman lore. The game is not only crafted for devoted Batman enthusiasts but is also resonating positively with the wider gaming community. Steve Watts of GameSpot hailed it as “the most fun to be had with a Lego game since 2005,” while Bruno Galvão at Eurogamer declared it “not just one of the best Lego Batman games – it's one of the best Batman games and one of the best Lego games.”The most prominent point of praise across the majority of reviews for Legacy of the Dark Knight is the game’s faithful adherence to the on-screen Batman franchise, with Julián Ramirez of GamerFocus calling it “a love letter to Batman history.” The game doesn't merely draw from obvious live-action film references; it also incorporates elements from animated films, comic books (featuring characters like Sofia Falcone), and the beloved Arkham games. Gaming Boulevard noted that the game “brings the spirit of the Arkham games into the Lego universe,” specifically highlighting how its humor often playfully satirizes the Arkham universe’s grim, gritty portrayal of the character. It’d be a herculean effort in any other context, but the Lego Universe is the perfect place to combine two interpretations as different as Burton and Nolan’s. | Warner Bros. GamesWhile countless Batman films, numerous Batman games, and two specific Lego Batman games have been released, Legacy of the Dark Knight is the inaugural property to unite all of them into a passionate culmination of every single one of Batman’s multi-media appearances. This makes sense, considering that among the many properties Lego has adapted into games, Batman is arguably the most versatile across different mediums — unlike Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, and even Star Wars, which largely focus on the aesthetics and narratives of their cinematic versions. It truly underscores the Dark Knight's adaptability as a character that a single game can seamlessly integrate so many distinct interpretations of one heroic archetype, while respectfully honoring each. This is because very few comic book characters can boast the kind of success Batman has achieved outside of the medium in which he originated.Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. The Most Bizarre Thriller Of The Century Just Got A Major Enhancement

Sony Pictures Releasing(SeaPRwire) - A wounded curator flees through the Louvre while being hunted by an armed attacker. In his final moments, he arranges a trail of cryptic symbols, anagrams, and numbers near his body and hidden within artworks. When symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is named the prime suspect after his name surfaces among the clues, he and the victim’s granddaughter, cryptographer Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), race to uncover the true killer, clear Langdon’s name, and expose a vast conspiracy tied to the crime.Adapted from Dan Brown’s polarizing 2003 novel — one of America’s best-selling books of all time — The Da Vinci Code follows Robert and Sophie as they decode riddles, navigate false leads, and face betrayals from former allies. Closing in are law enforcement and a clandestine society determined to bury any evidence of a 2,000-year-old secret and the cover-up surrounding it. Their pursuit becomes a contemporary hunt for the Holy Grail, yet the cinematic MacGuffin here is not an artifact but a person: the alleged living descendant of Jesus Christ, born from his supposed secret union with Mary Magdalene. Curious? Confounded? With a new limited-edition 4K UHD Steelbook now available, there is no better moment to revisit The Da Vinci Code’s enigmas. How Was The Da Vinci Code Received Upon Its Initial Release?Backlash came swiftly, notably from the Catholic Church. The film’s provocative premise, bold speculation about Jesus’s life, and perceived critiques of the church led to bans in several countries, including Egypt, Syria, Iran, Lebanon, and Pakistan, and boycotts labeled “blasphemous” elsewhere, while India and Thailand required disclaimers identifying it as fiction.Reviews labeling The Da Vinci Code “a barely endurable enterprise,” “a deep-dyed disappointment,” and “a stodgy, grim thing” suggest a picture far duller than the controversy implied. At its Cannes Film Festival premiere two days before the general release, reactions ranged from indifferent shrugs to derisive laughter.Despite the critical panning, the film was a commercial triumph, earning $760 million worldwide against a $125 million budget. While it elevated director Ron Howard’s career — becoming his