Bad Bunny Endorses Kamala Harris After Trump Rally Comment About Puerto Rico
Bad Bunny voiced his support for Kamala Harris on Sunday by sharing a video of the Democratic presidential nominee shortly after a comedian at a Trump rally made derogatory remarks about Latinos and referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage,” provoking outrage among artists and some Hispanic Republicans. Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is one of the most popular artists of the moment. The video Bad Bunny shared with his 45 million Instagram followers shows Harris stating “there’s so much at stake in this election for Puerto Rican voters and for Puerto Rico.” A representative of the artist confirmed that Bad Bunny is backing Harris. Bad Bunny’s endorsement came shortly after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made the offensive remarks about Puerto Rico. Subsequently, Hinchcliffe made another remark, claiming “these Latinos, they love making babies” and suggested they don’t use the pull-out method of birth control. Harris’ campaign quickly condemned the comments about Puerto Rico, but they were also criticized by Angel Cintron, the head of the GOP on the island, and Republican U.S. Rep. Carlos A. Giménez, who represents parts of Miami and has participated in recent Trump events. Salazar wrote: “Disgusted by @TonyHinchcliffe’s racist comment calling Puerto Rico a ‘floating island of garbage.’ This rhetoric does not reflect GOP values. Puerto Rico sent 48,000+ soldiers to Vietnam, with over 345 Purple Hearts awarded. This bravery deserves respect. Educate yourself!” Trump campaign spokeswoman Danielle Alvarez issued a statement saying “this joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.” Luis Fonsi, a Puerto Rican artist known for the hit song “Despacito,” took to Instagram and wrote “going down this racist path ain’t it.” “We are not OK with this constant hate,” he wrote in a message shared on Instagram. “It’s been abundantly clear that these people have no respect for us.” Ricky Martin, who previously endorsed Harris, was also offended by the comment and said “that’s what they think of us,” on Instagram. In showing his support, Bad Bunny repeatedly shared another portion of the clip featuring Harris, where she says “I will never forget what Donald Trump did and what he did not do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and a competent leader.” The 30-year-old Puerto Rican reggaeton artist, known for hit songs such as “Dakiti” and “Titi Me Preguntó,” has won three Grammy Awards. He was the most streamed artist on Spotify in 2020, 2021 and 2022, and was only surpassed by Taylor Swift in 2023. He was named Artist of the Year by Apple Music in 2022. The Puerto Rican vote is significant in Pennsylvania, which is considered a highly contested swing state in the 2024 election. Other Puerto Rican singers such as Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony had previously voiced their support for Harris. Trump has also garnered support from other popular stars from the island such as Anuel AA and Nicky Jam. Bad Bunny has been vocal in his criticism of Puerto Rico’s electric system, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Maria. In a 2022 music video for his song “El Apagon,” the artist called out the company Luma Energy, responsible for transmission and distribution, for the constant power outages that plague the island. One of his most recent songs, “Una Velita,” is also a protest against the government’s response following Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico in 2017. A year after the storm, public health experts estimated that nearly 3,000 people perished due to the effects of Hurricane Maria. However, Trump, whose efforts to aid the island territory’s recovery have been consistently criticized, repeatedly questioned that number, claiming it rose “like magic.” His visit to the island after the hurricane sparked controversy, particularly when he tossed paper towels at victims. His administration released $13 billion in assistance years later, just weeks before the 2020 presidential election. And a federal government watchdog found that officials hindered an investigation into delays in aid delivery. Bad Bunny also shared a portion of the clip where Harris states that Trump “abandoned the island, tried to block aid after back-to-back devastating hurricanes and offered nothing more than paper towels and insults.” Harris visited a Puerto Rican restaurant in North Philadelphia earlier on Sunday and unveiled her policy related to the island, stating she wants to create a task force to attract investment for fixing the electrical grid. And Trump is scheduled to visit Allentown, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, where over half of the population is Hispanic, with a majority being of Puerto Rican descent. In 2020, Bad Bunny allowed the Biden campaign to use one of his hits “Pero Ya No” in a TV ad.

