(SeaPRwire) –   When Star Wars shifted to the prequel trilogy, its tone changed too. The scrappy Rebel Alliance was gone; for most of the prequels, action unfolds in the halls of the Jedi Council or the Galactic Senate. This turn to a political thriller brought much of the story back to Coruscant, the Star Wars galaxy’s capital.

Coruscant became synonymous with urban jungles, dark alleys, deathstick dealers, and no-frills diners. But Star Wars’ latest series proves that even though Coruscant is the galaxy’s main city planet, it’s far from the only one.

Heads up! Spoilers for Maul: Shadow Lord Episodes 1 and 2 ahead!

Janix from Maul: Shadow Lord is a city planet untouched by the Empire—at least, not right now. | Lucasfilm

Maul: Shadow Lord is a cat-and-mouse crime thriller centered on Maul, the Zabrak anti-hero we all know (and either love or love to hate), and Captain Brander Lawson, a single-dad space cop determined to catch this crime lord before he slips away. This neo-noir is set on a bustling city planet, but to many fans’ surprise, it’s not Coruscant. Instead, it’s Janix—a planet Marvel’s official website describes as “a neon-lit, shadow-soaked maze of a planet beyond the Empire’s reach.”

So why introduce a city that’s nearly identical to Coruscant? For planets, just like real estate, it all boils down to location, location, location. A key trait of Janix is that the Empire hasn’t interfered with it yet, so its law enforcement remains independent for now. But that could change anytime (and the Star Destroyer in the trailer suggests it will), so Brander has to investigate without ruffled feathers—including his ex-wife, who works for the Empire.

While Janix may look like Coruscant, it can’t be—its meant to be a quiet, obscure planet, not the Planet that Never Sleeps. Plus, the series features hidden Jedi, and Coruscant would be a terrible place to lay low.

But how else does Janix differ from Coruscant? Star Wars excels at building unique cultures from scratch, so we’ll learn more in the coming weeks. Even if Janix only appears here, it’s comforting to know Star Wars’ city lovers have more options than Coruscant—living there must be insane after the Clone Wars.