highest-grossing film and paving the way for two sequels, Angels & Demons (2009) and Inferno (2016) — at least one critic felt it left Catholicism’s appeal untouched. Anthony Lane argued the film’s “self-evident, spirit-lowering tripe could not [have] conceivably cause[d] a single member of the flock to turn aside from the faith.”No matter how charming Tom Hanks is. | Sony Pictures ReleasingWhy Is The Da Vinci Code Important to See Now?It is genuinely entertaining. The key to savoring this brisk thriller is to adopt the perspective Hanks himself recommended, noting that audiences were being overly earnest about a film ultimately “loaded with all sorts of hooey and fun…scavenger-hunt-type nonsense.” The Da Vinci Code is a high-stakes puzzle-solving contest, one in which Hanks’ protagonist urgently insists at a critical moment, “I need to get to a library!”Theological expositions are punctuated by shadowy secret societies, high-speed Parisian car pursuits, and an albino monk executing assassinations. For all its fleeting provocations about institutional cover-ups, religious atrocities, and convictions that justify killing to uphold faith, the film’s conspiracy elements offer a breezier, tangled web for an era wrestling with social media disinformation, heavily redacted files, and ceaseless political maneuvering.Watch out for evil monks. | Sony Pictures ReleasingWhat New Features Does The New 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Have?Issued by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for the film’s 20th anniversary, the three-disc limited-edition Steelbook contains both the 148-minute theatrical cut and the 174-minute extended cut in 4K with Dolby Vision, English Dolby Atmos, and English 5.1 audio. 57 Years After Its Debut, Scooby-Doo Is Getting an Anime Remake

Warner Bros.(SeaPRwire) - A successful animated franchise can gain worldwide recognition. Just as Monkey D. Luffy and Bluey are making waves in America, Simpsons merchandise is available across the globe. Japan even has a Snoopy museum. Similar to Spider-Verse variants, animated characters frequently adapt to new formats to attract fresh audiences—One Piece, for instance, saw a resurgence in popularity thanks to its live-action reboot. Now, one of the longest-running animated franchises is receiving a fresh global update, taking the form of an animated journey inspired by a novel artistic style. The first look at Tubi’s anime spinoff, Yokoso Scooby-Doo! | TubiPer Variety, Tubi— the free, ad-supported streaming platform—has secured the rights to Yokoso Scooby-Doo! (which translates to Welcome, Scooby-Doo!), the very first Scooby-Doo anime series. Additionally, the show will include voice work from Frank Welker and Matthew Lillard, both of whom appeared in the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film. Welker has been part of the franchise from its start, originally voicing Fred, while Lillard may be familiar to audiences from his recent roles in Daredevil: Born Again or Scream 7.Similar to numerous Scooby-Doo spinoffs, Yokoso Scooby-Doo! focuses solely on Shaggy and Scooby, with Fred, Daphne, and Velma nowhere to be seen. The series’ synopsis states: “During a trip to Japan for the ultimate culinary adventure, Scooby-Doo and Shaggy accidentally release hundreds of mythical creatures that are wreaking havoc throughout the nation. With assistance from Scooby’s uncle Daisuke-Doo, plus new companions—magical girl Yume and tech genius Takumi—the team sets off on a brand-new mystery packed with monster pursuits and playful mayhem.”Yes, Scooby has an uncle named Daisuke-Doo who lives in Japan. Given that he’s a Shiba Inu rather than a Great Dane, he’s likely an uncle by marriage.Matthew Lillard, who played Shaggy in the 2002 movie, reprises the role in Yokoso, Scooby-Doo! | Diyah Pera/Warner Bros/Kobal/ShutterstockThis joins a growing list of anime adaptations, a trend that’s particularly popular for Warner Bros. properties like Scooby-Doo. Both DC’s Suicide Squad and Dan Harmon’s Rick and Morty have received anime makeovers, so this news isn’t entirely unexpected. However, it is surprising that the series will stream on Tubi instead of HBO Max like other remakes. Overall, though, this is a positive: a Tubi release means it’ll be free to view, making it accessible to all North American audiences. (Cartoon Network will handle international distribution.)Although the series will feature some recognizable voices, its visual style will be completely new for the franchise. Combining Scooby-Doo’s signature mystery and humor with anime artistry and Japanese cultural elements is bound to result in one of the most intriguing animation crossovers to date.Yokoso Scooby-Doo! will stream on Tubi. Marvel Intensifies MCU Synergy Efforts Business