The Singapore fit report highlights growth in the Education sector and a surge in demand for Marketing & Communications professionals. The tracker reveals an overall year-on-year (YoY) decline of 5% in hiring activity across sectors, as the index dropped from 116 in September 2023 to 110 in September 2024. However, a month-on-month (MoM) analysis indicates a notable 7% surge, with an index of 103 recorded in August 2024.Commenting on Singapore's job trends for September 2024, Sekhar Garisa, CEO, foundit, said, "The September 2024 foundit Insights Tracker reveals significant shifts in Singapore's job market. Despite a yearly decline, the recent month-on-month growth is a promising sign of recovery. As businesses adapt to changing market conditions, hiring priorities are evolving. Marketing roles are becoming increasingly important as companies focus on data-driven strategies and personalised customer experiences to boost brand engagement and drive growth."Education sector leads industry growth, while Retail/Trade and Logistics and Import/Export sectors show improvementsThe Education sector has emerged as the frontrunner in e-recruitment activity among all monitored industries, showing a 4% MoM growth in September 2024. This growth is fueled by investments from both the government and private sector.Following the Education sector, the Retail/Trade and Logistics sector and the Import/Export sector both showed positive trends with a 3% MoM growth each in September 2024.Several sectors face challenges with declining or stagnant hiring trendsWhile some sectors showed growth, others faced challenges in the job market. Why Donald Trump’s Medical Records Are Under Scrutiny
As the calls grow for Donald Trump to release his medical records, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris criticized her opponent once again during a rally in Houston, Texas, on Friday. She highlighted the legal battle of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and other Texas right-wing leaders to access the private medical records of patients who seek out-of-state abortions. “Please do see the irony,” Harris said. “On the one hand, Donald Trump won’t let anyone see his medical records. I gave up mine! And on the other hand, they want to get their hands on your medical records.” In Harris’ report, physician Joshua R. Simmons said the Vice President “possesses the physical and mental resiliency required to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency.” Soon after the Harris campaign released the report on Oct. 12, over 200 doctors signed an open letter, calling on Trump to release his medical records. The letter, written and organized by the group Doctors for Harris, argued that the former President should have similar transparency “given his advancing age.” “The American people deserve to have confidence in their elected officials’ mental and physical capacity to do the jobs they’ve elected them to do,” they wrote. “Trump ought to be going above and beyond to provide transparency on his physical health and mental acuity, given his advancing age.” This issue has become more prominent for Trump, ever since President Joe Biden, 81, released his medical report on July 21, and Trump, 78, was left running against a then 59-year-old Harris. Though it is often customary for presidential candidates to share medical records, there’s no law that requires Trump to release his records. According to Jeff Gulati, a political science professor at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass., the more that Trump refuses to do what Democrats are asking of him, the more his base supports him. “It’s really just a matter of public opinion now, and he’s gotten away with not sharing it in two consecutive elections,” Gulati tells TIME. “So there’s just, you know, no real incentive for him to release them now.” The most recent medical report publicly shared by Trump was featured in a Facebook post, which included a screenshot of a letter from Dr. Bruce Aronwald, sharing little detail but saying the former President was in “excellent health.” In August, Trump said he would voluntarily share his medical records, but he has yet to do so. However, in October, he was questioned by reporters and asked about his medical records, Trump reportedly said the public already has enough information on his health. “Yeah, my health records—I’ve done five exams over the last four years. You’ve got them all,” he said. “I’ve given my health exams, I’ve also done cognitive tests twice and I’ve aced them.” If Trump is elected in November, he will be the oldest U.S. President by the end of his term—and a significant concern coming from the doctors’ open letter centered around the Republican candidate’s age and mental acuity. This is the same scrutiny that befell Trump’s former opponent. Meanwhile, Gulati says the Harris campaign needs to “run a fine line of not being seen as ageist” when discussing Trump’s medical records. “It’s obviously a touchy subject for the Democrats,” he says. “Age and health are obviously related, but Harris can’t really go there.” On the day Harris released her medical records, the Trump campaign defended Trump’s own records in a press release. “President Trump has voluntarily released updates from his personal physician, as well as detailed reports from Dr. Ronny Jackson who treated him after the first assassination attempt. All have concluded he is in perfect and excellent health to be Commander in Chief,” said Trump Campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung. Trump’s medical team has remained tight-lipped over information about the former President’s medical records after the assassination attempt or the extent of his ear wound, which he obtained during the assassination attempt at his campaign event on July 13 in Pennsylvania. Republican representative and physician Ronny Jackson of Texas did release a statement on July 20, stating that the ear wound was caused by a gunshot, and that the wound was “beginning to granulate and heal properly.” Jackson released a follow-up statement, providing an update on Trump’s ear wound.

