(SeaPRwire) – Only a few months separate Spider-Man fans from Tom Holland’s next turn as the web-slinging hero in Brand New Day — yet the crew behind the Marvel movie is making the most of every available minute. Holland recently shared that even though main filming has wrapped, he’s been part of reshoots to polish Brand New Day even further.
“I can positively say that the stuff we’re doing, we don’t need,” the actor told GQ. “The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas.”
It’s difficult to completely believe that Brand New Day doesn’t require any of the extra footage. Holland is working with director Destin Daniel Cretton, and reshoots usually aren’t optional “just for fun” additions for a film that’s already firing on all cylinders — they’re typically necessary to make a disjointed story more coherent. Naturally, Holland’s stance makes sense: audiences have grown to dread the word “reshoots,” even though they’re common, especially for Marvel projects.

That said, not every Marvel project is like Captain America: Brave New World, which underwent three significant rounds of reshoots. Many would argue that the 2025 film made a big error by attempting to insert a new villain (Giancarlo Esposito’s Sidewinder) into an already packed story. While that idea was well-intentioned, it ended up wasting resources: Sidewinder’s presence wasn’t substantial enough to justify his role, even if it was meant to build up to a bigger part later on. We’d hope Marvel has learned from that misstep — but Holland’s remarks might suggest otherwise.
Holland states that the reshoots for Brand New Day are centered on “layering in a villain plotline in a new way,” along with other goals like injecting more humor into the film. His comments are just ambiguous enough not to raise red flags right now, but they should still make us cautious. A major flaw in previous Spider-Man films — especially those before Holland’s tenure — was having too many villains. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home avoided this by focusing on one antagonist at a time, but No Way Home was extremely crowded, including not only villains from older Spider-Man movies but also the previous Spider-Man actors themselves.

Brand New Day will be just as packed. Cretton has included anti-heroes like the Punisher (Jon Bernthal), ex-Avengers like Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), and a host of minor Spider-Man villains such as Scorpion (Michael Mando), Tarantula, Boomerang, and the ruthless ninja group called the Hand. There’s also an undisclosed mysterious villain with puppet-master-like abilities: they can invade victims’ minds and take control of their bodies whenever they want. This could be Sadie Sink’s secret role, or the Stranger Things star might be playing another villain (or even a love interest!). And that’s probably not the only surprise Cretton has planned — so any clarity the reshoots bring to the film is much needed. As long as the team doesn’t force a new villain into this already chaotic mix, Brand New Day should be in capable hands.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.
