Hong Kong products highly rated by ASEAN e-shoppers
HONG KONG, Mar 10, 2025 - (ACN Newswire via SeaPRwire.com) - Hong Kong businesses are well placed to make good on the government’s budget commitment to step up e-commerce trade with the ASEAN bloc, according to new research from the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). In particular, the findings show that the extension of the E-Commerce Easy initiative may be of huge benefit to Hong Kong’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).Titled ASEAN eCommerce opportunities: Insights on Consumer Behaviours and Positioning of Hong Kong Products, the research shows that Hong Kong brands and products are already particularly valued in six key ASEAN markets – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – with every indication that this positive perception will lead to significant growth in future trade.Previewed today, the full report will be released on 19 March during a dedicated session at this year’s HKTDC MarketingPulse and eTailingPulse events at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.HK electronic, fashion, cosmetic products popular in ASEANAmong the key findings of the research is the high level of popularity Hong Kong brands and products enjoy among ASEAN-6 e-consumers. In fact, some 70% of online shoppers within the six-nation grouping indicated they had bought at least one Hong Kong-sourced product within the past 12 months. This preference was particularly pronounced among younger consumers, with the 18-29-year-old demographic indicating the highest regard for goods of Hong Kong origin. In terms of the factors behind the appeal of Hong Kong brands and products for ASEAN consumers, the research identified three primary reasons. Firstly – and most compellingly – some 35% of respondents perceived Hong Kong-sourced goods as less costly and better value for money than those from other sources.Secondly, a significant proportion of respondents (33%) stated that they particularly valued Hong Kong-sourced items for the way they seamlessly and successfully blended Asian and Western elements. A further 32% indicated that the stylish nature of the online inventory of Hong Kong-sourced items was the attribute they valued most highly. In terms of Hong Kong e-commerce categories with the highest level of appeal for ASEAN-6 purchasers, consumer electronic items topped the list, winning favour with 70% of respondents. Taking the number-two spot was Hong Kong-sourced fashion items (38%), while coming a close third was the city’s online range of cosmetic/personal care products (34%).Singaporean, Thai and Malaysian e-shoppers spend the mostThe survey also found e-shoppers from Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia spent the most per purchase on Hong Kong goods. Take Hong Kong-sourced consumer electronics as an example, Singapore e-shoppers on average spent US$371 per purchase, followed by those in Thailand (US$276).In terms of individual ASEAN markets, it was Thailand that showed the greatest partiality to Hong Kong e-commerce items, with 81% of the relevant survey respondents having purchased such an item within the past 12 months. In second place was Indonesia, with 73% of respondents having ordered a Hong Kong item online within the last year. Slightly below this, in third place, was the Philippines, with 69% of the country’s respondents having made a related purchase over the past 12 months. In terms of age demographics, respondents aged 30-49 had the highest average spending per purchase.Separately, an average of 76% of those 18-29 year-olds across all ASEAN-6 markets had purchased a Hong Kong-sourced item online within the past 12 months. Among the 30-49 segment, the corresponding figure fell marginally to 72%, before falling further – to 52% – for online shoppers aged 50 or above. Reassuringly, even in this older category, a slender majority still manifested a preference for buying from the city via an online channel.Commenting on the significance of the survey, Irina Fan, Director of HKTDC Research, said: “It’s encouraging that the first study of its kind should show just how willing ASEAN consumers are to purchase Hong Kong brands and products via a variety of online channels. In line with our findings, Hong Kong SMEs should particularly bear in mind the high regard consumers in Thailand and Indonesia have for Hong Kong-sourced products.”Ms Fan added: “In terms of product categories, it’s clearly particularly good news for Hong Kong companies in the consumer electronics sector, an area that has long been one of the city’s key strengths.”Full report revealed at eTailingPulseThe HKTDC is organising the MarketingPulse and eTailingPulse conferences at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre next Wednesday, 19 March. The full ASEAN e-Commerce opportunities: Insights on Consumer Behaviours and Positioning of Hong Kong Products report will be unveiled at an eTailingPulse panel discussion, where business