Apple TV’s alternate history spaceflight series has consistently ventured into unexpected territory with each season. However, Season 5 appears to be realizing a threat that has been building since Season 3. Following nearly twenty years of a Martian colony, Earth and Mars seem poised for a direct confrontation. Will this result in interplanetary warfare? The newly released epic trailer strongly suggests so.
The following contains minor spoilers for Seasons 1 through 4.
Beginning with Season 3, For All Mankind expanded its narrative beyond the Moon to showcase a new space race in 1995. During this period, the USSR, the US, and other powers vied to be the first to land humans on Mars. (While this diverges from actual history, the show has followed an alternate timeline ever since depicting a Soviet moon landing in 1969.) By the alternate year 2003 in Season 4, the fully established Happy Happy Valley base on Mars fought for financial autonomy, culminating in the theft of a precious asteroid in the finale. As Season 5 arrives in 2012, the fallout from that rebellion is set to escalate significantly, potentially with lethal consequences.
The most significant takeaway from the latest For All Mankind Season 5 trailer is the evident massive unrest on Mars. An aging Ed Baldwin is shown supporting the resistance against Earth. The trailer also highlights Ed’s grandson and Kelly’s son, Alex Baldwin (Sean Kaufman), as a central figure. In a key scene, Alex leads a group on Mars and proudly proclaims, “Mars is ours!”
While this revolutionary spirit will be central to For All Mankind Season 5, it is not the sole focus. The trailer hints that Helios founder and tech innovator (Edi Gathegi) is driving a major initiative on Mars. Simultaneously, Kelly Baldwin and Aleida Rosales advocate for exploration deeper into the solar system. As Aleida states in the trailer: “Our mission is to find life in the far reaches of the solar system.”
This narrative element—seeing For All Mankind boldly venture into the unknown—has been planted since the show’s first season. Early on, Ed discussed exploring the rest of the solar system, a concept showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi confirmed was integral to the show’s foundation. As they stated, “In our vision of the show, Mars is not the end.”

Consequently, For All Mankind Season 5 appears to have high stakes: a colossal conflict between Mars and Earth, a new generation taking the spotlight (specifically Alex Baldwin!), and an overarching strategy involving new planets and frontiers to shape the show’s future. While Mars represents the present of For All Mankind, Season 5 is equally focused on the future.