Daylight Saving Time Ends: Health Effects to Consider
The upside: You'll enjoy an extra hour of sleep. The downside: The sun will set early for the next several months in the U.S. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time next Sunday, Nov. 3. This means you should set your clock back an hour before bed. Standard time will remain in effect until March 9, when we'll once again "spring forward" with the return of daylight saving time. The transition to standard time is usually easier on the body. However, it might still take some time to adjust your sleep habits. Additionally, leaving work in the dark or exercising while there's still light may be challenging. Some individuals with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked to shorter days and less sunlight during fall and winter, may also experience difficulties. Several health organizations, including the American Medical Association and American Academy of Sleep Medicine, have advocated for eliminating time switches. They argue that sticking with standard time aligns better with the sun and human biology. do not observe daylight saving time. For those who do — mainly in Europe and North America — the date for switching clocks varies. Two states — Arizona and Hawaii — don't change and stay on standard time. Here's what to know about the twice-yearly time change ritual. How the body reacts to light The brain has a master clock that's set by exposure to sunlight and darkness. This circadian rhythm is a roughly 24-hour cycle that regulates when we feel sleepy and when we're more alert. These patterns change with age, explaining why early-rising children often become hard-to-wake teenagers. Morning light resets the rhythm. As evening approaches, levels of a hormone called melatonin begin to rise, inducing drowsiness. Excessive light in the evening — like the extra hour from daylight saving time — delays this surge, causing the cycle to become out of sync. This circadian clock influences more than just sleep. It also affects factors like heart rate, blood pressure, stress hormones, and metabolism. How do time changes affect sleep? Even a one-hour shift in the clock can disrupt sleep schedules — especially since work and school start times remain constant. This is concerning because many people are already sleep-deprived. Roughly 1 in 3 U.S. adults sleep less than the recommended seven-plus hours nightly, and over half of U.S. teenagers don't get the recommended eight-plus hours on weeknights. Sleep deprivation is linked to heart disease, cognitive decline, obesity, and numerous other health issues. How to prepare for the time change Some people try to prepare for a time change jolt by gradually adjusting their bedtime in the days leading up to the change. There are strategies to ease the adjustment, including getting more sunshine to help reset your circadian rhythm for healthy sleep. Will the U.S. ever get rid of the time change? Lawmakers occasionally propose eliminating the time change altogether. The most prominent recent attempt, a now-stalled bipartisan bill called the Sunshine Protection Act, proposes making daylight saving time permanent. However, health experts argue that standard time should be made permanent instead.
