The President is set to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago on Monday afternoon; discussions are expected to center on rising tensions with Iran and the potential to move to further phases of the Gaza peace plan.Prior to his meeting with the President, Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with the Secretary of State on Monday morning.Dr. Dan Diker, head of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, told Digital that President Trump has probably been pressuring Netanyahu since the peace plan was put into effect, pointing out that the U.S. leader has little tolerance for Middle Eastern timelines—ones he says are much longer than those in the U.S. or real estate industry."The issue is that Hamas understands it only needs to survive, keep control of western Gaza, and keep attacking Israel—using Gaza’s tunnel network as it has been—to escalate tensions between Israel and the U.S.," Diker stated., he added, will first present Israel’s threat evaluation of Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas as highly serious, and emphasize to the President that Tehran is rebuilding its military capacities. He also is likely to try to convince Trump to let Israel take the actions it thinks are needed to defeat Hamas.Israeli opposition leader and ex-Prime Minister Yair Lapid told Digital that "We [Israel] should coordinate with President Trump on all key fronts, but our top priority must be the handling of ."Lapid added, "Israel must disarm Hamas and eliminate the threat from Gaza—and that demands carrying out President Trump’s plan."During their meeting, Netanyahu is said to present Trump with plans for a possible strike on Iran. Israel has alerted Washington that a recent Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps missile exercise may be covering up attack preparations—a worry that IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir shared with U.S. Central Command head Adm. Brad Cooper in recent Tel Aviv meetings. In a Saturday interview covered by the country’s media, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated his nation is involved in what he called a "" with the U.S., Israel, and Europe. The Times of Israel quoted him as saying: "In my view, we are in a full-fledged war with the U.S., Israel, and Europe," Pezeshkian said. "They aim to bring our country to its knees."Axios reported that U.S. intelligence judges there is no immediate threat, though Israeli defense officials state their forces are still on high alert.Per Dr. Meir Javedanfar, a lecturer on Iran and the Middle East at Reichman University, Netanyahu’s plan is likely to propose strikes on ."Israel will likely hope such a large-scale attack further erodes the legitimacy of Iran’s supreme leader, thus increasing political instability in the country. This is particularly true since Iran’s economy has worsened drastically after the recent war with Israel, and the regime isn’t taking the needed steps to tackle these issues," he stated.Israeli Minister for Settlement and National Missions Orit Strook emphasized the need to finish full Gaza demilitarization before proceeding to additional phases of the plan. She cited Trump’s October address to the Israeli Knesset, pointing out that he emphasized his part in building global support for Gaza’s demilitarization and obtaining a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding the complete dismantling of weapons, tunnels, and terrorist infrastructure."Hamas wakes up each day with the goal of harming us," Strook told Digital. "The IDF will not pull back even one meter, and no rehabilitation framework will be set up until full demilitarization is completed."If, heaven forbid, the opposite occurs in the meeting, it will be a failure of the peace plan, a failure for Trump himself—who would be accepting fake demilitarization—and a failure for us. We can’t claim we won this war if Hamas stays armed," she added.Still, Trump is expected to reveal the second phase of his Gaza framework soon—even amid Hamas’s of Israel Police Master Sgt. Ran Gvili, who was killed in the Oct. 7, 2023 massacre and whose body was taken to Gaza by Hamas terrorists. Digital’s Sophia Compton contributed to this report.
Autonomous Driving Enters the Core Value Realization Phase: What Anchors CIDI’s Valuation?
HONG KONG, December 29, 2025 - (ACN Newswire via SeaPRwire.com) – The global autonomous driving industry is transitioning from a phase of rapid technological advancement to one of commercial model implementation. Unlike the large-scale open-road trials dominated by technological narratives, CiDi Inc. ("CiDi" or "the Company"), with its full-stack technology as the core pillar, has achieved scaled commercial deployment, establishing itself as one of the most representative benchmark enterprises in this field.More significantly, this proven capability is now underpinning its expansion into additional closed environments and overseas markets, offering investors a more enduring and certain growth trajectory. On December 11, CiDi formally commenced its IPO process, with a Hong Kong listing imminent.Hardcore Intelligent Driving System: Building Efficiency Moats in Closed EnvironmentsAutonomous driving in closed environments, while seemingly straightforward, demands stability, cost-effectiveness, and scalability under high-intensity operations, complex road conditions and multi-vehicle coordination. UK prime minister criticized for welcoming back freed Egyptian prisoner following resurfacing of social media posts
is under fire after welcoming home a recently freed Egyptian prisoner who reportedly shared violent and antisemitic content on social media in the past.Successive British governments have advocated for the release of Alaa Abd el-Fattah, a dual British-Egyptian national who has been imprisoned in Egypt for much of the past 14 years. He was freed from prison in September after a pardon by the Egyptian president but stayed in the country under a travel ban that was only recently lifted, enabling his return to the U.K. on Friday.Starmer marked Abd el-Fattah's return by stating he was "delighted" that the activist had been reunited with his family in the UK.Meanwhile, a senior figure in the opposition Conservative Party criticized Starmer for providing a "personal, public endorsement" of Abd el-Fattah.Robert Jenrick, the Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor, sought clarification on whether Starmer was aware of past social media posts where Abd el-Fattah allegedly endorsed and police. Jenrick also called on Starmer to denounce Abd el-Fattah’s comments and retract his "unalloyed endorsement" of the activist."No one should be imprisoned arbitrarily or for peaceful dissent," Jenrick wrote. "Yet the prime minister should not lend the authority of his office to someone whose words veer into the language of racism and violence."Jenrick, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage have urged that Abd el-Fattah’s British citizenship be revoked and that he be deported. The UK government later clarified that the prime minister was unaware of the "abhorrent" social media posts when he made the welcoming statement. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated in a release that advocating for Abd el-Fattah’s release has been a "long-standing priority" for governments of both major parties, adding that this does not equate to endorsing his social media content."The government condemns Mr. El-Fattah’s past tweets and deems them abhorrent," the statement noted.Abd el-Fattah issued an "unequivocal apology" on Sunday, characterizing his past remarks as the "outbursts of a young man’s anger" amid regional crises and police brutality in Egypt.Abd el-Fattah’s family in the UK has argued that he spent much of the past 14 years in prison due to his opposition to Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s government. His mother, 69-year-old Laila Soueif, undertook a 10-month hunger strike to push British authorities to take further action to secure her son’s release.Shortly after Abd el-Fattah arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport, critics began sharing his past social media posts. Abd el-Fattah has previously maintained that the comments were taken out of context and were part of a "private conversation" during an Israeli offensive in the , as per The Times of London.