leaders will share insights from their successful experiences in the ASEAN e-commerce market. The panel is among nearly 30 sessions at the two Pulse events, which bring together more than 65 global elites from diverse industry sectors, including influential marketing experts, economists, retail giants, brand strategists, advertising and PR professionals and e-commerce leaders.Themed Inspiring Possibilities, the events aim to turn visionary ideas into actionable strategies and spark cross-disciplinary collaboration. This year’s event will spotlight six key marketing topics: leveraging data and artificial intelligence (AI) to drive innovative marketing strategies; integrating art, music and culture into brand marketing to explore new frontiers; embracing neurodiversity to foster more inclusive marketing perspectives; opportunities in the ASEAN and halal markets; addressing the challenges and possibilities of global industry transformation in light of the rising trend of single-person households; and empowering the “she economy” through innovative AI solutions to enhance the market competitiveness of e-commerce platforms.Attendees will have the opportunity to explore forward-thinking market dynamics, emerging trends, innovative marketing strategies and compelling success stories.HKTDC support SMEs tapping into e-commerceThe HKTDC has been supporting SMEs to tap into the tremendous business opportunities brought by the rapidly developing e-commerce market. The HKTDC Design Gallery online store will extend to Singapore and Malaysia in 2025/26, followed by Thailand in a subsequent phase. Hong Kong suppliers will be able to sell their products to the ASEAN region through this online channel in the form of cross-border e-commerce. The range of products to be offered in the initial stage includes gifts, housewares, bags, baby/kids’ products and eco-friendly products. This year, the HKTDC is also launching a year-long programme called E-Commerce Express to address the pain points faced by local SMEs when developing cross-border e-commerce businesses in the mainland. The programme will involve the HKTDC, together with major e-commerce or social media platforms, arranging a series of thematic training seminars and research sharing sessions.Appendix- E-commerce Easy: The E-commerce Easy initiative was set up by the Hong Kong SAR Government in July 2024 to help fund local businesses as they seek to serve potential mainland clients via a range of e-commerce channels. In the 2024 Policy Address, the Government announced it would expand the scheme to cover ASEAN-10 markets within 2025, with Hong Kong companies looking to access the bloc via online sales platforms eligible for subsidies of up to HK$1 million.- Methodology: HKTDC Research conducted an online survey of 1,846 online shoppers in June and July 2024 covering the six ASEAN-6 markets of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore. There were roughly 300 respondents from each country. Typically, respondents were aged 18 to 60, resided within selected major metropolitan areas, made online purchases at least once a month, and were mid- to high-annual income earners.ReferencesHKTDC Research website: https://research.hktdc.com/en/Photo download: https://bit.ly/41zMoAfHKTDC Director of Research Irina Fan previews key findings of a new report, ASEAN eCommerce opportunities: Insights on Consumer Behaviours and Positioning of Hong Kong ProductsMedia enquiriesPlease contact the HKTDC’s Communication and Public Affairs Department:Jane CheungTel: (852) 2584 4137Email: jane.mh.cheung@hktdc.orgKaty WongTel: (852) 2584 4524Email: katy.ky.wong@hktdc.org About HKTDCThe Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is a statutory body established in 1966 to promote, assist and develop Hong Kong's trade. CEPI funds Nagasaki University to develop innovative vaccines using Nanoball platform and NEC’s AI
TOKYO, Mar 10, 2025 - (JCN Newswire via SeaPRwire.com) - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has announced that it will partner with the Nagasaki University DEJIMA Infectious Disease Research Alliance (Director: Prof. Kouichi Morita) for a research and development (R&D) project with support from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).The CEPI funding, of up to 750 million JPY, will facilitate the composition optimization of "Nanoball," a proprietary vaccine particle covered under Nagasaki University’s intellectual property, and the application of NEC OncoImmunity (NOI)’s artificial intelligence (AI) for the analysis of candidate proteins for a Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) vaccine. The emerging tick-borne virus, a member of the new windowPhenuivirus family, poses a serious public health threat in Japan and wider East Asia.If the project is successful, the platform has the potential to be rapidly adapted to develop vaccine candidates against other disease pathogens, including a novel or as-yet-identified "Disease X" that could cause a