Orani police chief Larry Valencia said the bus, which was carrying 48 individuals, 46 of which were teachers, plunged 15 meters off the ravine along Vicinal Road in Barangay Tala around 11:40 a.m.
The teachers came from a gender and development seminar at a resort in the said town when the incident happened.
In a statement, the School Division Office (SDO) of Quezon City said the lone fatality was a teacher from Payatas B Elementary School. She was declared dead at the Orani District Hospital due to the injury she sustained from the accident.
It ensured the provision of assistance to the injured victims as well as the family of the fatality. The victims were already transported back to Quezon City.
“The LGU (local government unit) of Quezon City and the DepEd (Department of Education) SDO pledged to shoulder all medical expenses of the injured passengers including financial assistance to the deceased,” it said.
The SDO said the bus lost its brake while negotiating a sharp curve in the area.
The driver is currently at the Orani Police Station for questioning.
In a statement, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte expressed sadness over the incident and ensured the provision of assistance to the victims.
She confirmed that the bus involved in the incident was donated by the LGU to the DepEd SDO in 2016. (SunStar Philippines)
