Gold Prices Surge: Key Factors Driving the Rally

NEW YORK — Gold prices have reached unprecedented highs amidst widespread economic instability. Gold futures exceeded $3,000 per troy ounce this week, a historic first. Spot gold prices in New York are closely following this trend. Demand for gold typically surges during uncertain times as investors seek secure investments. The current spike in gold prices is attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, which have triggered an international trade war, disrupting financial markets and threatening to fuel inflation for both consumers and businesses. Analysts predict that gold prices may continue to rise if current trends persist. However, precious metals are inherently volatile, making future predictions uncertain. Here’s what to know. What’s the price of gold today? According to FactSet, the closing price for New York spot gold on Thursday reached a record $2,988 per troy ounce—the standard measurement for precious metals, equivalent to 31 grams. This is over $825 higher than the spot price of gold a year ago. Gold futures surpassed $3,000 on Thursday but decreased to just over $2,990 by midday Friday. FactSet reports that spot gold prices have risen nearly 14% since the beginning of 2025. In contrast, the stock market has declined, with the S&P 500 falling by more than 5% this year, even affecting blue-chip stocks. For example, Apple just experienced its worst week in five years. Why is the price of gold going up? The primary driver is uncertainty. Investor interest in gold typically increases during times of anxiety, and there has been significant economic disruption in recent months. Currently, the greatest uncertainty stems from Trump’s escalating trade war. The president’s fluctuating announcements of new levies and retaliatory tariffs from key allies have created instability for businesses and consumers, who economists say will bear the burden through higher prices. Concerns about inflation and tariffs caused confidence among U.S. households and businesses to decline at the start of the year. According to a preliminary survey released Friday by the University of Michigan, these concerns are worsening. The survey's measure of consumer sentiment fell for the third consecutive month, largely due to worries about the future. Joe Cavatoni, chief market strategist at the World Gold Council, stated on Friday that he and others have anticipated gold’s recent milestone for months. In an email, he noted that “global challenges and risks that come with managing money today” have increased concerns, leading more people to consider gold as a “safe haven.” He added, “This has driven gold to break record after record, and with rising inflation expectations, lower rates, and continued uncertainty, we anticipate continued support for gold in the future.” Over the past year, analysts have also noted strong gold demand from central banks worldwide amid geopolitical tensions, including the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. Is gold worth the investment? Proponents of investing in gold consider it a “safe haven,” asserting that it can diversify and balance an investment portfolio while mitigating potential future risks. Some investors are also reassured by the tangible nature of gold and its potential for increased value over time. However, experts advise against over-reliance on a single investment. Not everyone agrees that gold is a sound investment. Critics argue that gold is not always the effective inflation hedge it is often portrayed to be and that there are more efficient methods for protecting against capital loss, such as derivative-based investments. The Commodity Futures Trade Commission has also cautioned against gold investments. The commission noted that precious metals can be highly volatile, and prices increase with demand, meaning that "when economic anxiety or instability is high, the people who typically profit from precious metals are the sellers." The commission advises that if you choose to invest in gold, it is important to educate yourself on safe trading practices and be wary of potential scams and counterfeits in the market. ```

