America’s Dream Deferred: The Broken Promise of Opportunity

President Trump's second inaugural address perpetuated a national myth that has hindered America's progress. He proclaimed the U.S. "history's greatest civilization," despite its significant inequality, even among Western democracies. Furthermore, despite a narrow election victory, he asserted national unity behind his agenda. However, a notable consensus exists: widespread pessimism regarding the American Dream. A WSJ/NORC poll revealed that only 36% believe hard work guarantees success and upward mobility, a sharp decline from 2012's 52%. This despair isn't solely due to trade deals, corporate power, or government failures. It stems from a deeper issue: the erosion of the national narrative surrounding opportunity, ingrained in culture, policy, and civic life. Historically, the American Dream, for some, represented social mobility through hard work. From the Pilgrims to today's gig economy, the narrative intertwined hard work with destiny and success with moral worth. This narrative, however, fosters shame around struggle. America's complex public assistance programs exemplify this. A 2020 GAO audit showed that thousands die annually waiting for disability benefits, highlighting the system's deliberate obstacles. Dr. Heather Hahn notes that these burdens test deservingness, assuming only the truly needy will persevere. Meanwhile, those struggling financially are often depicted as lacking ambition. Former Representative Matt Gaetz, for example, opposed anti-poverty programs, arguing that hardworking Americans shouldn't support those he deemed unproductive. Similarly, individuals burdened by student debt are frequently portrayed negatively, rather than acknowledging the diverse circumstances leading to such debt. Senator Ted Cruz’s characterizations exemplify this bias. Conversely, successful individuals are celebrated as virtuous. Hillary Clinton highlighted this disparity in 2016, noting that she won regions representing two-thirds of America's GDP, suggesting a disconnect between economic success and the prevailing narrative. While the opportunity narrative remains largely unchanged, the American experience has shifted. Over 45 years, the U.S. economy doubled, but worker productivity increased significantly while wages grew only 29% (according to the Economic Policy Institute), with real wages declining for many. Medical debt is rampant, and baby formula is a common shoplifted item. A Brookings Institution study indicates that a substantial portion of jobs are low-wage. Nakitta Long, a single mother with a Master's degree, exemplifies this struggle, highlighting the difficulty of finding sufficient employment. Hillary and her advisors were strategizing on the plane. Backstage, the atmosphere was tense, except for Cecile. Maintaining her composure, she interacted with volunteers, exhibiting unwavering optimism and using the situation to rally support for healthcare access and individual liberties. Cecile's rally speech, filled with impromptu humor, received a standing ovation. Afterwards, at a local bar, she spearheaded the response to the email controversy. She was a beloved leader and an effective strategist, inspiring action on causes she championed. Cecile, who passed away Monday at 67 after battling brain cancer, was deeply loved. My initial awareness of Cecile Richards stemmed from her mother. In my first election, I voted for Ann Richards for Texas governor. Decades later, I met Cecile, then Planned Parenthood president, after becoming president of NARAL Pro-Choice America (now Reproductive Freedom for All). Cecile welcomed me, mentoring me and introducing me to a network of women dedicated to abortion rights. Cecile's background included union organizing, working in Nancy Pelosi's office, and leading America Votes. Many would have advised against her taking the Planned Parenthood position, considering it a step down for a woman of her caliber. Cecile remained steadfast. She led with passion and conviction. Her warnings about the future of abortion care, initially dismissed, proved prescient as attacks on reproductive healthcare intensified during Obama's second term. She skillfully transformed challenges into opportunities. When the Susan G. Komen foundation withdrew funding, Cecile's fundraising efforts boosted Planned Parenthood's profile and resources. While I cared for my newborn twins, Cecile, a mother of twins herself, testified before Congress, defending Planned Parenthood against politically motivated accusations and manipulated videos. Her twelve-hour testimony made her a hero, demonstrating unwavering dedication to patient care. Cecile was complex. We collaborated but also disagreed. She was a skilled strategist, but always guided by her principles. Following the Dobbs decision, many felt discouraged, but Cecile remained committed, providing medical information and urging continued support and action. Even as her health declined, she relentlessly advocated for increased funding and political engagement. She understood the stakes and fought until the end.   Cecile Richards leaves behind a legacy of courageous service and serves as an inspiration for future generations.

Israel’s Chief of Staff Resigns Following October 7th Security Failures “`

JERUSALEM — On Tuesday, Israel's top military commander resigned, citing intelligence and security failures preceding Hamas's surprise attack that ignited the Gaza war. Simultaneously, Israel launched a major military operation in Jenin, West Bank. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, this operation resulted in at least six deaths and 35 injuries. Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, the highest-ranking Israeli official to resign in response to the October 7th security breaches, acknowledged the military's failure to adequately defend Israel. The October 7th attack, involving a land, sea, and air assault by Hamas, resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals, mostly civilians, and the capture of over 90 people, with an estimated one-third of the captives now deceased. In his resignation letter, effective March 6th, Halevi stated that the military, under his leadership, had failed in its duty to protect Israel. His term, originally scheduled for three years, began in January 2023. Israel previously announced a large-scale military operation against Palestinian militants in Jenin, a city that has experienced repeated Israeli incursions and clashes with militants in recent years, even before the October 7th attack. This latest operation occurred shortly after the commencement of a six-week ceasefire with Hamas in Gaza, which includes the phased release of 33 militant prisoners in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians held by Israel. The first release of prisoners happened on Sunday. Israel gained control of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East war. Palestinians aspire to establish an independent state encompassing these territories. The ceasefire does not extend to the West Bank, which has witnessed escalating violence since the war's onset. Israeli forces have conducted numerous operations there. Attacks on Palestinians by Jewish extremists have also increased, including a violent incident in two Palestinian villages on Monday night, coupled with retaliatory Palestinian attacks on Israelis. Hamas denounced the Israeli operation in Jenin, urging Palestinians in the occupied West Bank to intensify attacks. Islamic Jihad, a smaller and more radical militant group, also condemned the operation, viewing it as a sign of Israel's failure in Gaza and a desperate attempt by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to shore up his coalition. Netanyahu has faced criticism from his far-right allies concerning the ceasefire, which involves Israeli troop withdrawals from populated Gaza areas and the release of numerous Palestinian prisoners, including those convicted of deadly attacks on Israelis. The ceasefire has already shown Hamas retaining firm control of Gaza, despite fifteen months of war that resulted in tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths and… One of Netanyahu's former coalition partners, Itamar Ben-Gvir, left the coalition on the day the ceasefire began, weakening but not destroying Netanyahu's parliamentary majority. Another right-wing leader, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, has threatened to leave the coalition if Israel doesn't resume the war after the ceasefire's first six weeks. Israel's military campaign has caused the deaths of over 47,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to local health authorities. They report that women and children constitute over half the casualties, but don't specify the number of combatants among the dead. ```
