The Secret Service is re-evaluating its methods for safeguarding current and former Presidents following two recent incidents where armed individuals came close to harming former President Donald Trump, the agency’s acting director said Monday.  “We need to shift from a reactive approach to a proactive one,” acting director Ronald L. Some critics have speculated that the Biden administration has intentionally reduced Trump’s Secret Service protection. Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado, the leading Democrat on the bipartisan task force investigating the attempted assassination of Trump in Butler, refutes this claim. “The current president and both candidates are receiving the same level of Secret Service security protection,” says Crow. But he adds that the agency is facing more demands than ever before, leading to overworked agents and a weakened “level of readiness” for the agency. “We’re placing a heavy burden on the Secret Service agents, and I have no doubt that we need to provide them with additional resources and staffing to fulfill their duties,” says Crow. Rowe said that the Secret Service has “operated with limited resources for decades” and that at this time, the agency’s agents are working excessive overtime shifts. “We are pushing them to their limits,” Rowe said. While Trump was on the fifth hole of his golf course Sunday afternoon, Trump’s security detail noticed a man in the trees along the fence line near the sixth green and opened fire on him, Rowe said. Officers found a cell phone and a loaded SKS-style rifle with a scope at the scene and ultimately apprehended Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, who was charged with gun crimes in federal court on Monday. Cell phone records indicate Routh was in the area for almost 12 hours, according to investigators. Rowe said Monday that the Secret Service was unable to inspect the course beforehand because the golfing visit wasn’t on Trump’s official schedule, meaning that Trump had not given the Secret Service much advance notice before going to the course. “The President wasn’t supposed to be there,” Rowe said. The Secret Service implemented their “emergency plan based on our tactical assets” and “that security plan worked,” he said. To address the new level of threats, Rowe said he has “ordered a paradigm shift.” The methods used to protect current and former Presidents and presidential candidates were effective on Sunday, but failed to prevent a would-be assassin from firing off a barrage of bullets in Butler that killed one rally attendee and came close to taking Trump’s life. The Secret Service is facing a “dynamic threat environment,” Rowe said. That necessitates a larger pool of trained agents who are ready to be deployed before the unforeseen happens. President Biden told reporters at the White House on Monday that he supports increased funding and agents for the Secret Service. “The Service needs more help. I think the Congress should respond to their needs, if they, in fact, need more Service people,” Biden said. The number of federal agents required by the Secret Service rises during campaign seasons, as it must safeguard candidates for President and Vice President, as well as protect large complex events like the party conventions. At the same time, the Service has to guard a significant number of former Presidents: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Trump. When the agency needs to, it draws on federal law enforcement officers from other federal agencies like Homeland Security Investigations, the Transportation Security Administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and the U.S. Marshals Service. “We’re in an era right now where there are a lot of demands” on the Secret Service, says John Sandweg, a former acting general counsel of the Department of Homeland Security, the agency that oversees the Secret Service. On top of that, Trump is a “lightning rod,” notes Sandweg. “Trump being Trump clearly requires a much greater share of resources than other former presidents,” he says. Sandweg says Congress should explore whatever creative funding ideas it needs to so that the agency can “build a surge capacity” from within a cadre of special agents that are trained for this work.

