
Photographs showed widespread destruction after a truck blast on Thursday that allegedly resulted in four fatalities and impacted a minimum of 50 cars.
The explosion in Santiago, Chile’s capital, occurred when a tanker carrying liquefied gas tipped over and detonated, according to officials.
Seventeen additional individuals were wounded in the event, and investigators are looking into the cause of the crash, Reuters noted.
Images captured at the scene showed firefighters working to . One photograph revealed rows of cars in a nearby parking lot that had been charred by the explosion.
Emergency services reported that the explosion impacted no fewer than 50 cars and its impact was detected as far as 650 feet away, per Reuters.
“State personnel have been mobilized and are collaborating with relevant agencies to safeguard residents from the smoke in the vicinity,” Chilean President Gabriel Boric posted on X.
“I extend my sympathy and condolences to the relatives and friends of those who tragically lost their lives, and wish the wounded a swift recovery,” he continued.
Among the wounded, five were in critical condition, Reuters stated, referencing Claudio Orrego, Santiago metropolitan region’s governor.
