Climate Museum Uses Art to Encourage Climate Action
The first work of art visitors will see as they enter the Climate Museum’s latest exhibit is a map of the world in black, white, and gray. At first glance, the map illustrates which countries are responsible for the highest emissions, with the biggest emitters appearing black and the smallest emitters in white. But as the viewer shifts their perspective to the right, the map reveals itself as a lenticular print—a 3D artwork where the viewpoint changes the image entirely. From the right side, the map displays the vulnerability of each country to the effects of climate change, and the nations that were once in black are now in white, and vice versa. The impact of the map is only visible when the viewer moves. In other words, visitors cannot remain stationary—they have to actively choose to see the inequities the map presents. The map highlights a key strategy employed by the Climate Museum, which installed the piece at The Nest Climate Campus at New York City’s 2024 Climate Week: engaging viewers through interactive art, in hopes that they will subsequently take action. “We combine art with educational opportunities and calls to action in such a way that visitors leave the show recognizing their own agency and prepared to take action in a new way,” museum founder and director Miranda Massie tells TIME. “This very simple formula is incredibly effective at helping people understand themselves as agents of change.” Massie explains that the creation of the museum—the first in the United States dedicated to climate—was partly inspired by recognizing the “superpowers” of museums as cultural institutions, possessing both high levels of and , assets that are particularly valuable in tackling an issue rife with misinformation and partisan divides, while trust in public institutions overall . To that end, the Climate Museum has a specific target audience in mind for the lenticular map and other pieces of art, including a towering 70-foot-mural narrating the story of past industrialization and an envisioned positive future titled by artist R. Gregory Christie. Massie states that the team typically directs their exhibitions to members of the public who call the “alarmed”—those most concerned about climate who are inactive but willing to be engaged. “We need worried people to become more actively involved and to acknowledge their own agency,” Massie says. “A museum is a means of achieving this goal, one that can advance this purpose and therefore support progress on climate policy.” According to Anais Reyes, senior exhibitions associate at the museum, this is where art plays a pivotal role. It serves as an “entry point” for people to react to what they see and feel, to attempt to open themselves up to understanding that they are not alone in their anxieties about the climate crisis. A key example of an installation that encourages viewers to participate in the artwork is the sticker wall. There, at the end of scheduled programming or when people happen to wander over, participants are invited to place a sticker on a blank wall, stating what they are willing to commit to doing to address climate change. “I will talk about climate justice,” one says. “I will tell people about the climate supermajority,” another reads, referencing that while 66%-80% of Americans support policies that mitigate the climate crisis, Americans estimate that number to be only 37–43%. At Climate Week, what was once an empty wall is quickly covered in commitments. “The sticker wall began as a way to represent the collective, to portray how you might feel alone in this, how you might feel [an] existential threat, but in reality, there are so many people who feel the same way as you, and we’re all interconnected, and we’re all striving to make things better,” Reyes says. Yet as the museum strives to inspire viewers to enact change, it’s engaged in its own battle to secure funding for a permanent home. The museum, which held its first exhibit in 2018, still lacks a building or long-term space for its exhibitions. Its booth, programming, and art at the Nest’s Climate Campus for Climate Week, which runs from Sept. 22 until Sept. 29 at the Javits Convention Center in Hudson Yards, Manhattan, shares a space with multiple other organizations including General Motors. “We’ve faced an incredibly challenging time coming into existence and staying in existence, and we have not been able to grow in a way that matches public interest in our work, and that is profoundly wasteful,” Massie says. In 2022, less than two percent of philanthropic funding worldwide went to climate crisis mitigation, according to a study done by Despite reasons for despair in both the climate crisis and museum fundraising, the Climate Museum also prioritizes hope. During the museum’s Climate Week programming on Sept. 24, Nicholas Badullovich, a researcher from George Mason University, presented findings from a study on the museum’s previous exhibit, “The End of Fossil Fuel,” that determined people left feeling hopeful, even though the exhibit presented tragedies related to the climate crisis, the fossil fuel industry, and climate injustice. “We’re not here to dwell in doom and gloom,” Reyes says. “We’re here to envision that better future, to acknowledge that there are many things that can be done, and we all just need a little bit of guidance to channel that energy into something productive, into something hopeful and actionable.”