serious epidemic or pandemic.Nagasaki University’s innovative technology works by encasing mRNA into Nanoball particles. While mRNA vaccines have been identified as a fast and flexible platform to use in response to infectious disease outbreaks, the next-generation Nanoball technology could help overcome current challenges with the vaccine design to improve its stability and help with the delivery of mRNA to cells to elicit a stronger immune response. The Nanoball design could also enable the vaccine to not require ultra-low temperatures, expanding its access in low-resource areas and hard-to-reach settings, including in low- and middle-income countries who may otherwise lack the infrastructure needed to store and distribute mRNA vaccines in specific conditions.Findings could therefore support the 100 Days Mission, an ambitious goal spearheaded by CEPI and embraced by Japan and other G7 and G20 nations to develop a vaccine against a new virus with outbreak potential in as little as three months."We don’t know where or when the next Disease X will strike – but we know that it is coming," says Dr Richard Hatchett, CEO of CEPI, "As the COVID-19 pandemic shows, we need to be more prepared and act more quickly when responding to an emerging threat. We are delighted to be working with our partners in Japan to carry out this new research looking at whether Nagasaki University’s ‘Nanoball’ technology could provide an improved way of mRNA delivery vehicle, thereby offering faster and more effective vaccine protection in an outbreak."Prof. Takeshi Nagayasu, President of Nagasaki University says, "We are delighted that our SFTSV vaccine, developed using Nagasaki University’s proprietary Nanoball technology, can contribute to CEPI’s efforts and the global 100-Day Mission pursued by leading nations. Rapid vaccine development is crucial in preparing for future pandemics, and we are proud that our research can play a role in this initiative. We look forward to further collaboration in advancing innovative technologies to strengthen global health security and pandemic preparedness."Dr. Saverio Niccolini, Chief Executive Officer, NEC OncoImmunity commented, "NOI is honored to collaborate with CEPI and Nagasaki University in the fight against emerging infectious diseases. We are confident that our advanced AI technology will play a pivotal role in designing a vaccine for the severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), a deadly tick-borne pathogen with high mortality rates. This partnership underscores our commitment to harnessing our cutting-edge AI for innovative vaccine development."Key Points1. About SFTSSFTS is a viral infectious disease primarily transmitted to humans through tick bites, which is prevalent in East Asia, including Western Japan. It causes fever, thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), leukopenia (low white blood cell count), and multi-organ failure. Severe cases can result in fatalities.2. Scope of Research & DevelopmentThis project will focus on preclinical research, prior to human clinical trials, to develop a vaccine that can prevent SFTS onset and severe cases.3. Potential ImpactIf successful, this R&D could pave the way for clinical trials and regulatory approval, ultimately leading to widespread vaccination of an SFTS. The project aims to contribute to SFTS countermeasures not only in Japan but across East Asia, helping to save lives that would otherwise be lost to SFTS.The research could also highlight the AI and Nanoball technology as a promising new tool which, with further research, could also help fight other infectious disease threats with epidemic or even pandemic potential. This includes a novel or as-yet-identified Disease X – an emerging threat which could strike in the future and cause a serious humanitarian crisis. COVID-19 was one of the most recent Disease X threats.Overview of the Research and Development InitiativeAbout CEPICEPI is an innovative partnership between public, private, philanthropic, and civil organizations. Its mission is to accelerate the development of vaccines and other biologic countermeasures against epidemic and pandemic threats so they can be accessible to all people in need. The Government of Japan has been a key supporter of CEPI since its inception and is one of CEPI’s largest government supporters in the world.Funding & AgreementNagasaki University has signed an agreement with CEPI for a three-year, $5 million (approximately 750 million JPY) research and development project. This marks the third CEPI-supported initiative in Japan.Project DetailsThe project aims to develop a vaccine to prevent SFTS onset and severe cases.Nagasaki University Professor Hitoshi Sasaki and team will optimize its current Nanoball composition using Japanese encephalitis virus, an area in which the university has extensive expertise, to develop the new vaccine.NEC OncoImmunity will apply AI-driven genetic sequence analysis to identify potential mRNA vaccine candidates