Buyers and exhibitors were also proactively encouraged to use the EXHIBITION+ hybrid model for business exchange.The physical exhibitions attracted some 17,000 buyers from 106 countries and regions. Global buyers from outside Hong Kong mainly came from Mainland China, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, highlighting Hong Kong’s importance as a watch trading centre. Japan, Taiwan, Australia & Pacific Islands, and South Korea were seen as offering the best growth prospects over next two years among traditional markets, while ASEAN, the Middle East and India were seen as offering the most promising growth prospects over the next two years among emerging markets.In terms of product trends, 40% of respondents expected smartwatches to continue as the most popular watch category. Other respondents pointed to quartz analogue watches, cited as the most popular watch category by 17%, mechanical watches, cited by 15%, and digital watches, cited by 14%. Michel Barnier’s Appointment as French Prime Minister Sparks Protests

PARIS — Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across France on Saturday, responding to a call from a far-left party leader who condemned the president’s appointment of a conservative new prime minister, Michel Barnier, as a “power grab.” The protests directly challenged President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to appoint a prime minister from outside the far-left bloc after a deeply divisive legislative election result in July. Authorities did not report a large turnout nationwide. The left, particularly the France Unbowed party, views Barnier’s conservative background as a rejection of the electorate’s will, further exacerbating the already tense political climate in the EU’s second largest economy. Saturday’s demonstrators condemned Barnier’s appointment as a denial of democracy, echoing the fiery rhetoric of France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Melenchon in recent days. Sigrid Nunez Watches Julianne Moore, Tilda Swinton, and Naomi Watts Bring Her Novel Characters to Life

In her 2020 novel What Are You Going Through, about a woman caring for her dying friend, Sigrid Nunez references Belgian director Chantal Akerman's 2015 documentary No Home Movie. Nunez writes, “Akerman documented conversations with her mother during the last months of her mother’s life. We should all be great filmmakers.” This line feels particularly poignant now that two of Nunez's novels are being adapted for the screen. What Are You Going Through serves as the basis for The Room Next Door, directed by Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar. Simultaneously, her 2018 National Book Award-winning work The Friend is now a movie starring Julianne Moore and Naomi Watts, directed by the duo Scott McGehee and David Siegel. Both films are playing at the Toronto International Film Festival after debuting at Venice and Telluride respectively, making Nunez perhaps the hottest writer of the fall movie season, three decades into her career which has produced 10 books, and accolades including a Guggenheim Fellowship. “I just feel like the luckiest writer in the world right now,” she says in a phone interview just shortly after she had seen The Room Next Door for the first time, the day before TIFF began. “Those books were obviously very meaningful to me and I have these two beautiful interpretations, creations, works of art that I didn’t have to do anything [on]. My vision gave some other really gifted people a vision. I’m just thrilled.”  Nunez’s two stories are thematically similar. The Friend follows a writer, named Iris and played on screen by Watts, grieving the loss of her friend (played by Steve Coogan), a mentor figure who died by suicide. In his absence his third wife (Noma Dumezweni) asks his dear confidant to take care of the dog he left behind, an enormous Harlequin Great Dane named Apollo, who is also in mourning and who is not allowed in her cramped New York apartment. Both the film and the novel tackle how people cope in the face of great loss, and how we interpret and anthropomorphize animals who also seem to project human-like emotions. Apollo is played by a Dane named Bing, in a truly remarkable feat of animal acting. (“He is Apollo,” Nunez says.) Almodóvar arguably took some more liberties in transforming What Are You Going Through into The Room Next Door, including adding a surprising conclusion, but the contours of the narrative mirror those of the book. On screen, Tilda Swinton is Ingrid, a writer who begins visiting her friend Martha, portrayed by Julianne Moore, who is dying of cancer. Martha’s daughter is absent from her life, and that strain weighs on her. Eventually, Martha comes to Ingrid with a request: She is planning on ending her own life with a euthanasia pill procured on the Dark Web and she wants Ingrid to accompany her to a rented home upstate where she will do it when the time feels right. She would like to have someone there when she dies, she explains. Nunez’s books are internal, written in first person and often grappling with the very act of writing. The characters all go unnamed in her prose, which is highly referential to other works of literature, almost acting as criticism in addition to fiction. All of those stylistic flourishes, naturally, are more challenging to convey visually. Nunez explains that she always thought The Friend has a “straightforward” tale at its heart of this woman and dog that would make for a seamless transition to film. As for the Almodóvar picture, she knew that What Are You Going Through was in his wheelhouse given that his most recent films, including 2019’s semi-autobiographical Pain and Glory, had been “death haunted.” She also credits her Spanish translator, Mercedes Cebrian, for getting her work to him.  While Nunez says that What Are You Going Through very much emerged from The Friend, and they act as companion texts, she doesn’t see the films as connected in the same way. “They are their own solid works,” she says. And, indeed, each film feels very much the product of a different vision. For instance, The Room Next Door is an Almodóvar film in every sense, from its color scheme to its pacing.  Nunez decided she didn’t want to be actively involved in the creation of either film, and isn’t credited on the screenplays. She knows some writers who have demanded inclusion and were still disappointed with the results. “I think that my instinct was just so right,” she says. “And my luck in getting these particular directors and actors.”  But all three directors didn’t completely exclude her. After they first cast Bing as Apollo, McGehee and Siegel sent her a video of the pooch interacting with a donkey at trainer Bill Berloni’s Connecticut property. Almodóvar asked her a couple of simple questions throughout the making of the film including, “What would you bring to read if you were in Martha’s situation?” Perhaps the most revelatory part of the process for Nunez was seeing the actors embody the people she wrote. Nunez says she never visualizes her characters when she’s composing them and has no idea what they look like. “From now on I will always see Naomi Watts,” she says. “The way she managed to play that role with this combination of super vulnerability and dignity, that I just found thrilling.”  In The Room Next Door she found that Moore and Swinton also embodied what she was writing about. “I never pictured those women but the way they relate: That is exactly what I was feeling,” she says. “There’s a place in the book, which is really based on something someone said to me once, that watching someone die is like falling in love. Cheney Endorses Kamala Harris, Citing Trump as a Threat to Democracy

