THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to hold twin plebiscites in two barangays in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur on March 18, 2023, which may result in the creation of two more barangays.

In its Resolution No. 10883, the Comelec en banc set the plebiscites in Barangays Boganga and Sagonsongan for the proposed creation of Barangays Boganga II and Datu Dalidigan, respectively.

“The Commission resolves to adopt the following Calendar of Activities and Periods of Prohibited Acts in connection with the conduct of the March 18, 2023 plebiscites,” said the Comelec.

The first plebiscite is in accordance with City Ordinance No. 07-010 Series of 2022, which seeks to create Barangay Boganga II from the mother barangay of Baganga.

The second plebiscite is also based on City Ordinance No. 05-010 Series of 2022, which aims to establish Barangay Datu Dalidigan out of the mother barangay of Sagonsongan.

With the Plebiscite Day set, the poll body also said that the information and campaign period is set from February 25 to March 16, 2023.

During the said period, it shall be prohibited to remove, destroy, deface and tamper lawful plebiscite propaganda materials.

The commission also set the plebiscite period in Barangay Muzon from February 15 to March 21, 2023.

Within the plebiscite period, it is considered prohibited to carry firearms and other deadly weapons; maintenance of reaction forces; transfer of officers and employees in the civil service; suspension of local elective officials; and illegal release of prisoners.

Come March 18, or the Plebiscite Day, it is already prohibited to campaign as well as to sell, buy or serve intoxicating liquor.

Casting of votes on March 18 is set to run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will immediately be followed by the counting of votes.

The canvassing of votes by the Municipal Plebiscite Board of Canvassers is expected around 5 p.m., to be followed by the proclamation of the plebiscite results. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
