Grief signifies more than just sadness; it embodies transformation. It’s a profound experience of loss or change, impacting every part of us and revealing hidden aspects of ourselves. Rather than a simple emotional response, grief acts as a seismic event, reshaping our very essence and creating space for new beginnings. It stretches time, guiding us through the process of relinquishing our past selves, shattered hopes, and cherished illusions. While undeniably painful, grief holds immense power, potentially guiding us back to a state of wholeness if embraced. Despite its constant presence today, grief often goes unacknowledged. The relentless pace of modern life, the pressure to be productive, and the emphasis on performance have overshadowed it. Mourning seems to have become an inconvenience. In a society fixated on moving forward, we've largely forgotten how to truly experience and process sorrow. Historically, grief has been revered as a significant rite of passage. Ancient traditions viewed it not as a problem to be solved, but as a feeling to be experienced. Hindu and Vedic rituals involve entire communities in days or weeks of prayers and mantras. Many Indigenous tribes in the Americas observe grief through communal ceremonies, incorporating crying, singing, storytelling, and symbols of transformation like hair cutting. These acts are not merely symbolic; they serve as energetic pathways, aiding the soul's journey through the transitional space between loss and rebirth. Even Abrahamic faiths have established timelines and structures for grieving. Jewish mourning rituals like shiva provide both the mourner and the community with a framework of presence and reflection. Islam prioritizes prayer and remembrance over several days. These customs emphasize that grief should be honored, not rushed or kept private. However, when cultures abandon these rituals and grief becomes invisible, the consequences can be severe. Consider , where the decline of Shinto and Buddhist death rituals has coincided with a surge in overwork and suicide. The body recognizes when grief is suppressed, and the spirit remembers what the mind tries to ignore. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 highlighted this reality. In its aftermath, we grieve not only for lost lives but also for the futures we envisioned. The pandemic exposed a collective pain that had long been buried beneath deadlines, distractions, and digital overload. Combined with the ongoing pressures of burnout, racial injustice, economic instability, and social division, we are left with a profound, unspoken suffering that lingers beneath the surface. We struggle to keep pace in a world that refuses to slow down, even as our hearts are breaking. Millennials and Gen Z are particularly affected. The "quiet quitting" phenomenon is not about laziness but rather spiritual exhaustion. It represents a choice to prioritize peace over performing in a system that devalues their humanity. The workplace, once a source of identity and community, has become another source of isolation. This disconnection allows grief to fester, potentially leading to illness. Suppressing grief leads to its accumulation within the nervous system, cells, and body's memory. Research indicates that chronic, unresolved grief weakens the immune system, disrupts sleep and digestion, and increases the risk of long-term mental health issues. In extreme instances, grief can even cause physical heart problems, such as takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as "broken heart syndrome." Ignoring grief comes at a significant cost. However, an alternative approach exists. We need new ways to grieve that emphasize community, ritual, and reverence, rather than isolation or shame. We can also choose to confront our grief directly by scheduling time to sit with sorrow. We can create sacred spaces for grieving through actions such as lighting candles, listening to meaningful music, crying, screaming, journaling, and moving our bodies to release pent-up emotions. Grief, while deeply personal, does not have to be experienced alone. Sharing our sadness with others, even in small ways, can be powerful – simply acknowledging that difficult things have happened. Sharing fragments of our truth can create new neural pathways in the brain and heart, making connection possible and fostering a new kind of intimacy based on shared experiences. Whether through trusted friendships, support groups, or spaces specifically for those navigating loss, community provides support and understanding. This allows us to transform from victims of loss into active participants in our own healing. Acknowledging and releasing grief can facilitate a reconnection with nature. Allowing the wind to touch our skin, the earth to ground our steps, and the sun to remind us that life continues. We can reintegrate, knowing that we have released energy and honored our truth. This is how we begin again and transform pain and confusion into strength. Now more than ever, we need to reclaim grief as a sacred practice, remembering the wisdom of our ancestors: grief is not separate from life but an integral part of it. We are being called back to our humanity – to our hearts, our tenderness, and our capacity for compassion. To honor grief is to honor the complexity of the human experience, cultivating a reverence for the inevitable flow of emotions, including joy, both individually and collectively. Lessons from the Holocaust