Marvel Intensifies MCU Synergy Efforts

Kristina Bumphrey/Variety/Getty Images(SeaPRwire) - Marvel stands as one of the largest entertainment franchises globally, encompassing films, television, theme parks, cruise lines, video games, and literature. Yet it all began with a single medium: comic books. Though Marvel Comics launched the journeys of these iconic characters, it has gradually taken a secondary role to the cinematic universe. While Marvel Comics operates largely within its own continuity and multiverse, it may soon share greater alignment with the MCU due to a leadership shift that brings a television executive into the comics division.Marvel TV has always had its roots in comics. | Marvel StudiosAs reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has revealed that Brad Winderbaum, currently serving as chief of television and animation, will soon assume an expanded role titled “head of Marvel television, animation, comics and franchise.” This new position will oversee both Marvel’s Disney+ streaming content and Marvel Comics. David Abdo, presently General Manager of Disney Music Group, will transition to Marvel Comics with the title “general manager, comics and franchise,” reporting directly to Winderbaum. This restructuring marks the departure of Dan Buckley, who has led Marvel Comics for many years. Buckley, a long-standing figure at Marvel, became publisher in 2003 and previously headed Marvel Entertainment. He was also a member of the now-disbanded Marvel Creative Committee, contributing creative input to MCU films ranging from Iron Man to Avengers: Age of Ultron.Winderbaum has been a producer at Marvel for over a decade now. | Imeh Akpanudosen/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty ImagesThe transition does not appear to be contentious, and Buckley will remain with the company through 2027 to facilitate a seamless handover. Nevertheless, fans have begun speculating about the implications for Marvel’s future. While the full impact remains uncertain, Winderbaum’s influence on Marvel Television suggests a potential increase in synergy between the comics and the MCU—particularly the streaming series.Several Marvel TV shows have drawn directly from comic book storylines or concepts, such as Hawkeye and What If. Under Winderbaum’s leadership, Marvel may publish more comics designed with future screen adaptations in mind. Alternatively, characters and narratives from television could find new life in comic book form. While fan reception to such cross-pollination may vary, Marvel has historically benefited from heightened interconnectivity across its storytelling platforms. 52 Years Later, an Iconic Sci-Fi Horror Monster Receives a Perfect Reboot Business

52 Years Later, an Iconic Sci-Fi Horror Monster Receives a Perfect Reboot

Hulton Archive/Moviepix/Getty Images(SeaPRwire) - If you’re willing to bend the definition a bit, Young Frankenstein counts as a reboot. It revisits its source material—specifically James Whale’s Universal monster films Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein, which are themselves loose adaptations of Mary Shelley’s novel—and reboots the story from scratch, but with one major twist: Mel Brooks’ take on this genre-defining sci-fi/horror classic is loaded with goofy wordplay and PG-level sexual humor. Assuming that’s true, then Very Young Frankenstein is a reboot of a reboot—a absurd concept that fits the comedic minds behind the series. Brooks has approved Very Young Frankenstein, a TV adaptation of his beloved 1974 comedy that’s been in the works for more than a year and just got a series order at FX, per a report from The Hollywood Reporter. FX is also the network behind What We Do in the Shadows, and the two shows share key creative talent: Taika Waititi, co-creator of WWDITS, has been tapped to direct the pilot for Very Young Frankenstein, which was penned by fellow WWDITS alum Stefani Robinson. Robinson wrote several iconic episodes of the vampire comedy (earning Emmy nominations for her work), including the season 2 standout “On the Run,” which introduced audiences to Jackie Daytona, a regular human bartender. In addition to that (extremely promising) creative team, Very Young Frankenstein has announced key cast members: Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, and Spencer House. Judging