Former Vice President and influential Republican Dick Cheney has announced his endorsement of Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Speaking out against the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, Cheney said that he can “never be trusted with power again.” “In our nation’s 248 year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Cheney, 83, said in the statement shared on Sept. 6. “He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him,” he continued, referencing the events of Jan. 6, 2021. Cheney, who served as Vice President under President George W. Bush between 2001 and 2009 went on to say that American citizens have a “duty” to prioritize the nation over partisan politics. The statement came Friday, hours after one of Cheney’s daughters, former Wyoming Republican Representative Liz Cheney revealed on a panel at the Texas Tribune’s annual festival that her father will be voting for Harris.  “If you think about the moment we’re in, and you think about how serious this moment is, my dad believes—and he said publicly—there has never been an individual in our country who is as grave a threat to our democracy as Donald Trump is,” she had said on the panel moderated by journalist Mark Leibovich. Boeing’s Starliner Capsule Returns to Earth Empty, Leaving Two Astronauts Behind in Space

Boeing's inaugural astronaut mission concluded on Friday night with an empty capsule landing. Two test pilots, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, remain in space. NASA deemed their return too risky and scheduled them for a SpaceX flight instead. The Starliner capsule, after a six-hour descent from the International Space Station, landed on autopilot in New Mexico's White Sands Missile Range. The mission, initially delayed by thruster failures and helium leaks, became a drawn-out saga as engineers worked to understand the capsule's issues. Boeing insisted that Starliner was safe to bring Wilmore and Williams home, but NASA disagreed. The astronauts are now scheduled to return on a SpaceX flight at the end of September, meaning they will stay in space until February, over eight months after their initial launch. Their return on Starliner, initially planned for mid-June, was canceled due to the thruster problems and helium loss, which NASA deemed too risky for a return trip. The empty capsule, equipped with fresh software updates, left the space station carrying old station equipment. However, four additional leaks emerged after liftoff, followed by five thruster failures. Although four thrusters were restored, the malfunctions raised concerns about the capsule's descent from orbit. Boeing conducted extensive thruster tests in space and on Earth, concluding that the spacecraft could safely return the astronauts. However, NASA remained hesitant about the thruster situation and opted for SpaceX. Following undocking, flight controllers conducted further test firings of the capsule's thrusters, one of which failed to ignite. Engineers suspect that repeated firing causes the thrusters to overheat, causing protective seals to swell and impede propellant flow. The section containing the thrusters was discarded before reentry, preventing examination of the parts. Starliner will be transported to NASA's Kennedy Space Center within a few weeks for further analysis. NASA officials emphasized their commitment to having two competing U.S. companies transport astronauts. SpaceX and Boeing are expected to alternate launches, once a year each, until the space station is decommissioned in 2030. The limited timeframe for Boeing to catch up with SpaceX is acknowledged, but NASA confirmed their intention to support Starliner's progress. From Ballet-Dancing Farm Kids to Ben Stiller’s Co-Stars: The Real-Life Siblings Behind ‘Nutcrackers’

