THE number of dengue cases in the country from January to October 2022 has increased by 191 percent compared to the same period in 2021, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Friday, October 14.

DOH epidemiology bureau director Dr. Alethea de Guzman said a total of 173,233 dengue cases were recorded since January, much higher than the 59,514 cases recorded from January to October 2021.

She said the increase started in the third week of March and peaked during the second week of July.

She said the dengue epidemic curve is currently trending downward.

The DOH said they recorded 528 dengue-related deaths, as of October 1.

Among the regions, Central Luzon had the most dengue cases with 34,347, followed by Metro Manila with 18,638 cases and Calabarzon (Region 4A) with 14, 984.

De Guzman said dengue cases in areas with declared outbreaks such as Zamboanga City, Antique and Zamboanga Sibugay were already decreasing.

Cholera

Meanwhile, De Guzman said the 3,890 cholera cases in the country recorded since January was also higher than in 2021 where only 1,009 cases were recorded.

She said most of the cases were in Eastern Visayas with 2,622 cases, Davao Region with 441 cases and Caraga with 289 cases.

The cholera death toll, as of October 1, stood at 37, which is 640-percent higher than in the same period in 2021.

De Guzman said the cholera cases in the country are already plateauing over the last month since it peaked during July. (SunStar Philippines)