Oklahoma Set to Execute Man Despite Parole Board’s Clemency Recommendation
Oklahoma is poised to execute a man on Thursday while awaiting Republican Governor Kevin Stitt’s decision on whether to grant clemency, following an unusual recommendation for mercy from the state’s parole board. Emmanuel Littlejohn, 52, is scheduled to die by lethal injection for his role in the 1992 fatal shooting of a convenience store owner during a robbery. In his six years as governor, Stitt has only granted clemency once and has rejected recommendations from the state’s Pardon and Parole Board in three other cases. A spokeswoman for Stitt said on Wednesday that the governor had met with prosecutors and Littlejohn’s attorneys but had not made a decision. The execution is set for 10 a.m. at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary. Littlejohn would be the 14th person executed in Oklahoma under Stitt’s administration. Another execution is scheduled later Thursday in Alabama, and if both proceed, it would be the first time in decades that five death row inmates have been put to death in the U.S. within a single week. In Oklahoma, an appellate court on Wednesday rejected a last-minute legal challenge to the constitutionality of the state’s lethal injection method of execution. Littlejohn would be the third Oklahoma inmate to be put to death this year. He was 20 when prosecutors say he and co-defendant Glenn Bethany robbed the Root-N-Scoot convenience store in south Oklahoma City in June 1992. The store’s owner, Kenneth Meers, 31, was killed. During video testimony to the Pardon and Parole Board last month, Littlejohn apologized to Meers’ family but denied firing the fatal shot. Littlejohn’s attorneys pointed out that the same prosecutor tried Bethany and Littlejohn in separate trials using a nearly identical theory, even though there was only one shooter and one bullet that killed Meers. But prosecutors told the board that two teenage store employees who witnessed the robbery both said Littlejohn, not Bethany, fired the fatal shot. Bethany was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Littlejohn’s attorneys also argued that killings resulting from a robbery are rarely considered death penalty cases and that prosecutors today would not have pursued the ultimate punishment. “It is evident that Emmanuel would not have been sentenced to death if he’d been tried in 2024 or even 2004,” attorney Caitlin Hoeberlein told the board. Littlejohn was prosecuted by former Oklahoma County District Attorney Bob Macy, who was known for his zealous pursuit of the death penalty and secured 54 death sentences during more than 20 years in office. The board’s 3-2 recommendation gave Stitt the option of commuting Littlejohn’s sentence to life in prison without parole. The governor has appointed three of the board’s members. In 2021, Stitt granted clemency to Julius Jones, commuting his sentence to life without parole just hours before Jones was scheduled to receive a lethal injection. He denied clemency recommendations from the board for Bigler Stouffer, James Coddington and Phillip Hancock, all of whom were executed. The executions in Oklahoma and Alabama would make for 1,600 executions nationwide since the death penalty was reinstated by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Japanese Court Acquits 88-Year-Old Man After Decades on Death Row
TOKYO — A Japanese court ruled Thursday that an 88-year-old former boxer was not guilty in a retrial for a 1966 quadruple murder, overturning an earlier wrongful conviction after decades on death row. Iwao Hakamada’s acquittal by the Shizuoka District Court marks him as the fifth death-row convict to be found not guilty in a retrial in postwar Japanese criminal justice. This case could reignite a debate regarding the abolition of the death penalty in Japan. The court’s presiding judge, Koshi Kunii, said the court acknowledged a multiple fabrications of evidence and that Hakamada was not the culprit, NHK said. Hakamada was convicted of murder in the 1966 killing of a company manager and three of his family members, and setting a fire to their central Japan home. He was sentenced to death in 1968, but was not executed due to lengthy appeals and the retrial process. He spent 48 years behind bars—most of them on death row—making him the world’s longest-serving death row inmate. It took 27 years for the top court to deny his first appeal for retrial. His second appeal for a retrial was filed in 2008 by his sister Hideko Hakamada, now 91, and the court finally ruled in his favor in 2023, paving the way for the latest retrial that began in October. Hakamada was when a court ordered a retrial based on new evidence suggesting his conviction may have been based on fabricated accusations by investigators, but was not cleared of the conviction. After his release, Hakamada served his sentence at home because his frail health and age made him a low risk for escape. At a final hearing at the Shizuoka court in May before Thursday’s decision, prosecutors again demanded the death penalty, triggering criticism from rights groups that prosecutors were trying to prolong the trial. The extremely high hurdles for retrials have also prompted legal experts to call for a revision to the system. During the investigation that followed his arrest, Hakamada initially denied the accusations, then confessed. He later said he was forced to confess under violent interrogation by police. A major point of contention was five pieces of blood-stained