MELBOURNE, Australia — Clashes between illegal miners in Papua New Guinea have resulted in the deaths of between 20 and 50 people, a United Nations official reported on Monday. The fighting erupted several days ago and is ongoing in the Porgera Valley, located near the site of a gold mine. This mine has been linked to a significant number of deaths, estimated by the government of Papua New Guinea to exceed 2,000. Mate Bagossy, the U.N.’s humanitarian adviser for Papua New Guinea, stated that the death toll, at least 20 as of Sunday, is based on information gathered from community members and local authorities in Enga province, situated in the nation’s mountainous interior. “We have confirmed that at least 20 people have been killed, but as per the last news that I have, it’s likely up to 50 people,” Bagossy told The Associated Press. “The fighting is continuing.” “Today some security forces have started moving in … so it remains to be seen what effect this will have,” Bagossy said, referring to the army and police. Bagossy did not possess information regarding the number of individuals wounded. Papua New Guinea police did not respond to a request on Monday for tallies of dead and wounded in the valley. David Manning, the National Police Commissioner, declared an emergency on Saturday after the violence intensified. Police have been mobilized to safeguard residents and infrastructure. “The deteriorating situation has been caused by illegal miners and illegal settlers who are victimizing traditional landowners and using violence to terrorize local communities,” Manning stated in a release. The nearby New Porgera gold mine has temporarily ceased most of its operations due to the violence, suspending operations until at least Thursday. “Over the past 24 hours a significant escalation in tribal fighting has impacted many of our local employees. Homes have been destroyed, family and friends injured or killed, and people have been unable to sleep while living in fear,” James McTiernan, New Porgera’s General Manager, said in a statement issued on Sunday. “I am incredibly saddened by these devastating events and sincerely hope that the government will soon restore peace to the valley,” McTiernan added. Peter Ipatas, the Governor of Enga, described the violence in the valley as unprecedented. “This situation is dire. We have witnessed innocent lives being claimed and properties destroyed within days. The current situation can’t continue,” Ipatas said in a statement. A disaster management team, comprising representatives from the national government and the U.N. Development Program, will convene in the national capital, Port Moresby, on Tuesday to coordinate a humanitarian response in a dangerous and remote region. Tito Jackson, one of the brothers who formed the beloved pop group the Jackson 5, has passed away at the age of 70. Tito was the third of nine Jackson children, including global superstars and sister , part of a musical family whose songs remain popular today. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson. The Jackson 5 included brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael. The family group, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, produced several No. 1 hits in the 1970s including “ABC,” “I Want You Back,” and “I’ll Be There.” The Jackson 5 became one of the biggest names in music under the guidance of their father, Joe Jackson, a steelworker and guitar player who supported his wife and nine children in Gary, Indiana. As the family’s music careers flourished, they moved to California. Born on October 15, 1953, Toriano Adaryll “Tito” Jackson was the least-heard member of the group, a background singer who played guitar. Eugene and Dan Levy opened the Emmys with a disclaimer. The father-son Schitt’s Creek duo were not, they explained, stand-ups like most awards-show hosts. “I wouldn’t actually even call us hosts. We’re more like actors acting like hosts,” said Dan. “If things go south,” Eugene joked, “my name is pronounced ‘Martin Short.’” It was a bit of polite self-effacement from the extremely Canadian Levys. In reality, though, there was no need for it. The emcees imbued what is always a long night—and was, this time around, full of predictable wins—with many moments of lighthearted fun, without trying too hard to roast their fellow actors or land headline-making zingers. To state what should be obvious to TV producers but rarely seems to inform their choice of hosts for the Emmys or any other awards telecast: Charm and chemistry go a long way. Happily, with awards-show ratings in free fall, ABC tried something new recruiting faces TV fans were actually excited to see. The past decade’s worth of Emmys hosts have been pretty bland, ranging from the same late-night personalities we see every week—Jimmy Kimmel (twice), Stephen Colbert, SNL’s Michael Che and Colin Jost—to past-their-prime comedians like Cedric the Entertainer and Kenan Thompson. (The last time a woman hosted? Jane Lynch in 2011.) It was only eight months ago that black-ish star Anthony Anderson hosted a ceremony, and I’m probably not alone in recalling precisely nothing about that performance. The Levys were an inspired choice, in part because they excel at what they have evocatively described as “being hosts” (while they didn’t technically host the 2020 SAG Awards, they did present, wonderfully) and in part because there is still so much goodwill for the sleeper-hit Canadian sitcom they created and starred in together. They also seemed to have the right perspective going into what is, more