As the world navigates another turbulent year, it marks the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust's end. Commemorations commenced on January 27, with global leaders and survivors gathering in Oświęcim, Poland, to commemorate the occasion. This month marks the anniversaries of the liberation of Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, and Dachau, alongside Yom HaShoah on April 24. Memorial events will take place at over 175 Holocaust centers and museums in North America, as well as thousands of other memorials, schools, and communities worldwide. While remembering is crucial, what are the enduring lessons of the Holocaust? This question is challenging to answer, given the frequent yet often superficial references to the Holocaust, juxtaposed with a perceived decline in detailed knowledge. Nevertheless, several significant lessons merit revisiting. Firstly, atrocities like the Holocaust require specific enabling conditions. They frequently occur in states that are failing. The Weimar Republic's failure to uphold liberal democratic values and respectful dialogue created a breeding ground for Nazism. The Nazi Party gained power democratically, ironically, on a platform that denigrated individual worth, promoted harmful stereotypes, romanticized a fabricated past, and used modern communication to spread propaganda and recruit followers. Once in power, the party shifted towards authoritarianism, subverting national institutions, the media, civil service, academia, and the legal system to align the state with its ideology and goals. Certainly, numerous countries since 1945 have had ruling parties with similar traits, but without leading to genocide. The Holocaust required further elements: widespread apathy, elite complicity, and international community failure. Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel's warning against indifference was prescient: turning inward during conflict hinders courage and enables the exploitation of the vulnerable. In perpetrator nations, most were passive bystanders, but significant participation came from elites, including artists, academics, clergy, media figures, business leaders, and even doctors. Just as the elites faltered, so did the international order. Consider the Munich Agreement, which allowed Nazi Germany to annex parts of Czechoslovakia, the Evian Conference where the U.S. and other nations refused to accept more Jewish refugees, or the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact which paved the way for Germany and the Soviet Union to occupy and divide Poland in 1939. These failures emboldened fascism and its associated crimes. Finally, and most importantly, the Holocaust was fueled by antisemitism, an ancient hatred pervasive across all societal levels. Millennia of animosity toward Jews had already resulted in countless deaths. Under authoritarianism, this hatred provided the Nazis with a framework to enlist willing participants and collaborators, and for large segments of the population to ignore or participate in violence against Jews. We all have the potential to become perpetrators or passive accomplices to such crimes. Recognizing this possibility requires understanding that the Holocaust happened to real individuals with hopes, dreams, flaws, and inherent humanity. This realization is essential, which is why Holocaust museums worldwide connect visitors to the victims and survivors. By revealing the horrors of the past, they offer a lens through which to view the future, uniting Jews and non-Jews in confronting this history and its implications. Truly learning from the Holocaust demands engaging with the lived experiences of those who endured it. This leads to a crucial final point: understanding this history makes one unable to tolerate the conditions that enabled the Holocaust, including antisemitism. Studying this topic transforms us, heightening awareness of hate's signs and forms, and other threats to peace. To act on this knowledge, we must reject cynicism and indifference. Failure to do so, as Holocaust survivor and intellectual Primo Levi warned, risks granting the Nazis a posthumous victory. To prevent this, we must understand the past, recognize its relevance to our future, and remember the victims and survivors of the Holocaust in ways that create the world they deserved, not the one they were forced to experience.

Ex-South Korean President Moon Jae-in Indicted on Bribery Allegations
SEOUL, South Korea — On Thursday, South Korean prosecutors charged former President Moon Jae-in, a liberal, with bribery. They allege that a low-cost airline provided his son-in-law with a well-compensated, but essentially non-existent, job while Moon was in office. Moon's indictment means he joins many South Korean leaders who have faced trials or scandals either near the end of their presidencies or after their terms concluded. Prosecutors claim that Moon, who was president from 2017 to 2022, accepted bribes totaling 217 million won ($151,705) from Lee Sang-jik, the founder of Thai Eastar Jet, a budget airline. These bribes allegedly took the form of salary, housing costs, and other financial support given to Moon's then-son-in-law between 2018 and 2020. South Korean news outlets have reported that Moon's daughter and her husband divorced in 2021. The Jeonju District Prosecutors’ Office stated that Lee was also indicted for bribing Moon and for breach of trust. According to the prosecutors, Moon's former son-in-law was hired as a director at Lee’s company in Thailand, even without prior experience in the airline industry. They stated he spent little time at the company’s Thailand office and performed only minor tasks, while claiming to work remotely from South Korea. The prosecutors' office stated they found no proof that Moon provided political favors for Lee, an individual involved in Moon's campaign. However, they believe Lee likely anticipated some form of repayment for his assistance. Lee was later appointed as the head of the state-funded Korea SME and Startups Agency and was nominated by Moon’s party to run for parliament during Moon's presidency. However, the prosecutors stated they have not found any evidence suggesting Moon aided Lee in securing these positions. There has been no immediate comment from Moon. Moon's indictment occurs prior to the upcoming South Korean presidential election on June 3, which will determine the successor to conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office due to a controversial imposition of martial law. It remains uncertain whether Moon's indictment will impact the chances of liberals regaining the presidency. Sources suggest that a liberal presidential candidate is currently favored to win the vote, as conservatives remain disorganized following Yoon's removal. However, the candidate also faces criminal trials related to allegations of corruption and other offenses. XPRIZE Winner Mati Carbon’s Dual Mission: Helping Farmers and Removing CO2