The Safety of Artificial Food Coloring: What You Need to Know

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) who aims to combat chronic diseases by reforming the nation's food system, recently told food manufacturers that the Trump Administration intends to eliminate artificial colors from food products. This announcement follows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) recent ban on Red Dye No. 3 in food and medications taken orally, a decision made before Kennedy assumed his new position. Consumer advocates and some health experts have voiced concerns about other dyes, and a number of states, at least a dozen, are considering legislation to restrict the use of certain dyes. Artificial food dyes, used to color food and beverage products, have sparked considerable debate among researchers and experts regarding their safety for human consumption. Here’s a summary of what you should know about this issue. Why was Red 3 banned by the FDA? The FDA initially prohibited the use of Red 3 in cosmetics and topical drugs in 1990, based on research indicating that the dye caused cancer in male rats. Federal regulations mandate that the agency prohibit food additives found to cause cancer in animals or humans, leading consumer and health advocates to urge the FDA to also ban Red 3 in foods. However, the agency only took this action recently in January. In its announcement, the FDA stated that the mechanism by which Red 3 causes cancer in male rats "does not occur in humans," adding that "studies in other animals and in humans did not show these effects.” What common foods contain artificial food dyes? Other artificial dyes—such as Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, and Green 3—are approved by the FDA for use in foods and are present in many common food items. On Monday, Kennedy spoke with executives from companies such as PepsiCo and Kraft Heinz, both of which market products containing artificial dyes. contains Yellow 5 and Blue 1, while includes Yellow 5 and 6. PepsiCo owns , which contains Yellow 5 and 6, as well as Red 40. Are artificial food dyes considered healthy for human consumption? Some research suggests that certain artificial food dyes may contribute to behavioral issues in some children, but the FDA has not found a definitive "causal link" between the two (though the agency did recommend further research). Jerold Mande, a former FDA senior adviser and former deputy undersecretary for food safety at the Department of Agriculture, says a definitive answer on the safety of these dyes requires more research into their effects on human health. “There’s different degrees of evidence showing harm,” Mande says. During his confirmation hearings to lead HHS, Kennedy indicated his support for increased research into food additives at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the FDA. However, on Feb. 7, the NIH announced funding cuts, prompting a lawsuit from 22 states, arguing that the cuts would “devastate critical public health research at universities and research institutions in the United States.” A federal judge recently halted the cuts. Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and director of the Food Is Medicine Institute at Tufts University, critiques the safety standards and processes for food additives in the U.S. “It shouldn’t be that we’re sure they cause harm before we remove them; it should be we’re sure they’re safe before we put them in food,” Mozaffarian says.  He adds that artificial dyes have no nutritional benefit. “If a food needs a food dye, if it’s that unappetizing and that unnatural, maybe we shouldn’t be eating it all,” Mozaffarian says. “That’s probably the biggest question: why do we need food dyes at all? That highlights the fact that these are probably subpar foods, subpar ingredients, and we shouldn’t need to make foods look fake to eat them.” Mozaffarian suggests that research points to a lack of healthy foods, rather than excessive consumption of harmful foods, as the primary threat to Americans’ health within the food system. He identifies the overall intake of as the second major issue, but views food additives like dyes as less significant, suggesting that factors such as the loss of food structure during processing, which leads to rapid and unnatural digestion, likely have a greater impact. He cites as an example, which contains Red 40, Yellow 5 and 6, and Blue 1. “If we took the dye out, they’re still Froot Loops,” Mozaffarian says. “It’s a problem, but it’s not the biggest problem.”