by their appearances and overall energy, Galifianakis is probably set to take on Gene Wilder’s Fraunk-un-shteen character, while Wells—who has bounced between dramatic and comedic roles throughout her career—will play a part similar to Teri Garr’s in the original movie. As for House? At 6’4” and with a broad build, the answer is pretty obvious. Kumail Nanjiani, Nikki Crawford, and Cary Elwes also appeared in the pilot, which was filmed last autumn after receiving a pilot order in September. FX has now greenlit a full season of chaos that layers 2020s sensibilities over 1970s takes on 1930s themes. It’ll be fascinating to see how Waititi and Robinson’s style—characterized on What We Do in the Shadows by its depth and playful nods to history and culture—mixes with Brooks’ slapstick jokes. (For the record, WWDITS had plenty of silly moments too.) But given the impressive resumes of everyone involved, the show will almost certainly be a laugh riot. That’s all the details we have so far, except for a comment from Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment: “Very Young Frankenstein draws from the beloved film while infusing the creative, unapologetic energy that’s made FX comedies stand out over the years, resulting in a totally unique interpretation of the classic tale.” Young Frankenstein isn’t currently streaming anywhere, but you can catch What We Do in the Shadows on Hulu. A New Kylo Ren Comic Will Explore the Character’s Final Chapter in Star Wars Business

A New Kylo Ren Comic Will Explore the Character’s Final Chapter in Star Wars

Lucasfilm(SeaPRwire) - Kylo Ren is returning to Marvel Comics once more.Ever since Star Wars revived the Skywalker Saga with the sequel trilogy, Kylo Ren—the saga’s central antagonist—has remained a figure shrouded in mystery. The films offered little insight into his past, creating a narrative void that multiple comic book arcs have since sought to fill. Although Kylo Ren became one with the Force at the end of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, Marvel Comics expanded on his backstory that same year with a four-issue miniseries titled The Rise of Kylo Ren. This was followed by Legacy of Vader, a longer companion series exploring Kylo’s journey after the events of The Last Jedi. Both series, written by Charles Soule, were widely praised—particularly amid strong fan support for a standalone Ben Solo film. While Kylo’s canonical story concluded with The Rise of Skywalker, Soule has reunited with The Rise artist Will Sliney to craft one final chapter centered on the character. A third—and possibly last—installment in Kylo’s comic arc is now on the horizon. After chronicling his ascent, the narrative now turns to his downfall, depicted in the newly announced The Fall of Kylo Ren, launching August 12.Kylo Ren is getting some closure in a new midquel comic. | Marvel ComicsLucasfilm unveiled the new series through IGN, offering a preview of its premise. The Fall of Kylo Ren picks up right after Kylo’s introspective trip to Mustafar in Legacy of Vader. Upon returning to First Order headquarters, he discovers that his second-in-command, General Hux (portrayed by Domhnall Gleeson in the films), and Hux’s own subordinate, General Pryde (played by Richard E. Grant), have seized control “with treacherous ambition.” With his sense of purpose now fully defined, Kylo moves to reassert authority over his fractured regime, restoring order through a blend of strength and intimidation.According to Sliney, Fall has been in development for quite some time. “Behind the scenes, we’ve been quietly discussing Fall for a very long time,” the artist told IGN. “Since Charles and I first collaborated on The Rise of Kylo Ren, we knew we were working on something special. I’ve never encountered a fanbase as passionately invested in a story as they were during Rise.”That enthusiasm has only intensified as Kylo’s saga continues. In a personal newsletter, Soule explained his goal of bridging the gap between the live-action films, giving Kylo a compelling arc as a tormented villain. “Legacy brought him clarity—and even moments of peace,” Soule wrote. “Fall completes the puzzle.”It’s a rare narrative opportunity, especially for a sequel-era character. Yet Kylo’s enduring popularity makes this fitting: while this may mark the end of his story, Fall could open the door for future tales to unfold within Marvel’s Star Wars universe. The Fall of Kylo Ren, from Marvel Comics, begins on August 12, 2026. Netflix Quietly Adds What May Be the Greatest Sci-Fi Western of the Century Business

