Amazon Prime Video’s hit Fallout series has completed its first season, faithfully capturing the post-apocalyptic video game world without a direct adaptation. However, one iconic element has been absent until now: deathclaws, the supremely powerful monsters that plague players throughout the Fallout games.

While these mutated lizard creatures remain largely mysterious, the show has now unveiled a crucial piece of their origin story, pushing their history back further than many fans anticipated.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Fallout Season 2 Episode 5.

A flashback shows Cooper Howard’s military service in the Battle of Anchorage. | Amazon Prime Video

In a flashback during Season 2 Episode 4, the scene shifts to the Alaskan frontlines during the pre-war Battle of Anchorage. Cooper Howard is seen in malfunctioning power armor, denied retreat by his commanding officer. Confronted by a Chinese soldier, he is suddenly saved from her attack by a monstrous assault from behind—revealed to be a deathclaw.

This raises the question: what were these mutants doing before the nuclear bombs fell? The explanation is rooted in deep Fallout lore. According to the official Fallout 2 strategy guide, the creatures were originally engineered by the United States as a low-cost alternative to human soldiers for high-risk combat zones. This background is seldom mentioned in the games themselves, outside of notes that they were partially created from Jackson’s chameleons.

This backstory means when the deathclaw appears in New Vegas, it’s personal. | Amazon Prime Video

Why introduce this lore if it’s not central to the games? The answer becomes clear centuries later when Lucy discovers a deathclaw egg in New Vegas. Cooper, known as the Ghoul, has a deeply personal reaction. His history with deathclaws predates the apocalypse. Ironically, one saved his life in Anchorage, yet that does nothing to diminish their lethal threat when encountered in the wasteland.

A central theme of Fallout Season 2 is the betrayal by trusted institutions, extending even to the wasteland’s most terrifying beasts. For the Ghoul, the deathclaw represents more than just another irradiated monster like radscorpions. It stands as a potent symbol that everything he once fought for during his military service was built on a foundation of lies.

Fallout Season 2 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