clothing that investigators claimed Hakamada wore during the crime and hid in a tank of fermented soybean paste, or miso. The clothes were found more than a year after his arrest. A Tokyo High Court ruling in 2023 acknowledged scientific experiments that clothing soaked in miso for more than a year turns too dark for bloodstains to be spotted, noting a possible fabrication by investigators. Defense lawyers and earlier retrial decisions said the blood samples did not match Hakamada’s DNA, and trousers that prosecutors submitted as evidence were too small for Hakamada and did not fit when he tried them on. Japan and the United States are the only two countries in the Group of Seven advanced nations that retain capital punishment. A survey by the Japanese government showed an overwhelming majority of the public support executions. Executions are carried out in secrecy in Japan and prisoners are not informed of their fate until the morning they are hanged. In 2007, Japan began disclosing the names of those executed and some details of their crimes, but disclosures are still limited. Supporters say Hakamada’s nearly half-century detention has taken a toll on his mental health. Most of his time behind bars was spent in solitary confinement, in fear of execution. He spent a total of 48 years in prison, more than 45 of them on death row. His sister Hideko Hakamada has devoted around half of her life to win his innocence. Before Thursday’s ruling, she said she was in a never-ending battle. “It is so difficult to get a retrial started,” She told reporters in Tokyo. “Not just Iwao, but I’m sure there are other people who have been wrongly accused and crying. … I want the criminal law revised so that retrials are more easily available.”

Warpsolution’s Space:on Achieves FCC Part 18 Certification, Advancing Wireless Charging
Seoul, Korea – September 26, 2024 – (SeaPRwire) – As CES 2025 approaches, Warpsolution’s Space:on has received FCC Part 18 certification, enhancing its market potential by enabling efficient power delivery across any distance without limitations. Revolutionizing Wireless Charging FCC Part 18 certification marks a key advancement for Space:on, setting it apart by supporting high-power, long-distance wireless charging. This contrasts with FCC Part 15, which limits devices to shorter ranges and lower power, primarily for communication devices like routers and consumer electronics. Key Distinctions: Part 15 vs. Part 18 FCC Part 15 regulations are designed primarily for devices with communication functions, typically limiting power usage to less than 1W and applying strict controls on spurious emissions to minimize interference. In contrast, FCC Part 18 aligns with ITU recommendations and caters to industrial, scientific, and medical devices. It permits up to 1W at 920MHz with provisions for higher power under specific conditions, offering potential for greater power usage in future applications. This regulatory framework not only ensures technological efficiency and safety but also supports innovations like Warpsolution’s Space:on. Beyond Conventional Charging Space:on can charge multiple devices within a 40cm diameter, featuring a touch-activated system that integrates seamlessly into any environment, providing a cable-free experience. This positions Warpsolution at the forefront of the industry. Environmental Impact and Market Expansion The FCC Part 18 certification highlights Space:on’s role in promoting sustainability by minimizing electronic waste and enhancing energy efficiency. This positions the product as a leader in eco-friendly technology solutions. Future Prospects With this certification, Warpsolution is poised to transform how devices are powered, enhancing usability in homes and businesses. Space:on is not just a technological advancement; it represents a future where technology integrates seamlessly into our lives while adhering to high safety and environmental standards. Robert Seropian Offers Self-Funded Pension Plans for Secure Retirement
Robert Seropian Fort Lauderdale, Florida Sep 25, 2024 - The unpredictable nature of today's markets can be daunting for those nearing retirement, with potential losses causing significant anxiety. Robert Seropian, a financial services expert with over 30 years of experience, offers a solution for those seeking control over their financial future without the stress of market volatility. His innovative approach to self-funded pensions provides retirees and pre-retirees with the stability they need for lifelong financial security. Addressing the Pension Gap: Taking Control of Retirement Security Traditionally, pensions provided a reliable source of income for retirees. However, with many employers no longer offering pensions, and even existing ones facing underfunding or default risks, individuals are left searching for ways to create their own financial safety nets. Robert Seropian's self-funded pension approach offers a solution. "If your hard-earned savings are exposed to the ups and downs of the market, it's time to consider a new strategy," emphasizes Seropian. "You don't need to rely on an employer for a pension - you can build your own." Seropian empowers clients with a retirement strategy designed to provide guaranteed income for life, akin to a traditional pension. This approach ensures a steady monthly income stream throughout retirement years, eliminating the risk of outliving savings and providing peace of mind. It also guarantees financial security for loved ones