HONG KONG, December 29, 2025 - (ACN Newswire via SeaPRwire.com) – With manufacturing investment gradually recovering and the pace of industrial project construction continuing to advance, industrial buildings are accelerating toward standardised and prefabricated development. Against this backdrop, the application of industrial prefabricated steel structure buildings in manufacturing plants and large-scale industrial projects has continued to expand. As the listing process enters its final stage, USAS Building System (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (the “Company” or “USAS”) is set to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 30 December, and the industrial prefabricated steel structure sub-sector in which it operates is coming into the capital market's view.Industrial prefabricated steel structure buildings are a typical sub-sector of industrial construction. Demand is mainly derived from manufacturing plants and industrial projects, where higher requirements are placed on construction efficiency and delivery capability. Compared with residential and commercial buildings, industrial buildings place greater emphasis on construction efficiency, structural stability and compatibility with production systems. Continued capacity expansion across manufacturing sectors such as automotive, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, machinery and electronics, and logistics has strengthened the industrial nature of prefabricated steel structure buildings in industrial projects. In response to such demand, USAS has formed a relatively clear business positioning. The prospectus shows that the Company is not a single steel structure fabricator, but rather an integrated prefabricated steel structure building solution provider focused on the industrial sector, providing full-process subcontracting services for industrial plants and manufacturing projects, covering design optimisation, procurement, manufacturing and on-site installation. According to the Frost & Sullivan Report, by revenue in 2024, USAS ranked third in China's industrial prefabricated steel structure building market. Against the backdrop of an overall fragmented industry, USAS has established a relatively clear industry position. From an operating perspective, the Company has established a stable business foundation. Among these, prefabricated steel structure building subcontracting services are the core source of revenue. In 2024, revenue from this business was approximately RMB1.241 billion, accounting for 81.5% of total revenue, reflecting the Company's high degree of focus on its industrial prefabricated steel structure core business. In terms of profitability structure, the Company presents typical characteristics of an industrial project-based model. From 2022 to 2024, the Company's overall gross profit margin was 12.7%, 14.8% and 12.5%, respectively, while the gross profit margin of the core subcontracting business remained in the range of 13%–15% over the long term. In 2025, as certain large-scale industrial projects progressed in a concentrated manner, the Company achieved revenue of approximately RMB1.424 billion in the first half of the year, reflecting the impact of project execution cycles on the release of interim performance. From a medium- to long-term industry perspective, the penetration rate of prefabricated steel structures in China's industrial building sector remains at a relatively low level. Manufacturing investment upgrades, demand for compressed construction timelines and the continued advancement of green building policies provide a practical demand foundation for the industry. At the same time, emerging manufacturing bases such as Southeast Asia are accelerating the undertaking of global capacity relocation, which also brings new sources of projects for enterprises with cross-regional delivery capabilities.Against this backdrop, USAS's overseas business footprint has gradually become more evident. The prospectus discloses that revenue from the Company's industrial environmental equipment business is mainly derived from overseas markets. Revenue from this segment increased from approximately RMB31.82 million in 2022 to approximately RMB100 million in 2024, while its gross profit margin increased to 18.9% over the same period. This business has covered multiple overseas markets and has obtained certifications in China, the United States, Europe and Canada, providing conditions and support for cross-regional project execution.Following its listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, USAS is expected to leverage the capital market platform to further consolidate its industry position in the industrial prefabricated steel structure segment. With its established industrial customer base, stable project delivery capabilities and a gradually expanding overseas business footprint, the Company has a practical foundation to continue advancing in undertaking industrial projects, optimising its business structure and enhancing scalable operational capabilities. Hamas Establishes New Terror Regime in Gaza, Recruiting Teens Amid Problematic Election
Hamas is reconstructing a new Gaza terror infrastructure and exploiting the ceasefire with Israel to strengthen its military, reestablish a contentious leadership framework, and enlist a fresh generation of adolescent combatants, according to a prominent national security analyst.Professor [name], a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies and the Misgav Institute, informed Digital that the halt in hostilities has provided Hamas with breathing space to reorganize."Everything that is happening will continue happening as long as Hamas continues to effectively control the western part of the Gaza Strip," Michael stated."Generally speaking, Hamas now has full freedom of movement," he cautioned.Since Israeli forces withdrew from portions of Gaza in October under a newly established ceasefire arrangement, Hamas has moved to occupy the resulting power vacuum. At that time, police forces reappeared on the streets while Hamas fighters targeted and Various reports point to significant sections of Gaza, including regions formerly patrolled by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).A December report from the determined that Hamas is "actively reconstructing its terror regime" across nearly half of its controlled territory.Hamas is also preparing to following the deaths of Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar, the architect of the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel.According to The Jerusalem Post, senior Hamas leaders Khalil al-Hayya and Khaled Mashaal are the leading candidates, with Hayya viewed as the frontrunner due to his popularity in Gaza and his involvement in the West Bank.Michael indicated that the leadership contest is improbable to change Hamas's already perilous trajectory."Both prospective leaders present issues," he remarked. "Each individual, in his distinct manner, is regarded as more militant and radical in his Gaza-focused orientation and his endorsement of armed resistance."Even Mashaal, frequently characterized as having a more political orientation, "still supports the continuation of armed resistance," Michael added."Regarding Hamas, it doesn't truly matter who becomes the next ."Michael identified one of the most concerning developments as Hamas's increasing success in enlisting adolescents during the ceasefire period."It has become very easy for Hamas to now because they effectively dominate the western portion of the Gaza Strip," he noted, adding that Hamas has emerged as "the most dependable employer in the Gaza Strip," providing modest wages to boys as young as sixteen or seventeen."Joining Hamas appears to be a very natural choice for them, as some have also lost family members, creating a motive for vengeance.""They might also prefer to inhabit bully-type neighborhoods, like in the " he said.Michael suggested that because Hamas possesses "full freedom of movement, they have also been .""They also to the various districts in Gaza and are rebuilding their governmental and military reserves," Michael added.
Trump meets with Zelenskyy; discussions could pave the way for the first Zelenskyy-Putin call in five years: source
A source familiar with the discussions stated that Sunday’s talks between President Donald Trump and could clear the path for the first phone call between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin in over five years. While the Mar-a-Lago gathering was positioned as a step forward in the peace initiative led by Trump, the source also noted that securing a direct Zelenskyy-Putin call would be a "diplomatic victory" for the president."If Putin had joined a call on Sunday, this would have been the biggest achievement in preparing for peace talks and the first real step in the peace process," the source told Digital on condition of anonymity."This would be a diplomatic victory for President Trump.""Trump appears to be the most effective mediator because Putin and Zelenskyy view each other emotionally, which is a challenge."Trump confirmed on Sunday that he had spoken with Putin before the Zelenskyy meeting, describing the conversation as "good and very productive" in a Truth Social post."I truly believe we have the foundations of a deal," Trump told reporters while standing next to Zelenskyy after the Ukrainian leader arrived in Florida on Sunday, adding he thinks the process can "move very quickly.""I think we’re in the final stages of discussions, and we’ll see what happens," Trump said."Otherwise, it’s going to drag on for a long time. Either it will end, or it will continue for a long time, and millions more people will be killed," the president added. The meeting came days after Zelenskyy also mentioned he had a "good conversation" with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, both of whom were present on Sunday. As Zelenskyy prepared for Sunday’s meeting, the source said the Ukrainian leader was likely feeling anxious."Zelenskyy is usually very nervous before such talks with President Trump," the source said. "He focuses intensely for long periods and studies notes prepared by the International Policy Department and the Foreign Ministry."Sunday also marked the third in-person meeting between since Trump returned to office. The source said the central topic of discussion was a U.S.-backed 20-point peace plan developed over weeks of negotiations, which requires compromises from Kyiv and Moscow to engage and possibly speak directly with Zelenskyy."The main obstacle is that Putin has refused to talk to Zelenskyy since July 2020, when they discussed the Wagner scandal and the failed operation to detain Russian Wagner militants.""After that, Zelenskyy tried repeatedly to talk to Putin, but he declined.""There were opportunities for a conversation in August and September 2024, but they vanished again when Ukraine invaded the Kursk region," the source said. The last direct contact between the two leaders followed a botched Ukrainian operation targeting Russian Wagner mercenaries.Ukrainian intelligence lured the mercenaries to Belarus and planned to intercept them on their way from Minsk to Istanbul, but the men were arrested first, per ."That final call between Zelenskyy and Putin happened as Ukraine was trying to capture a group of Russian Wagner fighters," the source said. "The operation failed."Even before communication completely broke down, relations between the two leaders were strained, the source noted."Before that 2020 incident, calls between Zelenskyy and Putin were never friendly, and there was always tension. Putin was always quiet during talks, and Zelenskyy tried to build a rapport.""Zelenskyy always acted deferentially toward Putin and pretended to be in a good mood, almost like he was performing a role on stage," the source explained."He talked a lot and read from his notes, afraid of forgetting something. Sometimes he would stumble over words or lose track of punctuation.""When Putin stayed silent, Zelenskyy would always ask politely, ‘What do you think, Vladimir Vladimirovich?’""Putin was just never talkative," the source said. The Florida talks occurred as Kyiv signaled a possible shift in its negotiating stance. Zelenskyy has said the 20-point plan, which is 90% complete, could include limited Ukrainian troop withdrawals from parts of eastern Ukraine without formally recognizing Russian control, along with creating demilitarized zones. He also proposed putting the plan to a national referendum if Moscow agrees to a 60-day ceasefire.Zelenskyy has taken a firm stance on security guarantees, insisting Ukraine needs legally binding assurances from the U.S. to deter future Russian aggression."For us, it’s very important to send a signal that we want legally binding security guarantees," Zelenskyy told Ukrainian journalists Saturday. "This mainly depends on President Trump," he added."Ukraine is willing to compromise to stop this war," Zelenskyy also wrote on X this weekend."For us, priority number one—or the only priority—is ending the war. Our priority is peace. We need to be strong at the negotiating table. To be strong, we need support from the world: Europe and the United States."Digital has reached out to the Kremlin and President Zelenskyy’s office for comment.
