Pope Francis’s Special Bond with a Gaza Parish Remembered
Pope Francis passed away on Monday, April 21, after being hospitalized on March 23. He had been undergoing treatment for double pneumonia and related complications for five weeks. He was 88 years old. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was chosen as Pope Benedict XVI's successor in 2013. He was known for advocating peace amidst global conflicts. A problem cannot be solved unless it is acknowledged, and the best way to acknowledge it is through discussion. This is especially relevant to climate change. Climate has been a topic of national conversation for over four decades, particularly during extreme weather events associated with global warming, such as droughts, floods, heat waves, and hurricanes. However, between these emergencies, climate often becomes a secondary concern. Studies from 2015 and 2021 revealed that only 35% of Americans discuss climate change even occasionally. Since 2009, surveys have indicated that people are more likely to say they "rarely" or "never" discuss climate than "occasionally" or "often." A recent study in PLOS Climate investigates this "climate silence" and suggests ways to overcome it. Public discussion of political or social issues can be affected by a "spiral of silence." The less a topic is discussed, the less likely people are to bring it up, leading to even fewer discussions. Conversely, increased discussion and debate encourage more people to participate. In the context of climate change, this leads to a "proclimate social feedback loop." The authors of the PLOS One paper aimed to identify this loop or the lack thereof. The research involved analyzing three existing studies from 2020 and 2021, encompassing over 3,000 participants who were surveyed about their beliefs and feelings regarding climate change. The surveys included questions on whether they believed in a scientific consensus on global warming, their certainty about its reality, their belief in human responsibility for it, their level of worry about it, the risk it posed to themselves, their families, and their communities, whether they viewed it as positive or negative, the efforts of their families and friends to combat it, the importance of such action for their family, friends, and themselves, and the frequency with which they encountered information about global warming in the media. Lastly, they were asked how often they discussed global warming with family and friends. The surveys did not determine whether the initial variables caused the discussions, which is crucial for establishing causation, or if they simply coexisted. The new study employed statistical analyses to determine this. According to Margaret Orr, a PhD student at George Mason University and lead author of the paper, the original surveys did not analyze the influence of independent variables on climate discussion but merely reported results without examining interactions between variables. The researchers found that nearly all the variables, except for three, contributed to increased discussions about climate change. The three exceptions were the respondents' personal conviction that climate change is happening, their belief in a scientific consensus, and their belief that humans are the cause. These factors would seem likely to initiate concern and discussion, and the researchers have some theories as to why they don't. Orr suggests that one potential reason for these variables not being significant predictors of climate discussion is the possibility of indirect effects. She posits that each of these three factors may lead to worry, which in turn may spark conversations. The more these conversations occur, the better. Orr notes that previous research indicates that people are more likely to take action when asked by someone they like and respect. Climate conversations can help reverse the spiral of silence: as more people realize that others are concerned about climate change and support climate action, more people will discuss it.

However, Trump isn't the sole issue; he represents voter frustration and disappointment. We must recognize that global climate policy has been characterized more by rhetoric than action. Skepticism towards grand promises, elaborate plans, subsidy programs, and frequent climate conferences is understandable. Regardless of Trump's personal views on the climate crisis, he may inadvertently contribute to its solution through "creative destruction." His election might signal the end of superficial climate policies, paving the way for more effective, practical approaches at both national and global levels. This could mean less greenwashing, less bureaucracy, and a greater focus on measurable results. It could also involve more independent oversight of companies' actual environmental impact. Appealing to companies' self-interest to adopt new emissions measurement technologies is one example. The new approach to climate policy should focus on identifying the fastest, largest, and most cost-effective gains within specific markets and using available tools. For example, AXA XL, an insurance company in Connecticut, is using AI to predict and mitigate the climate, human, and financial impacts of natural disasters like wildfires through early warnings. The biggest danger isn't Trump alone but continuing to invest in technologies that lack scalability or have limited applicability, while ignoring smarter, data-driven solutions to address the most pressing issues. Electric vehicles (EVs) are important, but their mass adoption is not a panacea. The climate impact of EVs depends on their power source, battery production methods, and available alternatives. EVs reduce emissions and offer other benefits when used in low-carbon power environments. However, a complete rethinking of transportation could yield even greater gains. Trump is unlikely to provide the necessary leadership or investment, but moving beyond incremental progress and greenwashing allows us to envision more innovative and sustainable