Mati Carbon is striving to eliminate 100 million metric tons of atmospheric CO2 by 2040 while simultaneously aiding 100 million farmers in the Global South. Mati participated in a four-year global contest challenging teams to develop and demonstrate scalable carbon removal solutions. They were awarded the XPrize Carbon Removal, a $50 million prize intended to help the company expand its operations. The award was announced at the TIME100 Summit on April 23. Nikki Batchelor, executive director of XPRIZE Carbon Removal, explains that the prize aims to foster new solutions that complement existing climate efforts. She emphasizes the critical need to aggressively reduce emissions, but notes that scientific evidence indicates the necessity of carbon removal as well. The development and refinement of these technologies and solutions are crucial now to ensure their readiness by 2050, when the world must operate at a gigaton scale. Shantanu Agarwal: Mati Carbon is pioneering a revolutionary technology to scale carbon removal to gigaton levels. It enhances climate resilience and empowers up to 100 million smallholder farmers in developing economies through a natural process called enhanced rock weathering. What is enhanced rock weathering, and how does it contribute to the broader climate fight? Jake Jordan: Rock weathering is a natural process where rocks break down due to rain and water exposure. We accelerate this by pulverizing volcanic rock and applying it to the fields of our partner smallholder farmers. When this pulverized rock interacts with water and gases, it starts to decompose. With rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere, the rock primarily interacts with CO2 when wet. This interaction reorganizes the CO2 chemically into bicarbonate, a dissolved form of carbon that remains in the water and eventually drains into rivers, aquifers, or oceans, where it can be stored for thousands of years. This makes it a durable method of carbon dioxide removal. As an added benefit, the breakdown of rocks releases beneficial minerals and nutrients into the farmers' fields. This not only provides a climate solution by removing carbon dioxide but also supports vulnerable farmers who are disproportionately affected by climate change yet contribute the least to it. We view this as a significant double benefit. A key part of the XPrize competition was demonstrating the potential to scale the work to remove gigatons of carbon annually. How will Mati Carbon achieve this? Agarwal: For Mati Carbon, this involves establishing thousands of "bases," each serving 5,000 to 10,000 farmers. We aim to replicate these bases globally, reaching millions of farmers. Our XPRIZE demonstration included three fully operational commercial bases in India. XPRIZE representatives assessed one of these bases to understand our operating procedures, farmer support methods, and the resulting impact on farmers. We validated and demonstrated our standard scaling unit, its operation, cost, and replicability worldwide. How can carbon capture benefit smallholder farmers? Agarwal: The result is increased productivity for the farmer. We're observing approximately a 20-25% increase in productivity in well-fertilized soils and a 50-70% increase in degraded soils. This has a significant impact on their incomes through increased productivity, along with the ability to reduce pesticide use. This is transformative for farmers living crop to crop. A 30% to 50% increase in income enables them to pay off debts and invest in irrigation equipment or better seeds, which changes their lives. What are Mati Carbon's next steps? Agarwal: Our company is founded on a farmer-first principle. We structured our company as a nonprofit and chose not to accept equity from venture capital funds. We rely on grants and philanthropy to scale, which has limited our expansion. This XPRIZE provides us with the resources to pursue our full mission of reaching 100 million farmers in the next 15 to 20 years. What do you want people to learn from your work? Agarwal: I hope that this prize and our work offer hope and direction. Pathways exist that benefit the planet and small farmers while being economically viable through market-driven mechanisms. This disconnect is particularly damaging given Trump's focus on the stock market, which is reflecting investor unease. Fujitsu expands strategic collaboration with Supermicro to offer total generative AI platform

As a result, the two companies, alongside the wider Fujitsu Group, today announced the launch of the PRIMERGY GX2570 M8s, a Supermicro OEM server product featuring a high-performance GPU, SupportDesk, a high-quality maintenance and operational support service for Supermicro products offering the world's first maintenance provision for the company's liquid-cooled and GPU servers, and Infrastructure Manager, an integrated management tool designed to simplify server administration. Starting in July 2025, Fujitsu will combine these OEM products, maintenance services, and integrated management tools with its Takane large language model (LLM) for enterprises, to offer a managed services for building generative AI infrastructure, allowing customers to leverage generative AI without the need to own the assets.The use of generative AI in handling confidential or personal information introduces risks such as unintended learning, data breaches, and compliance with internal data storage policies. As a result, a dedicated environment is often required, which requires significant computing power and various expertise. Therefore, there is a demand for servers equipped with high-performance GPUs, and for support for maintenance and operation, as well as management tools that easily support the stable operation of servers.The PRIMERGY GX2570 M8s is a server designed for large-scale generative AI applications and will be offered in two cooling configurations: a 10U air-cooled model and a 4U liquid-cooled model, both featuring the advanced NVIDIA HGX B200 GPU.The SupportDesk maintenance and operation support service will offer high-quality support for Supermicro servers provided by Fujitsu Group, including on-site response to addresses in Japan within approximately 2 hours achieved through a network of 4,000 experienced engineers at 700 engineer locations nationwide.The Infrastructure Manager integrated management tool simplifies the management of the server lifecycle, including deployment, monitoring, and updates, a key priority for enterprise companies.
