“He deserves this nomination…”-Activist De Bouse (Lead Belly’s great niece)
Cleveland, Ohio, December 20, 2024 – Lead Belly’s music continues to resonate, transcending generations. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, known as the King of the 12-String guitar,
has received a 2025 R&B Hall of Fame nomination.
Lead Belly’s great-niece and founder of National Huddie Ledbetter Day, activist Greshun De Bouse, stated, “He is deserving of this nomination, as his unique musical stylings and influence span genres, generations, and cultures.”
While renowned for his 12-string guitar prowess, Lead Belly also played piano, mandolin, harmonica, and violin, complemented by his powerful vocals. His music has been covered and sampled by numerous artists, including Elvis, Johnny Cash, the Beatles, Ludacris, and Missy Elliott. The 2025 R&B Hall of Fame inductees will be announced in early 2025, with hopes high for Lead Belly’s inclusion. Fellow 2025 nominees with Shreveport, LA connections include the Louisiana Hayride & KWKH – TV/Radio Station, a significant 1950s venue, and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who recently established G-Unit studios in Shreveport. Lead Belly’s legacy is celebrated in Shreveport’s Ledbetter Heights neighborhood, where a statue serves as a local landmark. Beyoncé, despite her New Orleans ties, is also among the 2025 nominees. Shreveport is a contender to become one of three permanent homes for the R&B Hall of Fame. De Bouse added, “Shreveport deserves recognition for its musical contributions to the world,” highlighting Lead Belly’s nomination as a testament to this.