solutions. Conversely, consider methane, one of the easiest climate wins available, yet largely ignored. The Biden administration attempted a methane fee, a data-supported regulation, which was later weakened by Congress. However, even that policy was overly complex, and oil and gas companies were hesitant to be transparent. Satellite imagery, combined with AI, enables real-time tracking of leaks. Data indicates that half of all methane reductions in oil and gas could be achieved at little to no cost, as stopping leaks increases revenue through the sale of the recovered gas. Effective regulation could include penalties for excessive methane emissions, particularly for those with the financial means and moral obligation to eliminate externalities. If Trump hinders domestic progress, major trading partners like the EU, Korea, and Japan could implement climate-friendly trade policies such as carbon border adjustments or import standards. This could indirectly encourage U.S. market compliance, even under the current administration. Meanwhile, private capital is increasingly pursuing green initiatives. One investor described decarbonization efforts in Europe as "a bigger opportunity than the internet." Businesses in the U.S., Canada, and Europe are leveraging AI and satellite data to improve emissions monitoring. They are also investing in innovative low-carbon technologies like advanced battery storage, small modular reactors, and next-generation carbon capture. With growing availability of clean technologies like wind, solar, and battery power, and increasing demand for sustainability, companies that fail to adapt risk falling behind. It's important to remember that many major breakthroughs in recent decades have come from private actors responding to favorable conditions, such as the shift from coal to cheap gas through fracking, the decreasing cost of solar panels, and real-time monitoring of wildfires and deforestation, rather than government mandates. A second Trump administration should not lead to abandoning climate goals but rather embracing realism. This means that foreign powers should concentrate on making polluters pay in ways that are straightforward and enforceable. This means investing in transformative technologies that reduce emissions and benefit businesses. Indeed, long-term investors understand that natural disasters hurt business—and that they can’t stop hurricanes at the border. This means prioritizing effective solutions over idealistic ones. And it means discarding policies that frustrate consumers, burden businesses, and make little impact on the climate. People are tired of slogans; they want results. And those results won’t come from crossing our fingers or making five-year plans. They will come from doing what works. And that is the task for those pragmatic, climate-conscious people keen to make sure that environmental action happens—no matter who is in office. ```

As August 29, 2025, nears, the city will mark twenty years since Hurricane Katrina's devastating impact on New Orleans. A key question remains: How have coastal communities strategically tackled interconnected issues such as flooding, environmental concerns, community preservation, economic development, and sustainability? In the Lower Ninth Ward, residents and stakeholders united to prioritize the community's recovery. Sankofa CDC's resilience is a driving force behind the area's resurgence. The community is now home to approximately 7,500 residents, compared to the 14,000 before Hurricane Katrina. According to Rashida Ferdinand, founder and executive director of Sankofa CDC: "Sankofa Community Development Corporation is dedicated to building healthier communities for future generations. Since 2008, we've concentrated on delivering flood protection, food access, and economic opportunities to the Lower Ninth Ward. We achieve this by valuing community input and collaborating with stakeholders and experts to transform neglected land into community-focused establishments." Sankofa CDC's work is setting a precedent in the community, where: homeowners comprise 48% of the population; fewer than 25 businesses operate on main streets (mostly convenience stores); the median household income is $40,960; and Black residents make up 84% of the population.* Recreation & Relief at the Wetland Park & Nature Trail The Sankofa Wetland Park & Nature Trail project is developing 40 acres of a previously degraded natural area on Florida Ave., adjacent to the Bayou Bienvenue Wetland Triangle. The project aims to convert the land into a restored ecosystem and natural wildlife habitat for recreation, environmental education, and flood defense. In 2017, Sankofa secured the rights to transform the site through a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement with the City of New Orleans. To date, 20 acres have been developed and are open to the public for recreational activities, supporting the return of native wildlife, plants, and animals. Food Access in the Ninth Ward The Sankofa Fresh Start Market, the Lower Ninth Ward's only green grocery store, offers 1,600 sq. ft. of space with a variety of healthy, whole foods to address the community's nutritional needs. A "Main Street" CorridorSankofa CDC is actively working to revitalize the St. Claude Avenue commercial corridor in the Lower Ninth Ward. The aim is to promote health-focused revitalization and address long-standing disinvestment in the area. As a result, the organization has earned a Main Street America designation, recognizing its commitment to "strengthening older and historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts nationwide." The Future for Sankofa CDC & the Lower Ninth WardIn the coming 5-10 years, Sankofa CDC will work with the City of New Orleans, planners, and partners to develop the remaining 20 acres at the Wetland Park & Nature Trail, including an outdoor amphitheater, stormwater management infrastructure, water quality systems, and expanded programming. Sankofa CDC anticipates completing all 40 acres of the Wetland Park by 2026.