often than not, a thankless gig. “The challenge,” Dan noted in the pair’s recent interview, “is not humiliating yourself on television in front of millions and millions of people.” (Doesn’t he know it.) Their introduction set the tone for an unusually laid-back, gently upbeat evening, with most punchlines aimed at nominated shows—and each other—rather than nominees’ personal lives or the phantom of “wokeness” or the low-hanging fruit that is American politics. (Side note: What do we even call an opening speech given by a duo? Monologue sounds wrong, but so does dialogue.) Like Schitt’s Creek, the Levys’ back-and-forth was just spicy enough to cut the sweetness. “My most rewarding dad role,” Eugene told Dan, “has been being your dad [pause] in Schitt’s Creek.” By which he meant, he won an Emmy for it. When cheers broke out, Dan gamely played the wounded boy: “Why are we applauding bad parenting?” Though you wouldn’t know it to watch the standard awards show, funny jokes don’t have to be mean jokes. Eugene got in some smartly written meta-humor by referencing the endless debate over whether The Bear was actually a comedy (a category it would all but sweep, notably losing best comedy series to Abbott Elementary), then saying: “In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes.” Dan struck the right tone with his layered one-liner on the Emmys finally nominating the excellent Native American dramedy Reservation Dogs, for its final season: “The Academy found a show that has been creatively thriving for years and said, ‘Look what we discovered!’” The bicker-banter carried the rest of the night, as the Levys settled into the roles of neurotic, out-of-touch dad and cheeky, easily exasperated son. Dan dispensed “fun facts” about iconic roles his father had lost to other actors and Eugene finally struck back with: “And how was your audition for The Godfather?” Introducing a segment on memorable TV dads, Dan sang the praises of Walter White—a murderer, as Eugene noted. Dan: “Well, his heart was in the right place.” Eugene spoke for all of us at home, forced for too many years to endure bad awards-show crowd work, when he complained that going out into the audience was “uncomfortable.” Speaking of discomfort, Dan almost managed to defuse the telecast’s celebration of a perennially loaded sort of character: “And now, a TV archetype everyone in this room agrees on: Cops!” The evening ended—less than 10 minutes late, which counts as early for this cursed genre of live television—the only way it could, with a reunion of the Levys’ Schitt’s Creek family. First came Annie Murphy, taking a page from her delightfully delusional character, Alexis Rose, and ready to be fêted as “the shining star of Schitt’s Creek”—only to learn that the description was really meant for Rose matriarch Catherine O’Hara. Eugene’s TV spouse materialized to present the nominees of the night’s final category, best comedy series. With America at the edge of its collective seat, or just anxious to get to bed on a Sunday night, she delivered a valedictory pivot worthy of the melodramatic Moira: “And the Emmy goes to… No, must we? Must we really choose just one winner? When all the nominees have done such wonderful, hilarious work?”  Truth be told, I wish we’d seen a bit more of the reunited Roses. But it’s not every year that the Emmys leave us wanting more. To the remarkable extent that they did so in their second 2024 ceremony, the Levys deserve a lot of credit—and perhaps an invitation to do it again in 2025.

Just two months after an alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July during a rally in Pennsylvania, another apparent attempt on the Republican presidential nominee’s life was thwarted by authorities on Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump was unharmed, and a suspect who fled the scene was arrested. Politicians across the spectrum have condemned the attack, and law enforcement officials are investigating. Here’s what to know: Hiding in the bushes: what happened While Trump was golfing on Sunday around 1.30 p.m., a Secret Service agent, positioned one hole ahead of the former President, noticed a rifle muzzle an estimated 300-500 yards away, peeking out of bushes lining the golf course, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw in a press briefing later on Sunday. (For reference, the was appx. 400 feet—about a third of the distance—away from Trump.) As Secret Service personnel opened fire at the gunman hiding in the bushes, Bradshaw recounted, the gunman dropped his weapon and other items—an “AK-47-style rifle with a scope, two backpacks which were hung on the fence that had ceramic tile in them, and a GoPro [camera]”—and fled in a vehicle. It’s unclear if the suspect had managed to take any shots at Secret Service agents during the engagement, a Secret Service representative said during the press briefing on Sunday.  A witness reported seeing the suspect flee from the bushes and photographed the vehicle he jumped into. Authorities were able to pull that vehicle over on a highway, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said in a around 3.30 p.m. “We did not give him an opportunity to put up a fight, we had him contained, forced off the road, taken out at gunpoint,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder of the arrest during the later press briefing, that the suspect was unarmed, “relatively calm,” and “not displaying a lot of emotions” when he was stopped.  The witness was brought in to confirm the suspect was the same person seen fleeing earlier.