Netflix Quietly Adds What May Be the Greatest Sci-Fi Western of the Century

Universal Pictures(SeaPRwire) - The sustained cultural dominance of superhero films, now spanning over two decades, can truly only be compared to one historical trend in Hollywood: the widespread popularity of the Western. This enduring genre, which occasionally receives a modern deconstructionist or revisionist interpretation (such as *Django Unchained* or *Logan*), reached its peak from the 1940s through the 1960s. The essence of the American Western is intrinsically linked to the principles that fueled Manifest Destiny a century earlier — the conviction that America was a predestined inheritance, and its untamed landscape had to be civilized into a home. Films like *The Searchers*, *Shane*, and *The Last Wagon* all portray the struggle to establish roots in America while confronting the wilderness, outlaws, and outdated portrayals of indigenous tribes as hostile savages. The American Western is fundamentally a collective nationalist narrative, a deliberate effort to transform the turbulent history of American settlement into something triumphant and honorable. Manifest Destiny, however, involved indigenous genocide, and even the beloved cowboy archetype is a whitewashed reimagining of the legacy of Black cowboys, ranch hands who constituted up to 25% of cattle drive participants. The Western genre is a primary site for a complete cultural redefinition of what the settlement of America signified — but four years ago, one of horror’s contemporary prodigies delivered a film that recontextualized the Western as a tool of reclamation, not only of American history but of Hollywood’s history as well.Jordan Peele’s *Nope*, which recently arrived on Netflix, clearly showcases its Western heritage, from its Agua Dulce setting to its horse-wrangling main characters. Yet, it also engages with another long-standing Hollywood obsession: UFOs and aliens. The comparison to Spielberg has followed Peele throughout his career, but it is nowhere more pronounced than in *Nope*, which follows siblings and Hollywood horse handlers Emerald (Keke Palmer) and OJ Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) as they attempt to capture photographic evidence of UFO activity in an effort to prevent their family ranch from failing. Even though the flying saucer in *Nope* is considerably more menacing than the aliens in *Close Encounters of the Third Kind*, they still share a common thematic thread — the alien as a portal to the unknown, a reminder that unforeseen wonders exist beyond our grasp. One of the aspects Peele’s third film so effectively conveys is the history of the Western as a setting for American exploitation. During the 19th century, American bison were hunted by settlers to the brink of extinction; *Nope* features no bison, but this theme of animal exploitation permeates the movie, most notably in the flashback sequences to the TV show *Gordy’s Home*, a fictional ‘90s sitcom starring a chimpanzee that tragically attacked much of the cast and crew after being provoked by birthday balloons. This event traumatizes one of the show’s young child actors, Ricky “Jupe” Park (Steven Yeun), who subsequently replicates that cycle by offering horses to the UFO in an attempt to control it. Unbeknownst to him, that UFO is actually a sentient alien creature (affectionately known as Jean Jacket) that behaves like an animal, and it does not respond kindly to attempts to subjugate it.Jupe’s attempts to wrangle Jean Jacket can be viewed as an extension of the deeply American desire to tame what it doesn’t fully understand. | Universal PicturesThe exploitation that Westerns largely overlooked was not solely confined to animals — the legacy of the Black cowboy is steeped in erasure, and Peele connects this to the historical omission of Black laborers and craftsmen in Hollywood. OJ and Em are descendants of the unnamed jockey in the Muybridge clip, a brief video of a man riding a horse that stands as one of the earliest moving images. The fact that the jockey’s identity has been lost to time reflects the countless non-white contributors to Hollywood’s history, which imbues OJ and Em’s quest with a profound, unspoken significance, an undertaking that will not only save the family ranch but also re-establish Black people as pioneers of the cinema camera, capturing the uncapturable.A recurring concept in *Nope* is the ambition to capture the “impossible shot,” something so extraordinary that it seems unreal. Within the film, that objective