Thirty Years Ago, An SNES-Exclusive Title Perfected A Forgotten Trilogy
CapcomThe old adage holds that good things come in threes. We can point to countless film trilogies—from The Dark Knight to The Lord of the Rings—but video game trilogies have their own rightful place too. The key difference? Most wrap up after three entries, but if a series gains enough success to warrant two sequels, you can usually squeeze out a few more installments. Of course, not all such games are created equal. And thirty years ago, the SNES played host to the conclusion of a trilogy now hailed as a genre-defining masterpiece. When Final Fight 3 launched on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in late 1995, it didn’t arrive as a blockbuster follow-up to the arcade legend before it; instead, it served as a swan song for Capcom’s 16-bit beat ’em up endeavors. Released in Japan as Final Fight Tough, the game was the third entry developed exclusively for the SNES. It retained the fan-favorite energy of brawling your way to the right, plus fresh innovations that proved Capcom still had its creative edge—even if the beat ’em up genre was on the decline. To understand Final Fight 3, it helps to start with the franchise that spawned it. The original Final Fight debuted in arcades in 1989—a gritty, side-scrolling brawler that helped define the beat ’em up genre. Its highly addictive formula blended selectable protagonists, distinct attack styles, and cooperative play. The game’s success in arcades and on home consoles like the SNES laid the groundwork for a decade of imitators and genre staples such as Sega’s Streets of Rage and Konami’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Chances are, if you’ve ever punched your way through a game, it owes a debt to Final Fight.Final Fight 3 faced the tricky task of sustaining momentum at a time when the beat ’em up’s mainstream appeal was fading. By 1995, arcades were shifting toward one-on-one fighters and 3D action titles, while home consoles were transitioning to fifth-generation systems with polygonal 3D graphics. Unlike the original Final Fight—which got an arcade release before being ported to consoles—both Final Fight 2 and Final Fight 3 never made it to coin-op cabinets. This SNES exclusivity was part technical, part strategic: the SNES was nearing the end of its lifecycle but still boasted a massive installed base Capcom could reliably target.Even a strong ad campaign couldn’t stir excitement in an audience that had grown tired of beat ‘em ups. | CapcomHelmed by producer Tokuro Fujiwara, the development team was aware of these market realities. While retaining the core beat ’em up mechanics fans expected, Final Fight 3 introduced features to expand the genre’s formula. New characters Lucia (a martial arts-proficient police detective) and Dean (a balanced brawler with unique reach) joined series staples Guy and Mike Haggar, diversifying playstyles and encouraging varied combat approaches. The game also added branching paths and multiple endings, boosting replayability in an era when linear side-scrolling beat ’em ups were often criticized for being repetitive.Perhaps the most forward-thinking gameplay evolution was the inclusion of special command moves and a Super Move gauge drawn from Capcom’s Super Street Fighter II Turbo. These inputs and meters added strategic layers to what had traditionally been a button-mashing experience. Though these systems weren’t revolutionary in the broader context of 1990s action games, they were significant for side-scrolling beat ’em ups and later reappeared in revamped genre classics like Streets of Rage 4 and River City Girls.Yet for all these refinements, Final Fight 3 suffered from an unforgiving release window. By the time it shipped, gamers’ appetite for traditional beat ’em ups had waned. Critics at the time acknowledged Capcom’s technical polish and expanded moveset but largely concluded it was “more of the same” rather than a genre reinvention. It arrived in the shadow of its predecessors and during the twilight of 16-bit consoles, making it a cult favorite instead of a smash hit.Ah, the 90s—when a sleeveless gi was considered acceptable workplace attire. | CapcomStill, Final Fight 3’s contributions shouldn’t be understated. It kept a beloved franchise alive during a tough transitional period in gaming history, preserving Metro City’s streets and characters for future generations to rediscover. Lucia’s later inclusion in Street Fighter V attests to the enduring charm of this often-overlooked franchise. Its 2013 re-release on the Wii U marks its last appearance on modern hardware, as decades-old exclusivity contracts currently block its release on the Virtual Console.Final Fight 3 stands as a bittersweet tribute to a genre both beloved and beleaguered. It may not have become a household name, but it captured the essence of classic beat ’em ups while pushing the formula forward. For those who fondly remember the SNES era, it remains a fitting final chapter in Final Fight’s beat ’em up lineage and an ambitious conclusion to the series.
