Fantasy franchises constantly strive to build the most immersive worlds. Game of Thrones draws from early modern influences, Lord of the Rings features profound mythology, and The Chronicles of Narnia explores childhood imagination and religious symbolism. Yet since its inception, one fantasy realm has remained more immersive than all others: the tabletop role-playing game.

Numerous artistic mediums, from theater to to video games, have attempted to capture the experience of collaborative storytelling with a Dungeon Master. Now, one of the most faithful video game adaptations is receiving a television series from a highly accomplished showrunner—but can it successfully convey that same experience?

According to , HBO is developing a series with The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin as showrunner. Baldur’s Gate 3 is the most recent installment in the Baldur’s Gate video game series set within the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Although this series comes from one of the creative forces behind The Last of Us, it differs significantly from that adaptation. The Last of Us faithfully recreated the game’s narrative, whereas this new series will extend the Baldur’s Gate storyline.

This approach likely stems from the game’s inherent structure. Similar to Dungeons & Dragons, Baldur’s Gate 3 offers extensive customization options. From character creation and development to party members and , to side quests, no two players are likely to have identical experiences.

Nevertheless, this challenge isn’t insurmountable. is perhaps the most renowned open-world franchise, yet its Amazon Prime Video adaptation successfully captured the games’ essence by presenting a distinct narrative while incorporating numerous references and shared story elements. The Baldur’s Gate series will likely follow a comparable path, exploring the world following the game’s conclusion.

However, Craig Mazin’s participation has raised some concerns among fans. The Chernobyl creator served as showrunner for The Last of Us during its first two seasons alongside game director Neil Druckmann, but Druckmann ahead of the upcoming Season 3. According to video game journalists, Larian Studios—the developers of Baldur’s Gate—will not contribute to the series, prompting speculation that the adaptation may not achieve the same level of fidelity as The Last of Us.

Another potential drawback surrounds this new venture. Following The Last of Us Season 1, Druckmann and Mazin indicated that the second game would be adapted into . But if Mazin is already preparing his next project, Season 3 appears likely to conclude the series.

Yet even if The Last of Us reaches its conclusion, Craig Mazin’s foray into video game adaptations will persist with an entirely new chapter in the Baldur’s Gate saga.
