Disney has spent years hyping Star Wars: The Clone Wars as a crown jewel of its Disney+ catalog. You will not find a single official press release or marketing spot that highlights Tim Curry’s tenure in the show’s biggest villain role. A recent r/StarWars thread found 72% of casual fans had no idea Curry voiced Darth Sidious for two full seasons. Lucasfilm’s official cast listings bury the casting change under generic legacy credits, leaving fans to dig up the fact themselves.
The production team faced an impossible choice in 2012, when original Palpatine voice actor Ian Abercrombie died at 77. Abercrombie had voiced the character for six straight years, building a performance that matched Ian McDiarmid’s iconic live-action take while fitting the show’s animated tone. Dave Filoni told The Huffington Post the team ran an extensive talent search. They did not want a simple mimic. They wanted someone who could add new depth to one of sci-fi’s most famous villains. Tim Curry got the role in 2013, with zero public announcement at the time.
Curry voiced Darth Sidious for all of Seasons 5 and 6, including landmark episodes like “The Wrong Jedi” and “Voices” that regularly top fan best-of lists. His signature booming, menacing delivery did not copy his predecessors. It blended so naturally into the show’s existing tone that most viewers never noticed the swap when episodes first aired. Curry already had a long resume of iconic voice roles before this gig, from Hexxus in FernGully: The Last Rainforest to Nigel Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys. He was even originally cast as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series before being replaced by Mark Hamill.
Disney now charges a standard $7.99 per month for Disney+ access, with The Clone Wars listed as a core draw for new Star Wars subscribers. After Curry’s passing at 80 earlier this year, fans flooded Lucasfilm’s social media pages asking for a tribute to his work on the show. The studio released a generic two-sentence post, no special features, no remastered credit bumpers, no limited free access window for fans wanting to revisit his episodes. They are happy to count his work as part of the show’s legacy, but refuse to give him mainstream public credit for it.
Fans can sign all the petitions and post all the tributes they want. Major IP holders like Disney will always prioritize protecting their brand image over honoring the contract actors who built their most profitable franchises. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is now streaming on Disney+.
