For dedicated Marvel fans who have been following leaked trailers for , a particular mutant’s return is generating significant buzz in the MCU.

According to a leaked trailer and reports from multiple sources, including , the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday trailer will likely showcase James Marsden reprising his role as Cyclops. While Mardsen’s return was previously confirmed, the integration of the Fox X-Men universe into the MCU remains unclear. The leaked footage reportedly shows Cyclops wearing his classic blue and yellow costume for the first time.

Throughout the X-Men films, Marsden’s portrayal of Scott Summers cast him as the “serious guy” counterpoint to Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman) “cool guy” persona. In X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Cyclops was abruptly killed off, seemingly penalizing the character for his stern disposition. The upcoming trailer scene appears to mirror the iconic opening sequence featuring Cyclops firing his optic blast skyward, potentially hinting at a reimagined version of the hero.

Beyond his depiction in live-action films, Scott Summers represents more than a mutant with optic blasts who resents Wolverine’s advances on Jean Grey. Across most X-Men iterations, he serves as the team’s natural leader and emotional core—a characterization that animated series have captured effectively while live-action adaptations have struggled to convey.

Now that Cyclops is rejoining the Marvel cinematic universe—likely as a variant—the character could return twenty years after his death in The Last Stand. While Marsden’s performance wasn’t the issue, the films consistently restricted the character’s depth and appeal. Will Doomsday finally deliver the Cyclops fans have long desired? Perhaps a costume update and two decades of anticipation will prove sufficient.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