Measles Surges in Texas and New Mexico, Approaching 300 Cases: Key Details

The measles outbreaks in West Texas and New Mexico have grown to almost 300 cases, and regrettably, two unvaccinated individuals have died due to complications from the measles. Measles stems from a highly infectious airborne virus, easily transmissible through breathing, sneezing, or coughing by an infected person. Vaccination can prevent it, leading to its elimination in the U.S. since 2000. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Friday that the number of confirmed measles cases in the U.S. has exceeded that of 2024. Here’s what you should know about measles in the U.S. How many measles cases are there in Texas and New Mexico? Texas health officials reported 36 new cases of measles since the prior Tuesday, bringing the state's total to 259 on Friday. Hospitalizations increased by five, reaching a total of 34. The outbreak has now reached two additional counties: Cochran in West Texas, reporting six cases, and Lamar in Northeast Texas, with four cases. New Mexico health authorities announced two new cases on Friday, raising the state's total to 35. The majority of these cases are concentrated in Lea County, where two individuals are hospitalized, while Eddy County reports two cases. Oklahoma's state health department communicated two probable cases of measles on Tuesday, linking them to the outbreaks in West Texas and New Mexico. In Texas, a school-aged child succumbed to measles last month, and New Mexico recorded its first death related to measles in an adult during the previous week. Where else is measles showing up in the U.S.? Confirmed measles cases have surfaced in Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines an outbreak as three or more related cases — and in 2025, three clusters met the criteria for outbreaks. Within the U.S., cases and outbreaks are typically linked to individuals who contracted the illness while abroad. This can then proliferate, particularly in communities characterized by low vaccination coverage. In 2019, the U.S. documented 1,274 cases, nearly losing its measles-eliminated status. Do you need an MMR booster? The most effective strategy to prevent measles is through vaccination with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. It's recommended that children receive their first dose between 12 and 15 months of age, followed by a second dose between 4 and 6 years of age. Individuals at elevated risk of infection who received the shots many years prior might consider a booster, particularly if residing in an outbreak area, according to Scott Weaver of the Global Virus Network. This includes family members cohabitating with someone infected with measles or those with underlying medical conditions, making them vulnerable to respiratory ailments. The CDC indicates that adults with “presumptive evidence of immunity” generally do not require measles vaccinations at this time. The criteria involve written documentation of adequate vaccination earlier in life, lab confirmation of past infection, or being born before 1957, when most individuals were likely naturally infected. A doctor can request an MMR titer, a lab test, to assess your levels of measles antibodies, but health experts don’t always advise this approach, and insurance coverage can differ. According to the CDC, getting another MMR shot presents no harm if there are concerns about declining immunity. Individuals with documentation of receiving a live measles vaccine in the 1960s do not need revaccination. However, those immunized before 1968 with an ineffective "killed" virus measles vaccine should receive at least one dose of vaccine. This includes individuals uncertain about the type of vaccine they received. What are the symptoms of measles? Measles initially infects the respiratory system before spreading throughout the body, triggering a high fever, runny nose, cough, red, watery eyes, and a rash. The rash typically manifests three to five days after initial symptoms, starting as flat red spots on the face before spreading down to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet. The CDC notes that fever can exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit when the rash appears. Although most children recover from measles, infection can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, blindness, brain swelling, and death. How can you treat measles? There’s no specific treatment for measles. Doctors typically focus on alleviating symptoms, averting complications, and maintaining patient comfort. Why do vaccination rates matter? In communities that maintain high vaccination rates—above 95%—diseases like measles struggle to spread easily. This concept is known as “herd immunity.” Unfortunately, childhood vaccination rates have decreased nationwide since the pandemic, and increasing numbers of parents are seeking religious or personal conscience waivers to exempt their children from mandatory vaccinations. The U.S. experienced a surge in measles cases in 2024, including an outbreak in Chicago that affected more than 60 people. —AP Science Writer Laura Ungar contributed to this report.

Legal Analysts Weigh In on Trump Administration’s EPA Deregulation Push

EPA chief Lee Zeldin recently announced 31 initiatives aimed at reversing several key environmental regulations. These include re-evaluating limits on carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, relaxing vehicle emission standards designed to promote EV adoption, and challenging the 2009 "endangerment finding" that identified greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane as public health threats. The EPA has hailed this as "the most significant deregulation in U.S. history." However, legal experts view this as a stark departure from the EPA's original mission to protect human health and the environment. Michael Burger of Columbia University's Sabin Center for Climate Change Law describes it as "an all-out assault on climate regulation and environmental and public health protections." Experts caution that the announcement doesn't automatically grant the EPA the authority to implement these proposed rollbacks. Nikki Reisch of the Center for International Environmental Law emphasizes that agencies cannot take actions that directly contradict their core mandate and purpose. While administrations have some leeway in enforcing regulations, Reisch points out that completely repealing them is a more complex process. "Simply announcing these changes doesn't alter existing laws protecting clean air and water, and public health," she states. To repeal a statute, the EPA must follow the Administrative Procedure Act, which requires publishing notices of proposed and final rules and providing ample opportunity for public comment. Reisch highlights that the agency must clearly explain its intentions and reasoning. It can't simply ignore public feedback and proceed without addressing concerns. This public input is a crucial avenue for signaling the importance of certain issues to the agency. The agency must also support its proposals with scientific evidence. One major proposed change is reconsidering the 2009 finding that greenhouse gas emissions endanger public health—a finding that has underpinned much of the EPA's work over the past 15 years. To overturn this finding, the EPA would need to demonstrate that the scientific evidence is incorrect, effectively disproving a globally accepted fact. Greenhouse gas pollutants degrade air quality, contributing to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Burger asserts that the EPA would need to prove the original determination about greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change and endangering public health was flawed or lacked sufficient scientific basis. He argues that there is no basis for this, given the clear science and global consensus. Experts predict that any attempts to roll back regulations will face legal challenges and are unlikely to succeed in court, given the scientific evidence against the agency's proposals. However, this process could take time, potentially allowing the administration or its corporate allies to pursue their own interests in the interim. Yale University environmental law professor Daniel Esty suggests that the administration may be counting on the lengthy litigation process. By disregarding prior regulations while a challenge is underway, they may be able to achieve most of their objectives.