after the retiree's passing. Self-Funded Guaranteed Pension: A Case Study One of Seropian's clients, John, had amassed $2 million in retirement assets through meticulous saving and investing. However, as retirement neared, he became increasingly concerned about market volatility and the need for guaranteed income. After working with Seropian, John decided to allocate a portion of his assets to a guaranteed pension plan. This decision provided him with a steady monthly income stream, enabling him to cover living expenses and enjoy retirement without financial stress. John now spends time with his grandchildren, taking them on roller coaster rides, while his savings remain securely invested, unburdened by market volatility. Lifelong Income, Guaranteed: A Foundation for Peace of Mind This focus on security and peace of mind is core to Seropian's philosophy. "Your retirement savings shouldn't be a gamble," he explains. "By investing in a self-funded pension, you ensure a stable, predictable income for yourself and your spouse, while also protecting your family's future." Tailored Solutions for Every Individual's Needs Recognizing the unique financial circumstances of each client, Seropian believes a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective for retirement planning. He meticulously assesses each client's assets, goals, and needs before recommending a personalized strategy. For example, John's $2 million retirement portfolio provided the flexibility to allocate a portion to a guaranteed pension plan while maintaining liquid funds for short-term needs. However, other clients may prefer a different approach based on their individual requirements. Regardless of the situation, Seropian's client-centric approach ensures every retirement plan is tailored to the individual's specific financial circumstances and future aspirations. Sapient Insights Group Ranks Top HR Technology Solutions for Vendor Satisfaction
Las Vegas, Nevada, September 25, 2024 - Sapient Insights Group today announced the top 20 HR technology solutions based on vendor satisfaction in its 2024-2025 HR Systems Survey, now in its 27th year. The rankings are based on responses from HR professionals representing 3,318 organizations. This year's survey respondents evaluated 274 technology solutions across 14 different technology segments. To assist buyers in identifying the most suitable HR system providers, the rankings are categorized into three company size groups: small, mid-sized, and enterprise. Survey participants were asked to rate their satisfaction with their current solutions in each technology segment on a scale of 1 to 5, focusing on support and service. The survey also included open-ended questions for feedback. In addition to vendor satisfaction rankings, Sapient also determines user experience rankings for HR tech solutions based on survey responses. In her presentation at the annual HR Technology Conference on Wednesday, September 25, Stacey Harris, managing partner, and chief research officer, will delve deeper into the rankings and discuss other key survey findings to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the HR technology landscape. Harris will cover current and projected adoption rates, customer retention, replacement plans, and projected market growth, along with demographic details about those involved in purchase decisions and those managing increasingly complex HR tech ecosystems. To help buyers and vendors better understand market dynamics and shifts, she will also highlight important trends by comparing data from this year's report with previous years. "Our survey's vendor satisfaction rankings are always a significant consideration for HR tech buyers and vendors alike, as they are completely objective and free from sponsorship," said Harris. "This year, we are observing a strong correlation between customer retention and high vendor satisfaction scores. Historically, this hasn't always been the case, particularly during the Covid years when companies were hesitant to make major technology changes. This year's data indicates that vendors are becoming more responsive to customer needs in terms of features, functionality, service, and support." The top-ranked solutions for vendor satisfaction are listed below. Rankings include point solutions, modules within technology suites, and, in some cases, service providers: HR Management Workday (enterprise) HiBob (mid-sized) Rippling (small) Payroll Workday (enterprise) isolved (mid-sized) Rippling (small) Time Management UKG Pro (Enterprise) isolved (mid-sized) HiBob (small) Benefits and Wellness Fidelity NetBenefits/PSW (enterprise) Fidelity NetBenefits/PSW (mid-sized) Rippling (small) HR Service Delivery Dovetail (enterprise) Workday Help (mid-sized) HiBob (small) Performance Cornerstone (enterprise) Cornerstone (mid-sized) Lattice (small) Compensation Payscale Market Pay (enterprise) Workday (mid-sized) Payscale Payfactors (small) Recruiting icims (enterprise) ADP (mid-sized) Workable (small) Onboarding icims (enterprise) isolved (mid-sized_ Rippling (small) Succession Cornerstone (aggregate for all size categories) Rewards and Recognition Achievers (enterprise) Achievers (mid-sized) Learning Cornerstone (enterprise) Docebo (mid-sized) KnowBe4 (small) Analytics and Planning Visier (enterprise) Tableau (mid-sized) Paylocity (small) Employee Engagement Culture Amp (aggregate for all size categories) The complete Voice of the Customer results across all technology segments are available.
