ALMOST nine in every 10 private establishments in Central Visayas were found to be compliant with the general labor standards (GLS), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said.

In a statement, DOLE-Central Visayas said around 7,957 or 87.81 percent of the 9,062 establishments are found to be compliant with the GLS in 2022.

“We are so happy with the results as this just shows that majority of the establishments we’ve inspected last year in the region adhere to the labor laws,” said DOLE-Central Visayas Director Lilia Estillore.

GLS covers the minimum requirements for hours of work, wages, monetary benefits, welfare benefits, overtime pay, holiday pay and service incentive leaves.

On the other hand, the labor official said a slightly lower compliance rate was registered in terms of occupational safety and health standards (OSHS).

This is after only 7,222 establishments or 79.70 percent have shown compliance with the OSHS.

“We recognize the fact that more work has to be done so that no worker is left behind,” said Estillore.

The OSHS includes the presence of safety officers trained in basic occupational safety and health, having certified first aiders, and the formulation and implementation of OSH programs.

Broken down to provinces and cities, there were a total of 2,512 firms inspected in Cebu; 866 in Bohol; 1,746 in Negros Oriental; 126 in Siquijor; and 3,812 in the Cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-lapu.

On February 1, the DOLE ordered the resumption of all labor inspection activities in the country for the year 2023. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