is inextricably linked to the heritage of the American Western. When stripped of the political and historical context that defines the genre, the Western is fundamentally about the search for a home, a place to call one’s own. For Em and OJ, successfully filming Jean Jacket would mean preserving Haywood Horses, their father’s life’s work and their closest connection to him after his untimely death. Despite being a rather powerful blend of genres — sci-fi, horror, western — the core of *Nope* lies in reconciling the history of the Western as a genre that sanitizes some of the darkest aspects of American history, while also addressing the deeply human desire to find a place to belong.*Nope* is streaming on Netflix. 25 Years Later, ‘Lanterns’ Is Crafting the Ideal Justice League Lineup

DC Studios(SeaPRwire) - We finally got the green light on Lanterns — and so much more. The latest teaser for HBO’s new superhero series offers our clearest glimpse yet, addressing many of the concerns fans had about the show's initial presentation. Yes, Lanterns remains predominantly brown in tone, and the narrative scope still feels somewhat unclear. The series is also doubling down on the notion that only one individual can wield the Green Lantern ring — between the experienced Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his hesitant protégé John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) — which may disappoint viewers hoping to see these two iconic heroes fight side by side.Still, it’s encouraging to witness Lanterns positioning John Stewart as Earth’s leading protector. Centered on his journey to becoming the new Green Lantern, the series will directly shape upcoming DC films, including James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, and potentially even a future Justice League movie. In the new Lanterns trailer, Hal stands as the sole obstacle preventing John from claiming the ring. According to the storyline, John can only become the Green Lantern if Hal is no longer around — strongly suggesting this version of Hal will meet his end during the series, allowing John to take over and join Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) as one of the sector’s primary defenders.Hal’s fate isn’t just being hinted at in the trailer. When Pierre was cast in Man of Tomorrow, most believed he would officially represent the Lantern Corps in the DC Universe. With Hal now declaring that John can only inherit the ring “over my dead body,” those expectations are all but confirmed. While it’s disappointing not to see Hal and John share the role, it’s a meaningful step for fans who grew up with John Stewart as the definitive Green Lantern, especially through animated series like Justice League. With Lanterns, we could be one step closer to the ideal Justice League lineup. | DCWhile the official formation of the Justice League in the DCU is still far off, John’s ascension and his upcoming appearance in Man of Tomorrow mark a significant milestone. With Superman (David Corenswet) and a version of Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) already part of this continuity — and Wonder Woman possibly lurking nearby — the super-team is gradually coming together. Lanterns plays a key role in building toward a major crossover event, while also developing into a compelling series in its own right.Lanterns premieres August 16 on HBO Max. The Most Outrageous Sci-Fi Movie of the Year Defies Expectations

(SeaPRwire) - Since the release of Alien, extraterrestrial beings have become a popular choice for creating unusual and terrifying antagonists in creature-driven films. From The Thing and Annihilation to Cloverfield, stories involving alien invasions and survival battles are common in cinematic history. However, their widespread use has led to certain expectations, and now these types of movies risk feeling repetitive. At the Cannes Film Festival, a new creature feature by an established Korean director has sparked divided reactions among critics—and fans can now preview the film with its latest trailer. Watch the teaser below:Hope marks the newest film from South Korean director Na Hong-jin, known for his previous works including The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing. As reported by Deadline, the movie’s synopsis is as follows: “In Hope Harbor, a secluded village near the Demilitarized Zone, police chief Bum-seok learns that a tiger has been spotted by local residents. As panic spreads through the community, Bum-seok finds himself facing a reality beyond imagination.”While only a teaser trailer has been released, the film has already screened at Cannes, where critics have shared their thoughts. It appears that the first hour of this two-hour and forty-minute film is essentially one continuous sequence focused on the pursuit of the mysterious creature at the center of the story. Although it drew comparisons to classics like Alien and Predator, as well as Attack on Titan, some reviewers criticized the subpar CGI effects once the creature was fully revealed. