The United States government has increased tariffs on India by 25%, bringing the total to 50%, following India’s purchase of oil from Russia.
Washington, D.C. – August 7, 2025 – President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25% tariff on India in response to its purchase of Russian oil. The new tariffs, effective from August 27th, will result in a 50% tariff on Indian imports to the US. This decision has surprised many, and the Indian foreign ministry responded on Wednesday, calling the tariff “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”
A statement indicated that “It is extremely unfortunate that the US would impose additional tariffs on India for actions that other countries are also undertaking in their own national interest. India will take all necessary actions to protect its national interests.” The United States opposes Russia in the Ukraine-Russia war, leading to the tariff increase due to India’s business dealings with Russia. The president reportedly stated that he does not “care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine.”
A statement released by the White House on Wednesday stated that the “Russian Federation’s actions in Ukraine pose an ongoing threat to US national security and foreign policy, necessitating stronger measures to address the national emergency.” The US government also asserted that India’s imports from Russia are disrupting US efforts to counter Russia in the war against Ukraine.
As Russia is a major oil and gas exporter, many countries are purchasing from them. The US government stated it will “recommend further actions to the President as needed” for countries doing business with Russia. This uncertainty has caused concern within the Indian ministry. However, Ajay Srivastava, former Indian trade official and head of GTRI, advised, “India should remain calm, avoid retaliation for at least six months, and recognise that meaningful trade negotiations with the US cannot proceed under threats or mistrust.”