Peacock Has Just Quietly Unveiled A Deceptively Clever Cyberpunk Thriller With A Compelling Premise
PeacockTrust is a scarce commodity in spy narratives. Whether exploring the works of John le Carré or Ian Fleming, the heart of a top-tier spy story lies in making you question if everyone is on the brink of betraying one another. Since most characters in these tales can’t read minds, the true motives behind intelligence leaks often remain shrouded in mystery. But what if a spy story—one in the vein of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy—included a distinct element? What if the concept of constant surveillance were pushed to the next logical sci-fi extreme? What if a spy’s own brain could be hacked? This serves as the core premise of Peacock’s sleek new series, The Copenhagen Test, which drops all eight episodes on December 27. The show features Simu Liu in a role unlike any you’ve seen him in before, standing out as one of the most intriguing new spy series in a somewhat saturated field. As Alexander Hale, Liu delivers one of his strongest performances yet, portraying a low-key, affable secret agent working for a watchdog intelligence group named “The Orphanage.” However, the series’ prologue reveals that Hale was once a special forces soldier. During a specific mission, he received unusual orders: Rescue only one hostage for a helicopter extraction, with priority given to an American citizen. Instead, Hale chose to save a non-American child over an American woman—a detail that grows increasingly significant as the story unfolds. Why? Though The Copenhagen Test later reveals that, as an Orphanage agent, Hale’s brain has been hacked by an enemy group, the psychological trial he faced in that hostage situation five years prior was entirely analog—no cyberpunk elements required. This is vital, as it grounds the series in plausibility before introducing the eye-opening premise that Hale has a hidden Wi-Fi signal in his brain, transmitting everything he sees and hears.Naturally, this premise comes with obvious limitations. What happens when Hale is in an area with poor Wi-Fi, like a subway or basement? The series provides answers, using these “real-world” moments to have Hale engage in what passes for normal interactions. This layered approach is shrewd. Similar to a le Carré-style narrative, the “good guys” are aware of the hack and aim to keep it active to uncover how it occurred. Yet the twist lies in Hale’s pairing with a handler named Michelle (Melissa Barrera), who, it turns out, was the woman from that fake loyalty test five years ago. Thus, the cyberpunk series doesn’t rely on its tech premise to evoke the constant, uneasy paranoia in Hale’s mind; much of the double-crossing and espionage complexity stems from characters serving multiple masters. If this sounds confusing or hard to follow, that’s partly the point. Refreshingly, The Copenhagen Test demands your full attention and won’t reward casual viewing—if you zone out or scroll on your phone, you won’t get much out of it. Brief glances, prolonged eye contact, and offhand remarks all carry weight, as none of these details are truly insignificant.Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera in The Copenhagen Test. | PeacockCrafted by Thomas Brandon (with Jennifer Yale serving as co-showrunner), The Copenhagen Test often feels more akin to a novel than a television series. This is a strength, though its hyper-detailed nature may turn off viewers seeking something on par with Black Doves. Instead, The Copenhagen Test aligns more closely with The Agency, albeit with a slightly heightened sense of reality, as its core premise requires a small suspension of disbelief. The twists and turns of The Copenhagen Test might not earn it the title of the greatest spy show or cyberpunk series of all time. But when these genres collide, the series masterfully blends both, delivering a story that—if you’re engaged—you won’t want to stop watching. The Copenhagen Test is streaming on Peacock now.
Clash over UK flags amid foreign flag displays; citizens resist woke policies transforming Britain
LONDON: The dispute over British identity and the national flag is the latest issue deepening political divisions in the United Kingdom in 2025. As the Labour government faces growing criticism on multiple fronts—from curbing free speech to its immigration policies—many Britons are anxious about their country’s future. The issue simmered over the summer amid concerns of a widening rift between ruling elites and the public focused on the national flag. While the debate has dragged on for years, it gained new momentum after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, mass terror attack on Israel sparked anti-Israel protests, leading to a proliferation of Palestinian flags across Britain.Tensions flared further over the display of Palestinian flags on public buildings, with critics arguing this amounts to abandoning traditional British values and that immigrant communities are dictating local norms. Several major city councils—all with large immigrant populations, including Bradford and others—yielded to public pressure last month and raised the Palestinian flag to mark the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People."There's only one flag that should be flying on public buildings in the U.K., and I include the home nations of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and that's the Union flag. We need to start cohering around national stories and symbols, and the flag is the simplest, most visual, visceral way of doing that," Colin Brazier, a commentator on British culture, told Digital.Brazier is calling for a "strategy of national cohesion" that would ban foreign flags on taxpayer-funded buildings. He said Britain should follow America’s nation-building model as the U.K. grapples with "imported disintegration" and seeks to return to its core values.Current guidance indicates councils should prioritize the Union flag.In August, a group of concerned citizens launched ‘Operation Raise the Colours,’ urging people to display flags in their homes and daily lives to rally Britons. The online movement encouraged continued display of England’s St. George's Cross and the Union Jack.Yet the sudden resurgence of British and English flags has been met with suspicion and criticism from the left, where many objecting to the flag proliferation claim they symbolize anti-immigration and far-right sentiment.Critics warn the U.K. is growing increasingly divided—so much so that flying the Union flag in public is now controversial—and that parts of the country seem more focused on causes thousands of miles away. The flag controversy persisted after Prime Minister Keir Starmer recognized a Palestinian state in September. Days later, Starmer delivered an impassioned speech at the Labour Party’s annual conference as his center-left party pushed back against claims it had abandoned patriotism.Speaking to flag-waving supporters, Starmer sought to revive his party’s patriotic roots, telling a cheering crowd: "Let’s fly all our flags, conference, because they are our flags, they belong to all of us and we will never surrender them… And with resolve, with respect, with the flag in our hands, we will renew this country." He also clarified the flag belongs to all citizens, noting: "Our flags — flying proudly, as we celebrate differences and oppose racism."Opposition politicians quickly dismissed Starmer's flag speech, with Lee Anderson, Reform’s chief whip and a Member of Parliament, saying: "You’re more likely to see a Labour member fly the flag of Palestine than a St. George’s flag. That tells you all you need to know," the Daily Telegraph reported. While many councils ignored Digital's request for comment, Belfast City Council in Northern Ireland justified its decision by stating the flag was hoisted "In recognition of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, to erect the national flag of Palestine above the City Hall on the next available day from midnight."This issue is also seen as a symbol of shifting power. Brazier lamented the government’s indifferent attitude toward immigration, saying "importing 10 million people in 25 years has a ruinous impact."According to a March 2025 report by , the country’s Muslim population increased by 1.2 million between 2011 and 2021, accounting for about 6% of the U.K. population.A recent poll found mixed views on the Union flag and England's St. George’s Cross. Fifty-eight percent of 2024 Labour voters perceive the English flag as a racist symbol, compared to just 19% of Conservative voters and 8% of Reform voters. A majority of ethnic minority adults (55%) believe those displaying St. George’s flags are "mostly as a way of expressing anti-migrant and/or anti-ethnic minority sentiment," with 41% saying the same of the Union flag.It also found that "White adults too tend to believe anti-migrant/minority motivations are primarily behind the flag raisings, with 49% saying so for the English flag and 39% for the British one."Another YouGov study finding showed those of Pakistani or Bangladeshi heritage were "the most likely to see racist sentiment in the flag displays. This is particularly marked when it comes to the belief that the England flag has become a racist symbol with 68% of Pakistani/Bangladeshi adults believing this, compared to 54% of those of mixed ethnicity, 51% of those with Indian heritage and 43% of Black adults." Africa’s Christian Crisis: How 2025’s Deadly Attacks Finally Captured Global Attention Following Trump’s Intervention
JOHANNESBURG: Millions of Christians in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) — who are spending Christmas amid reported threats of persecution, kidnapping, sexual violence and, in some cases, death at the hands of Islamist militants — view Friday’s U.S. strikes targeting Islamic State fighters in Nigeria as a genuine indication that President Trump is committed to halting the killing of Africa’s Christian communities. An estimated 16 million Christians across the region have been displaced and torn from their homes. The purported release of 130 abducted schoolchildren in Nigeria this week has done little to ease anxieties as many across the continent attempt to worship during Christmas. This year, however, Digital has highlighted Africa’s crisis multiple times. The situation prompted senior congressional members — including Sen. , R-Texas, Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., and ultimately a leader who threatened to deploy U.S. troops ‘guns-a-blazing’ to Nigeria (the hardest-hit nation) to end the killing of Christians — to bring attention to the violence. This Christmas in Africa, there are reportedly few signs of improvement so far. “The militant Islamist offensive across SSA is a global-scale catastrophe playing out right in front of us,” Henrietta Blyth, CEO of Open Doors UK & Ireland, told Digital this week.Open Doors is a global Christian organization that supports Christians persecuted for their beliefs.Blyth added, “The past year has brought a relentless stream of reports from sub-Saharan Africa — including accounts of , among other things, attacks on defenseless Christian communities.”“At Open Doors, we’ve been sounding the alarm via our Arise Africa campaign. We’ve prayed time and again that this campaign of terror would gain public attention.”Speaking about Nigeria — where thousands of Christians are reported killed annually — and the speeches, articles and posts condemning the violence, Open Doors’ Blyth noted, “There is no indication that this violence has slowed in 2025.”