The clash between Israel’s UN envoy Danny Danon and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani isn’t just petty name-calling. Danon labeled Mamdani a “clown” for demanding Netanyahu’s arrest during his September UN General Assembly visit. But this exchange reveals deeper rifts in how Western leaders confront Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Official statements hide more than they show. Danon dismisses Mamdani’s call as a “stunt” and says the mayor should focus on NYC’s homeless or garbage. Mamdani, in a July 21 video, calls Netanyahu a “war criminal” and cites the ICC arrest warrant. The subtext is clear: Mamdani rallies a base fed up with U.S. support for Israel’s Gaza campaign. Danon tries to silence him to avoid the ICC warrant’s uncomfortable questions.
Mamdani’s claims are specific: 73,000 killed, children maimed without anesthesia, neonatal hospitals targeted, aid blocked. Danon pushes back, saying “no humanitarian issues in Gaza” and calls these “blood libels.” But he ignores a key fact: the U.S. isn’t an ICC member, so the warrant can’t be enforced here. Mamdani knows this—his call pressures the U.S. to join the ICC and rethink its Israel policy.
This spat is a warning. Netanyahu will still speak at the UN in September. But Mamdani’s move has shifted the conversation. It shows Western public opinion is splitting, and Israel can’t count on unwavering support from all Western leaders anymore.