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich even likened it to The Mummy Returns, widely considered one of the worst examples of poorly rendered visual effects that disrupt viewer immersion. The film’s marketing team is deliberately keeping the main creature hidden, which may be masking a major flaw in the movie. | NEONHope’s ratings on Letterboxd reflect a wide range of opinions, making it difficult to predict how audiences will respond after NEON secures U.S. distribution rights. The film could emerge as the next standout entry in sci-fi horror creature features, joining the ranks of genre-defining classics—or the visual shortcomings might completely undermine any attempt at suspension of disbelief.Still, there may be a reasonable explanation for these issues: a rushed production schedule. Director Na Hong-jin told Deadline that what was shown at Cannes was not yet the finished product. “I was hoping for more applause… I really need to put in more effort,” he admitted. “To be honest, I didn’t have enough time to complete the film before Cannes. There’s still work to be done—I was editing the sound just the day before I left.”Given this context, it’s entirely possible that Hope could undergo further post-production revisions that address the criticisms raised. Even so, many critics praised the film as a promising evolution of the genre—there’s potential for it to only improve from here.Hope is set to premiere in U.S. theaters during fall 2026. A Gollum Prequel Draws Inspiration From DC’s Joker Film

New Line Cinema(SeaPRwire) - The concept of a new Lord of the Rings film might sound appealing — assuming there's enough source material to justify returning to Middle-earth. Beyond J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices and glossaries, though, nearly every major story in the universe has already been explored. This presents a unique challenge for The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming film set between Peter Jackson’s Hobbit prequels and his Lord of the Rings trilogy. With only scattered details about Andy Serkis’ Gollum found in Tolkien’s footnotes and brief narrative asides, what fresh perspective can this movie offer?Jackson, who returns as a producer on the project, has been wrestling with these very questions as The Hunt for Gollum moves forward. At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the filmmaker shared some insight into the film’s direction when speaking with IndieWire. “The Lord of the Rings contains extensive appendices at the end of the books,” he said, “and parts of The Hunt for Gollum are actually outlined there. The story covers Gollum’s early life and the events that shaped him into who he becomes. He’s on a journey toward the Shire while Rangers pursue him. Eventually, he’s captured and brought to Mordor — all of which is mentioned in the appendices.”Serkis will direct The Hunt for Gollum, a decision Jackson believes will bring a distinctive new flavor to the project. “I truly think that if the film centers on Gollum’s addiction and inner turmoil, Andy would approach it in a way that I never could,” he explained. The Hunt for Gollum will shift the franchise’s focus to Gollum, much like Joker did for the Joker. | Warner Bros. PicturesThe approach taken by The Hunt for Gollum also draws inspiration from Todd Phillips’ Joker, particularly how that film delved into the character’s psychology while still delivering a compelling narrative. Jackson and his frequent collaborator Fran Walsh looked to Joker as a guiding example. Since Gollum will tell its story primarily from the perspective of the title character — much like Joker reframed the Batman mythos around Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) — the filmmakers felt this structural choice aligned well with their vision.“We have the storyline that’s described in Tolkien’s appendices, and we intend to faithfully adapt that material,” Jackson said. “But we’re telling it from an internal, first-person perspective — meaning we need to get inside Gollum’s mind and understand his thoughts and feelings.”This creative challenge suits Serkis perfectly, given his long history of portraying Gollum with nuanced physicality and psychological depth. His intimate understanding of the character may finally reveal new layers within the world of Middle-earth. While the film isn’t essential to the overall saga, if it must exist, at least it’s being crafted by people determined to bring something original to the table. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on December 17, 2027. 55 Years Later, Horror Legend Appeared in the Highly Influential Thriller You’ve Never Seen

