(SeaPRwire) – According to a Saturday report by Reuters, Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has sustained severe facial and leg injuries resulting in disfigurement due to coordinated U.S.-Israel airstrikes on Tehran in February.
Khamenei is currently recovering from wounds sustained during the February 28 air raids that resulted in the death of his father, the previous Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei. Since his hospitalization, he has not made any public appearances.
Citing three anonymous sources close to the leadership, Reuters noted that despite his physical trauma, Khamenei is reportedly still “mentally sharp.” He is reportedly maintaining contact with the Iranian delegation currently in Pakistan, which is engaging in peace negotiations with a U.S. team headed by Vice President JD Vance.
This reporting by Reuters aligns with a prior assertion made by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who informed the press on March 13 that Khamenei was “likely disfigured.”
Hegseth repeated this assertion during a press briefing on Thursday, during which he detailed the accomplishments of the U.S. military operations in Iran.
“Their top leadership was systematically eliminated: their prior supreme leader is dead, the supreme national security council secretary is dead, the supreme leader’s office advisor is dead, the chief of the supreme leader’s military office is dead, the defense minister is gone, the IRGC commander is dead, the armed forces general staff commander is dead, the intelligence minister is dead, the IRGC navy commander is gone, and the IRGC intelligence chief is dead,” Hegseth enumerated.
“I skipped over a bunch, and I could go on and on, to include the new—so-called new supreme leader—who is wounded and disfigured. This new regime had run out of options and time, so they agreed to a deal.”
Although his physical state is compromised, Khamenei pledged to resist in a defiant written statement released on Thursday.
“Iran does not desire war, yet it will not surrender its rights and views all resistance fronts as a single, unified entity,” the statement declared.
During his March press conference, Hegseth characterized the statement as “weak.”
“It was a written statement. Iran has plenty of cameras and voice recorders. Why issue a written statement?” Hegseth questioned. “I believe you know the reason. His father is dead. He is terrified, injured, on the run, and lacks legitimacy. It is a chaotic situation for them. Who is actually in charge? Even Iran might not know.”
Sources indicated to Reuters that Khamenei might reappear in the public eye within a month or two, but only if “his health and the security situation permit it.”
Although there is widespread public speculation regarding when and where the supreme leader might be seen again, Iranian hardliners emphasize the necessity of him maintaining a low profile.
“Why should he appear in public? Just to become a target for these criminals?” an Iranian militiaman inquired of Reuters via text message.
