Secret Wars won’t draw from the 1980s toy-focused storyline. Instead, it leans on Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 run. That comic destroyed the Ultimate Universe and subtly restructured the main 616 universe. It’s a blueprint for merging alternate universes into one cohesive world without alienating long-time fans.
The multiverse saga (starting with 2021’s WandaVision) has confused casual viewers. Too many alternate timelines and characters have turned off fans who don’t follow every show. A streamlined universe lowers the barrier to entry, bringing back lapsed viewers and attracting new ones. Disney can’t afford to lose its audience to DC or streaming competitors.