Michelle Obama Urges Men to Take Women’s Lives Seriously in Support of Kamala Harris
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Michelle Obama urged men to support Kamala Harris's bid to become America's first female president at a rally in Michigan on Saturday, warning that women's lives would be in danger if Donald Trump were to return to the White House. The former first lady described the assault on abortion rights as a precursor to dangerous restrictions on women's healthcare. Obama said some men might be tempted to vote for Trump due to their anger over the slow pace of progress, but "your rage does not exist in a vacuum." ”If we don’t get this election right, your wife, your daughter, your mother, we as women will become collateral damage to your rage,” Obama said. “So are you as men prepared to look into the eyes of the women and children you love and tell them you supported this assault on our safety?” The rally in Kalamazoo marked Obama's first campaign appearance since speaking at the Democratic National Convention over the summer, and her remarks were fervent and passionate in their support of Harris. “By every measure, she has demonstrated that she’s ready,” the former first lady said. “The real question is, as a country, are we ready for this moment?” Obama added, “Do not buy into the lies that we do not know who Kamala is or what she stands for. This is somebody who understands you, all of you.” Although Obama has been a reluctant campaigner over the years, she showed no hesitation on Saturday as her speech transitioned from political to personal. Obama said she fears for the country and finds it hard to understand why the presidential race remains close. “I lay awake at night wondering, ‘What in the world is going on?’” she said. Her voice filled with emotion, Obama spoke about the struggle for women to understand and care for their own bodies, whether it's their menstrual cycles or menopause. She also addressed the dangers of childbirth, where a split-second decision can determine the outcome of life or death for a mother and her baby. “I am asking y’all from the core of my being to take our lives seriously,” Obama pleaded. Harris took the stage after Obama and promised the crowd that she would prioritize their interests — unlike Trump, who she accused of only being concerned about himself. “There is a yearning in our country for a president who sees the people, not just looking in the mirror all the time, but sees the people, who gets you and who will fight for you,” she said. After the rally, Harris joined Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at Trak Houz Bar & Grill, where they enjoyed a locally brewed beer. “I want to have whatever she’s having,” Harris said. The politicians chatted and took photos with people at the bar. When they approached a group of young women, one of them became emotional. Before arriving in Kalamazoo, Harris visited a local doctor's office in Portage to discuss with healthcare providers and medical students the impact of abortion restrictions. One healthcare provider said they have patients traveling from other parts of the country with strict abortion limitations, and another expressed concern that individuals might be reluctant to practice in crucial areas of medicine due to fears of government interference. “We are looking at a health care crisis in America that is affecting people of every background and gender,” Harris told reporters before visiting the doctor’s office. Harris appeared with Beyoncé on Friday in Houston, and she campaigned with former President Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen on Thursday in Atlanta. This level of celebrity support surpasses anything that Trump, the Republican nominee, has managed to assemble this year. However, there's no guarantee that this will benefit Harris in the closely contested race for the White House. In 2016, Hillary Clinton lost to Trump despite generating excitement among her supporters with musical performances and Democratic allies. Trump dismissed Harris's attempt to utilize star power for her campaign. “Kamala is at a dance party with Beyoncé,” the former president said Friday in Traverse City, Michigan. Trump held a rally in Novi, a suburb of Detroit, on Saturday before a later event in State College, Pennsylvania. Saturday marked the first day of early in-person voting across Michigan. More than 1.4 million ballots have already been submitted, representing 20% of registered voters. When Clinton was running against Trump, Michelle Obama inspired Democrats with the slogan “when they go low, we go high.” But this year, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, she adopted a more pointed approach. She accused Trump of “doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better.” While Harris was with Obama in Michigan, President Joe Biden visited the Laborers’ International Union of North America in Pittsburgh. He mentioned that Harris once participated in a picket line with the United Auto Workers — “she has a backbone like a ramrod” — while Trump has undermined organized labor. “He views unions as getting in the way of the accumulation of wealth for individuals,” Biden said. “It’s in labor’s interest to defeat Donald Trump, more than any other race you’ve been in.” Biden's remarks to the predominantly male audience acknowledged the gender gap that has been a consistent element of this year's presidential race. Speaking on Trump, Biden said, “I’m just gonna say straight up, he’s a loser as a man.” He also asserted that women deserve greater opportunities than they have received in the past. “They can do anything any man can do, including be president of the United States of America,” Biden said.