Flaws in Europe’s New Military Buildup Plan

` tags. `` The Trump Administration's Ukraine peace initiative—which recently proposed a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine and Russia—has triggered alarm in European capitals. They fear the U.S. might abandon its NATO allies, making it crucial for them to defend themselves against Russia. While some European rearmament is beneficial, a hasty and panicked approach risks decisions that could weaken European security and become unsustainable due to high costs. Firstly, European nations must determine spending levels and procurement strategies. The proposed sums are substantial, with leading governments advocating for military spending increases to reach a target amount. Some analysts have suggested even higher figures, and Trump has also mentioned significant increases. E.U. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has highlighted the immediate need for a considerable investment to bolster defense capabilities, with expectations of further allocations. Europe faces two primary dangers. The first is gearing rapid rearmament towards deploying a large military force to Ukraine, aiming to secure a peace agreement and, if necessary, combat Russia. This scenario is unlikely and inadvisable, despite apparent interest in London, Paris, and Kyiv. Russia has consistently rejected Western troops in Ukraine, and the Trump Administration has declined to support such a force. Consequently, this force would need to confront Russia—a nuclear power—without U.S. assistance. A majority in almost every European country are hesitant, and deploying such a force would require almost all of the U.K., France, and Germany's deployable forces, leaving Poland and the Baltic States vulnerable. The European rearmament drive is partly fueled by concerns that Russia might test NATO by engaging in aggressive actions. However, as David Ignatius noted in the Washington Post, European leaders express such deep anxiety about a potential attack that they are considering sending troops to Ukraine. This action could offer Russia an opportunity to "test" them with reduced risk and greater potential gains. The second major error would be to follow the U.S. model of recent decades by investing heavily in limited numbers of advanced weapons platforms such as fighter jets, tanks and warships. Instead, cheaper weapons like drones; anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles; howitzers and ammunition; and landmines have proven vital in the Ukraine conflict. The source of these weapons is another concern. The Trump Administration, like previous administrations, has urged Europe to purchase American arms. However, France and several other European governments maintain that rearmament should prioritize European-made weapons, seeking public support by framing it as a program for industrial development. Even in the best-case scenario, this will take time. Disagreements are already surfacing. Poland, along with the Baltic states, urgently wants to strengthen its forces with readily available weapons, rather than waiting for European options. The weakness of Europe’s military industry stems largely from the challenges of coordinating and integrating production across different nations. For genuine integration, each nation would need to relinquish parts of its existing industries, with some potentially giving up nearly everything. These discussions will be incredibly difficult. Fortunately, there is time, as a Russian attack on another NATO member remains unlikely in the near future, considering its experiences in Ukraine and a rational analysis of Russian motivations. This allows for a deliberate and thoughtful strategy tailored to Europe's true defense and industrial needs. There is a growing consensus that modern military technology favors defense. The Ukrainians stalled virtually the entire Russian army that invaded in February 2022, and have fought subsequent Russian attacks to a standstill, not with tanks and fighter jets, but huge numbers of cheap drones, anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles, 155 mm howitzers, and landmines (with of course critical help from U.S. intelligence). Without massive new spending, Germany has already sharply increased its output of 155 mm shells, France can manufacture more man-portable anti-aircraft missiles, and European industry overall can produce large quantities of drones. This will allow Europe to deter future Russian aggression and to provide sufficient long-term military aid to Ukraine, ensuring that any renewed assault would be extremely costly and dangerous for Russia. The final reason for European governments to exercise caution relates to the implications for European unity and other crucial areas of government activity. Italy and Spain, located far from Russia and facing migrant crises across the Mediterranean, do not perceive their core interests as threatened by Moscow. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated that “we will have to prioritize defense over other stuff,” but this “other stuff” includes essential investments in infrastructure and social welfare programs necessary for domestic stability.