“The absence of global outrage and action on this issue is a moral failure,” South Africa’s Chief Rabbi Dr. Warren Goldstein told Digital. He added, “It appears that black lives don’t matter when they’re killed by Islamists in Africa. The persecution of Christians in Africa must be viewed in its global context: it’s part of a multi-continental jihadist war against ‘infidels’ — Jews and Christians — and against Western values.”He went on, “This is a world war, with Israel at the center of the jihadist firestorm involving Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and others. The Islamist war on Christians in Africa is another front in this global conflict, spanning from Sudan in the north to Mozambique in the south.”Digital has highlighted the regions where persecution has been most severe in Africa in 2025:Per Open Doors, Africa’s most populous country (Nigeria) experienced the worst persecution on the continent in 2025, with “endless accounts of deadly attacks and kidnappings” across its northern and Middle Belt regions — including villages burned, civilians raped, abducted, shot and beheaded. spoke out this year against killings blamed on Muslim Fulani tribespeople in Nigeria’s Benue State in June, stating, “Around 200 people were murdered with extreme cruelty.” Bishop Wilfred Anagbe’s Makurdi Diocese in north-central Nigeria is nearly entirely Christian. However, the persistent and escalating violence prompted him to testify at a congressional hearing in Washington in March. Upon returning to Nigeria, he received threats, and approximately 20 of his parishioners were killed. This war-ravaged nation is 95% Christian, yet its faithful are being targeted by jihadists. In February, terrorists affiliated with the Islamic State-linked ADF group — which seeks to establish a Muslim caliphate in the country’s east — rounded up 70 Christians and allegedly beheaded them inside a church. In September, at least 89 Christians were reportedly massacred by jihadists at a funeral and in nearby fields.Sudan’s estimated 2 million Christians account for roughly 4% of the country’s population,Like other Sudanese citizens, they confront chronic food shortages and the horrors of a years-long war. However, Christians are also purportedly targeted for discrimination and persecution by both parties to the conflict.A senior Sudanese church leader told Digital that in the Darfur city of El Fasher, “Now Christians are eating animal feed and grass. No wheat, no rice — nothing can get in.”Open Doors reports that civil conflict and weak governance have created a lawlessness vacuum that armed militants have exploited. In the far north, Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province frequently launch overnight raids on villages, killing, abducting and destroying property. Thousands have fled their homes to seek refuge in displacement camps.Ali, a villager, stated, “It never stops. I want it to end, but it doesn’t. We have to sleep in the mountains to stay safe.” Located in the continent’s southwest, Mozambique has a 55% Christian population. Islamic State Mozambique is wreaking havoc in the far north, targeting Christian communities, burning their churches and destroying homes. Killings have surged this year, and thousands more are fleeing, joining the over 1.3 million already displaced. In a mass attack on the village of Napala in October, Open Doors reported that militants killed 20 Christians and displaced approximately 2,000 people. A local pastor recounted how four elderly sisters were tied up and burned alive inside a house.Regarding the Nigerian airstrikes, Open Doors’ Henrietta Blyth told Digital, “A military operation like this won’t offer a quick solution to decades of violence. The Nigerian government must pursue long-term solutions that guarantee peace, protect civilians and uphold religious freedom for all.”Chief Rabbi Goldstein concluded, “The West can only win this war if it finds the moral clarity to name it for what it is and recognize all theaters of conflict as part of the same struggle.”
Reports: Iranian president claims his country is in ‘total war’ with the US, Israel and Europe
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that his nation is engaged in what he characterized as a "" with the United States, Israel, and Europe. In an interview published on Saturday by Iranian state media, Pezeshkian expressed his view that Western powers aim to bring Iran "to its knees," as reported."From my perspective, we are in a state of total war with the United States, Israel, and Europe," Pezeshkian said. "They seek to bring our country to its knees."Pezeshkian argued that the current conflict is more complex than the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, noting his country is now under pressure "from every angle," according to The Times of Israel."If one understands it clearly, this war is far more intricate and arduous than that conflict. During the war with Iraq, the situation was straightforward—they fired missiles, and we knew where to target," Pezeshkian said, according to . "Here, they are besieging us across all dimensions, creating challenges for us in terms of daily life, culturally, politically, and in security matters."Despite the strain, Pezeshkian claimed Iran’s military emerged stronger following its June conflict with Israel, as per The Times of Israel."Our esteemed are performing their duties with resolve, and currently, in terms of equipment and personnel, despite all our challenges, they are stronger than they were at the time of the attack. So if they choose to attack again, they will naturally face a more decisive response," he said. The interview with Pezeshkian was released ahead of a planned meeting later this week at Mar-a-Lago between Israeli Prime Minister and President Donald Trump, according to The Jerusalem Post.Tensions remain heightened following a brief but intense air conflict in June initiated by Israel. The fighting resulted in approximately 1,100 deaths in Iran, including senior military commanders and nuclear scientists, while Iranian missile attacks killed 28 people in the Jewish State. On June 22, President announced U.S. forces had launched attacks on Iranian nuclear sites, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan."Our objective was to destroy Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and halt the nuclear threat posed by the world's leading state sponsor of terror," the president said. "Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran's key have been entirely obliterated."A U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Iran and Israel took effect on June 24.Digital's Landon Mion contributed to this report.
85 Years Ago, A Classic Horror Franchise Ditched the Scares
Universal Pictures Horror films have always been characterized by their most iconic figures. The productions from the legendary studio that spearheaded a new era of cinematic horror have become among the most recognizable and frequently imitated works in film history. Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, and the Invisible Man have been reimagined and duplicated innumerable times, frequently by Universal itself. With the Invisible Man series, the studio opted to continue the franchise with a progressive gender-based twist. Helmed by James Whale two years after he directed Frankenstein, The Invisible Man is, like many of Universal's productions, based on a novel by sci-fi icon H.G. Wells. The story follows an eccentric scientist (Claude Rains) whose face, hidden by bandages, raises suspicion in his small town. It's quickly revealed that his experiments have made him invisible, and he doesn't know how to become visible again. The film's main draw for audiences was its special effects, which made Rains vanish from sight—a costly and revolutionary technique that succeeded and turned the movie into a major success. As is typical for any successful horror film, a hit leads to sequels. Seven years later, Universal released The Invisible Man Returns, featuring a young Vincent Price. Subsequently, they shifted genres to a wartime adventure with Invisible Agent, then paired the character with comedians Abbott and Costello. Prior to that, however, they created a gender-swapped version with The Invisible Woman. After all, it had worked for The Bride of Frankenstein. Debuting 85 years ago today, The Invisible Woman features Virginia Bruce as Kitty, a department store model who loses her job and subsequently works for an eccentric scientist seeking a test subject for his new invisibility device. Comedic chaos follows, and Kitty seeks revenge on her former employer, but complications arise when criminals become involved and attempt to steal the invisibility machine for their own plans. Comedy has always been present in the Invisible Man series; the original film devotes a surprising portion of its brief runtime to Claude Rains giggling like a schoolgirl while performing childish pranks while naked. The Invisible Woman abandons horror completely and dives straight into screwball comedy. While many jokes involve typical invisible-person antics, numerous others revolve around the risqué implications of an unseen naked woman. The film isn't particularly explicit, being made under the Hays Code, but it doesn't hide its intentions. Whereas Claude Rains's nudity in The Invisible Man was purely comical, here there's a suggestive quality, even though nothing is actually shown. This is about as threatening as the Invisible Woman gets. | Universal Pictures The majority of the humor is rather clichéd, and the visual effects don't match the quality of earlier installments, but as a piece of innocuous B-movie fun, The Invisible Woman accomplishes its goals. It's lighthearted and low-stakes, concluding with a charming happy ending that includes an invisible infant. The renowned John Barrymore clearly enjoys overacting as a mad scientist, and Margaret Hamilton—famous as the Wicked Witch of the West—makes a cameo appearance. Nevertheless, the film seems to miss an opportunity by not making its protagonist as conniving as her male counterparts. While Claude Rains's performance is silly, his film is filled with cynicism, providing a biting quality that emphasizes the horror of its premise. In contrast, Kitty simply enjoys herself before settling into domestic life as a wife and mother. The whole thing is remarkably naive. Why not let her emulate characters like Dracula's daughter or the She-Wolf of London and become a villain? Subsequent remakes and reinterpretations of the Invisible Man story would concentrate more on the dark ramifications of its scientific concept. Paul Verhoeven's Hollow Man and Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man were grim narratives about toxic masculinity that employed the sci-fi premise to examine patriarchal oppression. Invisibility may have driven these men insane, but it also granted them license to harm and devastate. What would a female version of this entail? Would it address how sexism frequently renders women invisible? Could there be a version where an invisible woman is a terrifying presence? This isn't inconceivable, but it would be distinctly different. In 2019, Universal revealed plans to remake The Invisible Woman, with Elizabeth Banks set to direct and Erin Cressida Wilson to write the screenplay. Few details emerged about the project before it was abandoned, but it was described as "wildly different" from Wannell's film. Perhaps it wouldn't have been horror at all, but regardless, it's fascinating that a speculative idea like invisibility exposes a gender-based division.