for SFTS.Professor Jiro Yasuda and team will conduct preclinical studies to evaluate the efficacy of the developed SFTS vaccine.Expected OutcomesThis project is expected to lay the groundwork for clinical trials and potential commercialization, providing a lifesaving vaccine to populations at risk of SFTS.The research could also highlight the potential of the AI and Nanoball technology to improve the delivery of mRNA vaccines against other diseases with epidemic and pandemic potential, including known viruses and the hypothetical Disease X.About NEC CorporationNEC Corporation has established itself as a leader in the integration of IT and network technologies while promoting the brand statement of “Orchestrating a brighter world.” NEC enables businesses and communities to adapt to rapid changes taking place in both society and the market as it provides for the social values of safety, security, fairness and efficiency to promote a more sustainable world where everyone has the chance to reach their full potential. LA County DA to Oppose Resentencing of Menendez Brothers
Los Angeles County's District Attorney announced Monday his opposition to resentencing Lyle and Erik Menendez, who confessed to the 1989 killings of their parents in their Beverly Hills home. Nathan Hochman, who assumed the role of District Attorney in December, had previously stated his opposition to a new trial for the Menendez brothers last month. The brothers were convicted in 1996 and given life sentences without the possibility of parole. Hochman stated at a Monday press conference that his decision was based on whether the brothers demonstrated "insight and complete responsibility" regarding false statements made during their initial trial, including their original denials of killing their parents. Former District Attorney George Gascón recommended in October that the brothers be resentenced to 50 years to life, making them immediately eligible for parole. Hochman has since criticized his predecessor's recommendation as a "desperate political move." The brothers, now in their 50s, were convicted of murdering their father, Jose Menendez, an entertainment executive, and their mother, Kitty Menendez. They have been seeking freedom in recent years, citing new evidence of their father’s sexual abuse, and have the support of most of their extended family. California Governor Gavin Newsom directed the state parole board last month to assess the potential risk the brothers would pose to the public if released. The Menendez brothers are also seeking clemency from Newsom, who has stated he will defer his decision until Hochman has reviewed the case.
Mark Carney’s Climate Change Plans as Canada’s Incoming Prime Minister
Mark Carney, formerly a central banker, is poised to become Canada's Prime Minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party. He will navigate critical issues such as a trade dispute with the U.S. and the country's efforts to combat climate change. Elections must be held by October 20th, but could occur sooner. Regardless of which party wins, the next few years are crucial for Canada's climate goals. The nation needs to cut emissions significantly from 2005 levels to meet its international obligations, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Carney, drawing from his financial expertise, has become a prominent figure in climate action, connecting the financial world with the fight against climate change. What is Mark Carney’s Climate Background? Since leaving the banking sector, Carney has strived to engage the private sector in achieving net-zero emissions, calling the green transition "the greatest commercial opportunity of our time" at a 2020 event in London. In 2019, he was appointed U.N. Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, and in 2021, he established the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, an initiative designed to unite financial institutions in supporting the transition to a net-zero economy. His tenure at the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020 heightened his awareness of the climate crisis. He stated in a 2021 with the United Nations: "When I became governor of the Bank of England, which oversees the insurance industry, I saw that the number of extreme weather events had tripled and the cost of those events had gone up five times in a quarter century. These things really concentrated my mind on climate.” What Would His Climate Goals Be as Prime Minister? Carney's campaign has outlined several climate-focused economic initiatives. Initially, Carney intends to eliminate Canada's consumer carbon tax, which imposes fees on consumers using fossil fuels, arguing that it burdens consumers instead of major polluters. He stated in his March 9th victory speech: "When I see that something’s not working I will change it. So my government will immediately eliminate the divisive consumer carbon tax on families and farmers and small and medium-sized businesses." Instead, he