Over 100 Dead or Missing After Flooding and Landslides in the Philippines
TALISAY, Philippines — The number of people killed or missing in massive flooding and landslides caused by Tropical Storm Trami in the Philippines has surpassed 100. The president stated on Saturday that numerous areas remained isolated, and people require rescue. Trami departed from the northwestern Philippines on Friday, resulting in at least 81 deaths and 34 missing persons, making it one of the deadliest and most destructive storms to hit the Southeast Asian archipelago this year, according to the government's disaster response agency. As reports arrive from previously isolated areas, the death toll is expected to rise. On Saturday, dozens of police officers, firefighters, and other emergency personnel, aided by three backhoes and sniffer dogs, searched for one of the last two missing villagers in the lakeside town of Talisay in Batangas province. A father, awaiting news about his missing 14-year-old daughter, wept as rescuers placed the remains in a black body bag. He followed police officers, who carried the body bag down a mud-strewn village alley to a police van, while a weeping resident approached him to offer condolences. The man expressed certainty that the remains belonged to his daughter, but authorities needed to conduct checks to confirm the identity of the villager discovered in the mound. In a nearby basketball gym at the town center, more than a dozen white coffins were arranged side by side, containing the remains of those found in the mounds of mud, boulders, and trees that cascaded down the steep slope of a wooded ridge in Talisay’s Sampaloc village on Thursday afternoon. President Ferdinand Marcos, who inspected another severely affected region southeast of Manila on Saturday, said the unusually heavy rainfall caused by the storm, including some areas receiving one to two months’ worth of rainfall in just 24 hours, overwhelmed flood controls in provinces battered by Trami. “The water was just too much,” Marcos told reporters. “We’re not done yet with our rescue work,” he said. “Our problem here, there are still many areas that remained flooded and could not be accessed even big trucks.” His administration, Marcos said, would plan to start work on a major flood control project that can meet the unprecedented threats posed by climate change. More than 4.2 million people were in the path of the storm, including nearly half a million, who mostly fled to more than 6,400 emergency shelters in several provinces, the government agency said. In an emergency cabinet meeting, Marcos expressed concerns regarding reports from government forecasters that the storm, the 11th to hit the Philippines this year, could make a U-turn next week as it is pushed back by high-pressure winds in the South China Sea. The storm was forecast to batter Vietnam over the weekend if it would not veer off course. The Philippine government shut down schools and government offices for the third day on Friday to keep millions of people safe on the main northern island of Luzon. Inter-island ferry services were also suspended, stranding thousands. Weather has cleared in many areas on Saturday, allowing cleanup work in most areas. Each year, about 20 storms and typhoons batter the Philippines, a Southeast Asian archipelago which lies between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest recorded tropical cyclones, left more than 7,300 people dead or missing and flattened entire villages.
James Earl Jones’ Voice: A Legacy of Pride and Exclusion at Michigan
As the Michigan Wolverines face off against the Michigan State Spartans this Saturday for the 117th time since their first game in 1898, a familiar voice will resonate throughout the largest college football stadium in the country: the voice of James Earl Jones. Though the renowned actor and U-M alumnus passed away on Sept. 9, his legacy, solidified by iconic films like Star Wars and The Lion King, continues to live on at every Wolverine home game in the Big House. Jones's professional, commanding, and precise voice embodies his pride in his alma mater. However, a look back at his undergraduate years serves as a reminder of the often contradictory moments of exclusion and inclusion experienced at universities like Michigan over the past eight decades. Jones grew up in the small, rural community of Dublin in western Michigan, approximately two hours north of Grand Rapids. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and, having overcome a stutter, graduated with 14 other students from Dickson Rural Agricultural High School. Inspired by his English teacher, the shy and quiet Jones took a test and earned a U-M Regents Alumni Scholarship. He traveled several hours north to Traverse City for the exam, where he was the only student of color in the room. Even as a teenager, Jones noticed that despite Michigan having a sizable Indigenous population, diversity was lacking among those selected to compete for its scholarships. Upon admission, Jones arrived at the University of Michigan in the fall of 1949 with aspirations of becoming a medical doctor, a dream his grandparents held for him. However, his limited high school education left him academically unprepared for the required pre-med courses. He struggled with his studies, particularly in chemistry and a mistaken enrollment in a senior-level composition class during his freshman year. Professors frequently belittled his work, with one using a spelling error to cruelly remark, “Why are you trying to be something you’re not? You’re just a dumb son of a bitch, and you don’t belong at this university.” Just a few years before the 1954 Brown v. Board Supreme Court case and a full decade before the Greensboro sit-ins, racist experiences in the late 1940s and early 1950s were not uncommon in the U.S. North, including at the University of Michigan. Unlike southern universities with extreme racial segregation policies that prohibited Black and white students from attending school together, the University of Michigan was among the first public universities to admit Black, Latino, Jewish, Catholic, and women students based on academic merit. Prior to 1950, the number of Black students at U-M and other northern universities was minimal. Largely accelerated by the GI Bill, the percentage of Black students accepted at historically white colleges and universities only grew from . Michigan was no exception: extraordinarily low numbers compared to total enrollment created an environment where Black students faced discrimination and social isolation. While not always overt violence, racist ideology and actions cloaked in the language of high academic standards inflicted deep wounds, particularly on first-generation Black students like Jones. Like the talented—but limited—number of Black musicians and actors in the postwar era who were given opportunities in the film and music industries, Jones found a sense of belonging—and his voice—in the Theater Department. For the 1953 spring semester production, Jones played the lead character Bret Charles in Deep Are the Roots. Forty years later, his professor, Claribel Baird Halstead, reminisced about her decision to keep him in the spotlight: “In those days audiences didn’t accept white people in Black roles and Black people in white roles…I deserve no credit except to have given him an opportunity to do it, ” This act of kindness from Halstead, however, was a small step in overcoming the other racialized encounters Jones faced in his career. For Jones, it meant working with a group of professors who believed in him and from whom he could learn how to thrive in an academic setting. Like many first-generation students today, Jones had little to no guidance from family members about college experiences. He often felt alone: “. It was traumatic.” Determined to succeed no matter what, he formed lasting connections with advisors and professors whose mentorship shaped his academic achievements and future career, despite the racism he endured on campus. Years later, Jones told Michigan students that he was fully aware of the “stunted opportunities that plague Black artists, but he never [was] willing to let them overwhelm him.” When asked about racism hindering acting opportunities even in the 1990s, he responded: “Notice it, notice that it will affect somewhat your chances of getting work. And once you notice it, ignore it. .” Pressing forward also meant giving back to the university with his time, while also engaging in discussions about race when prompted. He regularly visited Ann Arbor, supporting Professor Halstead and the Theater Department's activities. And in 2015, at Coach Jim Harbaugh's request, Jones entered a New York City studio to record the powerful script for the football video—his last documented public narration. On screen, as Jones slowly puts on a headset and begins to speak, the pride he displays for the University of Michigan is a culmination of experiences: an exceptional education; caring faculty mentors; a determination to overcome bigotry and racism; a belief in the significance of the university—and, yes, championship football. Why Does U.S. Animal Welfare Lag Behind Europe?
