From the moment it was announced, fans had concerns about . Game of Thrones had just concluded with a final season that hurriedly wrapped up its narrative threads after exhausting its source material. Would House of the Dragon take the same approach and begin fabricating content once its foundation, George R. R. Martin’s fictional historical text Fire & Blood, was depleted? We now have our answer, and it’s a reassuring one.

During an appearance on the , House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed that scripting has commenced for Season 4, which will be the series’ final installment. “It truly feels like we’ve turned a major page,” he expressed. “With only one season remaining, it feels as though we can give our complete effort.”

This doesn’t come as a major shock. In a 2022 , George R. R. Martin hypothesized that adapting the Dance of Dragons—the inter-Targaryen conflict House of the Dragon centers on—would require four seasons. And prior to Season 2’s premiere in 2024, Condal was already considering the conclusion. “I do know now where we’re going to end this particular story,” he . “And when I say end it, I just mean drop the curtain on it.”

Although it’s disappointing to realize we’re already midway through this saga, this news provides reassurance to fans still recovering from Game of Thrones‘ dramatic downturn. House of the Dragon will (presumably) conclude precisely where Fire & Blood concludes, and won’t attempt to extend the narrative or deviate from the source material to create additional seasons. Furthermore, this is merely the beginning for the larger Thronesverse, as we’re only weeks away from premiering and bridging some gaps between the two series.

While it’s never pleasant to witness a quality series conclude, at least House of the Dragon is concluding on its own terms and stopping while it’s still strong. Game of Thrones may have committed some harsh errors, but lessons are being learned from them.

House of the Dragon is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