Nine arrested in Italy for allegedly funnelling more than $8 million to Hamas via charities
Nine individuals connected to three nonprofit organizations have been detained by Italian officials, accused of collecting millions of dollars on behalf of .Approximately 7 million euros ($8.2 million) was allegedly diverted by the accused to "associations located in Gaza, the Palestinian territories, or Israel, that are owned, controlled, or connected to Hamas," anti-terrorism prosecutors stated in a release, as reported by .While the charities claimed to gather contributions "for humanitarian aid for the Palestinian population," over 71% of the money was allocated for direct funding of Hamas or groups connected to the terrorist organization, as police sources indicated to . The publication added that authorities alleged portions of the funds reached "relatives involved in terrorist acts."Among those taken into custody was Mohammad Hannoun, head of the Palestinian Association in Italy, according to AP reporting based on prosecutor statements. Prosecutors characterized Hannoun as leading "the Italian branch of the Hamas organization," the news agency noted. The money was transferred to the terrorist group using "triangulation schemes" through wire transfers or via foreign-based organizations to Gaza-based associations that have been designated due to their connections with Hamas, according to AP reports.Interior Minister Matteo Paintedosi described the arrests as "important and significant," saying they "revealed conduct and operations that, while presented as efforts to assist the Palestinian people, actually hid backing for and involvement in ."Hamas has governed the Gaza Strip since 2006 and is regarded as a terrorist group by numerous countries and international bodies. The United States, United Kingdom, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and the European Union are among those labeling Hamas a terrorist organization. 15 injured in Japan factory stabbing spree and chemical attack
Fifteen individuals were injured, and authorities have detained a suspect following an incident at a tire factory in central Japan. Officials stated that the 38-year-old assailant allegedly stabbed eight people and injured seven others with a substance believed to be bleach on Friday at a Yokohama Rubber Co. facility in Mishima. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though the suspect is thought to be a former factory employee, according to Kyodo news agency citing investigative sources. The Asahi newspaper reported that the suspect was armed with a survival knife and wore what appeared to be a gas mask. The Fujisan Nanto Fire Department informed The Associated Press that five of the stabbing victims were in serious condition. Photographs and video footage from the scene showed emergency responders converging on the factory. Shizuoka prefecture police announced the arrest for alleged attempted murder. Media reports indicated that all stabbing victims remained conscious while being transported to local hospitals. The fire department reported that the seven other individuals injured by bleach thrown during the attack were also hospitalized.
Zelenskyy says latest Russian attack on Ukraine reveals Putin’s ‘true attitude’ prior to Trump meeting
A new attack on Kyiv involving hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles lays bare the "true attitude of Putin and his inner circle," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Saturday as he prepared to meet with President Donald Trump. The overnight blitz in Ukraine’s capital killed at least one person and injured 27, local authorities told the Associated Press. This unfolded as Zelenskyy is set to meet Trump in Florida on Sunday, where he said he will share a plan to end the conflict with Russia."Another Russian attack is still ongoing: since last night, there have been almost 500 drones – a large number of ‘shaheds’ – as well as 40 missiles, including Kinzhals. The primary target is Kyiv – energy facilities and civilian infrastructure," Zelenskyy posted on X Saturday morning. "Regrettably, there have been hits, and ordinary residential buildings have been damaged. Rescuers are searching for a person trapped under the rubble of one of them.""There have been many questions over the past few days – so where is Russia’s response to the proposals to end the war offered by the United States and the world? Russian representatives engage in lengthy talks, but in reality, Kinzhals and ‘shaheds’ speak for them. This is the true attitude of Putin and his inner circle," Zelenskyy continued. "They do not want to end the war and aim to use every opportunity to cause Ukraine even greater suffering and increase their pressure on others around the world."Zelenskyy also remarked Saturday that, "If Russia turns even the Christmas and New Year period into a time of destroyed homes and burned apartments, of ruined power plants, then this sick activity can only be responded to with truly strong steps.""The United States has this capability. Europe has this capability. Many of our partners have this capability. The key is to use it," he asserted.Ahead of his meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump has said he will insist on a peace deal to end the conflict."He doesn’t have anything until I approve it," Trump stated. "So we’ll see what he’s got."The Russian Defense Ministry announced Saturday that it carried out a "massive strike" overnight, using "long-range precision-guided weapons from land, air, and sea, including Kinzhal hypersonic aeroballistic missiles" and drones, targeting energy infrastructure facilities "used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces" as well as "Ukrainian military-industrial complex enterprises."The ministry noted the strike was in response to Ukraine’s attacks on "civilian objects" in Russia.Earlier Saturday, the ministry reported its air defenses shot down seven Ukrainian drones overnight over the Russian regions of Krasnodar and Adygeya.Digital’s Diana Stancey and
2025: Trump’s peace through strength – wars stopped, rivals came to the table
He came into 2025 vowing to put an end to wars and refocus U.S. foreign policy on what he often called "peace through strength."All year long, Trump portrayed his diplomatic work as centered on peace, telling reporters, "We believe we have a path to peace," and publicly claiming his track record deserved a Nobel Peace Prize. The U.S. State Department mirrored that narrative in its year-end review of diplomatic actions, emphasizing projects it said were meant to "secure peace globally."By the end of 2025, a number of conflicts had made notable diplomatic headway, though others continued to face challenges due to years of animosity and bloodshed. The year’s most impactful diplomatic move came in early October, when the Trump administration assisted between Israel and Hamas. The deal stopped large-scale fighting after months of heavy combat and allowed for the release of all remaining hostages from Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel—except for the body of Ron Gvili, which is still held by Hamas terrorists. The administration later pointed to the ceasefire as a key part of its 2025 diplomatic achievements. Though the truce mostly held until year’s end, critical issues like Gaza’s long-term governance, demilitarization, enforcement measures, and rebuilding the enclave after widespread destruction and displacement remained unaddressed. U.S. officials kept collaborating with regional partners on next steps as fighting paused, and Israel’s Netanyahu is set to meet with President Trump next week to discuss Gaza and other matters. In August, Trump welcomed the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan to the White House for a U.S.-mediated aimed at resolving decades of conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. The deal focused on transit routes, economic collaboration, and regional connectivity and was hailed by the administration as a historic move.Even though the historic declaration was signed, putting it into action and achieving deeper reconciliation are still in progress. stayed the most ambitious and hard-to-achieve peace goal of Trump’s 2025 agenda. The year began with Trump asserting the war could be ended via direct U.S. involvement and influence over both Kyiv and Moscow. Diplomacy ramped up in August, when Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska—a summit the White House described as a test of whether personal diplomacy could break a settlement deadlock. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was welcomed to the White House, where Trump repeated U.S. support for Ukraine but noted that any peace would demand tough compromises. U.S. officials looked into security guarantees and economic incentives, while steering clear of public promises on borders or NATO membership.By December, talks picked up speed. Ukraine joined new rounds of U.S.-led negotiations, and Trump told reporters the sides were "getting close to something." On Christmas, Zelenskyy said had created a 20-point plan and supporting documents that include security guarantees involving Ukraine, the U.S., and European partners. He admitted the framework wasn’t perfect but called it a concrete step forward. Zelenskyy is said to be preparing a visit to meet with President Trump, possibly as early as Sunday.Bloomberg reported that Russia sees the 20-point plan agreed to by Ukraine and the U.S. as . A source close to the Kremlin said Moscow plans to push for major changes—including more limits on Ukraine’s military—claiming the proposal missing provisions vital to Russia and leaves numerous questions unresolved. In early December, Trump presided over the signing of the Washington Accords for Peace and Prosperity between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. The accord reaffirmed pledges to end decades of conflict and boost economic cooperation via a regional integration framework.By year’s end, Reuters and the Associated Press reported that armed groups were still active in eastern Congo, highlighting the accord’s fragility—even though both sides appeared committed to long-term peace.Following a terrorist attack in Kashmir and retaliatory strikes that sparked fears of escalation, U.S. officials launched emergency diplomatic efforts. Trump announced a ceasefire between the two , preventing a potentially catastrophic escalation between the two nuclear-armed nations. On the sidelines of an ASEAN summit, Trump assisted in mediating a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand after months of border skirmishes. Diplomatic efforts led by ASEAN and backed by outside parties are still underway, but new clashes and mutual blame between keep undermining peace prospects and have caused large-scale displacement and civilian suffering. After recent flare-ups—and with mediation offers from Secretary of State Marco Rubio—a new ceasefire was agreed to on Saturday to end weeks of border fighting. After U.S. and Israeli strikes on , the Trump administration focused on containing escalation and strengthening deterrence. No diplomatic deal came out of it, but the confrontation didn’t spiral into a wider regional war by year’s end.Israel recently warned that Iran could use its ballistic missile drills as a cover for a surprise attack. of the world’s deadliest conflicts. U.S. diplomacy has focused mainly on stopping fighting and expanding humanitarian access rather than negotiating a full peace deal.In December, Saudi Arabia and the U.S. presented Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan with a three-point plan to end the war, facilitate , and transfer power to civilians, per the Sudan Tribune. As the year drew to a close, emerged as the U.S.’s most direct point of confrontation. The administration described its stance as an extension of its broader "peace through strength" policy, even as escalation risks remained. While the White House sought de-escalation and negotiated agreements elsewhere, its approach to Nicolás Maduro depended almost entirely on pressure, not talks. Trump kept portraying Maduro as a criminal threat linked to drug trafficking, accusing him of rejecting Venezuela’s last election results and stealing the presidency. With no diplomatic channel open, the U.S. kept in place broad sanctions and increased efforts against cartel networks tied to the regime. No peace process was visible—but some opposition figures and U.S. allies argued that sustained pressure could still drive political change in 2026 and ultimately speed up Maduro’s ouster.
Stranger Things Season 5’s Emotional Character Scene Was a Major Missed Opportunity
NetflixRegardless of how serious a series may be, shipping communities will inevitably form around it. Even Stranger Things, which centered on a group of actual children, sparked fan speculation about potential romantic pairings. Nearly a decade later, these characters (and particularly the actors portraying them) have matured into young adults.During Season 3, viewers witnessed Will's devastation when Mike declared, “It’s not my fault that you don’t like girls,” while Season 4 illustrated how physical separation from Mike impacted Will beyond mere friendship. Though Will's non-heterosexual identity appears clear today, such a revelation carried far greater weight in the 1980s setting.Though the final season contained all the necessary components for a meaningful narrative, the actual execution resulted in a jarring, peculiar scene that seemed both unexpected and belated. What exactly failed? No single factor bears responsibility; rather, multiple unfortunate elements converged. Here’s a breakdown of everything that misfired in this moment.Outed By VecnaWill interrupts the preparations for the climactic battle against Vecna to reveal his truth to friends, not from personal readiness, but from fear that Vecna could weaponize his secrets. This represents an atypical and psychologically unhealthy scenario. Though technically self-initiated, Will's disclosure stems from perceived necessity rather than desire, aiming to deprive Vecna of emotional leverage.“Today, Vecna showed me what would happen if I did this, if I told you guys the truth,” he says. “And I know none of that has happened, and Vecna can’t see into the future. But he can see into our minds, and he knows things. And it just felt so real. It felt so real.”Thus, Will's revelation wasn't driven by personal preparedness but by a desire to eliminate a potential It’s A Wonderful Life-style manipulation by Vecna, removing another avenue for psychological torment. This constitutes a coerced confession. Will’s coming out is motivated by Vecna, but is that the best choice? | NetflixThe Tammy ProblemThe declaration that reverberated throughout the "Byler" shipping community (Will Byers/Mike Wheeler, for the uninitiated) confirmed Will's Season 4 crush on Mike. However, his wording proves notably specific: “I had this… this crush on someone, even though I know… I know they’re not like me,” he explains. “But… But then I realized he’s just my Tammy. And by Tammy, I mean it was never about him.”Why reference Tammy when Robin alone understands that reference? While it thoughtfully acknowledges her supportive role, Robin's own disclosure status remains ambiguous. Though she's out to Steve, Will only learned of her relationship with Vickie at Season 5's start, suggesting their other friends remain unaware. Connecting Robin to Tammy could inadvertently expose her identity.I’m Just Like You Acknowledging the 1987 setting and the LGBTQ community's limited visibility compared to today, the "nothing's changed" trope remains among the most problematic clichés in coming-out narratives. This scene heavily relies on it, featuring Will insisting he still enjoys late-night D&D sessions, milkshake outings, and movie rentals.Yet these activities rarely appear in Stranger Things, where world-saving typically takes precedence, rendering these claims hollow. Moreover, how does Will's romantic attraction alter any of this? While acknowledging continuity isn't inherently flawed, devoting extensive lines to nostalgic references of unseen activities for years suggests Will overlooks his fundamental transformation: he's no longer the boy from Mike's basement. He's developed powers and heightened awareness. He's different, possessing unique strengths. It’s great that Will has so much support, but it made his coming out way less emotionally intimate. | Netflix The Writing is Just...OffUpon initial viewing, a single descriptor dominated my notes: overwrought. Coming out typically unfolds as a gradual, lengthy journey—starting with self-acceptance, then disclosure to a trusted individual, followed by widening circles. Will's approach resembles a press conference, delivering a monologue that cites activities unfamiliar to half his audience (milkshakes, etc.) or comprehensible to only one person (Tammy), while peripheral characters like Kali and Murray appear without clear purpose. This feels not merely inconsistent with characterization, but genuinely implausible. Stranger Things has demonstrated its capacity for better execution through Robin's coming-out scene with Steve—slightly awkward, minimally prepared, and evidently something she'd internally processed. Truth serum notwithstanding, Robin had clearly completed her personal journey.Given the single remaining episode, the inability to portray the gradual coming-out process common among queer youth is understandable. Nevertheless, the scene feels artificially compelled—by both Vecna's coercion and the writers' constraints—and Will Byers merits a more authentic representation.Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