Duterte Appears at ICC for the First Time Since Arrest

Rodrigo Duterte, who was the President of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, made his initial appearance at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague this Friday. The hearing marks the beginning of a potentially long trial concerning crimes against humanity charges against him, related to his leadership of a severe anti-drug campaign in the Philippines. Human rights groups there claim the campaign resulted in numerous deaths. Duterte, 79, participated in the hearing via video link. Judge Iulia Motoc, who presided over the hearing, acknowledged his “long journey with considerable time difference.” His legal representative, Salvador Medialdea, was physically present in the courtroom. Medialdea stated to the court that Duterte’s transfer to The Hague was "degrading" and described it as "a simple kidnapping." Duterte, the first former Asian head of state to appear before the court, arrived in The Hague after being arrested in Manila on March 11 upon his arrival from Hong Kong. Philippine authorities immediately transported Duterte to the Netherlands. Since his arrival, he has been held in the ICC’s detention center in Scheveningen, a coastal area. Judge Motoc announced that the hearing to confirm the charges is scheduled for September 23. In a video shared shortly after midnight local time on Thursday, Duterte appeared to accept responsibility for the actions of the police and military involved in his anti-drug campaign. He also acknowledged that "this would be a long legal proceedings." The ICC has faced criticism regarding the slow pace of its trials and its history of few convictions since its establishment in 2002. However, Duterte’s critics, including those who lost family members during anti-drug operations, are satisfied with his court appearance. The National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers stated that Duterte’s arrest and surrender exemplify "how persons suspected of crimes are to be arrested and taken into custody by authorities," procedures that "victims of the ‘war on drugs’ have barely enjoyed." Duterte’s aggressive anti-drug efforts in the Philippines led to a high number of deaths. The harsh tactics date back to his time as mayor of Davao City in the southern Philippines. In October, during a Senate hearing, Duterte admitted to having his own "" comprised of "gangsters," and that he to “encourage” drug suspects to fight back so officers could justify killing them. “Duterte is lucky he has due process, but my child who was killed did not have due process,” Emily Soriano stated at a press conference in Manila. Soriano’s teenage son, Angelito, was killed in anti-drug operations in 2016. “He sleeps in a nice bed, while my child is rotting in the cemetery,” she added. Randy delos Santos, uncle of Kian delos Santos, a teenager killed in August 2017 during an anti-drug operation in Manila that became a prominent case, told : “Our former President is fortunate because he is given the chance to defend himself… My nephew was never brought to court. Many accusations were thrown. Then he was killed.” stated, “Good for [Duterte] that he was just arrested by police, while our relatives were killed on the spot.” Her husband was killed by unidentified individuals in 2017. Outside the ICC, anti-Duterte protesters voiced their support for his detention, with some holding signs saying, “Hold Duterte accountable and bring him to trial!” Meanwhile, pro-Duterte protesters chanted his name, calling to “Bring him home!” Duterte’s legal team in the Philippines and his supporters have questioned the legality of his arrest. Some have even . However, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that the Philippines “followed every single necessary procedure” in implementing the ICC’s arrest warrant and complied with its commitments to international bodies. The Marcos and Duterte families, previously political allies, had last year.

Hamas Claims Agreement to Free U.S.-Israeli Hostage and Return Bodies of Four Other Dual Citizens

