North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been re-elected as the general secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, according to a statement from the country’s state-run media.
This decision was officially announced on Monday by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), which reported that the party officially approved the measure on February 22 during its Ninth Congress.
KCNA characterized the action as a reflection of the “unanimous desire” of party members, the military, and the general public. The agency lauded Kim as the “centre of unity and leadership,” attributing to him the strengthening of the nation’s nuclear deterrence and advancements in economic and military development.
The extensive report detailed the country’s accomplishments over the last five years, including enhancements to national defense capabilities and economic planning.
It also reiterated Kim’s position as the principal figure guiding the country’s “socialist construction.”
Kim, who has held power since 2011, has served as the general secretary of the Workers’ Party since 2021. He formally assumed this title, which was previously held by his late father, Kim Jong Il.
Analysis by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) suggests that North Korea might leverage the conclusion of the Ninth Party Congress to introduce new strategic weapons and showcase progress made under its 2021–2025 economic plan.
The report indicates that Pyongyang could display advancements in intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, and hypersonic missiles as it aims to improve the survivability and precision of its nuclear arsenal.
AEI anticipates that Kim will likely outline modernization objectives for the 2026–2030 period, potentially focusing on second-strike capabilities, accelerated launch readiness, and a wider array of delivery systems.
Beyond military matters, the analysis suggests Kim may present the current five-year economic plan as a success, citing increased agricultural output and initiatives under his “20×10 Regional Development Policy” designed to reduce disparities between rural and urban areas.