Israel Becomes First Nation to Recognize Somaliland; Trump Remains Unready
Israel has officially become the first nation to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, representing a major diplomatic milestone. The announcement was made on Friday, Dec. 26, alongside Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Moshe Sa'ar and the President of the Republic of Somaliland. Israel and Somaliland signed a joint declaration "in the spirit of the Abraham Accords," which were mediated by President Trump. In a statement on X, Sa'ar said that ties between Somaliland and Israel have developed through "extensive and ongoing dialogue." According to Sa'ar, full diplomatic relations entail Israel appointing ambassadors and establishing embassies in Somaliland. Somaliland's President, Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, stated that his government "warmly welcomes and deeply appreciates" Israel's decision to recognize Somaliland's sovereignty. "This recognition marks a milestone in Somaliland's long-standing quest for international legitimacy, reaffirming its historical, legal, and moral right to statehood," Abdullahi said. In a Friday release, Somaliland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the decision represents a "constructive contribution to peace, stability, and cooperation" in the region. "The Republic of Somaliland hereby expresses its firm intention to join the Abraham Accords... Somaliland looks forward to engaging with the State of Israel based on formal diplomatic relations and mutual recognition," the ministry stated. Shortly after Israel's decision, a second country reportedly officially recognized Somaliland, leading to questions about whether the U.S. will follow suit. President Trump was reportedly "looking into" recognizing Somaliland in August. Official recognition would give the U.S. a new foothold in the Horn of Africa via an air and sea base near the Red Sea entrance at Berbera Port. When questioned about recognizing the state and potentially resettling Gazans there, Trump told reporters on Aug. 8, "We're looking into that right now." This would position U.S. defense forces directly across from an armed political group known for attacks on Israel and Red Sea shipping, according to reports. Thirty percent of the world's container ship traffic reportedly passes through these waters en route to or from the Suez Canal, according to previous reports. Trump is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu on Monday, Dec. 29, at his Mar-a-Lago residence to discuss "next steps" in the region. Despite earlier discussions, Trump is reportedly "not ready" to embrace Somaliland's independence and was reportedly "unimpressed" by its interest in joining the Abraham Accords. Trump told the New York Post he needs to "study" Netanyahu's proposal and asked from his golf course, "Does anyone know what Somaliland is, really?" "We'll study it. I study a lot of things and always make great decisions, and they turn out to be correct," Trump told the Post. Somalia has been battling Islamist fundamentalist fighters for decades, with ongoing operations against ISIS and al-Shabab terrorists, according to previous digital reporting. The breakaway region has allegedly "eliminated radicalism" and aligned itself with the U.S. Somaliland Minister of the Presidency Khadar Hussein Abdi said that for over three decades, Somaliland has "remained democratic, peaceful, and self-governing — unlike Somalia." "It's time for Somalia to focus on its own challenges and be constructive. The illusion of Somali unity ended long ago." Netanyahu reportedly invited Abdullahi to Israel and "praised his leadership and commitment to promoting stability and peace."

Five Ideal Holiday Games to Play Before the New Year
InsomniacThere aren’t many holiday-themed games. As a medium with experiences that can span several weeks, gaming doesn’t align as well with the fleeting nature of the season as movies do.But that doesn’t mean there aren’t games ideal to play around the holidays, even if they weren’t originally crafted with the season in mind. The ones that do offer a distinct way to celebrate and are perfect for yearly revisits. Let’s explore the games that best embody the quiet, cozy essence of the season.Batman: Arkham OriginsBatman: Arkham Origins has an atmosphere unlike any other in the series. | WB MontrealThe most underappreciated game in the series is also its most festive. Set on Christmas Eve, a young Batman becomes the target of eight trained assassins aiming to end the Dark Knight for a $50 million reward. Batman: Arkham Origins is a more intimate take on the Batman story, focusing on the Caped Crusader’s relatively grounded villains like Black Mask and Deathstroke, and features the series’ best boss fights. The Christmas setting effectively establishes a unique tone, with Gotham’s lonely, snowy streets before the holidays serving as a constant reminder of Bruce Wayne’s commitment to fighting crime.Spider-Man: Miles MoralesSpider-Man: Miles Morales is both a Christmas game and one of the hero’s best video games. | Insomniac GamesNot to be outdone by its DC counterpart, Spider-Man has its own holiday adventure set days before Christmas. also happens to be one of the character’s finest games to date. From its opening scene, Miles Morales is brimming with holiday spirit. Festive lights and snow line the streets and rooftops of this open-world New York City, and swinging through city blocks as light snow falls is a unique experience compared to other Spider-Man games. Its short six-hour runtime means you can finish it before the seasonal mood fades at the start of the new year.BullyIt isn’t a holiday game in the same vein as Batman and Spider-Man, as it begins at the start of the school year. But when the in-game school year reaches winter a few hours into this lighthearted tale of adolescence, it resonates deeply. Bully’s winter segment is likely the most memorable portrayal of the holiday season in gaming. The entire town is covered in snow, which you can use to make snowballs to toss at fellow students and townspeople. Buildings sport holiday-appropriate decorations, stores sell festive items to buy and wear, and everyone in the open world is bundled up.The game’s story even takes an emotional turn, as protagonist Jimmy feels the loneliness of being a child away from home during the holidays. Bully is an exceptional game that perfectly captures both the hardships and joys of winter.Saints Row IVSaints Row 4 is one of the few major games with a Christmas-themed expansion. | VolitionWhile marks the point where the series took a turn, it excels at one thing more than any other game in the series: Christmas. The game’s free downloadable mission, How The Saints Saved Christmas, is as charming as its name suggests. In it, your character reveals they’re a Scrooge: they dislike the songs, gift-giving, and even the idea of Santa. But when Santa Claus is kidnapped, you take on the responsibility of saving the holiday. It’s a sweet, small adventure that references holiday classics like It’s A Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol. And while it’s not the longest DLC, it makes you wonder why more games don’t include such content.Hitman: World of AssassinationHitman’s annual holiday mission is worth revisiting. | IO Interactive might not be the first franchise that comes to mind for holiday games, but the series has a surprising history of celebrating the season. The iconic assassin’s latest game, Hitman: World of Assassination, has turned this into an annual event called “Holiday Hoarders,” available only at this time of year. The event tasks Agent 47 with hunting two Home Alone-style burglars trying to ruin holiday festivities on the game’s Paris level. Players can even unlock holiday-themed outfits for 47, including a Santa suit and an ugly sweater that he pulls off effortlessly. If holiday stress is weighing on you, stepping into the role of gaming’s top assassin to devise creative endings for troublemakers isn’t a bad way to cope.