JERUSALEM — Hamas announced on Friday that they have accepted a mediated proposal to release one living American-Israeli hostage, Edan Alexander, and the remains of four other dual-national hostages who died while in captivity. This announcement coincides with ongoing discussions in Qatar aimed at facilitating the next stage of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire. The specific timing of the release of Alexander, a soldier, and the recovery of the four bodies was not immediately disclosed by the militant group in Gaza. Confirmation from other parties involved in the agreement was also pending. Alexander, 19 years old at the time, was captured from his base along the Gaza border in southern Israel during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which initiated the ongoing conflict. The identities of the negotiating parties remain unclear. The United States, through its hostage envoy Steve Witkoff, has been advocating for a proposal to extend the truce and implement a limited exchange of hostages for prisoners. Following Hamas's statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened security consultations with his top advisors, according to an anonymous Israeli official. The initial phase of the ceasefire concluded two weeks prior. The White House recently revealed that American officials have been in direct communication with Hamas officials, a departure from the U.S.'s longstanding policy. This announcement was met with a sharp response from Netanyahu's office. The connection between these talks and Hamas's announcement regarding the American hostage remains uncertain. In a separate statement, Hamas official Husam Badran reiterated the group's dedication to fully implementing the ceasefire agreement, cautioning that any deviation by Israel would nullify the negotiations. The ceasefire has brought a pause to the most intense fighting between Israel and Hamas to date. The first phase resulted in the release of 25 living hostages and the remains of eight others, in exchange for the release of almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Israeli forces have retreated to buffer zones within Gaza, allowing hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to return to northern Gaza for the first time since the start of the war. Additionally, hundreds of aid trucks entered daily until Israel halted the supplies. Israel has been urging Hamas to release half of the remaining hostages in exchange for an extension of the initial phase and a commitment to negotiate a lasting truce. Hamas is believed to hold 24 living hostages and the remains of 35 others. Two weeks ago, Israel suspended all supplies to Gaza and its over 2 million residents, pressuring Hamas to agree. The militant group warned that this action would negatively impact the remaining hostages. Hamas seeks to initiate negotiations on the more challenging second phase of the ceasefire, which includes the release of all remaining hostages from Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the establishment of a lasting peace. The militant group claims that, due to the supply cutoff, approximately 80% of Gaza's population has lost access to food sources, with aid distribution suspended and markets running out of supplies, while 90% lack access to clean drinking water. In Jerusalem, around 80,000 Muslim worshippers attended Friday prayers at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound for the second week of Ramadan, according to the Islamic Trust. Israel is implementing strict access controls, permitting only men over 55 and women over 50 from the occupied territories to enter for prayers. "The conditions are extremely difficult," stated Yousef Badeen, a Palestinian who traveled from Hebron in the southern West Bank to Jerusalem. "We hope they will open it permanently." Hamas has accused Israel of escalating a "religious war" against Palestinians through its restrictions at Al-Aqsa mosque, characterizing it as the "systematic targeting of Muslim religious practices." —Associated Press writer David Rising in Bangkok contributed to this report. ```

Holi, Hindu Festival of Colors, Celebrated by Millions

NEW DELHI — On Friday, Holi, the Hindu festival of colors, was celebrated by millions across South Asia. Revelers smeared each other with vibrant powders, danced to celebratory music, and enjoyed traditional sweets prepared for the occasion. This exuberant spring festival involves Hindus engaging in a colorful celebration marking the end of winter and the victory of good over evil. Holi is a national holiday in India and a two-day event in Nepal, commencing on Thursday. It is also observed in other South Asian nations and among the Indian diaspora. Rooted in Hindu mythology, Holi commemorates the divine love between the Hindu god Krishna and Radha, his consort, and symbolizes renewal and rejuvenation. Throughout India, people, often clad in white attire, celebrated by throwing colored powder at one another. Children on rooftops and balconies tossed water balloons filled with colored pigments at passersby. Groups of young men used water guns to playfully chase people in parks and on streets, while others danced to loud music in the streets. In New Delhi, a rainbow-colored haze filled the air around a park as friends splashed each other with colored powder and water. "It’s time for fun and frolic," said Krisha Bedi, a lawyer whose face was covered in red, green, and blue. In some areas, marigolds, roses, and jasmine petals were thrown instead of colored powder. Amidst large celebrations in Ahmedabad, a city in western India, thousands gathered at a temple and were sprayed with colored water from large pipes while swaying to traditional Gujarati music and clapping. Food and beverages are central to the festivities. Vendors across India sold thandai, a light green drink made with milk, cardamom, and dried fruit, and gujia, a flaky, fried pastry filled with milk curds, nuts, and dried fruit. Another Holi tradition is bhang, a local drink made with cannabis and consumed with milk or water. This drink is associated with Hinduism, particularly Lord Shiva, and is enjoyed during other religious festivals in the region. Its consumption is legal under Indian law and sold at government-licensed shops. In many parts of India, large bonfires are lit the night before the festival to represent the destruction of evil and the triumph of good. Families gather around these fires to sing, dance, and pray to Hindu deities. In two northern towns, hundreds of women celebrated last week by playfully hitting teasing men with wooden sticks as part of a ritual called "Lathmar Holi," or Stick Holi.