When director David Green set out to make Nutcrackers, the family comedy starring Ben Stiller that opened the Toronto International Film Festival Thursday, he didn’t have to search to find his four key child actors. Central to the story, the kids play the unruly brothers who torment their Uncle Michael, Stiller’s real estate developer character, who is charged with figuring out their care after the death of their parents. Instead, the film was entirely based around Green’s relationship with the four real-life siblings: Atlas, Arlo, Ulysses, and Homer Janson—ages 8 through 13 (Arlo and Atlas are twins). Their mother Karey Williams was a film school classmate of Green’s. “After making a few movies as a collaborator of hers, she went back to the farm, fifth-generation farm in Ohio, and had four beautiful sons,” Green says in a phone interview the morning after the premiere. “As we kept up and they grew up I was always blown away by their charisma and charm, and every time I’d go over there and hang out I just felt there’s a movie here if we just bring a camera next time.”  Nutcrackers, which is seeking distribution out of the festival, marks Stiller’s first lead acting role in seven years—he’s been away directing television like the highly acclaimed Apple TV+ series Severance. However, it’s the Jansons who pilot the story and who inspired Green, who had recently been making studio horror like the Halloween franchise and directing shows like The Man in the High Castle, to return to his roots in indie filmmaking. While the film hits familiar beats, it’s also the kind of throwback live-action family movie that feels like it’s from another era. The boys play the Kicklighters, who have recently lost their mother and father. Their uncle arrives on their farm with the idea that he’ll just have to sign some papers before they are shipped off to a foster home. But Michael is quickly told that finding people to take them in will be harder than he expected—it’s nearing Christmas, after all. So now he’s the unwitting caretaker of these menaces, who loom over him wearing bunny masks, throw baseballs at his head, and keep their pigs and chickens in the house. The eldest, Justice, played by Homer, also really wants to jump his uncle’s yellow Porsche over a makeshift ramp. Ultimately, as one might expect from a heartwarming comedy of this ilk, Michael develops a sweet relationship with the boys who are also unexpectedly talented. Their on-screen mother was a ballet teacher and they are all wonderful dancers. The movie culminates in their version of The Nutcracker, this one with a samurai and a knock-off John Rambo.  When Williams told her sons that their family friend Green wanted to make a movie with them, they were “super excited,” Homer says.  “We thought that it was a joke or something, but it was real,” he added. “All of us immediately got into work mode and were like, ‘We got to impress David.’” They tried to at first be professional around Green and writer Leland Douglas when the pair visited the farm to construct the script, but that facade slipped when they wanted to be their rowdy selves and swim in the pond.  The movie was really shot at the Janson family farm, and all the animals—except for the snake the kids put in the toilet to scare Michael—actually belong to them. (Sadly, the film ends with a tribute to one of their dogs who has died, who appears on screen.)  Green wanted the scenes to feel as “unmanicured” as possible and sought the Jansons’ input. When it came time to do the Kicklighters’ version of the famous ballet, he asked middle child Ulysses to share what his version of the story would be. From that emerged their slightly tweaked name of the production, “The Nutcracker’s Mustache.” Their performance skills are not a fluke, though. All of the Jansons are trained ballet dancers. Homer says he’s been taking lessons for seven years, and some scenes were shot at their actual dance studio. The day before they flew into Toronto, they had private classes because they are preparing for a performance of the actual Nutcracker in a couple of months. (“Honestly, I prefer Uly’s,” Homer says.)  While Homer adds that “Ballet is definitely another serious career option for us,” they all say that they would potentially consider professional acting. Part of the fun of filming was throwing cheeseballs at Stiller, Homer says, but he also marvels at what it was like to have a crew at his house. “We saw the trucks rolling in and were like, ‘Wow, this is actually happening,” he says.
