(SeaPRwire) – With only two feature films, Zach Cregger has cemented his reputation as one of the most creative and daring voices in modern studio horror. His debut, Barbarian, was marketed as a standard thriller about an Airbnb double-booking, but it surprised critics and audiences alike by spiraling into a bizarre, terrifying nightmare that offered a sharp critique of various forms of toxic misogyny. His follow-up, last year’s Weapons, was a more enigmatic and structurally intricate mystery centered on a missing class of elementary students and the fractured perspectives of their community; it proved to be a major hit for Warner Bros. and earned Amy Madigan an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Following the success of his first two acclaimed features, Cregger shows no signs of slowing down. He is set to release a highly anticipated Resident Evil franchise reboot this September and is collaborating again with Warner Bros. and New Line to co-write a Weapons prequel centered on Madigan’s mysterious and sinister character, Aunt Gladys. Despite his busy schedule, he has now added another project to his slate, this time in partnership with a Hollywood icon.

According to Deadline, the conclusion of Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation featured the announcement that Zach Cregger will write and direct The Flood, an original science fiction thriller produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros. and New Line. While no plot details have been disclosed, the film is scheduled for release on August 11, 2028.
Cregger’s versatility remains one of his greatest artistic assets. Having started his career on the IFC sketch comedy series The Whitest Kids U’ Know and co-directing the 2009 comedy Miss March with his late collaborator Trevor Moore, he successfully transitioned into genre-focused cinema. Moving into science fiction feels like a natural progression—much like Jordan Peele’s shift into the genre with Nope—and given that he often incorporates comedic elements into his horror work, it is possible this new project will also feature horror sensibilities.

Given the success of his previous, unconventional films, it is clear that Zach Cregger has the creative freedom to continue pursuing fresh ideas, and science fiction is an ideal medium for that alongside horror. With the support of Spielberg’s production company—a veteran of the sci-fi genre—as well as Warner Bros. and New Line, it is expected that Cregger’s next project will be as bold and unexpected as Barbarian and Weapons. Hopefully, more details will be revealed soon.
The Flood releases on August 11th, 2028.