Are Republicans Forsaking Conservative Principles by Turning Away from Ukraine?

` tags. ` The United States' foreign policy is undergoing a significant and potentially dangerous shift away from supporting Ukraine and toward Russia in their ongoing conflict. This shift, driven by the Trump Administration and its allies, could alter the balance of power in Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II, with major and potentially disastrous implications for American interests. However, the changing values within the U.S. that this shift reveals are equally, if not more, concerning. The Trump Administration abstained from a UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and affirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Additionally, President Donald Trump hosted President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office. Although the Trump Administration recently announced it will provide military aid to Ukraine, the dangers of leaning towards Russia remain. Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss Russia’s repeated ceasefire violations during a private meeting at the Kremlin on Thursday evening. This change represents a victory for one faction within the deeply divided Republican Party. Having witnessed this struggle firsthand in 2019 regarding military aid to Ukraine, I understand the stakes involved. During the first Trump Administration, as the senior civil servant overseeing defense, intelligence, and veterans’ programs at the Office of Management and Budget, I was asked to approve a hold on military aid to Ukraine, similar to the one recently imposed by Trump. At that time, thanks in part to principled conservatives within the Administration and Congress, the Administration eventually released the aid after details of the hold began to surface, ultimately leading to the President’s impeachment. This time, however, key political allies of Trump, who have long presented themselves as staunch conservatives, are embracing the shift away from Ukraine and toward Russia. For example, while House Speaker Mike Johnson claims it is “” to suggest Republicans support Putin, his actions against Zelensky are revealing. This situation involves more than just abandoning Ukraine for Russia; it signifies an acceptance of unprovoked aggression and tyranny, horrific war crimes, and a betrayal of conservative principles by politicians who are merely "Conservative" Republicans In Name Only (CRINOs). Not long ago, these CRINOs firmly upheld conservative principles. Congressman, now House Speaker Johnson, has highlighted seven core tenets of conservatism, including individual freedom, peace through strength, and human dignity. He emphasizes the significance of America’s “moral leadership in an increasingly dangerous world,” noting that “weakness invites aggression.” Republicans widely promoted these values, including President Trump during his first term. One only needs to look at President Trump’s 2017 National Security Strategy to see this in action. In it, Trump pledged to pursue “a world of strong, sovereign, and independent nations, each with its own cultures and dreams” and promised to “never lose sight of our values and their capacity to inspire, uplift, and renew.” Trump’s strategy asserted that “the revisionist powers of China and Russia” aimed to “shape a world antithetical to U.S. values and interests” with the goal of “weaken[ing] U.S. influence in the world and divid[ing] us from our allies and partners.” Furthermore, the Trump strategy argued, “Russia is using subversive measures to weaken the credibility of America’s commitment to Europe, undermine transatlantic unity, and weaken European institutions and governments. With its invasions of Georgia and Ukraine, Russia demonstrated its willingness to violate the sovereignty of states in the region.” Now, President Trump praises Russian President Putin, calling him a “” and describes Ukrainian President Zelensky as a “.” His Administration temporarily halted military aid to Ukraine and suspended vital intelligence sharing, despite Russia's ongoing deadly strikes. Many CRINOs have essentially echoed Russian propaganda, refusing to acknowledge Russia's sole responsibility for initiating the war and failing to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty. The Trump Administration has effectively adopted a strategy of appeasement toward Russia, and too many Republicans in Congress, who once championed the ardent defense of democracy and vehemently opposed tyrants globally, have now embraced their own policy of appeasing the President. Republicans may argue they are not abandoning Ukraine or their values by seeking a peace agreement acceptable to Russia. However, any agreement that fails to restore and protect Ukraine's territorial integrity constitutes such an abandonment. To conserve means to protect from harm or destruction. We need true conservatives to safeguard unalienable rights, fundamental values, and America’s moral leadership abroad. We also need true conservatives, many of whom profess adherence to Christian values, to uphold their values at home for reasons extending beyond foreign policy. Republican leaders' adoption of talking points on Ukraine that echo Russia is just one example of how abandoning values abroad threatens democracy at home. The ninth commandment instructs us not to bear false witness. As Speaker Johnson’s own conservative principle of human dignity aptly states, “every person should be measured only by the content of their character.” What is the character of those who bear false witness and favor Russia’s tyrannical lies over Ukrainians’ unalienable rights? Ukrainians are fighting for their lives, their liberty, and what should be our shared values of standing up to unprovoked invasions and subversive assaults by Russia. It is crucial for America’s vital interests that we support the Ukrainians in their fight. As the failures of appeasement have demonstrated in the past, failing to continue supporting Ukraine now could embolden not only Russia’s aggression in Europe but also China’s aggression toward Taiwan and in the South China Sea. Equally concerning are the consequences of self-proclaimed conservatives abandoning the values they claim to cherish. When our political leaders claim to uphold a set of values while acting to undermine them, we have truly lost a key pillar of what has made America great. America needs true conservatives, not CRINOs, both at home and abroad.