proposes financial incentives to make environmentally friendly choices, such as energy-efficient appliances or electric cars, more accessible to consumers. He also advocates for federal permitting reform to expedite the approval of clean energy projects and measures like improving to better reward high emitters that reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Carney also promises to phase out fossil fuel use in federal buildings by 2030 and expand the country’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure. What is Pierre Poilievre’s Climate Stance? Both Carney and Pierre Poilievre, whose Conservative Party is expected to contend against Carney's Liberal Party in the upcoming election, advocate for the removal of Canada's carbon tax. Poilievre has centered his political career on his "Axe the Tax" campaign, attributing it to the country's cost-of-living issues. However, unlike Carney's proposed green alternative, Poilievre and the Conservatives support expanding oil and gas production in Canada. Poilievre has also opposed significant climate initiatives, including a cap on oil and gas pollution and the mandating a across Canada by 2035. Throughout his 20 years as an MP, he has seldom voted in favor of climate initiatives, supporting environmental protection measures only 13 times, according to an analysis of his voting record by . This includes votes on protecting whales and ensuring clean drinking water for First Nations, compared to his 400 anti-climate votes over the same period.
The Search for Sudiksha Konanki: Key Details
The search continues for a University of Pittsburgh student who disappeared last week while on spring break in the Dominican Republic. Sudiksha Konanki, 20, was last seen early on Thursday, March 6. Surveillance footage shows her seemingly entering the beach at the Hotel Riu in Punta Cana with a friend, who is currently being investigated. Police were notified of her disappearance on Friday at 8 a.m. after receiving a call from the U.S. embassy. Since then, officials have been working with the Dominican Republic Air Force, Navy, Fire Department, and hotel staff, conducting a search by sea, air, and land with the help of canine units. Divers, drones, and helicopters are also being used in the search. The Dominican Republic National Police stated in a March 9 statement that further details about Konanki, a U.S. permanent resident and Indian citizen, will be released as the investigation progresses. The State Department told TIME in an email that they are aware of the reports of the missing University of Pittsburgh student in the Dominican Republic, but have no further details to share due to privacy concerns. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Sunday that they are collaborating with the Department of State, FBI, DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, and University of Pittsburgh police to assist with the investigation. The Dominican Republic has a level 2 travel advisory, advising visitors to exercise increased caution due to crime. In a statement on Sunday, the University of Pittsburgh said they are in contact with Konanki’s family and local authorities, urging anyone with information to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, offering their full support to find her and bring her home safely. Here’s what we know. What happened? Konanki arrived in the Dominican Republic on March 3 with five friends. She went missing after 4:15 a.m. on March 6, the last time she was seen on video surveillance entering the beach area with others, according to the Dominican Republic National Police. In an interview, Konanki’s father said his daughter went to the beach early that morning with her friends and other men they met at the hotel. “Her friends came back after some time and my daughter did not come back,” said Subbarayudu Konanki. Officials said a young man also entered the beach, and they are working to verify his account of events. While some local officials appear to have told media outlets about a possible drowning, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office told TIME on Monday that those reports were “speculative” and that there is “no evidence of this at this time.” The prosecutor’s office and other investigators are interviewing Konanki’s friends to determine where she went missing and to search the surrounding area. Konanki’s father told CNN that he wants authorities to investigate the possibility of kidnapping or human trafficking. “We don’t think she would be able to survive for more than three days in the water and I think something else might’ve happened to her,” he said. The Riu hotel chain has not yet responded to TIME’s request for comment. Konanki’s parents are traveling to Punta Cana, according to reports. The Indian Embassy stated in a Facebook post that they are in contact with Konanki’s parents and are providing all possible assistance in coordination with the Dominican Republic government authorities. ```