MGM-EMI Distributors(SeaPRwire) - Vincent Price had a one-of-a-kind approach to portraying revenge. In 1973’s Theatre of Blood, his actor character—driven to attempt suicide by harsh critics—returns from the dead to kill them, recreating elaborate death scenes from the very Shakespearean plays they’d panned his performances in. In 1953’s House of Wax, his sculptor character is left scarred after a museum fire set by a dishonest investor looking to cash in on insurance; he kills the investor and seals his body inside a new wax statue. But it was 1971’s The Abominable Dr. Phibes—released exactly 55 years ago today—that took ruthless vengeance to especially brutal yet creative heights. There, Price plays a grieving concert organist determined to track down and eliminate his late wife’s doctors, convinced their negligence caused her death.Since Phibes’ “Dr.” title comes from a Theology PhD, he uses his deep biblical knowledge to base each murder on one of the 10 Plagues of Egypt, each interpreted with great creative flair. Human ingenuity and innovative inventions stand in for divine punishment: while God sent a devastating hailstorm to destroy Egypt’s crops, Phibes uses solid ice to freeze one target to death. God turned Egypt’s water to blood, so Phibes drains another doctor of all his blood. The harrowing sequence cuts from the victim’s blood being drawn to large bottles on Phibes’ mantelpiece, then to a close-up of his eyes as he monitors each new addition. This continues until there are eight blood-filled bottles, and the victim’s face shifts from flushed red to a ghastly white.Even amid the brutal murders, moments of dark humor are scattered throughout. At a masquerade party, one doctor chuckles, “I’m a psychiatrist… a head shrinker”—unwittingly foreshadowing his own demise. Moments later, Phibes evokes the Plague of Frogs by fitting the man with a mechanical frog headpiece that gradually tightens around his skull. To amplify the horror, director Robert Fuest puts us in the victim’s suffocating POV: as his view of other masked partygoers grows increasingly blurred, a red mist descends, obscuring his vision with dripping blood. Each death feels ceremonial—often interspersed with scenes of Phibes and his young assistant (Virginia North) waltzing around his secret lair while a band of robot musicians plays, interludes that add to the film’s surreal atmosphere.Price’s remarkable physical performance grounds The Abominable Dr. Phibes’ more outlandish moments. Disfigured in a car accident that also took his voice, Phibes’ barely restrained fury is visible in the tense movements of his throat. A machine speaks for him, but the sadness in his eyes is apparent even under layers of prosthetics. As he watches another doctor’s plane nosedive—after filling its cockpit with rats—he can’t quite smile, but a slight shoulder movement conveys supreme satisfaction.Another costume party gone wrong. | MGM-EMI DistributorsCampy where 1995’s Seven is grim, and vibrantly colorful where Seven is rain-soaked, The Abominable Dr. Phibes stands out for envisioning biblical-themed murders over two decades before David Fincher’s crime thriller. Its array of gruesome torture traps and killing devices also makes it a precursor to the Saw franchise; by the end, Phibes forces a surgeon to operate on his own unconscious son. If the surgeon fails to extract a key near the boy’s heart, slow-dripping acid will burn through his face. This nightmarish scenario echoes the first Saw movie, where a former addict (Shawnee Smith) has 60 seconds to carve a key from her sedated cellmate’s stomach to free herself—otherwise, a trap on her head will rip her jaws apart. Price reprised his role in the 1972 sequel Dr. Phibes Rises Again, but even as the embittered Phibes meticulously set up crimes and evaded detection, the actor behind him was quietly leaving his mark on modern horror. The Abominable Dr. Phibes is available on the Internet Archive.
