(SeaPRwire) – Star Wars characters, much like time, continuously evolve and shift within the canon as new trilogies emerge. While original trilogy characters have appeared in the sequel trilogy and prequel characters in various spin-off TV shows, characters from the sequel trilogy have not had similar opportunities. Even Galaxy’s Edge, originally intended to be exclusively set in the sequel era, has gradually been re-envisioned as timeless.
However, this situation may be changing. Nearly a decade after his last appearance, one of the sequel trilogy’s most prominent breakout stars is reportedly taking steps to reprise his role — potentially gaining a chance to resolve his character’s narrative.

According to Variety, John Boyega attended MegaCon Orlando and was questioned about returning to the Star Wars universe as Finn, the stormtrooper who became a Resistance hero in the sequel trilogy. Reportedly, a fan called out, “Get Dave on the phone,” referring to Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer and Co-President Dave Filoni.
“I actually have, actually,” Boyega responded, implying that he has been discussing a possible return to the Star Wars universe, though no further details were disclosed. While the current focus of the Star Wars universe appears to be on the periods before (Andor) and after (The Mandalorian) the original trilogy, several upcoming projects are set within the sequel trilogy era, including Star Wars: Starfighter and the still-untitled Rey-focused movie. Finn could readily be incorporated into either of these projects.

It is widely known that Finn’s storyline suffered due to the inconsistent creative direction of the sequel trilogy. By 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, Finn was relegated to Rey’s companion, with his potential Force sensitivity left ambiguous and unexplored. Boyega has consistently voiced his dissatisfaction with his character’s ultimate development. In a 2020 interview with GQ, he stated, “What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are, and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.”
This issue isn’t exclusive to Finn. Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose Tico played a significant role in The Last Jedi but was largely sidelined in The Rise of Skywalker, demonstrating a clear pattern. However, if Finn is given the chance to return in a different film, he might finally receive the conclusion his storyline deserves — and Lucasfilm could rectify one of its most notable missteps from the sequel era.
The Star Wars sequel trilogy is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