Imagine you could be reincarnated as a domesticated animal, and you had the choice between being born in the U.S. or Spain. Where would you choose? Many people might think that Spain is a bad choice because of bullfighting. While it's true that an estimated number of bulls die in bullfights each year, it's a mistake to assume animals in Spain have worse lives overall than those in the U.S. Consider egg-laying hens. In the U.S., approximately 230 million hens live in cramped wire cages that don't allow them enough space to spread their wings. In Spain, however, keeping hens in such conditions is illegal. Spanish hens have nearly twice the space and enjoy access to nests, perching areas, and litter. These enrichments are completely absent in U.S. cages. These hens spend a full year in their cages, while a bull only lives for a short time before dying in a bullfight. So, it's reasonable to conclude that U.S. cages cause more suffering to hens than bullfights do to bulls, considering the length of time and conditions of confinement. And given that there are over 1,000 times more hens in Spain than bulls bred for bullfighting, a randomly selected domesticated animal is more likely to be a hen, and will have a much better life in Spain than the U.S. The situation is similar for pigs, especially pregnant sows raised for pork, ham, or bacon. In the U.S., approximately 75% of sows spend their entire 16-week pregnancy in individual stalls too narrow for them to turn around or walk more than a step forward or backward. Again, such practices are illegal in Spain. Even more disturbing are the methods used in the U.S. to kill millions of chickens and turkeys when bird flu is detected on a factory farm. Often, the birds are killed by sealing the shed and bringing in heaters, so that, after an hour or two of heat over 104°F, they die of heat stroke. In Spain, heating birds to death is prohibited. But it's not just about the U.S. vs. Spain. The laws that protect animals in Spain apply to all 27 countries that make up the European Union, stretching from Portugal to Finland. The UK, though no longer a member of the EU, maintains animal welfare standards similar to those of the EU. It's not just hens and pigs who have better lives in Europe than in the U.S. It is prohibited to conduct experiments on animals or import cosmetics tested on animals within the EU. There are no such restrictions in the U.S., and no one knows the exact number or types of experiments conducted. This is because the U.S. Animal Welfare Act, which gives the Department of Agriculture authority to regulate research on animals, specifically exempts research on rats, mice, and birds, which make up the majority of vertebrate animals used in U.S. experiments. Why does the U.S. lag so far behind the UK and EU in terms of animal welfare? One theory is that Americans still hold onto a Wild West mentality that tolerates harsh treatment of animals. Supporters of this view point to the continued existence of rodeos, which, like bullfights, entertain spectators by inflicting pain and suffering on animals. People who find it entertaining to watch a frightened calf being lassoed and dragged to the ground are unlikely to be concerned about the suffering of pigs or chickens. Yet, when Americans have the opportunity to vote for laws that give farmed animals more space, they consistently choose to do so. In 2002, 55% of Floridians voted to ban keeping pigs in stalls too narrow to allow them to turn around. In 2006, 62% of Arizonans voted to ban such stalls for pigs and veal calves. In 2008, 63% of Californians voted to ban such stalls for pigs and veal calves, as well as standard battery cages for hens. In 2016, 78% of Massachusettans voted to ban narrow stalls for pigs and veal, standard battery cages for hens, and the sale of pork, veal, and eggs from out-of-state producers using these systems. In 2018, 63% of Californians voted to ban the sale of pork, veal, and eggs from out-of-state producers using systems that don't meet California's standards. (A challenge by pork producers to the ban on in-state sales was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court.) So, I suggest that the U.S. lags so far behind the EU on animal welfare not because Americans care less about animals than Europeans, but because the U.S. political system is less democratic than parliamentary democracies. In most parliamentary democracies, political parties are stronger, and individual lawmakers don't need to raise large amounts of money to get re-elected. Money and lobbying have a significant influence in U.S. politics. The U.S. congressional committee system also disempowers the electorate in a way that cannot happen in a parliamentary democracy, where the Prime Minister and Cabinet are members of the legislature and have significant influence on legislation. In the U.S., House and Senate Agriculture committees in both state and federal Congresses are typically made up of lawmakers representing predominantly agricultural districts, effectively giving them a veto over proposals to protect farmed animals. These committees receive substantial donations from factory farm operators. In states without provision for citizen-initiated ballots, only tiny Rhode Island has farmed animal legislation that can compare with the EU or UK. At the federal level, there is no legislation that even attempts to regulate the conditions in which farmed animals are kept. Most Americans care about animals and would like their country to be among the leading nations in protecting animals from unnecessary suffering. The reality is more disturbing, and I hope that people who learn the true situation will seek to change it.