Study: Hysteroscopic Polypectomy on Egg Retrieval Day Doesn’t Hurt Implantation

Dr. Megha Khanna, a leading fertility expert, has released a new, groundbreaking study indicating that performing a hysteroscopic polypectomy on the same day as egg retrieval does not have a negative effect on implantation rates.Kolkata, West Bengal Mar 13, 2025 – Dr. Megha Khanna's recent study reveals that performing a hysteroscopic polypectomy on the day of egg retrieval, followed by embryo transfer on day 3 or 5, does not negatively impact implantation rates. These findings could lead to changes in fertility treatment approaches by providing a new perspective on the timing of procedures used in assisted reproductive technology (ART). Dr. Megha Khanna organized an awareness program to educate the general public, especially housewives, about fertility and embryos. She is a notable figure in the field. Hysteroscopic polypectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove uterine polyps, which are benign growths that can interfere with conception. Polyps can create an unfavorable environment in the uterus, potentially leading to infertility or failed pregnancies. While polyp removal is often done to improve fertility, the timing of the surgery in relation to other procedures, such as egg retrieval and embryo transfer, has been widely debated. Egg retrieval and embryo transfer are critical steps in in vitro fertilization (IVF), and their timing can impact the chances of a successful pregnancy. Many fertility experts have been wary of performing a hysteroscopic polypectomy too close to egg retrieval or embryo transfer because of concerns that it could interfere with the embryo's ability to implant in the uterus. Dr. Megha Khanna's study challenges this belief. She and her team conducted a thorough analysis of multiple IVF cycles in which hysteroscopic polypectomy was performed on the day of egg retrieval. The study found that performing the polypectomy did not significantly harm the chances of successful implantation when embryo transfer occurred on day 3 or day 5. In fact, implantation rates were similar to those in cycles where polypectomy was performed at different times. Dr. Khanna explains, "Many worry that removing uterine polyps too close to egg retrieval or embryo transfer could disrupt the process and lower the chances of successful implantation. Our results offer reassurance to both patients and fertility specialists. They suggest that performing hysteroscopic polypectomy on the same day as egg retrieval is safe and can still lead to positive outcomes." The study also emphasized that patients who had hysteroscopic polypectomy had significantly higher pregnancy rates than those who did not have the procedure. This highlights the importance of removing polyps before IVF to improve the likelihood of a successful pregnancy. Dr. Khanna's study offers valuable insights to the fertility community, particularly for patients who require both egg retrieval and polyp removal. Traditionally, many fertility specialists would schedule these procedures separately to prevent potential complications. However, Dr. Khanna's findings could help streamline the process, giving patients a more efficient treatment timeline without compromising the chances of success. Dr. Khanna adds, "I believe this research can make IVF more accessible and less stressful for couples trying to conceive. By removing polyps early in the treatment cycle, we can improve fertility outcomes without unnecessary delays, ultimately helping patients achieve their dream of starting a family." This study sets the stage for further research into the optimal timing of fertility treatments and how different procedures can be combined to maximize the chances of a successful pregnancy. It offers hope for couples facing infertility and those who have experienced repeated implantation failures. Dr. Megha Khanna is highly regarded for her expertise in reproductive medicine and has assisted numerous couples in their journey to parenthood. Her latest research reinforces her position at the forefront of innovative solutions in fertility care.