Paterson Consulting Inc. Named National Champion of Canada for the 2024 Constantinus International Award
Revive & Thrive: Unleashing the Power of Humic & Fulvic Acid for Sustainable GrowthMedicine Hat, Alberta Oct 25, 2024 - Discovering Armenia through the International CMC Conference A year ago, I wouldn't have known where Yerevan, Armenia was. But in 2024, I not only received the ICMCA Emerging Professional of the Year Award for CMC Alberta, but my company, Paterson Consulting Inc., was nominated for the prestigious 2024 Constantinus International Award. Our project with Carbon OxyTech, an Alberta-based cleantech company, brought us global recognition. This was my chance to explore a new culture and region, and the International CMC Conference seemed like the perfect way to do it. Bridging Cultures and Innovations Before going to Armenia, I connected with the team at IMC Armenia. Their conference theme, "Digital Horizons: Bridging Innovations For a Sustainable Tomorrow," resonated with me. I had recently given a keynote at Alberta's First GovTech Hackathon on Productivity & Performance Hacks, so I thought, why not share this knowledge with an international audience? The organizers agreed, and I was invited to join a Global Panel titled "Transforming Industry with AI." First Impressions of Yerevan Arriving in Yerevan, I was struck by the vibrant mix of new buildings and historic restorations. The city's landscape reflected a nation in transition. Luxury cars and well-dressed locals shared the streets with overhead power lines and payphones, showcasing Yerevan's blend of old and new. I found the Armenians to be incredibly kind, eager to learn about my work in Canada, and open to sharing their own stories and insights. One consultant even suggested I pursue a Ph.D., an idea that's now on my bucket list. Building Connections and Expanding Horizons The conference was a melting pot of ideas and cultures. I had the chance to meet with industry leaders like Joseph Wozniak from the ITC, who shared insights on new EU regulations crucial for international business. Leonid Kirakosyan from McKinsey & Company offered valuable advice on client expectations in the digital age, while Lars Sudman and David Yang provided practical innovation strategies and predictions on AI's role in business and everyday life. My Masterclass on Productivity & Performance Hacks was a highlight, drawing a full room of consultants eager to participate in creative exercises. It reminded me of the universal power of innovative thinking and our shared desire for progress. The Human Element in Technological Transformation When we talk about technology and change, we often see two extremes: those who see technology as a savior and those who fear it as a destroyer. I advocate for a balanced approach that combines innovation with the 'human element.' High-tech must be accompanied by human connection because, as businesses become more automated, those that thrive will be those that prioritize people. Using a three-pillar approach—people, processes, and systems—can lead to effective change, while customized automation solutions empower employees to take on more strategic roles. This optimizes both individual creativity and organizational efficiency. Why Should Consultants Care? For consultants, the integration of AI and real-time operational intelligence (RtOI) offers clear benefits. It provides quick wins for your clients, opens passive income streams for you, and supports the development of long-term strategies and client relationships. Implementing the right systems and processes can be transformative, turning resource constraints into opportunities for innovation. Exploring Armenia's Rich History While in Yerevan, I took time to learn about Armenia's history, including a visit to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex. The story of the Armenian Genocide during World War I, which resulted in the loss of 1.5 million lives, was both tragic and eye-opening. It reminded me of the vastness of history often overlooked in our education systems and the importance of engaging with the world beyond our textbooks. The True Wealth of Travel At the Constantinus Award & Gala Dinner, Paterson Consulting Inc. was awarded the National Champion of Canada, and our project advanced to the Top Six Consulting Projects of 2024. Travel is a powerful teacher. In just one week of exploring Armenia, I gained insights and experiences that far surpassed what any year of study could offer. If nothing else, travel enriches us by expanding our perspectives and deepening our understanding of the world. To all emerging professionals, technology innovators, management consultants, business professionals, and travel enthusiasts—dare to see the world. You never know what lessons await in the less-trodden corners of the globe. Traveling not only enhances your personal and professional life but also makes you richer in the most meaningful ways. Enjoy your travels, and here's to the adventures that lie ahead. Wesley Paterson, CMC & President of Paterson Consulting Inc.
